The days of the old CW network are over. Last season, Nexstar took over running the smallest broadcast network and most of the network's remaining original scripted series came to a close. Nexstar is choosing to focus on airing inexpensive acquired programming and unscripted shows in order to make the network profitable. The CW shows depend on ratings more than ever before and have to earn their keep to stay on the air. How many shows will be cancelled or renewed during the 2023-24 season? Stay tuned.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

Nexstar reported its second-quarter 2023 earnings Tuesday, revealing the TV stations group giant had turned a profit of $153 million in Q2, while its CW broadcast network posted a loss of $78 million for the April-June quarter.
For the CW, which was formally acquired by Nexstar in October 2022 from Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, a year-over-year comparison can’t be drawn based on the lack of financial results disclosed publicly by its former parent companies. But it’s long been known the old CW was not profitable, and this $78 million is an improvement over the $83 million loss the CW posted in Q1 of this year.
Nexstar CFO’s Lee Ann Gliha expanded on the CW’s performance during the earnings call Tuesday morning, stating that the CW generated $75 million in revenue in Q2, and, with some favorable adjustments accounting for a $3 million one-time expense attributed mostly to restructuring charges, took only a $74 million loss for the quarter.

It was the kind of professional nightmare that sports documentary filmmakers can only dream about: Graham Rahal, the veteran IndyCar driver and six-time race winner, was slowest in qualifying for the Indy 500 on Sunday – a day that ended in tears and baffled defeat for the 34-year-old still seeking his first win at Indianapolis.
With 34 cars trying to qualify for 33 spots, the son of open-wheel legend Bobby Rahal suddenly found himself out of the world’s biggest race, holding his head in his hands and sobbing. For an extra storytelling flourish, Rahal’s dad and team co-owner Bobby Rahal – whose team partners include David Letterman – had the exact same thing happen to him exactly 30 years ago.
Then, one day later, all the melodrama that went down on the track would be turned completely upside-down. And it was all on camera for the documentary crew shooting the CW’s “100 Days to Indy” series,...
