I got distracted from the story.
rebekahrox23 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This had some good things about it. I really like Niall Matter and I've seen Shenae Grimes in a few things a while back and also liked her very much. She plays a lawyer in the big city, who comes home for Christmas and to help her mother downsize and and move into a new condo. She comes across her old music partner (Niall Matter) and we learn that she used to be a talented musician and singer like her late father. He gives her the cold shoulder and there is a lot of anger behind his eyes. They have a fight and the truth comes out. She won a scholarship to Yale University and abandoned their dreams to go to Nashville together and try to make a go at music. She didn't discuss it with him and just left with no warning. Basically ghosted him after a long relationship. But after she got to Yale, she wrote him and tried to call him numerous times and he just ignored her. The best he could do on his own was being part of a band. He couldn't attain any degree of the success he dreamed of without her, although he did make a little name for himself. He has been blaming her all this time for his lack of success and for choosing Yale over him and leaving with no discussion. He is back in town directing the towns big amateur Christmas concert. They air it all out and forgive each other and start to work together.

To be frank I was so busy trying to figure out how old the Niall Matter character was supposed to be, that I kind of lost interest in all the ins and outs of the story. Shenae's character is definitely 28 years old. She got her scholarship as a senior in highschool and it's been 10 years. The 10 year gap between 18 and present day is confirmed several times. Given the situation and what we learned about their relationship, it would make sense that Niall was about the same age. They were a music duo and were singing together since she was about 15. They were young and in love and making plans to leave town together to make a go of it in Nashville. It is mentioned later in the movie that they were in 6th grade together. But later when it becomes obvious that his career is not going well Shenae asks him what happened. He says he got tired of just playing national venues as just part of a band and wanted to strike out on his own. At this point Shenae confirms that this *was* when he was 29. He says he put everything and every dollar into it, but just failed. He is still a performer, but he is not a success. He is beaten down and discouraged. (He even churlishly refused to join a singer during the tree lighting, when given a shout out, turning his back.) All this seems to imply that he has been struggling for a few years, at least. That puts him at about 31. It just didn't hang together chronologically or logically. My guess is that the part was written for them both to be 28 or so years old, but it was too much of a stretch when 42 year old Niall Matter was cast, no matter how attractive he looks. So they added some lines to age him up a bit. My head hurt trying to make it all make sense. I don't know, it just bothered me.**this last paragraph was edited after watching again because the time line really bothered me, and I did get it wrong, per Michael-by-sea. I see he rightly called me out on it. ***

They both behaved badly and they were whiny about it. For a 28 to 31 (or older) year old man, Niall was very immature and did not seem to have much gumption or a firm grasp of reality. Shenae blamed her mother for her very successful career in New York as a lawyer and made her feel guilty about guiding her to make the choice of the Yale scholarship rather than probably throwing her life away on a big gamble in music. They both just acted like babies. The mom actually apologized for guiding her teen age daughter to the wise choice. So that was just so wrong as well.

The performers at this all important concert were not good. The whole thing was like highschool amateur night. For all of the build up, Niall, Shenae and her mother were not great either. They all had very pleasant voices, but not professional quality by any means. I liked the Mom's new romance, but there was too much about her sad backstory.

The end didn't help. Shenae decides to try again with Niall, music, and maybe practice law on the side (?). Meanwhile Niall buys a plane ticket to New York to be near Shenae and her big career as a lawyer. The end is very vague as to what they end up doing and how.

Didn't stand out for us
VetteRanger26 November 2022
We've enjoyed Niall Matter since his days on Eureka, and he's been a solid presence in a number of Christmas films.

We found this film watchable, but it won't be on our repeat list. We have a couple the writers wanted us to believe both thought the other had left them. The reason they came up with seemed contrived and unbelievable, and they begin their reunion in their hometown each quite bitter at the other.

