A vigilante stalks the streets of London
Tweekums16 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
With his first case of the third series solved it is time for Luther to catch another killer; this time it is a vigilante who is killing those he thinks the law has treated too leniently. We first see him as he come to the rescue of a young couple being savagely attacked by a gang; he kills some of them and when questioned the woman he saved refused to help Luther; after all she sees him as her Saviour. It is clear that he is more than that though; he has left his calling card with each of the victims; it contains a web address and a time. At the appointed time be makes a streamed broadcast outlining his grievances; his own wife was had been killed by a man out on bail and it is clear that he won't stop until he is caught or killed. If that case wasn't enough for Luther Det Supt Stark and DCI Gray have approached his new girlfriend Mary and shown him the file of allegations against him.

This was a fine opening to the latest case and those concerned about the number of women brutally murdered on the BBC, including the previous case for Luther, will be relieved that none are killed in this instalment. The killer is shown in a light that initially makes him come across as more sympathetic than most screen killers… after all he is killing those society wants behind bars. However it soon becomes apparent that he can't be reasoned with and seems to revel in the role he sees himself in… namely an executioner removing the most reviled from society. This serves to make the story more interesting as it makes a change to have a killer who is more sympathetic than his victims. The investigation into Luther takes a bit of a back seat which to my mind is a good thing as the main case is more interesting; in mainly serves to stir up problems for Luther with Mary rather than anything else. There are plenty of tense moments; the initial assault on the couple was shocking and fairly disturbing as was the scene where a mob tries to prevent Luther from saving one of the vigilante's victims… these weren't half as shocking as the end of the episode though… I won't say what happens as I don't want to spoil it! Overall I thought this was a really good episode and look forward to seeing what happens next… the preview certainly suggested things will get even tenser before the case is solved.

Fighting Fire with Gasoline

Warning: Spoilers
Would you rather be a dead hero or a live coward? This show seems to put people out there routinely as cannon fodder. Once again, an unarmed police officer stands his ground and he is killed. How many times has Luther or one of his colleagues been stabbed, shot, beaten nearly to death or worse, because all they had was their gift of gab. Ultimately, these guys are taken in or killed. But the death of Ripley was totally unnecessary. The bad guy asked him to back off. It would have been prudent until he had backup. Still, this is an intense effort. Luther's adversary continues to stalk him, now pretty much alone. There is still that guy out there and Mary is in serious trouble.

Captivating.

A Vigilante turns up on the scene and halts two youngsters being attacked by a gang of youths, a series of attacks against known criminals begins.

I absolutely love this episode, this is one of the best episodes of Luther in my humble opinion, this was the one that truly did get me hooked on the show.

It's not often that Idris Elba is matched in the acting and charisma stakes, but here though, Elliot Cowan is off the scale, his performance is amazing, he's believable, sincere, tough and cuts an imposing physical figure.

The opening sequences are amazing, so dramatic, the scene between Cowan and Elba is incredibly tense. The ending though, that is of the scale, it's so sad.

It's such an interesting case, is it hard to disagree in principle with what he's doing, not sure many victims would criticise him.

I loved it, 10/10.

The whole plot here takes a weird twist with no real explanation . The motivation of the Killer just changes from wanting to deal with wrong doers to shooting cops and smashing up cops houses .No real explanation for this is given .

How could they mess it up like this?

Sorry, I don't get it. This third season is a desaster. There is no continuity in the story and no character development at all. It is driven by cheap jump scares and characters that behave totally illogical. This is very lazy storytelling!

......And the Cobblers just keep on coming.

I can only imagine that the BBC were struggling for proper writers for this series. Lazy, lazy writing has left us with the eye-bleedingly & totally unconvincing DCI Gray & DS Stark. How in one scene they can arrest someone for murder then in the next tell the same person who did it is beyond belief. Thank God there aren't that many episodes left.

A Disaster
Warin_West-El6 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently the producers hired the cheapest writers they could find. AND IT SHOWS.

Whereas the final episode of last season was a triumphant burst of originality, we're back to the cut and paste cliche-driven BS of the first season.

ONE: DS Justin Ripley chases down Tom Marwood WITHOUT BACKUP.

TWO: Backup arrives TOO LATE (big surprise, there).

THREE: Backup has no means to call an ambulance.

FOUR: Tom Marwood stalks Mary Day out of the blue, with no motivational foundation.

IMHO, all of the scripts for this season have been poorly developed. And the one for this episode is a complete disaster.
