"That One Day" is an American English-language live action short film from 2016, so this one will soon have its fifth anniversary or maybe it happened already depending on when you read my review. It runs for thirteen minutes, minimally under, and the director is Crystal Moselle. She is also the co-writer at the same time. It's a very female-centered short film for sure. Most of the cast is women as well. And as you not necessarily would have guessed from the picture here on imdb and also from the title, this is a short film about skating. The consequence is that there are not too many dialogues really. A lot of the film is about the protagonists just doing their thing and trying to perform some tricks, especially the new nerdily attractive girl at the center of the story. There is a story yes, mostly about a girl trying to fit in with the other characters who have been skating longer at that particular location. Initially they are skeptical, but eventually they are growing together a bit more. I mean it is pretty stereotypical and not too creative, nothing you haven't seen before, maybe in other context than skating. Then again, it is a film that stays comfortably under a quarter of an hour, so you cannot really expect too much story-wise. And still I have seen better with this duration (a lot better actually) and I kinda expected more. The shortcomings there may also have to do with the fact that apparently most cast members are actual skaters and not actors. I would have been fine with deficits in the story-telling department if it felt really like a stylish movie with a great deal of atmosphere that basically encourages me to be out there with the characters and wathc them do their tricks or even perform my own. However, the movie did not make any emotional impact to me at all. Which partially has to do with me not really having any interest in skating whatsoever, but I also cannot say the film really sparkled it whatsoever. I assume it is a project that is really more for female audiences and I must say I am surprised that males rated this 0.1 higher than females here on imdb. Also it is really telling that for every two females who watched this, five males did. Men just love movies more I assume. Then again, the number of under 100 viewers (that rated it) is really minimal anyway and not representative whatsoever. I still think the rating here on imdb is way too high. Anyway, I see that Moselle was inspired enough by this to make a more known film about skating afterwards and I hope the story writing turned out better there than it did here. Also apparently, this is a semi-commercial for a brand (fashion it seems) called Miu Miu? Okay I would not have guessed that. Probably they mostly wore the brand's clothes in here. Overall, it's a thumbs-down because it did not really win me over from any perspective. Maybe check it out if you are into skating already and enjoy your days at the halfpipe. Otherwise, it won't get you in the groove and you can watch something else instead.
