Introducing Professor Jasper Teerlinck
Tweekums18 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This, the first episode of the series, opens with a female college student being ambushed in the toilets by a masked man who drags her into one of the stalls and rapes her. Annelies Donckers, the police officer investigating the case, notices similarities to the rape of a friend when she was at college ten years previously. Making little progress she decides to enlist the help of one of her old lecturers; Professor Jasper Teerlinck. Teerlinck is a rather strange Professor in Criminology; he is obsessed with cleanliness and has personal skills that make Saga Norén from 'The Bridge' look like Miss Sensitivity! He manages to offend a senior police, students and the rape victim and to relax he goes onto the roof and admires the view while imagining himself singing. Before he inevitably helps solve the case he manages to get himself arrested.

On the strength of this opening episode I'd say that this series will be well worth watching. In his introduction Walter Iuzzolino, of 'Walter Presents' said 'First you'll hate him, then you'll want to kill him, then you'll love him'… he wasn't wrong. Koen De Bouw does a brilliant job as the eponymous professor; he makes the character cringe-making and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time. These laughs are all fairly unforced as one is laughing at just how offensive he is or the bizarreness of what he does. While he dominates proceedings Ella Leyers also impresses as Donckers, a far more normal character. The rest of the cast are pretty good too. The nature of the crime may make this disturbing for some viewers although we see nothing that can be considered overly salacious. Overall I really enjoyed this opening episode and look forward to seeing more of Professor T.

A great opener

A quirky comedy detective drama is hard to believe. His even harder to believe it's from Belgium. Characters you can laugh at and start to show some empathy. A great watch and the reveal of the murderer keeps you guessing. No wonder hey are doing a British version. Great scripts and humour.

Mixed Bag

Warning: Spoilers
I started watching this because the English cover version received many deleterious reviews. The claim was this version ("the original") was much better. Well, based upon this one episode, the English version must be terrible indeed.

As the title suggests, I found this episode to be a mixed bag. There were several moments when I laughed out loud. But there were also moments I felt so angry I longed to reach through the screen and strangle either the actors or the writer, depending upon the scene.

For example: How is it that a female is savvy enough to have pepper spray on hand in case of an emergency. AND YET too stupid to have a baseball bat, crowbar or some other device to finish off the person she has pepper sprayed? At that moment, I rooted for the rapist. DON'T PRETEND TO BE SMART. Either do what's necessary or get the f-ck out of Dodge.

Likewise, these 2 young idiots who recruit the professor. Do I really want to listen to their stupid nonsense? Both the female and male leads need to be slapped HARD. I mean hard enough that both their faces are still red the next day. I'm SO tired of watching incompetent melanin-disabled people skating on the thin ice of self-indulgence.

There were enough good moments to make this episode worthwhile viewing. But I'm REALLY not interested in watching any more self-indulgence. BTW: There was one time I was REALLY on the Professor's side. I was pleased when he calmly pointed out the female witness was obstructing justice by unnecessarily ego-tripping.

"So long as she feels sorry for herself, she won't let us explore her memories." That was a GREAT moment in this episode and revealed a LOT. As it turns out, in the real world there are people who would rather ego-trip than catch a killer or a rapist. IOW: Oftentimes, the "victim" is just as culpable of the crime as is the perpetrator.

So this series has some chops. Let's see where it goes from here.
