A welcome return to Shetland
Tweekums19 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
These comments are based on the whole first story on just the second episode.

After an introductory story last year 'Shetland' returns for a second series; this time we will be getting three two part stories. This, the first, opens with two girls leaving a party on a beach and heading to the house of a local recluse Magnus Bain. The next day one of the girls is found dead on the beach and suspicion quickly falls on Bain. This isn't the first time the police have taken an interest in him; he was also a suspect when a young girl went missing nineteen years previously. It isn't long before a second suspect emerges; one of dead girl's teachers has been less than honest about his relationship with her. Suspicion swings back to Bain though when the body of a young girl is found in a peat bog. As the second episode continues the discovery of the dead girls school project leads to further suspects and motives and ultimately to a surprising arrest.

This episode proves to be a solid introduction to the second series; the mystery had a suitable number of possible suspects and ultimately a plausible but surprising killer. The regular cast continue to do a fine job but it is guest star Brian Cox who really shines as Magnus Bain. The other main star is of course Shetland itself; the series nicely captures the atmosphere; especially when the fog settles giving a bleak and lonely feeling. I do however feel that the scenes in Lerwick are shot in a way that deliberately makes the Island capital look much smaller than it really is! Overall this was a satisfying story which left me looking forward to the next two instalments.

Excellent whodunit, with a fine contribution by Brian Cox.

Moody and scenic, Raven Black is an excellent 2-parter about a murder of a bright teen girl. Sr. Officer Perez asks the right questions. He catches one of the girl's teachers in a fib. Then, the team finds a cell phone with a key piece of video. Awesome. Persistence pays. Best 2-parter in this series I have seen yet.

Everybody Let's Do The Twist !

WARNING - CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILER

Another excellent two part who done it. With a startling twist!

They had me all the way through to the shot where we see the knife is missing from the table, suddenly DI Perez enters the room and says "Step away from her." Then we notice that Alan Isbister doesn't have a knife in his hand. Meanwhile Sally has one hand tucked behind her back. Wow!

Rebecca Benson does a yeoman's job as the totally believable Sally Henry. Another brilliant characterization was Brian Cox's portrayal of Magnus Bain.

FINALLY we have an example of the deft screenwriting that is missing from a majority of crime dramas as we learn Jimmy's backstory without having to sit through an agonizingly long dialogue scene that interrupts the flow of the story.

I'm SO glad I didn't listen to the naysayers and chose to watch this series.

I really enjoy this series. I love the accents of the actors.
The scenery alone was enough to get my initial interest. I immediately found the characters and the plots very believable. I also had the thought; how difficult could it be to find a murderer in such a sparsely populated area? Just round up all the residents. I was a bit surprised by the standard use of CCTV in the area, here in the US I don't think that would fly. But as depicted in the show, it is a useful tool in solving crimes. Now to my question about Raven Black Part 2... I'm not sure if the dialogue at the end show was in English. I could not understand what Bain and Perez said to each other as they parted ways and Perez left Bains home. Will someone please help me?
