They're back better than ever.
agentsofsword25 February 2024
This was honestly surprising on how good this pilot was. The 6 years wait was very very worth it for this moment. It takes it's time to get it going but there was never a dull moment. I love how this first episode was entirely on Rick's perspective and the second one focuses on Michonne. This pilot is very promising and I hope it continues to impress me and is consistent with it's writing.

Andrew Lincoln puts on an amazing performance along with his co-actor who played Okafor. It's insane how this man doesn't have more roles in his filmography. The pacing of this episode was really good and I love the route they're going with Rick. His struggles and decisions coming up to him and eating him inside. I really don't have anything more to say but this was really really good. This was the first time in years I have been this excited for a tv show.

Worth the 6 year wait.
plode25 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
They did it. They found a way to bring that feeling back to The Walking Dead. That special feeling you got watching episodes in the beginning, it's back. A great job by Andrew Lincoln to depict the slow descent into madness and acceptance, and huge shoutouts to Thorne who is great and the Okafor character who deserved more than one episode. I had my doubts about how the CRM story may come across but they managed to make me hate them in one episode. Good sign. The scene when Rick tells Okafor about his Dad burning their farm may be one of the best in the episode. I did not expect the twist at the end of it but the death of Okafor was kinda awesome. Rick crash landing safely didn't surprise me but who took out all of his men certainly did. Where will they take it from here? Rick reported his location to the CRM as he crashed so this should get messy fast. I hope they can keep up this pace. This was worth the 6 year wait.

TWD IS BACK
AndyyKugi25 February 2024
I decided to start this before watching either of the other spinoffs and WE ARE SO BACK This was one of the best episodes of the walking dead and exceeded all expectations. The walking dead usually always has the best cliffhangers but the one on this episode is on a whole other level. I can't even write a proper review I'm so happy and satisfied with what I've just watched. If you have watched up to s9 ep5 of twd you need to watch this because it is so satisfying as someone who loves the show and dragged themselves through all 11 seasons through good and through bad. Scott Gimple is cooking with this show and I can't wait for next episodes.

Better than the last 3 seasons of the main show and all spin offs
korzac26 February 2024
This episode went way over my expectations of it. After the final few years of TWD and the poor spin offs last year, I didn't have much faith in this delivering something I wanted to see. But it did, and then some. Seeing and hearing about Ricks tribulations over the years was important and very well done. It felt like we lived some of that with him. The action woven in was well done and traditional TWD, gory as hell. I think having this first episode focus on Rick was the smart move, though I am anxious to see what Michonne has gone through as well. OG TWD fans, this is what a lot of us have been hoping for, eat up.

PEAK THE WALKING DEAD
raulungurean25 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This first episode of "The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live" shows us what's been going on with the famous Rick Grimes and Michonne all these years and also answers a lot of questions we fans had. It's an absolutely brilliant episode in every way and Andrew Lincoln's performance is worth every second of it, once again killing this role. The episode offers plenty of action, mystery, tension, and a continuation of the universe's story to appreciate. The acting and writing are also to be really appreciated, clearly showing the effort put in by the whole production.

RICK GRIMES is BACK and has very well executed character development and a very interesting continuing story. This episode shows him in a way I've never seen him before and I loved every second of it. It's very possible we'll get a third prime of his, namely an experienced and trained CRM soldier. For me he is clearly the best character in the whole walking dead universe and one of the best main characters in all of fiction.

In my opinion it was well worth it, for us fans of the show, to wait 6 years to see such a return of long and beloved characters and an amazing reunion. The reunion after many years between the two protagonists was full of emotions and shock, and I was completely speechless during the whole time I watched it. Their eyes said it all at the moment of reunion and there was certainly no need for words (perfect acting). It is clearly one of the BEST moments in The Walking Dead universe!

I'm very very curious what the next episodes hold and I absolutely can't wait to watch them!

Conclusion: this episode is peak The Walking Dead!!

Better Than Ever
vovakurtianyk25 February 2024
Rick Grimes returns in both a fascinating and shocking fashion, par for the course for his character.

Despite the fact that the viewers have been familiar with Rick Grimes for years, the show still manages to tell us new things about him and develop his character.