When Niall's character, who is putting together a Christmas show, runs out of piano players for rehearsals, she agrees to play the piano. Not just agrees, but volunteers with the slightest of suggestions from her mother. From there the supposed bitterness virtually melts away with very little effort. The relationship changes, in our opinion, lacked authenticity.

Our verdict is watchable, but we won't repeat the viewing.

Worth watching for fans of Shenae Grimes-Beech and Niall Matter
MichaelByTheSea23 November 2022
I saw Shenae Grimes-Beech years ago in a couple of Hallmark movies called Christmas Incorporated (2015) and Date With Love (2016). She was new to me at the time and I really liked her. I looked forward to seeing her in a lot more Hallmark movies but this is her first one in 6 years (I think she took a break to have a couple of kids). She's enjoyable to watch and a talented actress.

Shenae plays Sara, a successful lawyer in Manhattan still agonizing about having dropped plans 10 years earlier to make music in Nashville with Josh, her high school boyfriend of 3 years. He was devastated and never forgave her (how dare she accept a full ride scholarship to Yale!).

Niall Matter, who plays Josh, is one of the better leading men in Hallmark movies (he was great earlier this year in Rip in Time) and his pleasant charisma smoothes over the rough edges of his rather selfish, short sighted, and unrealistic character (his motto: be true to your love of music, and need to be a star, no matter what the cost).

Josh ignored countless efforts by Sara to communicate with him over the years, rather rudely turned down a request to join some musicians on stage at a local performance called Santa Jam, and seems to live in some sort of fantasy world about how to pay the bills. But his icy attitude towards Sara eventually thaws as they spend some time together and I actually liked them as a couple.

By the way, there's an erroneous "Goofs" posted here as well as an incorrect comment by a reviewer about the characters' ages. The "Goofs" reference to the characters being 10 years apart, and the suggestion that there was a creepy age gap in high school, is factually incorrect. The movie makes clear that they were both around the same age in high school (give or take a couple of years) before Sara left for college. Specifically, Josh notes that they haven't seen each other for 10 years (since she left). Assuming she graduated and left him to go to college at 18, that puts her at around 28 (the 10 years could have been a guesstimate). He also tells her he was 29 a year before the year they were reunited. He said he was in a band, on a national tour, and then quit to spend all his money trying to support a solo career for a year when he was 29. After that year, he turned 30 and moved back to Oakcrest to help his uncle, which is when he was reunited with Sara. Although the characters are around the same age, the actors who play them are 9 years apart in age (Niall was born in 1980 & Shenae was born in 1989). Perhaps that's where the goofs post went wrong.

This movie was directed by Hallmark acting veteran Peter Benson who has a cringey cameo as a rapper. In fact, there's a rather surprising lack of talent available for the big holiday show that Josh was lured back from Nashville to produce. I don't enjoy watching bad musical acts audition and perform so this part of the movie annoyed me. But seriously, no one in their old high school had any talent? And how hard is it to remember the word "branches"? Help the poor girl out and have her repeat the word a few times during rehearsal.

I was also annoyed by Sara's whining about being pressured into her life choices. Her mother was more than sensible when she encouraged Sara to accept a scholarship to a prestigious Ivy League school given her life experiences and poverty after her husband died (kind of weird how Sara didn't know how her parents met). And Sara obviously had some kind of affinity for the law if she was somehow being considered for partner in her 20s (not likely). But I doubt she banked as much money as Josh seemed to think she did. Assuming no gap years, she spent 4 years at Yale and 3 years at law school, which left her 3 years to make money, while living in high priced Manhattan and paying off her law school debt, before coming back to Oakcrest). I doubt she had much of a safety net, if any.

I liked the moment when Sara finally validated her mother and took some accountability during an emotional scene. The guilt trip she previously laid on her was unfair. I liked the second cameo (outside mom's new condo). I liked the idea of giving mom a love interest. I liked the way in which Sara reluctantly helped out. But one of the things that bothers me about some Hallmark movies, like this one, are the moments when characters are put in an "either or" "black or white" life choice situation without brainstorming all the possible alternatives and options. Life is full of lots of gray. And relationships require compromise. For example, one of the partners in my law firm plays in a band and is able to enjoy being a musician AND a lawyer. He's not an aberration.

