The Horror Story Missed

When I found out a movie had been made about the Russian Sleep Experiment horror story, I was ecstatic. This is one of my favorite horror stories. I knew this had to be one I watched.

Immediately, the movie details from the source material focusing on the lead scientist and his interview with detectives about the experiment. We focus more on a story instead of experiencing the study. The scenes outside of the experiment fell flat for me. Neither party seemingly interested in what is happening throughout with exceptions.

The scenes inside the experiment were where the film shined. They were closer to the source, while still deviating. The acting inside of the experiment scenes were also more engaging following these 5 men and their lack of sleep.

Sadly, at the climax the movie decides to deviate entirely from the source material. If you do not want spoilers, avoid the rest of this.

Once they remove the men from the experiment that is it. The film focuses fully on the head scientist who is revealed to be the true psychopath. The film decided to ignore the source material and focus on the more boring aspect. In the original, it has a heavy focus on the last remaining survivor and their total descent into insanity. Instead, our last survivor is not insane and is just mentioned to have succumbed to infection.

Sadly, the ending of the film ruined it all for me as a fan of the source material. It was so disappointing to not see it focus on the insanity of the survivor and the effects the study truly had. It could have been so much better.

All in all, it was a solid watch. For those that don't know the original, they may like it more. In my opinion this is just another director that decided they wanted to make their own choices instead of staying true to the outline provided. A disappointing theme in modern media.

Review for The Sleep Experiment

This is a movie that I got the chance to see thanks to Justin Cook when he sent over the screener. The title caught my interest as I believe there is an urban legend about an experiment that was called something similar from Russia. Sleep is an intriguing idea so I was pulled to check this out. I didn't read too much since my interest was piqued.

Synopsis: two detectives begin an investigation into a disastrous secret military experiment where five prisoners were kept awake for thirty days in a sealed gas chamber.

To just a expand a bit more on this synopsis, we see vehicles driving out into the middle of nowhere. It is an isolated stretch. Masks are on the people that are being escorted. They arrive at a compound of sorts. We also see guards that are in hazmat suits. The people that are in masks are prisoners. They're led into the chamber and informed of the rules.

This experiment is to see the effects of this gas that is being pumped in. It will keep them awake. They need to stay up for 30 consecutive days. If they do, they'll be freed. They're not allowed to attack the others. They will also be provided with food to get through. This is also happening in 1961. The movie from there is broken into five chapters.

While they are in here, we get to know the different people and their personalities. Of the ones being held, there is Sean (Brian Moore) who comes off as aggressive. There is Luke (Will Murphy) who likes to push buttons. He also seems the most psychotic of the group. There is also Patrick (Sam McGovern), Edward (Rob James Capel) and one other person with them.

This is synced up with the present of the movie. There are two detectives, one of them being Robert (Barry John Kinsella). They are interrogating a doctor, Christopher (Tom Kerrisk). Their goal is to find out more about this experiment and what happened. They are looking to figure out who should be arrested since it seems that it ended poorly. Christopher was the one that was in charge. He isn't overly forthcoming with information. The deeper they dig; the more depraved things seem to be. What sparked this are recordings of the experiment. There also seems to be a hidden tape that is missing that could give away the truth of what happened during this sleep experiment.

That is where I'm going to leave my recap and introduction to some of the characters. Where I want to start is with things that I led off with. This experiment is interesting to me. I do not like to sleep and only do it because I must. This starts saying that it is based on true events. It has me intrigued to investigate what is real behind this. I just haven't had the time yet. I will admit though that seeing that blurb in the front does make me chuckle. Nothing against this movie, just in general though as that sometimes feels like a cash grab.

Then with that out of the way, I love the idea of this experiment. Sleep is such an odd thing. We must do it to function properly. Times where my anxiety is high, I've had insomnia. It made me panic. What is wild though is that has happened for one night or like when I'm sick. Growing up I've stayed up all night and eventually I'll crash. I've never done it for days which is what happens here. This gas they said was made for military applications. I think it is wild that it will keep them up for as long as it will. It does cause them to hallucinate eventually. That is more from sleep depravity than what is being pumped in. What is also interesting though is that they're using criminals. It sounds like almost all have killed someone. A couple of the participants did theirs in a fit of rage so that is more for circumstance. Luke is a legitimate psychopath though who looks to get under the others sick on purpose. This is a recipe for disaster. It also makes sense in the end. There are things being done that the participants aren't aware of to track their reactions.

Now everything I've laid out there is intriguing to me. My problem with this movie is that we get away from it. The detectives that are interviewing Christopher is the story we are following with the experiment being why. I just don't find this as captivating. I like it as a set up for what we are getting. I want to see more of the experiment playing out though. The issue I see is that it could get boring as it takes time for things to happen. I will say that I like Kerrisk's performance as this doctor. He has an arrogance about him and the more we learn, the more of a monster he is. This experiment has a correlation to this story so it explains why the detectives care outside of making sure someone gets punished. It just didn't hold my interest as much and I also guessed the reveal.