Despite this being only one single episode, this show's pilot is better than any other TWD spin-offs' episode and arguably the pilot of the main show.

All-in-all, relentless action scenes, incredible performances all across the board, lore establishment, fast-paced plot and outstanding character development make this new TWD spin-off well worth the wait.

The Walking Dead comes back at his absolute prime.
domenicocetorelli-2659125 February 2024
This episode is a tribute to the character of Rick Grimes in all its forms, there is lore, there is insight into many doubts and uncertainties that the wonderful episode 5 of season 9 had left. We get a 360° view of Rick's past after the bridge explosion, and his years at CRM, there's everything a TWD UNIVERSE fan could want, action, psychological depth, adventure. This first episode is a real return to the origins, to a form that the series had lost a bit with some seasons, in particular the 11th, where the air of apocalypse and the fight against so many dangers were no longer perceived. Here we have a phenomenal interpretation by Andrew Lincoln, a direction and cinematography worthy of a high-budget film, if the series were to continue on this very high level of writing and staging, then we can certainly say that TWD has never gone away, but changes, mutates consequently. Giving us an incredible work, and a wonderful story.

Tied with some of the best series/season premiere on twd
Father-Buff-Cow25 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This definitely is the best walking dead episode in years. Honestly this episode is comparable with "Days Gone Bye" or "'No Sanctuary" and "The Day Will Come Where You Won't Be." This episode is genuinely brutal, the helicopter scene in the ending was genuinely mind blowing. The way this is shot is the best in the walking dead, the shots, the lighting is perfect. The acting this episode was also legitimately awesome, Rick, Throne, that one CRM dude. The first scene of Rick chopping his arm off was legitimately crazy, it really started the show of correctly and brought the feeling that anything can happen once more, and that was missing from twd s10,11, dead city, and ftwd. And the final scene, was brilliant. Other than Michonne and Rick, this show has basically made you scared about anyone else in the show that has already made their appearance, or will in the second episode's safety. I honestly cannot wait for Ep2 and to see where Michonne has been and what she has been doing, I really hope this show gets a second season, this is as good as prime walking dead.

The Ones who live is peak The walking dead
magnusthegamer26 February 2024
I came into this show really excited to see my favorite character after not seeing him for 6 years. It's one of the best episodes I have ever seen on TV. The intro was brilliant and shocking, and so freaking awesome. The episode was way better than I expected. The pacing was amazing, the action was fun and entertaining, and there were quite a few twists that I didn't see coming from a mile away. It did some things which I never thought The Walking Dead had the balls to do, and I'm all for it. The ending was awesome. I know this show is going to be freaking awesome. I'm glad TWD is back because I'm so ready for it.

Finally...
RSO_Media25 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Rick returns after his strange departure in Season 9 of 'The Walking Dead' in this new spin-off series 'The Ones Who Live'. The pilot met and exceeded my expectations. The circumstances of his leaving seemed so convoluted, as well as the fact that this 'Civic Republic' group has made numerous cameos in spin-off shows, each more cryptic than the next, so I wasn't really sure any follow-up could actually succeed. It kind of felt like they didn't know where they wanted to go with the Civic Republic storyline, although they probably had much of this story mapped out for a while. This is essentially taking the place of a planned theatrical film, so the scrapping of that might have lead to them dragging out the Civic Republic story longer than they'd intended.

Fortunately, they made it work, and actually grounded this group with some insight and backstory that actually makes some sense out of it. It's really awesome to see Andrew Lincoln back as this iconic character, and the new characters, Pearl Thorne (Lesley Ann-Brandt) and Okafor (Craig Tate) really put in some great acting. Okafor, specifically, leaves an impression for what looks like his only episode. You also have the great Terry O'Quinn appearing briefly as Major-General Beale.

There are numerous references to events in two of the other earlier spin-offs, 'Fear the Walking Dead' and 'Walking Dead: Worlds Beyond', with specific events in 'World's Beyond' being significant to the story, but it's summarized well enough that I don't think you necessarily have to watch that show to understand what's happening.

Also, I won't spoil it, but the ending was great.

I enjoyed the first episode, and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

Warning: Spoilers
As a devoted fan of The Walking Dead for quite some time, I've often felt like the show might be ending soon. However, with the announcement of spin-offs featuring characters like Negan, Maggie, and Daryl, it became evident that this was not an end but rather the dawn of something new-an expansive evolution of the universe we've come to love.