The "conflict" created by "inviting the Nashville agent" (so what?) seemed really forced and Josh's line that "you shouldn't have to work to find happiness" may be the most naïve and unrealistic quote in the movie. Just ask Sara's mother, sympathetically played by Beth Broderick who has a nice moment describing the "mixed signals" between her head and her heart and gives a lovely solo performance (not sure where those strings came from though).

This movie probably doesn't deserve the 7 stars that I gave it. But I grade Hallmark on a curve and I really like Shenae Grimes-Beech. Plus Niall Matter was good as always.

Lost love lacking the regret it deserved
MickyG33322 November 2022
Compared to all movies: 6.3. Compared to Hallmark movies: 8.0.

On my journey with Hallmark, this was maybe my 4th or 5th movie this year, of MANY. I plan on watching a hundred before end of the year.

Warning: some spoilers, but not really, I mean all the Hallmark plots are basically the same: girl gets guy, or girl loses guy, gets him back. Also this review is not as polished as many, because while I want to review all 100+, I won't nearly have the time for it, so it's just off the cuff, rough draft, one and done - press enter - sent.

This movie made me smile a few times. The lead female is cute, seen her in 90210 years back, so she's a decent player, a great actress, and I enjoy her personality. She brings a lot of that to the screen. I can't imagine many movies being boring with her as a lead, and I wish she was more prolific these days, but it looks like she's been silent for years.

The male is rough, and likable. What I really love about him is his raw anger and bitterness for the first 30 minutes, then things start to change as their "unbreakable and everlasting" bond (which was destroyed in a moment of youthful ignorance) renews itself. I sure wish life was always like that: rekindling a long dead and buried love, like a dead flower, simply pour some magic water, and sprinkle some fertilizer and *poof*

I enjoyed the movie overall. It contains a good message: help the kids, focus on important stuff, and put all relationships on the back burner... she didn't even see her mom as much as she should've, you can read between the lines. And the mystery behind the man - we never know what that's about. Did he make it in Nashville or not? If so, why hasn't anyone heard of him? I guess she was his muse.

There is a parallel romance with her mother that is nice, and her guy is a likable blue collar fella. Mom sings, and her voice is "interesting", not bad, just different.

Entertainment value: this is good enough to watch to the end, which was decent by the way. Nice to have a good ending. The actors are cute and funny, and have developed personalities so I recommend this, however after I've seen 15 or so, this movie might not be in the top 10.

Better than some
Jackbv12325 November 2022
This story has many of the common elements of Christmas movies. Sara returns home to help mom move but brings work. She encounters her ex from high school and theirs was an ugly breakup. Their animosity melts away magically and they work on a Christmas concert.

The deeper theme of the movie is life changing choices and the regrets that come years later. This is another pretty common theme, but for me, this movie captured those emotions and dealt with them. There are no great highs or lows. There is one surprise that I don't think was foreshadowed at all.

There are some nice Christmas songs by members of the cast. Shenae Grimes-Beech has the best voice of the group.

The acting is good. The dialogue is good. There is good chemistry between the leads.

Pass on this one
sjswen8 December 2022
I really like Niall Matter but the story line was so slow and it could not keep me focused on the storyline. I enjoyed Niall's singing but not a fan of Beth Broderick's singing. The live interest Shenae sang lovely but I didn't like the chemistry between her and Niall. The relationship between mother (Beth) and daughter (Shenae) was good but the story was just so monotone just like the rest of the movie that it got lost. The story was just lackluster. I really wanted to like this movie but it didn't catch my interest. I wouldn't mind seeing the two leads in a better written movie. Here is to hoping a better story for these 2.