I do have to give credit to Overly Honest Reviews for this bit here. I saw their thoughts about how this is pushing about how criminals are looked down upon for committing crimes when those higher ups are doing much worse. Looking back, I did realize it during my watch or at least thought of it but completely forgot about that thread until seeing that. They are correct as that is a good point and wanted to credit them here.

There isn't much more to go into for the story so I'll go over to the acting. I've already said that I liked Kerrisk's performance. Kinsella was solid as well. I liked our group that are in the experiment as well. They all have distinct personalities so even though I don't remember all their names, I know a bit about each of them. McGovern, Moore, Murphy, Capel and the rest of the cast rounded this out for what was needed.

The last thing that I will go into would be with the filmmaking. I thought that cinematography was good. There is a drab feel to it and that comes from the setting. It gives it a depressing feel which fits. I know that we got the year of 1961, which is when the experiment takes place if memory serves. Since it is contained down there and isolated, they don't need to convey much more than that. Prisoner's uniforms tend to stay the same over the years and how they look fit. I thought all this was fine even for the present of the movie. Other than that, we get limited effects. What we get looked good though as this goes bloody at the climax. The soundtrack also fit for what was needed without necessarily standing out.

In conclusion, this movie has an interesting set up. I like the idea of this experiment and it is terrifying that at least part of this is based in facts. The acting is solid across the board. No one necessarily stood out aside from Kerrisk and Murphy, but no one was bad. This is well-made as I had no glaring issues there. The story felt a bit predictable to me. I still enjoyed my time with it even though it lost steam.

Confusing

Who was the burn victim that was the detectives dad? Who were the 9 people that died? They said 2 soldiers and the people in the experiment. This movie was weird and not really in a good way. The main psychopath psychiatrist would be a great voice actor for a vampire film tho. Overall, it had moments that were chilling visually. The story was interesting. Lots of details and things fell apart in the end of the days. I gave it a 2 because I've seen worse psych patients films. This movie reminded me of the crazy and horrible tests done under the doctors of the Holocaust. It was interesting but not the best I've seen.

Not as smart or clever as it thinks it is

Rather surprisingly, at least for me, the most interesting and compelling part of this flim were the prisoner/participants. Their interactions and backstories and even brief attempts to piece together some connection between them all and the experiment were all significantly more interesting than the police investigation framing narrative or the goofy doctor.

As for where it starts to come apart is the ending. After apparently proudly setting up little clues throughout the film, it indulges itself in a bit overly long expo-dump basically revealing some shocking and disturbing twist behind the motivation of the experiment, but nothing really regarding the experiment itself.

The problem with this is that the "disturbing twist" was somewhat easily figured out long, long before it unfolded. And given how the ending went, it was seemingly clear that this twist was all they had, and they fumbled it pretty badly.

Without spoiling it, I can only say, as an unrelated but parallel example; when a criminal acts like a weirdo and a freak in front of the police, they are going to attract attention to themselves. And the audience is going to be all over it.

"The Sleep Experiment" is the blandest and most boring film I've seen in a while. It was a complete waste of the source material... coming from me, a horror cinephile and film nerd.

From the start of this film, I was not expecting great things and over the course of the film, it gradually became worse and worse.

Let's break some parts down...

1. The "chapters" that this film break itself down into are nonsensical and add nothing to the chronology or context of the scenes. They are pointless title card and set up nothing and usually do not follow what they set up.

2. The LONG fades to black. There was absolutely no need for these really, really long fades to black at the ends of scenes. There is nothing that happens that justifies the use of these to let you have that scene linger in your mind... there's nothing to linger. Cut to the next scene and move on.

3. The "sound" and "atmospheric" background noise is completely pathetic and distracting. Whether it is the random phone in the background of the interrogation scenes or the random alarm, it makes me feel like they went on Google and typed in "copyright background thriller music" and then just chucked it in anywhere. It added nothing to the scenes.

4. There are throwaway sentences spoken to "add context" or give you more of the story... which are there never followed up on or explained. The detectives father with burns on his face... who was that? When did that happen? There was no fire... no acids of any kind... so what was that about? Then "9 people died".... WHO?! 2 soldiers and the people in the experiment... did anyone actually read this script? Or did they use ChatGPT? Actually, no, ChatGPT would make a good script.

5. The acting was substandard with only a few exceptions. I'll be honest, having done Sixth Form Drama (UK) and Drama at university, even the worst of performers on my courses could have gave better performances. The actors delivered their lines like they were reciting them for the first time. Their characters did not feel well rounded or believable and they gave nothing to draw the audience in. It felt so amateur it was crazy.

I could go on picking it apart... but I'll just say this film was truly disappointing and not worth the watch. I try and find redeeming qualities for films, but this film does not have any. The plot had more holes than Swiss cheese and felt like it had no heart or passion in it, the acting left little to the imagination and as previously stated, if you go in with the original creepypasta story in your head, it's no where near and I think that's what will draw most people to the film... the idea it had something to do with that... it does not. I'd say avoid at all costs. Truly terrible.

