“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” the surprise hit off the “Encanto” soundtrack, has gone where even “Let It Go” couldn’t: It’s become the first song from a Disney movie to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” did it in 1993.
It joins the “Encanto” album itself as a chart-topper, as the animated film’s soundtrack remains atop the Billboard 200 chart for the third time in the last four weeks.
Some other stats Billboard points out: “Bruno,” solely penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda, becomes the first Hot 100 chart-topper to have been written by a solo writer in more than four years, Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” having been the last. It’s the first time a Miranda tune has topped the chart. And it’s only the second time a Disney song has reached the top, since “A Whole New World” was the...

"We Don't Talk About Bruno" is going to miss its shot for best song—but let Lin-Manuel Miranda tell you why! On Dec. 21, the shortlist for the 2022 Oscars' Best Original Song category dropped, and though one of Miranda's songs from the animated Disney hit Encanto made the list, it wasn't the track fans were expecting. The emotional Spanish-language song "Dos Oruguitas" was named as a potential contender for this year's award show over the seen-everywhere-on-TikTok anthem "We Don't Talk About Bruno," which has surpassed Frozen's megahit "Let It Go" on the charts. So, why submit "Dos Oruguitas" over "We...

While Disney chose to submit “Dos Oruguitas” to the Oscars as its representative song from “Encanto,” it is “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” that, ironically, has everyone talking. The earworm has been heard everywhere from TikTok to YouTube covers, hitting No. 1 on the Spotify streaming chart and peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing the other ubiquitous Disney song of the past decade, “Let It Go” from 2013’s “Frozen.” It’s possible that Disney is doubting its decision to push “Dos Oruguitas” instead, but the unexpected success of “Bruno” could end up rising all tides for “Encanto” at the Oscars.
Disney could not have predicted the success of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” — the song and film were released three weeks after the submission deadline — so it can hardly be blamed for going with the more emotional ballad, the kind of song that has won Disney multiple Oscars in the past.

“Let It Go” has been a popular musical hit since first making its debut in Disney’s 2013 blockbuster “Frozen”. However, there’s a new kid on the block that’s stolen the thunder of “Let It Go”: “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, from new animated Disney film “Encanto”. As Entertainment Weekly reports, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”...

'We Don't Talk About Bruno' Surpasses 'Let It Go' To Become Biggest Disney Song In A Quarter Century
According to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, we will never stop talking about Bruno. On one hand, it's comforting to know that "We Don't Talk About Bruno," the song endlessly thrumming through my brain, is haunting everyone else too ... but this also means we'll never escape Lin Manuel Miranda's musical clutches, doesn't it?
The breakout track from Disney's "Encanto" is taking the world by storm like the masterfully crafted earworm that it is. But living rent-free in our brains isn't enough for "We Don't Talk About Bruno," whose catchy tune is now going for big...

The soundtrack for Disney’s animated film “Encanto,” featuring songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, leaps up to number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the tracking week of December 31 through January 6, the first week since Christmas collections flooded the chart (all Christmas albums have now fallen off). It’s a rare feat these days for a movie soundtrack to hit number-one. Could it be good news for Miranda’s Oscar chances for Best Original Song? Round up the usual suspects. The insular Academy music branch is known for leaning into their regulars (see 12-time nominee Diane Warren’s shortlisted song for Sundance indie “Four Good Days”) as well as unexpected surprises (Amazon’s shortlisted Idina Menzel song “Dream Girl” from “Cinderella”). Needless to say, Menzel has been to the Oscars before, belting out “Let It Go,” Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez’ Oscar winner from “Frozen.”
The Academy music branch also tends to fall for global pop stars who might turn up to perform at the Oscar kudocast. Inevitably, music stars scored shortlist slots, including for the second year in a row H.E.R., who sings “Automatic Woman” in Halle Berry’s directorial debut “Bruised” (Netflix). Another Netflix contender is Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi’s “Just Look Up” from “Don’t Look Up.” Ireland’s two-time song nominees Bono and U2 wrote and performed “Your Song Saved...