Christmas Music Movie with Excellent Acting
HallmarkJenny22 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sara and Josh's chemistry is astonishing! This plot was super simple, yet unexpected and different with how all the characters navigated their deferred dreams. I loved the small town and that Sara and Josh did so many Christmas festivities together.

Summary: Sara returns to her hometown to help her Mom move into a condo. Her ex-love Josh is directing the upcoming Christmas Concert and the two repeatedly cross-paths throughout town. Sara and Josh were musicians and moving to Nashville when Sara chose to attend Yale Law School and not risk an unsteady life as a musician. Sara's parents were on-the-road musicians when Sara was young and struggled to make ends meet and pushed her to go to college. With Josh's orchestrations, Sara and her Mom find their way back to their love of music.

"Your first love never leaves you."

MeetCute: Josh lights the tree to kick off the Oak Crest Carols and Lights Festival. Sara is taken aback by his presence and approaches him to say Hi. He brushes her off.

Sara and Josh argue and fight as they run into each other during the town's Christmas festivities. The two warm up to each other since Sara is playing piano for Josh's Christmas Concert Sara left to attend Yale instead of meeting Josh in Nashville for a gig.

Mid-Movie Kiss: After lighting their on-stage Christmas tree, Josh grabs Sara and spins her before kissing her! Their kiss is long and sensual. Great chemistry! She tells him they should call it a night and leaves.

Song: 'When I Think of Christmas' Sara's Dad wrote a Christmas song for her Mom, but before he could sing it, he passed away in a car accident. Sara wants to sing the song with Josh so that her Mom can rediscover her love of music.

Before singing the song on-stage, Josh invites Anna to sing the song in his place at the Christmas Concert. The song is titled "When I Think of Christmas."

Ending Kiss: Sara admits her feelings for Josh and asks him to come to New York with her for New Year's, but he does not think that is a good idea. After the Christmas Concert, he tells her he has a ticket to New York! They kiss on stage!

Kisses Kyra right on the agility course and tells her he loves her! They kiss while the crowd watches and claps as Sam comes in between them!

Very lackluster.
debbie_packer27 December 2022
I like both of the main actors, but they had no chemistry together and the story just fell flat. They just didn't work together. Also, I'm not sure what they were thinking with her hair. Hallmark is normally good with hair, makeup, and wardrobe, but her hair was atrocious (both the bangs and the dark color around her face). It was actually a distraction. Unlike her other movie that I watch every year, I was just glad to get this one over with. I won't be watching it again. The mother and her new friend had chemistry. It's too bad they didn't focus more of the movie on them. They paired well together.

Works despite the cliches
sheryl-watkins6 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think this movie sets a record for the number of cliches that fit in one Hallmark movie. The only things missing are a dog, cat, heirloom ornament or an angel.

Successful but not quite happy lawyer returns from New York to her home town. Check.

Reunites with high school boyfriend, whose Nashville career isn't quite working out. Check.

Small town with Christmas events every night, culminating in a big Christmas concert. Check.

Widowed mother sells the family home, and may be finding love with her neighbor's dad. Check, though the chemistry didn't convince me.

Hot chocolate, the guy who plays the mayor in every Hallmark movie, and did I hear the Christmas tree guy is named Nick? Check, check, and I'll have to listen more carefully if I watch this again.

But the movie works, thanks to the great scenery - including the oh-shucks good locks of Niall Matter.

Spoiler alert: I like that the movie leaves us with some loose ends.

The singing...?!
adeloris28 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Such an odd movie... I have watched a lot Hallmark movies, but this one was super weird. The singing was, as has been said, not great.

Aunt Zelda had a very hard time opening her mouth to speak, as though her upper lip was frozen, but her little love story was cute, and probably the best part of this movie.

Usually when the Hallmark leading lady leaves the big city it is to be with an established man whose career or family keep him from being able to relocate for her. Unfortunately, I don't think this dude had either. Who leaves their job in a law firm to make music with their high school sweetheart, when neither of them can sing?!