Unsettling in a good way, confusing ending

Kind of an odd movie that remains unsettling in the best way. The characters are all pretty interesting though they all kind of come off as average joes at the beginning. You really feel bad for all these men for being subjected to this experiment by the end, it's a bit of a tragic movie. At several points I was asking "Why didn't the experimenters intervene in any way?" but they were said to have been neglectful whole holding the experiment. The whole movie is kinda done in past tense with the main characters being the test subjects of the experiment, though their story is told in retrospect when an investigator interviews the man who had held the experiment a few decades prior. This mode of telling the story works quite well, except for the very end when it's kind of unclear what happens at the end of the experiment. It's not really scary or theater of the mind what's omitted, I just wish they would've shown us what happened during the climax instead of beatting around it, that's the one thing the retrospective mode of telling the story does wrong.

Other than that, this movie works quite well for what it wants to do. Many of the characters are likable despite the aweful things they end up doing, and this movie does a good job, espetially with a few characters, of making it beleivable how they become a psychopath. This movie talks a lot about psychopaths, though it doesn't really say anything original or have much of a clever message like it might try to have.

Very Entertaining

This is more of a thriller/Suspense film than anything bit certainly could have become a horror film, but it stops short of it. I know nothing of the real experiments this is based on, but I found out it is based on real-life experiments. It seems more interested in philosophy than suspense though. There is a lot of "Why did this experience happen?" As opposed to what happened. This will certainly frustrate some viewers because the best parts certainly are showing the experiment themselves and those scenes are very tense. Rather than just getting the patients perspective we hear the experimenters perspective in retrospect. This will definitely frustrate some viewers, but I honestly don't understand the low ratings.

The writing is pretty decent, it's well-acted, filmed, and directed. Some of the editing makes it slightly jarring, but on the whole it still works. I came in with no expectations, maybe this helped? I really would have liked more insight into the patients, and a little more on specifically how each character does because we just don't get much information. However, on the whole it was well-done, despite it's flaws, is probably give it a 6.5, it could have been great, but it's still quite good.

Cringe

This movie is ass and the acting is terrible. Multiple times the characters double state things, redundant script. Nothing was surprising or exciting, just a handful of really crappy actors in one room yelling at the walls. Also, that scene where the one guy is hallucinating his mother and he's walking around mumbling in the spotlight, that scene alone has got to be one of the cheapest and cringiest scenes in the history of film, ever, next to the street performer that was casted as an evil psychologist. Did this film even get a fair chance? Did the actors, directors, producers even try? Snore.

After a promising start, the ending felt wanting.

I read the creepy pasta that this movie is based on, and it is quite unsettling. This started out with some promise but it felt like it was disjointed in the second act and didn't really give the audience any real resolution to the story. I think they could have developed Luke's story more, as he was the more interesting and perverse of the inmate characters. It felt like a missed opportunity, even with the level of depravity he showed pretending to have killed Edwards daughter. Overall it wasn't an entirely unpleasant movie, which is why I still gave it a 6/10 stars. I think that if they had just stuck more closely to the source material it would have made for a more promising film as well but the film we got could have been worse.

Great until the last 10 minutes

I was excited for this movie because I know the original story. Sadly the ending went way left and was confusing.

The movie had so much potential! I was hoping for a spooky dive into why humans sleep and what dwells in beyond realms. Instead we get a phoned in stereotypical crazy scientist.

Honestly I was in and out during the ending...but from what I grasped the doctor wanted to see what ALREADY convicted violent criminals would do if they couldn't sleep? What was the point of Luke pretending that he killed Ed's daughter? And the experiment had nothing to do with the gas? I am so confused!

Hoping for a remake! Everything was perfect until the last couple of scenes.

After I read about this movie I knew from where it drew the inspiration. But being a UK production, it was bound to be different. And it sure was, very different than the Russian nightmare, which I think would look amazing on screen given a proper rating and execution.

The Sleep Experiment is a mellow version of what we could have had, but still interesting and fun experience. Very good characters, nice development of the three acts and a finale that was maybe a little too ambitious. But dare I say, I appreciate the effort and trust it had in its own powers, to be its own thing and show what it wanted to show.

Overall, I do recommend this one, it is quite tame indeed but nevertheless a nice add to the horror list.

I have not actually seen this movie I've only read about it. There are some that believe that the story is based off of a real experiment called " The Russian sleep experiment". The story of The Russian sleep experiment is an urban myth and is merely just internet creepy past. Not to say numerous unimaginable experiments did not/ do not still happen all the time... in Russia and all over the world. The Russian sleep experiment story is definitely very creepy if not horrifying and just as good or better than any movie. Also Google Creepy Pasta for many more stories of horror. That will have you on the edge of your seat and at times even having your stomach in knots.