This episode was next level, the acting, the depth of emotion portrayed by each character, and the exploration of a broader world are simply unparalleled. It's a narrative shift that opens countless doors, offering a glimpse into the profound journey Rick Grimes undertook, the sacrifices he endured, and the unwavering strength of his character. His relentless determination to adapt and strategize with the hand he's been dealt is nothing short of amazing. Particularly intriguing was the moment he reunited with Michonne; the complexity of emotions flickering across his face left me eagerly anticipating the next episode. I was waiting for this show since episode on that bridge, I wanted to see Rick come back in season 10 or 11 of the main show but now I understand everything. Can't wait for more..

WOW!

Warning: Spoilers
It looks like TWD creators are going to hit on yet another spinoff. Dead City was Phenomenal, same with the Daryl Dixon show. And now The Ones Who Live starts out with one of the best episodes to come out of TWD Universe in years. It's also fine for people to watch it who may not have finished the main show, or watched the other spinoffs. They do a good job at summarizing the end of Rick's journey on the main show, from the events on the bridge all the way up to his new life with the CRM, a militarized group that has 1000s of people/soldiers as well as entire cities under it's control. The new characters are great. The dialogue was top notch. And, most importantly, we have our two fan favorites on screen again, FINALLY, after 4-5 years of waiting.

Would Rick Grimes Actually Do That?
MamadNobari9726 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So the episode starts with Rick cutting off his left hand and we're supposed to accept it's because he misses Michonne. I suppose the writers decided to do this to finally get their Rick to match the comic Rick. But a couple of questions come to mind.

First of all, you don't show your protagonist cutting off their hand in the beginning, even if it's a well-known character like Rick Grimes, or even if you do, you go back and show how he got to this point. We never get that in this episode. They only show how he got to the glass to the throat scene, which doesn't really work either. When a show or a movie does this, they at least show a flashback or a flashback montage of that character throughout the years and how he gradually reached this level that he would do such a thing.

The problem here is that they do none of that. Everything we see is from after the "5 Years Later" period and not before it. And we're supposed to think that Rick Grimes would do this?

The question that comes to mind is would the Rick we've known from The Walking Dead do this after all the things he's been through? He survived far worse things, he even survived a cannibalistic slaughterhouse. And now his whole plan of escaping this supposedly advanced military force is cutting off his hand and just running? That's it? He lost his hand to a two-sentence plan of "1 Cut hand off. 2 Run away."? Why does Scott M. Gimple always find the stupidest and the lamest ways for a character to lose their lives or limbs? Yeah, cutting your own hand is usually pretty badass, and the Assassin's Creed hand he gets is pretty cool too, but in the context of this show and the mediocre writing, it is the definition of lame.

Even Daryl enduring the Easy Street on repeat torture wouldn't do this to escape that hell he was in for months. But Rick Grime would do this to go back to Michonne?

Scott M. Gimple being the showrunner for this series gives me way less hope of this show actually being decent, but I can't say the entire episode was bad though because that would be ingenuine and not true. The episode is pretty entertaining and it's nice seeing some glimpses of old Rick here after all the years we've endured TWD without him. The visual effects are great too and I can see why this show was reported as having one of the network's highest budgets yet.

Now apart from the story structure which I didn't like, the dialogue is also really lame too and way too expository. This episode was the definition of tell don't show, and they expect us to care about the side characters because they tell some sad backstory of themselves. Not that telling your backstory is bad and they have to show a flashback for every minor character, but the way they do exposition here is just awful. I didn't care about any of the characters here and I certainly wouldn't've cared about Rick if I hadn't seen TWD before.

I couldn't tell if Okafor's actor was bad at acting, or if it was a miscast or the direction he was given was bad. Either way, his way of talking and acting was the goofiest and most overdramatic thing in this episode. It was like he was trying to impersonate Josh Brolin's voice. The scene of him telling his backstory and yelling had me giggling instead of the intended reaction the writer was looking for, because of how goofy he talked. Though I gotta say, even though I had a feeling he would not be a permanent character in this show, I did not expect him to go out like that. So the ending of the episode is pretty decent too.

