When you're a long-running network TV series with 20-plus hours of material to deliver every season, you're inevitably going to take some wild swings to meet your quota. "Bones" was as formulaic as any other television procedural, but it had a good deal more personality and would find ways to spice things up now and then. Sometimes that meant a break in format, like when it showed an entire episode from the perspective of a victim's skull. Other times, that meant inviting further "X-Files" comparisons by forcing its investigating heroes to uncover the truth behind what appears to be an extraordinary crime.
In season 6, episode 19, "The Truth in the Myth," the power couple of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) are tasked with looking into the death of Lee Coleman (Leigh McCloskey), a myth-buster -- not that kind -- who hosted...

Barbie won’t be banned in the Philippines after all, following a week-long review by local censors and government officials, although a scene with a controversial map of the South China Sea might be blurred for release.
The Warner Bros film, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, will be released in the Philippines on July 19 as originally planned.
Censors were concerned by a scene with a map of the South China Sea that was thought to be displaying the “nine-dash line”, representing China’s territorial claims, that is contested by several governments in the region. The map scene previously got the film banned in Vietnam.
The Philippines Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (Mtrcb) said it finally concluded that the “cartoonish map” shown in the film was not intended to portray the nine-dash line. That decision was reached after screenings in front of the...

She’s a Barbie girl in a Barbie world…Unfortunately, it seems the real world – or at least the way Barbie sees it – has drawn ire from Vietnam, who has banned the upcoming movie stemming from a dispute over territory ownership.
The issue at hand directly involves the nine-dash line, a section of the South China Sea – between China, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei – that China claims ownership over, even though other countries object to this. In a short piece seen in the trailer for Barbie, the nine-dash line is featured in a childish map – so much so that it doesn’t even have the right number of dashes or an accurate shape. But the mere suggestion of it was enough for Vietnam to ban Barbie due to the apparent insult. The Philippines are currently in discussion of whether or not to release the film.

The politics of Barbie Land just became a lot more real.
After the Greta Gerwig-directed film was banned in Vietnam prior to its July 21 release date, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. responded to claims that a map featured in the trailer features the “nine-dash line,” which indicates China’s territorial claims over the South China Sea in areas Vietnam say deny its own sovereignty.
“The map in Barbie Land is a child-like crayon drawing,” the spokesperson told Variety. “The doodles depict Barbie’s make-believe journey from Barbie Land to the ‘real world.’ It was not intended to make any type of statement.”
Vi Kien Thanh, director general of the Vietnam Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, announced July 3 that “Barbie” will not be allowed to commercially screen in the country, as decided by the National Film Evaluation Council.

Days after Vietnam banned Warner Bros’ much-anticipated ‘Barbie’ movie over a scene that depicts a map of the South China Sea with the contested “nine-dash line”, the Philippines is now weighing whether to follow suit.
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board of the Philippines recently posted a notice to its website that read: “We confirm that the Board has reviewed the film Barbie today, 04 July 2023. At this time, the assigned Committee on First Review is deliberating on the request of Warner Brothers F.E. Inc. for a Permit to Exhibit.”
It did not explain the reason for the statement, as per Deadline. The controversial nine-dash line represents China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims. The U-shaped line was repudiated in an international arbitration ruling by a court in The Hague in 2016, however, China refuses to recognise the ruling,...

Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie will not be released in Vietnam. The country has banned commercial screenings of the film due to a scene that shows a map of the controversial “nine-dash line” in the South China Sea.
The U-shaped nine-dash line is a boundary China has used to claim territories in the South China Sea. This line is challenged by other nations in Southeast Asia such as Vietnam, which says the territorial declaration violates its sovereignty. Some of the contested areas are potentially rich in energy sources like oil and natural gas.
A court at The Hague in the Netherlands, which is home to the United Nation’s International Court of Justice, made a unanimous decision to reject the line, but China has ignored the ruling. There are currently no established tools for the implementation of the court’s verdict.
This is not the first movie Vietnam has banned because of the line.