Robert Lopez is not only an Egot winner, but he’s also the youngest to reach it (at 39 years and 8 days old) and is the first to achieve a double Egot, having won each accolade twice. But there are some who feel his Egot ought to be asterisked because his two Emmys are Daytime Emmys, but Lopez can now shut those haters up in one fell swoop with double Primetime Emmy wins this year.
Shared with his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Lopez nabbed two nominations for “WandaVision”: music and lyrics for “Agatha All Along” and main title theme music. These are his fourth and fifth Primetime Emmy bids; he previously lost the songwriting category for “Scrubs” in 2007, and “The Comedians” and the Oscars, both in 2015.

Update, with Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs nominations No one’s saying it will be easy, but Hamilton actors Renée Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom Jr. and Daveed Diggs, along with WandaVision songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez, each came a little closer today to the rarified Egot status with their respective Emmy Award nominations.

One summer ago, when the nation was fatigued from endless new cycles and in the thick of a deadly pandemic, a little comedy called “Ted Lasso” dropped on the AppleTV+ platform with a fairly normal debut series trajectory. And then the deafening buzz began when comfort-seekers latched onto mustachioed soccer coach Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and his unfazed, majestically optimistic outlook on life and work, even carving a portion of his day to impose whimsical wisdoms to his scrappy English team and also make delicious biscuits to win over his furtive new employer, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham).

A viral moment forever stamped into my mind is DJ Khaled’s 2015 Jet Ski incident. While Glenn Close has taken up a lot of the conversation surrounding overdue Oscars in recent years, another perennial bridesmaid is hoping to finally win an Oscar of her own. Songwriter Diane Warren is once again nominated for Best Original Song, for “Io Si (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead,” sharing writing credit with the song’s vocalist, Laura Pausini. Warren has now racked up a whopping 12 nominations but has yet to actually take home the little gold man, even while finding success at other awards shows like the Grammys and the Emmys. She won a Golden Globe last month for “Io Si,” which might just put her on the path to winning the Oscar once and for all.

Covid-19 has done a number on the entertainment industry with countless event cancellations and postponements, leading to the unusual situation we find ourselves in at the Grammys. Billie Eilish could win for the James Bond theme song “No Time to Die” — seven months before that movie’s actual release.
Eilish released “No Time to Die” as a single on February 13, 2020, back when the film was expected to open that spring. But as the result of pandemic lockdowns, the film was pushed back to the fall, and the accompanying music video for the song premiered on October 1, 2020. Alas, the film still didn’t open in theaters. Now it’s scheduled for October 8, 2021, 21 months after the release of the song, 12 months after the release of the music video, and seven months after the song competes at the Grammys.

Janelle Monae has made successful ventures into acting with the films “Moonlight” and “Hidden Figures” as well as the Amazon series “Homecoming.” But she’s still probably best known for her work as a singer-songwriter. So it’s ironic that she could win her first Oscar this year while the Grammys keep giving her the cold shoulder.
Monae made the Oscars shortlist for co-writing the original song “Turntables” (watch the video above) with George A. If you watched the first three episodes of the Disney+ series “WandaVision,” then you probably have the theme songs stuck in your head. That makes sense because said songs were created by Disney’s earworm aficionados, the Oscar-winning lyricists/husband and wife songwriting team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez. The musical mavens behind the likes of “Let It Go” and “Remember Me” had the task of giving “WandaVision” it’s era-specific throwback songs and setting the tone for the unique series to come.
“The decades themselves were the biggest style influences,” Anderson-Lopez told IndieWire. “It was really important to everyone, from the top down, to make sure that we didn’t do specific parodies of any one song or any one show, but that they were evocative of many shows.” So, if you’re like us, and felt the pilot theme felt like a mash-up of “The Donna Reed Show” meets “Patty Duke,...

Of course with everyone glued to the nostalgia emanating from what is sure to be a new family tradition—Disney+—you might be wondering what holiday gems are hidden in its streaming bag of goodies. Well, we’re here to answer that question and offer you a recommendation on the best holiday cheer to be had in the Mouse House.

