backtracking through poor judgment
ferguson-624 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings again from the darkness. We have learned through books, movies, and especially real life, that evil can arrive in many forms and often strikes when we are at our most vulnerable. Such is the remarkable and personal story told here by Benita Alexander. As an Emmy winning Producer for NBC News, she proclaims that she should be the last person who should fall victim in the way that she did. Whether seizing the professional opportunity to tell a fantastic story or going through the process as a form of therapy, Benita guides us through a maze of deceit that rocked the medical world, as well as her personal life.

Home video from a honeymoon suite in picturesque Santorini Greece in 2014 is how Benita initiates her confession of having fallen fast and hard for Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, a world renowned surgeon. In what can best be described as a whirlwind romantic fairy tale, Benita describes love at first sight (at a 2013 interview), Cinderella-type wedding plans featuring world leaders and the Pope, and the crushing emotional angst when it all came crashing down.

Benita utilizes her investigative reporting skills to present her story in a way that helps us understand how all of this could have happened. The doctor swept her off her feet with lavish gifts and jet-setting trips, and then charmed her friends and family - all while receiving accolades for his revolutionary work with artificial trachea transplants. The film takes us to New York City, Rome, Barcelona, London and Russia, as Benita's high and low points are revealed.

Steven Spielberg's movie CATCH ME IF YOU CAN told the story of charlatan Frank Abignale, and though he stole money and broke trust, Abignale's tale possesses none of the evil or madness of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini. His were no pranks. This was no episode of "Punk'd". This doctor's cruelty goes far beyond. We hear words like Frankenstein and murder to describe him and his reprehensible actions that left patients dying excruciating deaths. Benita tries to balance the story with her shattered dreams and the medical scandal, but seriously, it's difficult to muster much sympathy for someone getting caught up in the social lives of the elite. It's the doctor's inexcusable medical fraud that is most overwhelming to us as viewers and caring human beings.

Benita is denied the ribbon on her story package as her final phone conversation leaves her lacking an answer to "Why?" Her emotions and pain are minimized to us when she admits to being "conflicted". This viewer found no reason for conflict, only anger and disgust. Dr. Paolo Macchiarini may have been "selling hope", and falling for his act may be forgiven, but once the fraud is exposed, there is no room for mercy or conflict.

The documentary was scheduled to stream on Investigation Discovery starting February 14. Valentine's Day is either the best or worst day for this airing, depending on your perspective.

The problem with journalism
johnrgrady26 June 2022
This illustrates that journalists today believe what they want to believe and don't really investigate anything. How many red flags does someone need?

I don't get the hate here
andreapmh10 June 2021
I found this doc very fascinating and I'm surprised the other reviews find Benita narcissistic. I found her very sympathetic and I think what happened to her could happen to anyone. Yes, she could have gotten into the major failings in the medical community, there is a lot there, but this was her story. That was enough.

I don't know how one could make this subject so tedious
Manners-Kumar13 August 2019
The documentary maker took a wicked and mysterious character and chose to make this about herself and her reactions. Falling for and being disappointed by this charmer is only one small aspect of story; more questions should have been asked of his employers and their vetting processes. Professionally he was a disaster.

Total missed opportunity
eogeaux30 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is the story about a journalist who is really really bad at her job. What makes me really hate this film is that the story is about a doctor who actually murdered people, even children, but she is so self absorbed she makes it about a dream wedding she is cheated out of. I mean really. PEOPLE DIED but you didn't get reimbursed for wedding invitations that cost you 10k. I just can't even begin to tell you how embarrassing this is. The movie plays out like some extravagant episode of "cheaters," (but just as trashy) when I really feel like it should be about medical exploitation of his victims with maybe a little backstory about how he lied to you about a fairytale. Totally missed the point here, but I guess that's what happens when you give self indulgent narcissists a video camera and 85 minutes of airtime..

She's An Award-Winning Producer? Really?
helenahandbasket-9373421 August 2022
Given the supposed professional stature of the subject, I'd expected so much more from this- instead it feels like an icky, gross tabloid retelling.

