A fitting, even if perfect, finale
elihuevalerio21 August 2018
I won't deny - I have mixed feelings about this show ending after three seasons. I had hoped for at least one or two more. However, the ending is fitting even if it isn't perfect. It has some fine acting from Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta. Hopefully the Emmys will at least give them both a nomination. I feel their performances have been top-notch throughout the duration of this show, and they keep getting overlooked.

Without spoiling, the bulk of the episode centers around Harlee going in front of the police commission to expose Ramsey's corruption. The tension is palpable as we wait to see if her witness is going to show, or if she's going to finally have to come clean of her choices. Ramsey is a lothable character, which makes it all the more nail biting. The courtroom focus works very well and keeps you guessing how it all will turn out.

I had mixed feelings about the last 10 minutes of the episode, which wraps things up with a (somewhat) neat bow and gives the show a fairy fitting end. A final choice by Woz in a scene with him and Ramsey seems a bit of a stretch and kind of negates where the story goes regarding Harlee's decision.

In the end the writers opted for a morality tale with a clear cut ending that is satisfying simply for the reason that it doesn't "just end." However, you can't help but think about the other characters in the show and see a bit of imbalance and unfairness when comparing the conclusion of their stories versus the outcome of Harlee's story. This takes away some of the satisfaction regarding the ending and leaves us feeling a bit let down.

All in all, it's a decent conclusion. Is it perfect? No. But when you think about where the story began, and remember shows that have ended on a huge letdown ("Dexter," "The Glades," or "The Following," anybody?), we can be grateful for a generally solid wrap-up.

Please, gag me with a spoon. Harlee Santos endless dramatic dry tears has cheapened this series to being unwatchable

Jennifer Lopez who plays the multi-faceted heroine, loving and guardian mother, goddess to all her male lovers in this cop/crime show, task force team player, tough as nails defender of the victim(s), corrupt cop, killer, all mean nothing when every single episode of season 3 has Harlee Santos (Jennifer Lopez) reflecting on her dirty deeds with fake crocodile tears and over the top facial expressions of desperation in every scene she seems to be in.

This season ending, and most likely also the series ending episode in which Jennifer Lopez who plays first class detective Harlee Santos agrees to expose the rampant corruption within the higher echelons of the New York city police department was so boring and was used merely as a poor man's tool "in an attempt" to showcase Ms. Lopez shallow acting talents. Unfortunately Harlee Santos whose fake crocodile tears in front of her court tribunal throughout this episode served only as a silent killer for the entire cast who while the producers assumed Ms. Lopez could single handed save the series, the opposite occurred as she killed the series.

Season 1 and part of season 2 utilized a cast of characters (especially the great actor Ray Liotta) to draw a significant audience in to their individual stories. As season 3 opened and then progressed each episode, it became evident that the series writers bent to the will of Ms. Lopez's (lack of a) talent agent and focussed solely on Harlee Santos character. My personal opinion of Jennifer Lopez has diminished greatly by season 3 of Shades of Blue.

A strong and confident actor/actress would never have allowed a crime/cop series to focus solely on their own egotistical TV character. Harlee Santos final narrative through a letter she reads to the TV audience addressed to her daughter Cristina is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It was the kiss of death scene for the series. Say goodbye Harlee Santos. As for Ms. Lopez, stick to Dancing With the Stars.
