An excellent first episode.

Quirke digs deeper when his adopted brother Malachy appears to tamper with a body that has shown up on his slab, Christine Falls.

Gabriel Byrne is terrific as Quirke, he's a fascinating character, brilliantly performed, so good that we get to learn his back story, his place in life, and how smart he is.

I loved the story, so utterly bleak and nasty, but captivating and intriguing nonetheless. Terrific production values, this is incredibly well made, atmospheric and moody.

Amazing acting, Byrne was awesome, in great company with Michael Gambon and the velvet voiced Stanley Townsend.

It feels like another show that got away, it seemed The BBC and ITV were battling to land a quiet historical crime series, The BBC failed us with this one, ITV failed with Jericho, a shame, as both were excellent I thought, success would be found with George Gently and Endeavour.

Great start, 8/10.

Great series

Warning: Spoilers
The series is based on the hugely popular series "Quirke" by Benjamin Black. A crime series is set in Dublin in the 1950s. Quirke, played by Gabriel Byrne, is the Chief Pathologist in the Dublin City Morgue. Quirke is a powerful character and he is fascinated with the secret of cadavers' deaths. Gabriel Byrne plays the conflicted Quirke who is a consultant pathologist and by night, a hard drinker.

When he discovers the death of a woman that has been covered up by his brother, he goes on a journey to discover the truth, which he hopes will quench the personal guilt and anguish he suffers. Where it leads him to is a lot closer to home than he imagined.

The series is very actual,as it shows the controversial operation of the Catholic Church in Ireland at that time.

Basically a long cigarette commercial

Every character in every scene lights up a cigarette! Nothing to do with the plot line ( which is fairly intriguing) so the production must have been paid lots of money by the tobacco companies. The program is intended to show how great it is to have a cigarette on any occasion - stressful, happy, sad, whatever. By doing that they expect to sell more cigarettes to more people. And that means more people will die of cancer. The people behind this should be ashamed!

Don't tell me people smoked more ine the fifties, when this is set. They also ate, urinated, cursed, farted - but the writers didn't have those activities in every scene. The production is simply a cancer- causing cigarette commercial, nothing more.