On a more personal note- this woman is my age, but she looks twice as old, trying to look half the age; too much makeup, too much Botox, too much narcissism.

There's so much effort placed into name dropping, like everyone should just know who these people are, or even care. Maybe it's to try and make us 'little people' jealous, but it just comes off as pretentious and condescending.

You walk away from this with many thoughts; astonishment at the willingness to be duped so deeply, the disregard for common sense at every turn, disgust at dragging a child into this complete and utter train wreck of an horrific tragedy. But most of all, stunned at the casualness that actual victims that lost family to this duplicitous doctor who lied in order to experiment on unsuspecting people thinking he'd save their lives, and aren't even casually mentioned until halfway through this, well, whatever this is.

This egomaniac and her cabal of 'friends' who couldn't bring themselves to tell their friend suspicions and accusations, are so busy blaming this villain they couldn't bring themselves to point the finger at themselves for being so blinded by celebrity, by vast wealth, and by a wish to believe that outweighed the ability to be rational.

This person chose to quit her job, to spend money, and most importantly to drag her child into this horrific situation ignoring every single flaming red flag- which she has the audacity to conflate to being on par with the patients. No really. These people fell actual victim due to medical malpractice; trusting physicians who were duped by him, but had no part in being a victim- she gleefully and giddily went along with the charade, despite claiming to be a journalist, possessing reasonable investigative skills.

Doctors will always protect their own- that's not surprising. 'That's what medical malpractice is for!!', they claim, they'll still claim he's a brilliant surgeon and I wouldn't allow him to operate on my worst enemy's pet gerbil. But this debacle was well within her ability to discern and suss out, she's just chose to become a willing accomplice, dragging her child along the path.

STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO ACTUAL, TRAGIC VICTIMS, you didn't have to fall down his rabbit hole, and you certainly didn't have to be such an utter dupe.

What a waste of time to watch. Dateline did a much better version of this without being so drenched in narcissism.

Documentary about two out of severely out of touch people
lornamillerharris2 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
By the time the story was told I had little sympathy for either.

Maybe if she'd donated her engagement ring to a charity of her choice she could have redeemed herself. Instead, she threw it into the river on camera to make some kind of statement.

The statement to me was how self-absorbed she was and still is.

morten_kornum26 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If you want to watch a documentary about a woman who feels so sorry about herself not thinking in any way about other people but only sees herself as a woman who has been oh so unfair treated this is the documentary for you.

As a journalist you are supposed to know about facts and lies. She makes it look like her life is oh so hard in the end EVEN tho people died because of him...

Poor old spoiled woman...

Poorly Done Given Her Profession
wendymfowler3 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Like others mentioned, it felt like the fact that this man was responsible for the deaths of several people was more of an afterthought.

Her narration didn't feel natural, which given her profession is disappointing.

And for the love of all things holy, STOP WITH THE HORRIBLE, THICK BLACK EYELINER!!! I couldn't look at the screen most of the time when she was on it. Blech.

Narcissistic woman vs narcissistic man
peneloperandez-1563116 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've never been so disappointed and embarrassed for a woman as I was this Benita. Everything was about her, while she tried to throw in sympathy for children and people who died. She would take this man back today if he would give her half a chance. This was a documentary of a scorned spoiled narcissistic woman trying to get revenge on a narcissistic sociopath. She's just as disgusting as he is.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend
ssarsilmazkthy2 February 2021
A woman who actually cares and worries more about her wedding , ring , wedding gown more than ethics in medicine and journalism. I just couldn't finish the show because it was like a bad soap opera

How could anyone go along with this ??
ozdavid25 August 2021
Firstly , on a personal observation , girl , you absolutely need a makeover. That hideous under eye makeup , the obvious heavy Botox , that absurd VERY heavy makeup AND that over-dyed silly black hair says it all. Wake up to the real world! You are no longer 21 !!!

This pathetic documentary shows that some have no idea of reality (or even care) just go for whatever they can get , no matter how totally ridiculous it sounds along the way.

Some of the utter nonsense that was fed to many people in this and they seemed to have possibly believed ........ well it's absurd. Everyone deserved what they got , other than those poor sad patients who passed away. RIP.