AppleTV+’s hilarious and often endearing new comedy might be called “Ted Lasso,” but, beware: its best scenes are often stolen by the show’s most intriguing, devious, snarky, diabolical, hilarious and even beloved characters: Rebecca Welton. The elegant and wickedly brilliant Hannah Waddingham imbues her character with an artful flair for drama, highlighting her musical theatre background in a number of both small and show-stopping moments on screen.
The show’s premise originated in 2013 as a promotional commercial for NBC Sports when Jason Sudeikis introduced the titular Ted Lasso, an American football coach who is now hired, quite strangely, to lead a British soccer team. Why? Just because both sports are called “football”? Sure, Lasso is a laughable choice, but he also sports an inspiring, heartwarming camaraderie that Ms. Welton often tries to muck up.
It turns out that she had a secret reason for hiring such an unqualified goofball.

Queer Christmas rom-com Happiest Season helped to breathe some needed new life into the Aussie box office over the weekend, though most exhibitors continue to eagerly hang out for end-of-year releases Wonder Woman 1984 and The Dry.
Directed by Clea DuVall, Happiest Season follows Abby (Kristen Stewart), who plans to propose to girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) over Christmas with her family. Little does Abby realise, Harper is not out to her parents.
The Sony title, which also stars Alison Brie, Dan Levy and Audrey Plaza, opened at number one, collecting $553,424 from 247 screens.
Close behind was WB’s Tenet, which despite being its 14th frame, continues to have life thanks to Victorian cinemagoers. The Christopher Nolan film notched $529,279 from 145 screens, 3 per cent up on last week. Overall, the thriller now sits north of $10.3 million.

In March, when much of the country entered lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the makers of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” faced a dilemma. The 10-episode sitcom, about a Kansas City football coach (Jason Sudeikis) hired to lead a Premier League soccer team in England, had completed all of the principal photography, plus all of the post-production on the pilot episode. That left nine episodes to go in order to make Apple’s August debut date.

We know you’ve watched the video for “Let It Go” from “Frozen” a million times, and in it you’ve seen Elsa quickly materializing a snowman that would become Olaf. What we don’t see is immediately after that, and this new clip for the short film “Once Upon a Snowman” gives an origin story for everyone’s favorite hug-loving snowman.
“Once Upon a Snowman” is a short film that’s spunoff from “Frozen” starring Josh Gad that begins just as he wakes up after Elsa sings her iconic anthem. This clip shows that her cape effortlessly floating off into the distance actually collides with Olaf and sends him tumbling down a snowy cliff. And now he’s having an instant existential crisis.
“I’m alive! Who said that? I said that,” Olaf says in the clip. “I appear to be some sort of snowman. How absurd, how is it that even possible?...

There’s a lovely, original story happening at the edges of “Over the Moon” — literally, the first 20 minutes and the last five — but you can feel the studio notes taking over this musical-comedy-adventure from director Glen Keane, a Disney vet and the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind the short “Dear Basketball.”
The opening sequences are lovely, with our heroine Fei Fei (voiced by Cathy Ang) enraptured as a young girl by her mother’s stories of moon goddess Chang’e and her sadness over her earthbound true love Houyi. Fei Fei’s beloved mom, whose bakery makes the town’s most delicious mooncakes, passes away after falling ill.
A few years later, Fei Fei’s dad (John Cho) plans to marry again, which makes Fei Fei upset. The scientifically-minded teen decides to travel to the moon so she can prove that Chang’e is real, as a way to remind Fei Fei...

TV provided a lot of memorable musical moments this year.
Some were amazing, and some were very disturbing.
Plus a few classics were dusted off and found new life during these dark times.
1. "Wonderwall"/"Bad Romance"/"Let It Go" - Ted Lasso
Just when you thought Afc Richmond football couldn't score any higher in the adorable and endearing categories, they went to a karaoke bar on Ted Lasso Season 1 Episode 7.
Sam's rendition of "Wonderwall" was heartfelt. Coach Beard's performance of "Bad Romance" would make Lady Gaga proud. Then Rebecca brought down the house with "Let It Go."
The only thing more entertaining than the singers were the reactions of the usually gruff Roy Kent and a shirtless Dani Rojas.
2. "I Want to be Evil"/"Someone to Watch Over Me - Lucifer
Compared to Lucifer Season 4, the first half of Lucifer Season 5 didn't feature the cast showing off their vocals as often.