“Elemental,” an opposites-attract love story set in a world of, well, elements, began its domestic box office jaunt with $2.4 million in Thursday previews. With merely decent reviews (75% fresh and 6.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) and little being sold beyond “Hey, it’s the next Pixar film!”), the Peter Sohn-directed flick could struggle to match the $29 million Fri-Sun debut (amid a $39 million Wed-Sun launch) of “Toy Story” back in 1995, let alone the over/under $39 million Fri-Sun debuts of “The Good Dinosaur” in 2015 and “Onward” (which opened a week before Covid shut down the world) in 2020.
Just running the numbers, if “Elemental” legs over the weekend like “Lightyear” ($51 million from a $5.2 million Thursday), it’ll open with just $23.5 million by Sunday night. Being more optimistic, however unlikely, if “Elemental” legs like “Cars 3” ($53 million/$2.6 million), well, then it opens with $49 million and you can ignore the next few paragraphs of doom-n-gloom.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes/Dr. Phibes Rises Again
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1971, 1972 / 1.85 : 1 / 94, 89 Min.
Starring Vincent Price, Joseph Cotten, Terry Thomas
Written by James Whiton, William Goldstein, Robert Blees
Directed by Robert Fuest
Though he thrived in light comedies and upmarket melodramas, Vincent Price didn’t really find himself till he found Henry Jarrod, the high strung sculptor-turned psychopath in 1953’s House of Wax. The role reinvented the Jekyll/Hyde story and gave Price the key to his long-lasting persona; the well-mannered fiend and the unhinged romantic merged into one tormented soul. Ticket buyers were both moved and terrified by Jarrod and the box office receipts reflected their fascination. Price was happy to dish up more of the same and though he would occasionally play no nonsense villains like the unambiguously evil Matthew Hopkins of 1968’s Witchfinder General, the actor rarely strayed too far from his comfort zone.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” made off with the No.1 spot at the box office this weekend, earning 8 million on opening day for an estimated 25 million opening from 4,009 theaters, and beating box office projections for a poor opening in the mid-teens.
While that launch is nowhere near the opening for past DreamWorks films like “The Boss Baby” (50 million) or “Trolls” (46.5 million), “The Bad Guys” has a lower reported budget than those films at around 70 million. The closest comparison from the Dwa filmography would be the 2019 film “Abominable,” which opened to 20.6 million and grossed a modest profit 188.6 million worldwide against a 75 million budget.
“The Bad Guys” could leg out and do the same, as families have embraced it with an A on CinemaScore and a 94 Rotten Tomatoes audience score to go with an 85 critics score. The comedy about a group of animal thieves trying to leave behind their life...

Sony’s “Uncharted” will not open in Vietnam after the country’s department of cinema banned it for containing a map that favors China’s claims over areas in the South China Sea.
The image of the map in the film concerns the so-called “nine-dash line,” an area of reefs in the South China Sea that is rich with oil and other natural resources — and the subject of a long-running dispute between China and Vietnam despite being part of Vietnam’s continental shelf.
“The film was banned from distribution after we watched it and found it contained an illegal image of the infamous nine-dash line,” the state-run Vietnam News Agency reported (via Reuters) based on comments by Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Department of Cinema, a government body in charge of licensing and censoring foreign films.
Reps for Sony did not respond to a request for comment.

We find ourselves in an exciting moment for American cinema telling Chinese stories, with movies such as Turning Red refusing to pander to the authoritarian regime
Pixar’s love letter to second-generation Chinese immigrant families, Turning Red, marks a milestone for Hollywood, seemingly signalling the end of its predictably doomed love affair with China. We are now two years on from the backlash against Disney’s live action Mulan remake, a film mired in controversy from its shooting on location near Xinjiang internment camps and thanking members of the Chinese Communist party’s propaganda department, to its title star supporting police violence during protests in Hong Kong in 2019.
Subsequent Hollywood-China coproductions saw a similar blowback for this form of kowtowing to China. Dreamworks’ Abominable (2019) was boycotted by Vietnamese and Malaysian audiences for its blatant support of China’s geopolitical ambitions. Netflix’s Over the Moon (2020) was praised for its attempt to represent Chinese culture,...

Sony’s hit action adventure “Uncharted” has been banned in Vietnam over the film’s inclusion of a map that depicts China’s contested territorial claims in Southeast Asia.
The film, which stars Tom Holland, Mark Walhberg and Antonio Banderas was to have arrived in Vietnamese cinemas from March 18. Prior to this weekend, the film had grossed $278 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Vietnamese state media announced the ban on Saturday. “The film was banned from distribution after we watched it and found it contained an illegal image of the infamous nine-dash line,” Vietnam News Agency reported. It cited Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Department of Cinema, the government structure responsible for licensing and censoring foreign films.
Sony did not respond to Variety’s request for comment.

