A severely underrated episode
ajkithefirst19 December 2020
This episode was well written but was especially carried by its performances. Specifically Ed O'Neil and Jesse Tyler Ferguson had some great moments.

This show doesn't always have the greatest writing or concepts but the actors always show up especially your constant Emmy nominated foursome.

Clean Out Your Junk Drawer - S07E08
rgan16 December 2018
In another partial bottle episode, the show creates another masterful storyline of humour and emotion with the adults participating in a couples therapy session in the Dunphy house while Haley and Alex get some much needed time with each other as they discuss their own personal problems, both storylines bringing out big laughs and some very intriguing progressions for some of the characters. Part of Modern Family's strength is its masterful use of guest stars, opting for credible actors rather than just famous faces, and it's here where Catherine O'Hara shines as the therapist conducting the session, her rapport with O'Neill's Jay perfectly timed, while Ferguson also excels here as Mitch breaks down in a rare outlandish performance from him. Once again, the show works better when it strips back and allows the characters to breath, and "Clean Out Your Junk Drawer" is another fantastically crafted episode that keeps the show a worthwhile watch.

Smash, smash, sma-ASH!

Warning: Spoilers
Adding a review in case Jacobien was me eight years ago as well as right now. Currently trying to track down the lines Jay read from the "book" as inspiration for my vows.

Absolutely brilliant writing & acting, I feel like this is where I remember the last seasons of this show turning into a classic - something with the decision-making and timing/cast knowing their characters. I also think this is where my parents might've stopped letting me stay up for the 9pm cable popular sitcom - fairly, I suppose.

The energy moves great into the next (hot Christmas) episode, especially helped by one this episode's more subtle conversations of Haley and Alex opening a route for some added dramatic irony. The quick hit about Haley thinking it could be her mom's intervention was a funny glimpse into her awareness.

Probably would give a 10 but I think there are some episodes in the last season that I might want to hold that for (comfortable with setting this as my overall review barometer (as far as my credibility goes) on my first review because I know this show wins every award so there should be some 9 & 10 star episodes in here).

One of the most underrated episodes

Jay shines and moves me to tears one minute from laughing to crying from emotion. One actor that truly masters the range of acting. JTF in one scene that allows him to act outside of his character's normal self really hit a home run.

Normally i never write any reviews, this is actually the very the first one. But being triggered by the episode i just saw, i looked up some more info on internet and fell on some dumb criticism on the series (that woman are treated like being 'only' housewives etc, which seems really totally undeserved criticism, even to a working mother like me :), typical the mentality of some people that always need to find something to criticise, showing therewith that they miss the core/heart/purpose of the movie/art/music. So this (my first "review" at 59!), just to say that i love watching Modern Family, for many reasons (but no use to write them all here). Have been watching it on and off, over the past years, when had time. Just came to season 7, ep.8, where I really found that - apart from being well written, well acted, filmed, good sense of humour as usual -, that Jay, who is excellent always, here gives an exceptionally well acted scene (talking about his father). Reading the lines of the book at the end, also gives a nice insight in how things work, but in a 'light' way. ( luckily not the heavy 'Freud' way :))

So : thanks to all involved in MF, keep the good - human - work up.

One of the episodes of the entire show

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is simply phenomenal. The actors, the writers, and the director all truly outdid themselves. It's such a perfect mixture of comedy and drama. It's what makes this family so entertaining. They are flawed and might make bad decisions but ultimately they love each other and that's sweet to watch.

Ed O'Neil was especially outstanding. His monologue basically explains the entire baggage of the Pritchett family in one fell swoop.

And despite handling such heavy topics, the jokes keep coming. I was laughing one second and crying the next.

Also, always love seeing Catherine O'Hare. She's so funny in this episode as the therapist.

Love episodes like this!!

When Modern Family does simple episodes, with a simple story, like this, I love them! Group therapy. I knew it would be good from the start but it exceeded expectations. Everyone brought their A-game; writers, directors, actors, everyone. Ed O'Neil absolutely shines in this episode, I cannot express that enough! In one single monologue he seamlessly had me giggling and then crying with emotion. Amazing performance. The other stories were good as well I just don't have anything to say about them. It was a top-notch episode with a wave of emotions. That's what I love about this show, it doesn't have to be high level funny to still be good.

The episode that made me stop watching . . .
phljrhgsu14 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Poor script-writers think its funny to concoct situations where established characters act woefully out of character. In reality, all it does is make the viewer stop caring about the characters, and about the show. There is absolutely no way that Jay would ever consent to participate in such nonsense, even if Gloria were threatening to withhold sexual favors. And then even more impossible that he would experience such a contrived breakdown. The actors should have been embarrassed to see their characters turn into such caricatures. This is really a shame, because this was once the cream of the crop. But a good crop turns to junk when handled badly.

Sorry, this episode didn't do a lot for me.

I don't know why, but it never seems to make me laugh or engage with the plot.

I actually preferred the Haley/Alex plot line, and that's saying something.