Another thing is the dream sequences. I don't think the writer of this show has ever had a dream in his life or knows how dreams actually work. The way Rick is dreaming throughout this episode is like he's watching a new episode of a show every night, or he's pausing a movie and watching the rest time he's sleeping. I know that sometimes you can continue the same dream if you immediately go back to sleep, but these dream sequences here have the nature of flashbacks and not dreams. I think the writer mixed up the definition of flashbacks and dream sequences.

So regarding those dream sequences, they mention at the end of the episode that when Rick was a child his father set their farm ablaze and somehow got himself burned too, but he thought it was lighting at first and didn't know his dad did it so they could get a better farm and basically saved them with this act of arson. But instead of having this be the main focus of flashback and dream sequences, they decide it's better to have Rick and Michonne sit on a bench in the park and talk about pizzas and work? Really?

How impactful and great would it have been if they started the episode with the flashbacks (or dreams) of kid Rick being terrified of seeing their whole farm and house on fire, and gradually showed how much of an impact this fire had on his mind and maybe have the twist of the episode be the reveal that his fire was the one who started the fire and how this changed his whole world-view? But no, instead we get 10 minutes of mindless and pointless dream scenes of Rick and Michonne talking about things I've already forgotten about, and have this impactful event in Rick Grimes' life be this 1-minute exposition.

You see what I'm saying about the over-expository nature of dialogue in this episode?

It's also really weird that they don't really mention Judith Grimes until toward the end of the episode as if they forgot that Rick had a daughter and he only thinks and dreams and talks about Michonne.

Another thing I didn't like was how clean and digital the show looks. Which is funny because I used to think the original show looked way too grainy and dirty, and now I miss the way it used to look. New movies and shows look way too clean and crisp for their own good, especially something like a zombie show that would definitely benefit from film grain. It just looks way too clean and this kind of camera should be used for nature documentaries, not for The Walking Dead. It's like you're watching a highly-produced commercial, not a TV show.

It's also really funny how liberal they are with using the F-word when they made the actual show feel like a PG-13 movie with how scared they were to use the word in their gory zombie-killing show. These TV execs should be punished for these kinds of stupid decisions they made for the original show.

The ending is also really wack with how Michonne outright executes every other soldier but takes her time to unmask Rick and not kill him. How thoughtful of her. I was actually expecting this same thing to happen when Michonne, but I was hoping it wouldn't be this cliché and the writers wouldn't do this in 2024, but they did. I was saying under my breath "Ok, that's clearly Michonne, please don't kill everyone easily while they're masked and then unmask the plot-armored protagonist for no reason. Maybe Rick unmasks himself or it just falls off or something... Oh no, she actually unmasked him before killing him for no reason whatsoever."

It might seem I'm just complaining and went into this looking for things to complain about, but I was actually kinda excited to see Rick back and didn't even bother watching the other two spin-off shows, and was moderately disappointed with how this first episode turned out. I don't think it's the worst thing ever, and I'm actually giving it a good rating here, but it's ultimately meh, lackluster, and full of clichés.

Like I said, when the famous Scott M. Gimple who killed Carl Grimes for no reason is behind a project, my enthusiasm for that thing goes all the way down and I don't really have hope in this show's future episodes, especially after experiencing the mediocrity of the writing and the laughable dialogue of this first episode.

You can tell that Danai Gurira wrote it
curiousbush26 February 2024
Without getting into spoilers, I'll just say that it was evident to me throughout the episode that Danai Gurira was a lead writer. Lots of Rick being besides himself that he can't get to Michonne. For example, he's so besides himself that he's writing these dead-end letters to Michonne. This is something a woman might do (or perhaps Gurira thought it was cute) but it's not at all fitting with Rick's character. It gets worse - Rick impulsively, emotionally tries to flee some form of captivity. He does something so insanely dumb that I almost turned the episode off there and then. The episode opens with another, even worse moment of over-the-top emotional despair/masochism.

Basically, to summarize, the episode is written so that Rick is so shaken by the fact that he can't see Michonne that he becomes the complete antithesis of his TWD character.