A band of misfits come together to find a home where they’ll be accepted in Netflix’s latest CG-animated adventure, “Back to the Outback.” Except the lovable outcasts here happen to be among the world’s deadliest creatures, all of whom — along with a cute but completely obnoxious koala bear (voiced by Broadway’s Tim Minchin) — escape from a Sydney zoo to find a home in the Australian Outback, where they’ll be loved for who they are and not feared for what they look like.
First-time feature directors Clare Knight and Harry Cripps previously worked together on “Larrikins,” the Outback-themed feature from DreamWorks Animation that was scuttled in the wake of the studio’s acquisition by NBCUniversal in 2016. Cripps was set to co-direct the film alongside “Puss in Boots” director Chris Miller, while Knight, a Dwa veteran who had worked on the “Kung Fu Panda” trilogy, was to serve as editor.

The 48th Annie Awards, like almost every other major entertainment event in the last year, is going virtual on April 16, and the show will have a few surprises in store for those tuning in to the free program.
“We’ve got some animation. We’ve done special graphics for the show. And because we won’t have people walking to and from the stage, which always takes some time, the show will probably be a little more streamlined,” Frank Gladstone, executive director of Asifa-Hollywood and the event’s producer, explains.
Among the presenters slated for the Annie Awards are actors Josh Gad, Philippa Soo (who voices the goddess Chang’e in “Over the Moon”) and Eva Whittaker (the voice of Mebh Óg MacTíre in animated feature — independent nominee “Wolfwalkers”). Other presenters include directors Sergio Pablos (“Klaus”) and Jill Culton (“Abominable”), “Wolfwalkers” producer Nora Twomey, composer Michael Giacchino and the cast of web series “Critical Role.

The live-action “Powerpuff Girls” pilot at The CW has found its three leads, with Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault all joining the show.
The “Powerpuff Girls” live-action series was first announced as being in development back in August. Based on the Cartoon Network series created by Craig McCracken, the new series sees the pint-sized superheroes as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
Bennet has been cast as Blossom, Cameron has been cast as Bubbles, and Perrault has been cast as Buttercup. The pilot reunites Bennet and Camerson, though this time they will play allies instead of enemies. Both previously appeared in the ABC-Marvel series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” in which Bennet’s character and Cameron’s fought against each other.

Lulu Wang and Adele Lim on Lessons From ‘Mulan’: Why Hollywood Must Reimagine Asian-Inspired Stories
When Lulu Wang read the announcement that Ron Howard would direct legendary Chinese pianist Lang Lang’s Hollywood-produced biopic, she took to Twitter to raise the question, “Have we learned nothing from ‘Mulan?'”
In a series of tweets, the writer-director of “The Farewell” questioned the move, challenging the creative team’s limited understanding of both Chinese cultural history and the specificities of the pianist (and Wang’s) birthplace, Northeast China.
Wang used a metaphor to compare Hollywood’s efforts to produce stories about people of color and finding good American Chinese food at a restaurant: “Does this mean no one else can make this food? Of course not. I happen to love orange chicken. But isn’t it time we all expect more than orange chicken?”
“I really wish this wasn’t such a divisive issue,” Wang tells Variety, explaining that her comments have been misconstrued by the media...

There’s a load of great content coming to Netflix in November, but just as is always the case, there are also a bunch of titles being removed from the streaming service at the same time. Next month, the platform is losing 53 movies and TV shows. There are some classics amongst them, too, unfortunately, so you might want to fit in a last minute rewatch before they vanish from Netflix’s library.
On the first day of November, four titles are being removed, including horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, children’s animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Gerard Butler action movie Olympus Has Fallen. 2017 horror Death House is also leaving on the 4th, while drama Into the Forest departs Netflix on the 6th and Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless is among those disappearing the following day.
Here’s the full list of everything leaving in November:...

Netflix has dropped the final trailer for “Over the Moon” (streaming October 23) in celebration of the Autumn Moon Festival in China. Directed by Disney legend and Oscar winner Glen Keane (“Dear Basketball”), the eye-popping animated musical reworks the ancient Chinese Moon Goddess fable as an “Oz”-like fantasy.
To promote the trailer on Monday, regional cover artists, and “Over the Moon” voice actor Ken Jeong teased separate installments on Twitter as the moon rose across their respective countries.
The co-production with Pearl Studio (“Abominable”) was animated at Sony Pictures Imageworks, with Oscar winner John Kahrs (“Paperman”) serving as co-director, and Oscar winner Gennie Rim (“Dear Basketball”) producing with Pearl’s Peilin Chou.
In “Over the Moon” (scripted by the late Audrey Wells of “The Hate U Give”), 13-year-old Fei Fei (Cathy Ang), builds a rocket to the moon to meet the legendary goddess, Chang’e (Phillipa Soo of “Moana” and...
