Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends
Tweekums21 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
One only has to watch the opening of this series to realise it is going to be heavy on fan service; not that that is a surprise in a harem series. The story follows Kodaka Hasegawa, a transfer student who is believed to be a hooligan because of his blond hair; actually it is natural due to his English mother. He soon meets up with friendless girl Yozora who decides to start the 'Neighbours Club' to help people make friends. This club is soon joined by Sena, the daughter if the school's headmaster, Rika a perverted scientist and Yukimura, the only other boy to join although his gender is open to question and he usually wears a dress! Completing the group are Kodaka's younger sister Kobato, who believes herself to be a vampire and Maria, the club's supervising teacher who just happens to be a ten year old nun! Once the club is established they get up to the sort of things one would expect in this kind of series; going to the pool, the beach, a festival and singing karaoke amongst other things. The group are clearly becoming friends as the series progresses but that doesn't stop them being antagonistic towards each other; in particular Yozora and Sena and Kobato and Maria.

I enjoyed this series far more than I'd originally expected to; yes there is a fair amount of fan service; mostly involving the large-chested Sena whose bikini leaves little to the imagination. There is a little bit of actual nudity although this is hidden by 'lens flare'... presumably things won't be hidden on DVD releases. The characters were pretty good although Yozora's bullying of Sena did reach uncomfortable levels at times. The reason I enjoyed it was because there were a good number of laughs in every episode; the way Yukimura perverted everything was hilarious!

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles

It had its funny moments even if it's not one of the best anime I've seen....

Warning: Spoilers
I definately would say that this anime isn't great to watch if your parents are around. It has really its inappropriate moments like episode 2 (season 2) was unexpected when they brought a boys love porno into their club and like some of the girls reacted really funny. I really thought that episode was the funniest from all the other episodes.

Although I would still consider this anime a bit blinding of fan service and harem all the way. That's why I definately don't consider this the best anime I've seen but hey if you like 6 overly cute girls surrounding a guy, then feel free to watch this at your own free will totally!

Cute and Funny but Unfinished

(7/10) A Harem with every trope in the book this dude even got a reverse trap in love with him. The story of a boy with blonde hair and his struggle to make friends, Haganai was entertaining but had an anticlimactic ending. It's a good series but its missing the third season it so desperately needs.

Watched it for the plot (no seriously)

Warning: Spoilers
Let me start off by saying, yes, this anime has quite a bit of fan service. If you're looking for that kind of thing, this anime has quite a bit for you. However, if you look past the harem anime staples, it's pretty humorous, and the characters will become endearing to the viewer. The story follows Kodaka Hasegawa, self-proclaimed "no-lifer" as he searches for friendship, love, and belonging. He and Yozora Mikazuki create the "Neighbor's Club" a club where a lovable bunch of misfits band together to create friendships. This series has quite a bit of crude humor (and a little bit of nudity), so viewer discretion is advised. It's a harem anime, but the protagonist won't do anything about it because he's afraid of hurting anybody. This anime deals a lot with high school drama, but is full of laughs and hijinks that'll keep you coming back for more. I love this show, and the fan service isn't the reason why. Give it a chance. Thank me later.

Haganai + Next
Nonomemes22 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The story of a transfer student Kodaka struggling to make friends, originally due to his mixed blonde-brown hair, eventually cross Yozora who also have issues in making friends, they found the "neighbors club" aiming to get some.

Some charters are interesting, but there are also many issues in this series so overall I would say we are barely reaching the bar.

And the cover (theme) does not help, it looks like harem + fan service With regards to harem it is not so pronounced, pretty realistic till half of the 2nd season (not like in theme, don't worry). With regards to fan service instead, yes there is fan service mainly caused by Rika who is clearly the worst character. Especially low the episodes where she says "I do not need glasses, I was wearing just for fashion..."... and also the last episode of second season is very bad.

The fist season and especially the ending of it instead is much better, where driver is Yozora (best character).

I would say 1st season is more soft, teenager series while 2nd series goes slowly towards otaku fan service, just barely saved by Aoi and Hinata who are pretty good characters.

GOOD, LIGHT HEARTED, CHEERFUL
samimakhtar-4655418 November 2020
This is perfect anime for those who hate intense bloodshed. Story is simple but interesting. It took me away from my miserable life. There is no special surprise in this anime but if you watch it you definitely find it funny and interesting. Above all you will feel like you are the mc in the anime.

A solid gem of an anime
robert7879 October 2021
Sometimes you dont need a crazy idea to make a good anime. While it may not be anything special compared to some harem/slice of life anime it does have alot of humor, relatable situations and characters.

It's definitely good to watch and has memorable parts that will make you wish there was a third season. Once you get over the trope of the typical dense main character in a harem you will find that this anime is a solid gem.

Don't believe me? Give it the 3 episode treatment. It's fairly light hearted with some fan service trickled in here and there to keep the 'culture' alive. It has a reasonably deep story if you watch till the end of season 2 and is very enjoyable for those wanting an anime that has some charm to it.

Do Not Watch, needlessly cruel for absolutely no reason
Paradox-Warrior19 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
While the anime had a good core idea, it very quickly fails to bring it to any kind of fruition and actually becomes quite uncomfortable and unenjoyable to watch early on.