Best Series Ever
cristianapostol-2231225 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Best Plot for the first episode, did not expect to see Michonne at the end of the episode 1. Can not wait to see the 2nd episode. Everything was so emotional, and I was expecting that it would take many episodes before they reunite, and the ending was the best surprise out of the first season. I appreciate that it came with an explanation for him missing for so many years, and not just that he didn't care about them anymore or that he found a better place. I can't wait for all the series to combine in order for him to reunite with Daryl too and see his kids. This series is the best series ever and hopefully they will all reunite in the end .

Andrew Lincoln deserves an Emmy.
fountasalexander26 February 2024
The Ones Who Live exceeded my expectations.

After half a decade, Andrew Lincoln is finally the main protagonist of TWD again.

His performance was absolutely sensational, he is a brilliant underrated actor.

The cinematography was beautiful, it didn't even feel like I was watching something apart of The Walking Dead Universe.

The dialogue and the story is done so well, making this episode EASILY the best premiere of TWD.

Almost granted me tears to my eyes watching this masterpiece of a return.

The Walking Dead is nothing without Rick, but he's finally back, and better than ever!

I can't wait for the rest of this series, thank you Andrew Lincoln for a breathtaking performance.

It was perfect

Warning: Spoilers
It was perfect right from the beginning to last minute details it was perfect i know that was Homelander's line but that what this is. They succeeded. They managed to restore that sensation to The Walking Dead. That unique feeling you had when first watching episodes is back. Andrew Lincoln did a fantastic job portraying the gradual spiral into insanity and acceptance. Special recognition should go to Thorne, who is amazing, and the Oakfor character, who deserved a second episode. I wasn't sure how the CRM tale would come across, but in just one episode, they succeeded in making me detest them. Positive indication. Possibly one of the best scenes in the episode is when Rick tells Oakfor about his father burning their land. The revelation at the end caught me off guard.

Well worth waiting for Years
ryanlim-7401326 February 2024
Waiting six long years for Rick Grimes' return has been anything but a waste of time. Andrew Lincoln's performance in the main series, the the emotional highs and lows, is beautifully dispersed throughout the episode. Originally planned as a trilogy movie, the story has been masterfully adapted into a six-part mini-series, managing to maintain the perfect balance of quality and pacing. The editing seamlessly weaves the narrative without overwhelming the viewer, offering just the right amount of scene transitions. Having rewatched this episode eight times, I'm astounded by the meticulous attention to detail in the script-every word counts. The production team at AMC, along with the cast involved in the direction, truly gifted fans with a long-awaited return of Rick Grimes, making the six-year wait feel like a tribute to our patience. The anticipation for the remaining five episodes is sky-high.

The Acting of The Shows Star Is incredible.

I never expected these things to happen. Great Start After So many Years. I thought it would be Normal start but it was Not!!

The Okafors sound and acting was great. Elizabeth(From TWD:Daryl Dixon)And Okafor are one of the best characters After years in this Universe.

Another thing is about The Starting of this Universe. They do it excellent. For The main show and for the All Spin-offs.

Rick is BACK!!
Rocket20225 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Finally, this is what we've been waiting for all this time, and they hit the mark! This episode reminded me of the early episodes of "The Walkimg Dead", when Michonne first showed up. The character of Nat is fantastic, and I wish he wasn't killed off in the first episode. Having Jadis back brought back memories of the trash dump, when she first appeared, way back when. I am hoping that they bring back other, well loved, characters like Morgan, or Daryl, and Judith. I wish this was going to be more than only 3 episodes. I don't think that is enough time to tell the story that includes everything that we have questions about. Also, I am not certain as to what the timeline is, as compared to when Michonne left Alexandria. I think this is just 3 years after she left, but how much time passed with "The Walking Dead" before they took over the Commonwealth community? Also, wasn't "The Walking Dead Universe" show a part of the same community that Rick is working with? Why wouldn't we have seen him when they were showing Jadis on that show?