For many Elsa fans, it’s the highlight of Frozen 2. Inside of Ahtohallan, a river of memories that’s been frozen into a glacier of ice, Queen Elsa of Arendelle finally confronts the truth about her past, her family’s history, and her own soul. And she does it all while singing an empowering anthem. Yet even with Idina Menzel’s highest of high notes, the song is unlike “Let It Go” due to a melancholic undertone about Elsa facing the ghosts of her family’s legacy and accepting her full identity.
The scene is preferred by many over the more straight-forward attempt to recapture “Let It Go,” aka “Into the Unknown,” including apparently Menzel herself, who previously hinted she would’ve liked to see Disney campaign “Show Yourself” for Best Song at the Oscars. It didn’t work out that way, but then as we now know the...

Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have a unique collaborative process when it comes to songwriting. As they’re wont to joke, they were working out of their apartment in Brooklyn, and over telecommuting services, before it was cool—or necessary due to the coronavirus pandemic. But as they reflected on the global phenomenon that was Frozen 2 a half-year later in a Zoom press conference, and ahead of a new documentary series about the movie set to premiere on Disney+, they revealed even they’re desperate for things to return to normal… so much so Kristen Anderson-Lopez joked about being desperate enough to work on “Frozen 3.”

Multi-platinum singer-songwriter and actor Jesse McCartney was just shy of taking home the Golden Mask trophy on Wednesday’s finale of “The Masked Singer.” As the Turtle, he placed second behind the Night Angel (Kandi Burruss) but edged out the Frog (Bow Wow), who placed third. Panelists Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger both correctly guessed his identity but Robin Thicke thought the Turtle was singer Adam Lambert while Ken Jeong was certain it was newlywed Nick Jonas. Disney’s Frozen has become Broadway’s first long-running casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic and industrywide shutdown. The production, which opened March 22, 2018, at the St. James Theatre, announced today that it will not return when Broadway reopens — whenever that might be.
In the closure announcement, producers said the musical will not re-open “as a result of the industry-wide shutdown and resulting economic fallout.” The production’s final performance was Wednesday March 11, having played 825 performances and 26 previews.
“In the summer of 2013 when Frozen began its road to Broadway,” said Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer Disney Theatrical Productions, “two things were unimaginable: that we’d soon have five productions worldwide, and a global pandemic would so alter the world economy that running three Disney shows on Broadway would become untenable.

Talk about a trunk show. Katy Perry and her dog Nugget went full pachyderm to deliver a powerful performance of the classic lullaby “Baby Mine” during Sunday’s “The Disney Family Singalong: Volume II.”
The 13-time Grammy-nominated pop star and her poodle dressed in matching elephant costumes to deliver the song from “Dumbo” — first performed by Betty Noyes in the 1941 animated film as Mrs. Jumbo cradled the title character in her trunk while locked up in a circus wagon.

Disney movies have produced some classic songs over the years — and just over a dozen have won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
“When You Wish Upon a Star” — “Pinocchio” (1940)
The first song from a Disney movie to win Oscar glory is Jiminy Cricket’s ballad from “Pinocchio,” sung by Cliff Edwards.
“Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” — “Song of the South” (1947)
Allie Wrubel and lyricist Ray Gilbert’s song, based on a pre-Civil War folk song, is a catchy ditty in a film that has not been screened in decades due to its depiction of African American characters like Uncle Remus.
“Chim Chim Cher-ee” — “Mary Poppins” (1964)
Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews’ duet, written by the brotherly duo of Richard and Robert Sherman, continues to charm.
“Under the Sea” — “The Little Mermaid” (1987)

The Turtle is the frontrunner to win season 3 of “The Masked Singer.” He is one of the strongest contenders in the quarterfinal on May 6.