The premise of the entire show is that the lead character, Kodaka, has the appearance of a thug (due to his mixed race bloodline of Great Britain and Japanese), but is actually a decent and caring person. Because of a few misunderstandings among his peers, he's labeled as basically being a criminal and can't make any friends. He then encounters a girl named Yozora who is also "socially awkward" and basically forces him to join a club she created called The Neighbors Club with the express purpose of learning how to make friends. Now, on its face, this isn't really a bad concept for a slice of life/humor anime. You'd get to see how several socially awkward/outcast individuals try to figure out how to make friends before figuring out that they've already succeeded with one another and come to cherish their little group in solidarity.

Unfortunately, this is not what happens in this show. Instead, you have a really bad version of a harem anime, especially since the main character and only male protagonist doesn't actually seem to have any kind of romantic interest in anyone. That's kind of an important part when you have a harem concept. What's more, while it seems like he's a kind person, he's also a doormat with very little personality of his own. I get that he's supposed to be the "straight man" in the show, but honestly a plank of wood might be more entertaining than him.

The harem itself is just as bad. To make things easy I'll just list the characters off along with their never-changing traits:

Yozora-creator of the club, doesn't actually think she needs or wants friends, is unconscionably cruel to another member of the club for literally no reason other than she's a cruel, despicable person.

Sena-daughter of the school's headmaster, busty (but not comically so), likes video games, probably one of the few characters in the show that can be likable.

Rika-supposedly a genius whose only purpose at the school is to invent things in a private science lab even though we never see any kind of evidence regarding this supreme intellect, an absolute hentai addict, always refers to herself in the third person (no idea why, never explained).

Yukimora-a "boy" (I'll explain later) who looks up to Kodaka as a bad boy idol, yet for 99% of the running time of the series dresses and presents himself as female, despite not being a trap or transgender because supposedly a "real man" could do that and still not be mistaken as a girl, is diminutive and slender in shape, and is clearly voiced by a female voice actor.

Kobato-younger middle-school-aged sister of Kodaka who wants to join the club, is absolutely obsessed with a vampire anime character to the point that she constantly pretends she is the character by dressing like her, talking like her, and even acting like she is a vampire. One of the very few characters in the series that was actually entertaining to watch.

Maria-ten-year-old (yes, you heard that right), nun, FACULTY ADVISOR to the Neighbors Club who is in a constant rivalry with Kobato because... well... she's a nun and Kobato is a "vampire".

That's literally the only character traits for all of the players in this anime. I had hopes that the show would do something more with them, particularly Sena and Kobato because they really were the only two likable characters in the entire show, but the writers squandered the opportunity so poorly. What you end up with is crossdressing just for the sake of what really can't even qualify as "shock value" since the character was voiced by a female actor from the very beginning, really stupid rivalries that made no sense, and horrible nudity that absolutely falls into the realm of pedophilia instead of "loli" regarding Maria nd Kobato (to which our "leading man" never reacts to even though he damn well should have been).

The biggest offender of them all on this one is the way the character of Yozusa is used. This character is cruel just for the sake of cruelty and I honestly felt uncomfortable every moment she was on screen. While things started out pretty tame, what with her perhaps being jealous of Sena's far more impressive breasts, that quickly devolved into the kind of bullying you'd expect from a dark drama or even a horror movie. For one, she CONSTANTLY refers to Sena as "meat", presumably referencing her large breasts, along with a whole host of other derogatory slang in that vein. Secondly, Yozusa is absolutely cruel to Sensa for absolutely no reason other than she derives some kind of sick, sadistic pleasure out of torturing the girl. And yes, I do mean torture. There is a scene where Sensa asks Yozusa to put suntan lotion on her back and Yozusa proceeds to to so... using her foot. What follows in that scene almost had me shut off the entire series for good. While it's nothing graphic, Yozusa verbally and physically abuses Sensa by grinding her foot into the other girl's back, dumping very copious amounts of lotion on her (clearly symbolizing something out of hentai), and sneeringly telling Sensa that she probably secretly loves being treated in that way while also demanding she beg Yozusa to stop like a good little slave. Like I said, it's very disturbing and does absolutely nothing to forward anything even remotely like a plot. What's more, NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE. Seriously, the entire cast of characters is witness to horrible physical and psychological abuse by one of their club members, and not only do none of them say anything about it, it is literally shrugged off in the very next scene like it never happened. Bear in mind this isn't the first time something like this has happened in regard to Yozusa. She does things like this throughout the entire series, though the scene I just described was easily the worst, and no one ever says anything about it. No one yells at her, no one calls her out on being a horrible excuse for a human being, nothing.

This, more than anything else absolutely tanked the entire series in my mind and I don't recommend anyone watch it.

Waste of time!
LeParas-122 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I did not find it funny past a certain point. For the first three episodes the show revolves around the mistaken delinquent and the two "heroines" of the series - Yozora and Sena. These episodes for the most part were quite sharp, and as Sena and Yozora's antics grew and grew, Kodaka's role as the straight man would be stressed further and further.

It's a bitter reality, but Haganai is just another generic ecchi harem. The craziness gets to much out of hand and amidst all the chaos you lose the ability to sympathize with any of the characters. Thank goodness the nun got naked! That sure helped alleviate tension! The characters are too unbelievable for an anime that tries to deal with an actual issue. It's about a group of freaks trying to become friends, except said group is so eccentric that such personalities could never exist. There is no insight into any of the characters of the show save Yozora and Sena, and the little that is given into them is so cliché and sparse that it's hard to separate Haganai from the thousands of other ecchi anime's. It is a shallow production laden with offensive language and poop jokes. And not the good kind of poop jokes, just repetitions of the word "poop". The show struggles with trying to be realistic whilst adding so many unrealistic elements it just became frustrating.