"Years" is the premiere fans needed, a return to form with Andrew Lincoln bringing one of his best performances since 2017
Holt34427 February 2024
What is the grand premise of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live? It's about the love story between Rick and Michonne, who are changed by a world that is constantly changing, will they find themselves in a war against the living or will they discover that they too are The Walking Dead? The show does just that, showing where these two fan favorites ended up after leaving the main show, with Danai Gurira and Andrew Lincoln producing along with starring as the main characters Michonne and Rick Grimes respectively, with the former of them even writing an episode later on but for now it's worth noting how they helped with the story. The showrunner for The Ones Who Live are Scott M. Gimple who worked on The Walking Dead as showrunner from season 4 to 8, who also co-created The Walking Dead: World Beyond which is necessary (in a capacity) to understand this show because of the attention on CRM and seeing Pollyanna McIntosh returning as Jadis Stokes who are now a warrant officer. That's the returning cast, the supporting cast has a few new additions like; Terry O'Quinn as Beale: The Major General of the Civic Republic Military. Who was referenced in World Beyond. The other one is Lesley-Ann Brandt as Pearl Thorne. The former of them is known from Lost and the latter of them are from Lucifer and Spartacus. Two additions I was stoked for and they didn't disappoint, I really liked Craig Tate as Donald Okafor as well.

The episode's premise: Five years have passed since Rick's disappearance. In another world, built on a war against the dead, Rick Grimes and Michonne attempt to find each other and who they were.

This week's episode of TWD: The Ones Who Live "Years" was directed by Bert & Bertie and written by Scott M. Gimple, the direction and visual storytelling were excellent, and the writing was actually-surprisingly quite great. Gimple shows he can write compelling drama and dialogue, after his last two seasons of TWD along with World Beyond showing the opposite of great writing. I really liked the writing and story! First words out of the way, I'm so glad Andrew Lincoln came back for this and it feels like he's even happier being back. Working in another country and not seeing your kids takes a toll on everyone, I'm sure. He's bringing this new energy to the role of Rick Grimes and what's interesting is how this episode contains some highlights of the role in terms of acting. Andrew Lincoln never got any big recognition from the big awards except for winning the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in 2015 and 2017. I think this show might contain the same level of acting like those years. Andrew Lincoln shows different emotions but the strongest acting he does is the suicidal thoughts and hopefulness. It's such a strong and superb performance which opens the show perfectly. The episode follows solely Rick Grimes but it gives us answers to questions we've had since his final episode and the reference from World Beyond of him. About references, Gimple succeeded in tying up every show (TWD, Fear and World Beyond) throughout the episode with lines of dialogue but also visually.

The production design and art direction is terrific, so is the mise-en-scene and cinematography for the show. What I quickly noticed from the episode and the trailer before, the budget have grown larger which adds to better production design and visual effects, overall making a better show. The episode/show looks incredible, one thing I found lacking was the digital camera but that's something which was changed for the eleventh (final) season of The Walking Dead, it doesn't bring the same feeling. But that's not a criticism, the thing is how I can't find anything to criticize, it's flawless and brilliantly executed both behind and on the screen. There's probably something I missed, but I loved it.

Last words, if you're a big fan of the show then this show is right for you and keep in mind you don't have to watch World Beyond nor Fear TWD, solely The Walking Dead to understand these characters intentions and motivations. My guess is that having Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira as executive producers helped keep the quality and characters consistent. "Years" was a phenomenal premiere and I can't wait for the next episode!

Doesn't have original walking dead gritty look
syed-0050028 February 2024
This was enjoyable, we finally see Rick but the issue is this Rick does not behave like the one we know. This guy is soft and talks too much. He does a thing that seemed kind of unnecessary but I get that they wanted to show how desperate he was.

The most strange thing is the love story. In all the yrs of walking dead they never showed Rick michone love story there has never been such deep love that he would do anything to get back to her. Instead if they showed that he was desperate to get back to his daughter and michone then that would make sense. A father's love is far greater than a love for a gf or wife. Of course he wanted to get back to them both but he repeated said my wife my wife but hardly ever mentioned his daughter.

The cinematography doesn't have that gritty wd look. Everything seemed to moving too fast.

But overall I enjoyed it and would want to watch the reset of the show.

It was always going to be hard to wash the bitter taste out of our mouths from the travesty of the last few seasons of the main series and the similar downward spiral into abomination of the spinoffs, especially fear, and the one with the kids in it that no one watched. I'll leave judgement on Daryl's one cos he makes even terrible seem ok when he's on screen.

This show was, nothing special.

