Goodbye, Mr. Chips!
pixrox130 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Recorded shortly before Mr. O'Toole announced his retirement from acting, he comes off here as still making a feisty battle against Father Time. Obviously edited down to selective highlights from the original Q & A conducted by TCM TV Channel host Robert Osborne in front of a film festival's live audience, the remaining footage shows Mr. O'Toole sharp as a tack, despite his initial disclaimers about having trouble with names and being subject to a tendency to "ramble." A notoriously hard-drinking Irishman, Mr. O'Toole illustrates that overindulgence does not take an equal toll on everyone (though he DOES sort of resemble that picture up in Dorian Gray's attic!). This presentation splices in clips from some of Mr. O'Toole's more successful films, such as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA; BECKET; THE LION IN WINTER; GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS; and MY FAVORITE YEAR between the Q & A snippets. A scene from one of his earliest flicks, THE DAY THEY ROBBED THE BANK OF ENGLAND, also is included here.

Peter O'Toole: Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival (2012)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

This here is pretty much the same format as TCM's "Private Screenings" series as Robert Osborne sits down with the legend Peter O'Toole to discuss his career. The only difference is that this here was taped at the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival in front of an audience of fans. O'Toole certainly enjoys to tell stories and we get plenty of great ones including how he got into acting, his thoughts on what actors today should be doing and of course there are many great films discussed including LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, BECKET, THE LION IN WINTER, MY FAVORITE YEAR and GOODBYE MR. CHIPS. O'Toole has plenty of nice stories to share including how he ended up naming his daughter after Katharine Hepburn even before the two of them worked together. There's also a great story involving Richard Burton and the agreement they made while making BECKET. The actor also talks about his feelings on why he never won an Academy Award and he admits that it's something he'd still like to do. Overall this is a very fun interview with Osborne asking a lot of nice questions but best of all is that he allows O'Toole to go off on his stories. There's plenty of talk about LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and the actor is simply great fun to listen to. Fans should really enjoy hearing the actor open up, which isn't all too common.
