With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

’90s nostalgia is in full swing and horror fans are loving it. Many people are revisiting movies they grew up with, while others are discovering those same titles for the first time. And it’s not only cinematic terror that has everyone talking.
Over the past couple of years, the interest in retro books has been on the rise. Combined with ’90s sentimentality, teen horror fiction from the decade has become a special niche for collectors, many of whom are part of Instagram’s enthusiastic community of “bookstagrammers.”
A large portion of the teen horror titles released during the ’90s are now available in e-book format, but the original editions with their colorful covers and witty taglines are the ones we look for while perusing the shelves of used bookstores.

I originally took notice of the project when the trades announced that the oft-used supporting indie starlet Louisa Krause (non-related pic above — who we interviewed back in the day for Martha Marcy May Marlene) was the featured “potential screamer” lead on this project. Filmmaker Jordan Galland has flirted with Park City before, his debut Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead (2009) received a special screening status at Slamdance. Along with his sophomore film item Alter Egos (2012), the summer shot Brooklyn set Ava’s Possessions basically informs us that the musician slash filmmaker’s interests lie within the framework of the horror genre. Certainly the addition of supporting players include Lou Taylor Pucci, Jemima Kirke, Stella Schnabel (You Wont Miss Me) and John Ventimiglia amps up the end product, and Galland’s ongoing creative collaboration with musician Sean Lennon might earmark the project as an appointment with the occult that avoids trappings of...

Alloy Entertainment is developing "Sisterhood Everlasting," a film adaptation of the fifth and final novel in Ann Brashares' 'Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants' series.
'Everlasting' would mark the third film in the series and picks up ten years later after the Sisterhood friends have grown apart. Tibby tries to bridge the distance by reuniting the girls for a trip that will change their lives forever.
Ken Kwapis, who helmed the first film in 2005, will return for the third while Liz Garcia ("The Lifeguard, "Dawson's Creek") will adapt the script.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the winners for the 2013 Eda (Excellent Dynamic Activism) Awards! And predictably, by now, Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" took the top honors with McQueen taking home the best director trophy, and Lupita Nyong'o the best supporting actress honor.
The great team of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for "Dallas Buyers Club" emerged victorious with their wins for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively.
Nicole Holofcener's "Enough Said" won two for best woman director and woman screenwriter for Holofcener.
Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," on the other hand, did not get love...at all! It won the Hall of Shame and The Movie You Wanted to Love But Just Couldn't awards. Its star, Cameron Diaz took home the Actress Most in Need of a New Agent award. Yikes! But they're true though!

The showstopping central musical number is a glorious anthem to female power and ability… and so, in fact, is the whole wonderful movie. Disney is finally getting it. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m starved for stories about girls and women
I’m “biast” (con): the trailer was a bit a goofy
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Oh my goddess. Where did Frozen come from? It didn’t come from Hans Christian Andersen, that’s for certain; this bears so little resemblance to his “The Snow Queen” that I wonder why they even bothered with the connection. It did spring from the grand Disney tradition of full-on Broadway-style animated musicals, like we haven’t really seen since the 1990s. But unlike 2009’s throwback The Princess and the Frog, which felt like nothing more than a tired retread of the pursuit-of-romance motif that had long since been laid to rest,...

Before it was known as Cantuckee, Kimberly Levin’s Land of Tomorrow successfully found some coin via Kickstarter and then had stints at the Ifp Lab and the U.S. in Progress in ’12. Looking back at the fest’s history, specifically with regards to the U.S Dramatic Comp category, all it takes is one programmer to champion a micro-budgeted project and set it up against the big boy indies – and this sure feels like one of those Davids among Goliath. Featuring Joanne Kelly, Tom Bower and Alex Shaffer from Win Win and The Lifeguard fame, the drama will benefit tremendously from the presence of composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.

What's It About? Joss Whedon's ("The Avengers") modern retelling of the Shakespeare classic follows two couples with different takes on romance. Benedick (Alexis Denisof) and Beatrice (Amy Acker) are older and disdainful of their love, while the sweet young Claudio (Fran Kranz) and Hero (Jillian Morgese) are deeply absorbed by their love.
Why We're In: Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" is a refreshing and charming take on the classic comedy for its unique blending of the Shakespearian dialogue with a contemporary setting and aesthetic. While it sticks to the original content and doesn't add anything wholly revolutionary, it's nonetheless an entertaining addition to the canon of Shakespeare film adaptations.

2013 has been a busy year for Kristen Bell. Shortly after the actress and Dax Shepard welcomed daughter Lincoln in March, the new mom got back to work on the Kickstarter-funded Veronica Mars movie. Editor’s Note: This review originally appeared as part of our Sundance 2013 coverage, and now A Teacher being released into theaters near you. This year’s Sundance Film Festival was rife with films about inappropriate sexual relationships, especially already-shocking May-December dalliances made still more inappropriate by uncomfortable power dynamics. Drake Doremus’ Breathe In tackled the almost-romance between an exchange student and her male guardian (one who was also her teacher), Liz W. Garcia’s The Lifeguard featured a twentysomething female lifeguard who takes up with a teen boy who lives in the condo complex where she works, and Anne Fontaine’s Two Mothers centered on adult female friends who both fall in love with the other’s son, ensuring that Hannah Fidell‘s A Teacher would fit quite neatly in the festival’s most trendy programming. But fortunately for the director/writer/producer, Fidell’s finely tuned feature is a stand-out film in an apparently crowded field...

Kristen Bell isn't her usual bubbly self in her latest movie, the Liz Garcia-directed dark comedy "The Lifeguard." While a lot of that has to do with the fact that her character, Leigh, is on the cusp of her 30s and kinda depressed, at least a small sliver can be attributed to the fact that Bell was pregnant and tired during filming.
The 33-year-old actress, who gave birth to daughter Lincoln in March, tells Collider she found out she was pregnant while on the Pittsburgh set. "My reality was a bit challenging because I was so tired, but I didn't know why," Bell says. "I was like, 'Well, I have mono. Let's just wrap this movie up, and I'm gonna go to the hospital because I have mono, obviously.' And I didn't. I had pregnancy."

Editor’s Note: Allison’s review of The Lifeguard originally ran during this week’s Sundance Film Festival, but we’re re-posting it now as the film opens in limited release today. Everyone has those moments when they question where their life is going, but hitting the pause button can end up doing more damage than good. When The Lifeguard‘s Leigh (Kristen Bell), a reporter for the Associated Press, covers a story about a tiger who had been kept in a cramped Manhattan apartment, Leigh’s overly emotional reaction to the scratch marks on the windowsill make it clear Leigh is struggling with her own anxieties about being trapped in a life she did not see for herself. Without a second thought, Leigh hops on a train and returns to her parent’s home in Connecticut, the lush landscape a stark difference to the harsh New York metropolis she is looking to escape. In The Lifeguard, Kristen Bell plays a woman on the verge of 30 who has a meltdown, quits her reporter job in New York, then heads back to her hometown for some peace and quiet. But that escapism comes at price — from her parents’ short-lived appreciation of her homecoming, to her reconnecting with old friends who’ve changed (including best friend Mel, played by Mamie Gummer), to ultimately the titular summer job that defines her new life in the sleepy suburb.