It didn't really make sense or add up. Why is this island of survival an unstoppable force? Why in the madness of the walking dead world can't he slip away, why would they bother chasing him down and killing him and everyone he knows? The world is Chaos, and yet they're in complete control, over one of the most resourceful badA$$es in what's left of the world.

They're a completely secret no one knows about them hidden city, yet they've got broadcast tv channels as denoted by the static laced transmission, great way to hide yourself. They got Helicopters flying in and out but no one can trace those helicopters back to where they're coming from? They're keeping Rick on a leash and not letting him leave because they need to protect the secret location while anyone with a a bit of tech or lets face it, binoculars could track down the location.

Nope. No convinced. It just doesn't add up. Even in the modern world with all our infra structure at full strength people can still evade the system, but apparently resourceful smart Rick can't 1 get out of the building and 2 vanish back to his people and the secret city good people, they actually care what he does or doesn't do. Gimple hasn't thought this through but that's the case with most of the series. It's science fiction that with just a tiny bit of thought falls to pieces.

The Okafor character seemed interesting, but we'll never find out what his vision was.

I don't think this series is going anywhere interesting. Shouldn't have bothered looking in. And it's 5 years too late. Can't see the time and money on screen at all.

Years Gone Bye

Warning: Spoilers
After over 5 long years, the return of Rick Grimes is finally here. And I'm glad to say that so far it's off to a great start.

I've been watching TWD for nearly a decade now, and as a fan I'm just happy that we can still celebrate this universe with 2 of its best characters after all this time. But unlike the other spin-offs, this show has the real stakes and has much more pressure on it to deliver. And in the opening episode there was 0 time wasted.

It's very impressive how grand they made the CRM feel in this small sample size, making them feel larger than life from the jump. And I think a large part of that is the fact that Rick tried multiple times to escape but always failed and had no out, so he was trapped in this world with no choice of his own in regards to being there.

And a decision that was excellent to start off this series was making Rick's desperation apparent to the audience, and having Rick chop off his own hand in the opening minutes is exactly how you show that eagerness. And the fact that he STILL didn't get away shows the viewers how much Rick is really drowning in this pit with no way out.

I also want to take a moment to applaud Craig Tate's performance as Okafor in this episode. I'm honestly a little sad that his character arc ends with this episode considering how great his performance was, and I think a lot of the great that comes from TWD is getting believable characters who can be portrayed well. Especially considering the fact that we're in the spin-off era and getting new characters that can stand on their own two legs is a necessity, and a new character that really fit the bill getting written off that quickly is underwhelming for me. But I can't really complain about it yet without knowing where it goes first.

Also, the Terry O'Quinn casting was EXCELLENT. The moment I saw it I was really excited, and even though we haven't seen much of him yet, I'm looking forward to potentially getting more.

In terms of the final moments of this episode, it was hard to see Rick eventually let go and try to move forward with the CRM. Writing his last note to Michonne that she'd never see, burning the notes and the phones, and officially give in. But considering how long it's been and how much he's tried, it's makes sense that he'd give in because he's only human.

But above all the final scene of the episode is what threw me off the most as I didn't see it coming from miles away. I was positive that it would come much later in the season, and I thought there was even a chance it'd be held off for season 2. But in terms of the execution, I'm not really a fan of how they used Michonne and Rick's reunion as a cliffhanger in the very first episode. Considering how powerful of a moment that's supposed to be, it's like the 5 year build up was being paid off in episode 1 but yanked away just to reel you in next week. I simply think that moment should've been treated with more care and given more room to breathe instead of it being cut off so you could tune in next week, when in reality you really don't need a cliff hanger like that to get people to watch.

But in conclusion I'm really glad that we've finally reached this point, and that the first episode delivered and showed a bright future not only for this series, but this entire universe. It's only 1 episode, but with Danai and Andy working closely on this show along with Scott Gimple, I have hope that this show will work in the long run.

When Rick's final episode in 2018 came to a close and the trilogy of Rick movies was announced, I can't remember being more excited for this universe than I was then. But after Covid sadly that dream went to die, and I honestly I think it was for the best since that gives more time for this story to flesh out in an episodic format, and potentially build to a grand final season of TWD with all of the characters coming to a head.