Not Hallmark's best effort, in my opinion.

aab8742 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Favorite scene with

Sara Thompson (Shenae Grimes-Beech) - Her Mom telling her about her Past with Music and her Dad and why she Encouraged her to go to College instead of Pursuing Music. Beautiful Scene. BTW #1, I Loved this Movie! BTW #2, I Love, Love, Love Niall Matter (Josh)!!! He is So Dang Charming and So Dang Hot!!! BTW #3, So Dang Cool that Director Peter Benson Cameoed as Bad Auditioner and Jonathan Bennett Cameoed as Lester!!! 2 Very Hilarious Cameos!!! BTW #4, There were Moments when I thought that Sara (Shenae Grimes-Beech) and Josh (Niall Matter) were Very Selfish. She seemed Very Upset that he chose Music over her and he seemed Very Upset that she chose College over him. I know that it was Jealousy. But it was Very Selfish of them to Act like they did towards each other!

Set in Tennessee.

Forgettable
mbiv7773 December 2022
I'm retired now, but I made my living as a musician and nothing bugs me more than actor portrayals of musicians. They look ridiculous.

In this case there really wasn't much to sing about.

Also, I moved last year at Christmas, and there was nary a Christmas decoration to be seen as I'd just have to pack them up again.

Ok, enough venting.

This movie involves a former musician New York lawyer who goes home at Christmas and runs into old flame/musical partner who is putting on a Christmas show using local talent. She ends up spending way more time helping him than her mother, but fortunately there is a ruggedly handsome carpenter in the condo next door.

Not much of a plot, really, and the big ending pretty much fizzled too.

Five.

Stumbled at the finish line
aheard-804-2070022 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film had promise, despite an rather dull and uneventful plot development. However, both my wife and I howled out loud in pain when the final spotlight song of the movie was taken at the end by Beth Broderick, who sadly butchered the song. It would've been far, far better to end as the principal characters had intended in the storyline, with them singing the song. Niall Matter & Shenae Grimes-Beech produced really excellent harmonies in a short song segment earlier in the film, and we had been looking forward to a fuller length version of this. Unfortunately, the film flat on its face at the finish line and undid all the good of the plot line of their two characters getting together to sing once more.

I Don't Like My Television Anymore
calebcalebwhitney27 November 2022
You'd think if you were going to make a movie about professional singers, you'd cast actors that don't sound horrible when they "sing." Not so here, because you see these are actors, pretending to be someone else, and apparently they're pretending they're someone who can sing. The mother, played by Beth Broderick has an incredibly grating speaking voice, and when she sings it's like nails on a chalkboard, yet her character is supposed to be some kind of retired legendary singer. This film is stupid and horrible and insults the audience. I guess suspending disbelief includes imagining the noise coming from the actors' mouth is singing. I once had a terrible nightmare that I was back in Ireland at my dad's wake and some mad scientist mortician had connected a pipe into my deceased father's lungs so the mourners could pull levers and a machine would force air into my dad's lungs and up through his larynx to make him talk. But of course it was all very macabre and terrifying. That being said, the singing in this film was worse than my nightmare.

There are actually no redeeming features to this movie. I resent my mother for talking me into watching it and I resent having to take my valuable time writing this review, which means by extension I resent you all. I'm writing this for you after all in the hope I might spare you the discomfort of sitting through it.

I keep thinking about those monkeys at the zoo that throw excrement at people and wondering if perhaps I should do that to my television. If that sort of thing makes the monkeys feel better it might do me some good too.

Eh
ladycatherine-0433725 October 2023
About as typical as a hallmark Christmas movie can be. Charge the two mains did an excellent job at conveying their characters. The biggest problem I had with this entire movie was the fact that the mother couldn't sing to save her life and couldn't carry a tune if you put a handle on it. I think another reviewer said it best. This movie would've been much better if it ended with the two main characters singing that final song instead of bringing the mother up on stage. Really killed the entire mood and flow of the movie every time that woman opened her mouth to sing. Out of tune and pitch is being nice.
