I think she was meant to be a bad actress
fortnight_kmcmillen5 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
No ghost, most the actors were decent. I think the psychic was meant to be bad. Decent twist, I'll give it that. Didn't see it coming. Boring as all get out till like the last 15 min to half hour.

Incredible

How can you make a movie about the paranormal without anything paranormal taking place? It just boggles my mind. The only reason I am giving this movie 3 stars is because Joni is really cute.

Wow...

Warning: Spoilers
Erin B. Ryan's performance as Tabitha, the Craig's List psychic, has to be the worst, most over-the-top, hammiest turn that I've ever seen in any movie of any kind. To e fair, no one in this movie can act at all, but Ms. Ryan's performance far, far outstrips anyone else's in the cast, in terms of pure turd-like putrescence. She is SO bad that you have to wonder if she's trying to be horribly funny, perhaps lampooning psychic mediums. She isn't. She's just an awful, awful actress. Then again, no one that appears in this movie is a threat to win an Oscar.

The premise is that an on-line reality "star" and her husband, are filming an episode of her paranormal investigation show at some dump called "The Devil's Commune". Accompanying the husband and wife are the wife's best friend, who knows the history behind the supposedly haunted site, and a cameraman. The cameraman, Ford, is almost as bad as Tabitha, the Craig's List psychic. Ford is the requisite a-hole in the movie... the obnoxious, whiny, cowardly jerk who believes that he is charming, witty, and absolutely hilarious, but who isn't even remotely close to any of those things.

This movie is SO bad that you will want to find each and every member of the cast and crew, and work them over mercilessly with a baseball bat. None of these imbeciles should ever work on, or appear in, another movie... EVER. The positive reviews for this rancid bowel movement of a film has to come from people connected to it. I am not even remotely kidding when I say that no one in this movie can act to save their lives. At one point in the movie, when Tabitha performs some bizarre psychic medium strip tease belly dance so that she can "communicate with the spirits", you have to wonder if the director is purposely trying to tank the movie. This is the type of movie that is so bad that you'll want everyone to die in the most horrible way imaginable before it's over... most particularly Ford, who spends most of the movie hitting on the wife's best friend. Ford is a complete cretin, and that's being kind.

Do yourself a favor and leave this one "alone in the ghost house".

Move along...
fragglejan1115 January 2022
Nothing to see here... Literally nothing. No ghosts, no demons, no things that go bump in the night... NOTHING! 4 people enter a house, with a " psychic" then nothing happens, the psychic leaves, and then... Nothing happens. They go to sleep, and something stupid happens that is not worth an hour and a half of your time to see. Like I said... Move along, nothing to see here.

Yikes.

Worth watching only for the hilariously over the top performance from the "psychic". 15 minutes of unintentional comedy gold buried in the middle of a real stinker of a movie.

Couple of Marginally Pretty Girls ... That's It!
troytheisen5 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
SMALL SPOILER: The title, itself, is incorrect. There are no ghosts in this house. It's not even haunted. Why would they choose such a misleading title?

I know why ...

To get you to watch it. That's why.

If the title had even the very-slightest remote similarity to the story, no one would bother. This "waste of time" has been done a thousand times and a thousand times better. The acting is marginal by all but the "pyschic." And that person needs to go back to acting school ... or just give it up altogether. I've seen better acting by inaminate objects.

Look, I am always searching for an exceptional Indie flick that seeped through the cracks, barely noticed. But this one was NOT one of those. Honestly, I don't know what this was. It certainly wasn't a movie. Maybe there isn't a word in the English language that could be used as proper nomenclature.

Worthwhile found footage horror outing
Woodyanders27 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Reality TV show star Lana (well played with infectiously bubbly aplomb by Joni Durian), her husband Anthony (likable John Bradley Hambrick), and several others decide to spend the night in the legendary haunted abode The Devil's Commune. Naturally, the group get a lot more than they bargained for.

Director Henrique Couto takes full advantage of the found footage premise, keeps the engrossing story moving along at a zippy pace, takes time to develop the characters so that the viewer truly cares about what happens to them, and even tosses in a little gratuitous T&A for good tasty'n'trashy measure. The clever script by Couto and John Oak Dalton not only pokes witty fun at the contrived nature of reality television programs, but also comes through with a real chilling doozy of a surprise grim ending. The sound acting from the able cast keeps this picture humming: Iabou Windimore makes a favorable impression as spunky artist Sophie, Erin P. Ryan really sinks her teeth into her juicy role as flaky medium Tabitha, and Couto himself acquits himself nicely as amiable wisecracking cameraman Ford. The deliberately rough cinematography adds an invigorating sense of raw immediacy and authenticity. A neat little fright flick.

Great addition to found footage movies!
nealcj19845 June 2015
Normally I'm not a big fan of found footage movies as they can be very predictable. I was very pleased to find this movie NOT predictable! I enjoyed seeing various types of cameras used as well as seeing the footage itself vary between type of camera. Some found footage movies suffer from having different cameras yet they all look exactly the same.

Another enjoyable item was not seeing the cameraman, Ford, for a big chunk of time. We knew who he was, he interacted with the other characters, but was never seen until about 15 minutes into the film and it was mainly on accident. After that the viewer began to see him more often but it was nice to have that extra mystery.

The only problem I had with the film is that there were a few opportunities where a small change could have made the scene from a great scene to a fantastic scene. I don't want to go into details as to not spoil anything, but one involves the timing of a practical joke that could have been moved up to get the most jump from the viewer. As the joke was laid out in the film it worked great for the scene and got the desired effect! One thing that was impressive was how each of the character was fleshed out in ways that aren't shoved down the viewer's throat. Main example is we get a very small snippet of Ford on the phone that completely shifts how you can perceive his character, and the scene itself wasn't important to the plot and could even be viewed as an unimportant scene, yet it worked perfectly for what we knew about Ford.

The acting itself was great as usual with most of director Couto's films. Erin R Ryan did a great job in her role as an eccentric medium. Joni Durian was able to capture the essence of documentarians with a wide-eyed look that pushes extra emphasis to key words.
