Must watch movie
a_kadu9 November 2018
Director has done the exceptional job and all actors have given the best performances to make this excellent biopic. And what can i say about Subodh. He is already proved himself in 'Balgandharv' with his intense acting. While watching this movie i feeled like It's actual Kashinath and not Subodh anywhere.

And...finally a biopic that's real!
priyawagle11 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Review - Aani...Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar Watched a biopic after a long time. And what a movie! Honestly, I did not grow up watching Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar, his movies or plays. The only faint memory I have about him is watching the hummable song Gomu Sangtina on Chhaya Geet where he is shown prancing in the hills wearing black tight pants and printed shirt dancing along with Asha Kale dressed in a nine-yard saree. I was totally not aware of the superstar cult status Dr. Ghanekar had achieved during the 60s and 70s. A dentist by education, acting was his passion. He apparently started as a prompter in plays and simultaneously tried auditioning for six long years till he got his first break as an actor albeit in a small role. And that's how the movie begins to roll in the flashback. Given my limited awareness about this Marathi super star I was pretty overwhelmed seeing the magic, the aura, the charisma, the passion, the versatile personality, the inimitable style, and the real man Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar showcased in the biopic. A biopic typically tends to highlight only the good while the bad and ugly side of the person is masked due to compulsions. This movie has shown Dr. Ghanekar as he was. The movie has not only captured the superstar's life and shining personality with all his strengths but also captured his failings, his alcoholism, womanizing ways, arrogance, quite immaculately. The movie is all encompassing as it highlights the contributions of significant personalities who were behind his glory and also those who stood by him through thick and thin. Not just the haves but have-nots too. This is director Abhijeet Deshpande's debut film and is almost impeccable. He has managed to draw out fantastic acting from each and every actor in the film. Subodh Bhave has once again showcased he is a brilliant actor by embracing the role of Dr. Ghanekar so honestly that at one point in the movie you forget that he is just playing the character and not Dr. Ghanekar himself. Every actor whether it is Pradip Velankar in a miniscule part playing the father's role, Mohan Joshi playing Bhalji Pendharkar, or Kishore Chougule playing his Man Friday, each and every one has essayed the role intelligently and astutely. The reason I said 'almost' impeccable earlier is because the era of 1960s and 70s could have been showcased more realistically. For e.g. the audience in the theater halls could have very well passed off as today's audience too. The focus is rather more on the appearance of important characters in the film. Now this observation is based on the meagre knowledge I have about films and I may be wrong. All other actors viz. Sonali Kulkarni, Anand Ingale, Nandita Dhuri, Sumeet Raghavan, Prasad Oke, Vaidehi Parshurami, and Suhas Palshikar have all personified their characters flawlessly. Given their repertoire (except Vaidehi probably) and experience in films/theater they have truly lived up to the expectations of the audience. And Vaidehi in spite of lesser experience compared to other actors has enacted the young and much in love (with Dr. Ghanekar) Kanchan Ghanekar's role to a T. Here is a film I am sure will shine brightly for its content, acting, script and direction for now and posterity. If you have grown up watching Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar's plays and films you will be transported back in time and relive those memories of Kashinath era yet again. And if you are like me, you will still be transported back in the era of 1960s and 70s and get to experience the magic of the first superstar of Marathi Theater and films. And finally I would like to share one scene/dialogue in the film that has stayed with me and will probably stay forever. The voiceover says that the first clap the actor receives for his performance is like a curse of Goddess Saraswati. The audience claps. The actor hears the tali (claps). And then the tali seduces him. So much so that he now starts acting for more and more tali, and forgets about acquiring more taleem (working hard to acquire more skills). And truly, what really caused the downfall of Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar (as shown in the film) was this tali, the applause and his addiction for his fan following so much so that he failed to evolve as an actor even when an equally strong contemporary in the form of Dr. Shriram Lagoo came on the scene and gradually stole his thunder. And along with it the many roles that could have come his way.

Ani....Worth watching once
drvsle8 November 2018
Its always challenging to present biography of any popular person on screen as people have their own concepts about that person and they may have read books, heard news about that person or seen him. And if it is about popular and complicated person like Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar it is more difficult. But Abhijeet Deshpande has succeeded in lifting this bow of Lord Shiva! Subodh Bhave has done full justice to the character and is supported by Prasad,Sonali,Vaidehi,Sumit ,Nandita etc. The make up artist has failed in showing the growing age of any character as the story covers so many years. The inner conflits of a narcissist actor and his downhill journey is well portrayed but it doesn't touch you emotionally and you remain just a spectacter without getting involved. Also that particular period is not exactly elaborated (so it remains a drama on screen)

What a come back of Dr. Ghanekar!!!!
riddhichiplunkar8 November 2018
At the end Dr. Ghanekar couldn't do his comeback on stage. His audience lost their legendary Hero.... It hurts a lot!! But....but now he did his grand come back again through this movie. Subodh had done an excellent job! While watching movie you just see Dr. Ghanekar on screen and not Subodh. Can't understand who is superior. There's still magic in Dr. 's name. Subodh had completed Dr.' s dream of come back!!!!!! Hearty congratulations to the team and especially Subodh!!

Excellent Movie
daveshweta13 November 2018
Dear readers,

What a movie!!!!!!!!! I am amazed with Mr. Subhodh Bhave's performance, an excellent star cast and screenplay. I am a hardcore Marathi Cinema fan and this movie was a great tribute to Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar. I felt like an old soul while having an opportunity to watch behind the scenes of my most favorite song - "Shoor Amhi Sardar..." I literally sang that song during the movie (haha!). I want to watch this movie again, but unfortunately, I am in Boston, MA, wherein the movie only ran through last weekend and Monday! So much for being a Marathi movie fan!!

Lots of respect for Subhodh Bhave and the entire star cast! Three cheers to Mr. Abhijit Deshpande.

Warning: Spoilers
This is one fine Marathi cinema. Acting, cinematography and direction- you can't get better that this. Subodh Bhave has already proved himself over and over again and Vaidehi Parshurami is simply brilliant!! Portraying a biopic of a person as complicated as Kashinath Ghanekar on big screen is a challenge. This movie does that a justice. However, the are a few parts where movie fails to make sense. Character sketch of Irawati Ghanekar is far too weak to complement any scene or it's depth. So much so it felt like screenwriter tried to soften the blow of the heartbreak to come. Also, the timeline of the character's life is not clear. Beginning, end nor the lapse of time is clear enough to bring to audiences' attention the timeline of career or relationships. Having said that, it's a movie you must watch if you want enjoy brilliant acting and direction, while forgiving some flaws that are inevitable in a biopic.

A film complimented by great acting
npdeo1829 September 2019
Only after seeing this movie did i came to know about the legend named Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar. I have been hearing the two classic songs featured in this film since my childhood but only after seeing this movie did i come to know that it featured the legend. The biggest plus point of the film along with pace of the movie was the performance of its main cast and supporting actors whether it is Subodh Bhave (who is becoming a master of acting in biopics) or Sumeet Raghavan or Prasad Oak or Suhas Palshikar and many more & the chemistry between all the actors were equally good especially the scenes featuring Oak & Bhave. But the shooting locales & the sets featured in the film did not feel authentic and at times the flow of the film trudges the path similar to what we see in other biopics (i.e. the rise and fall of the personalities).

When the result for the national awards were being announced i felt that this year it should be given to Subodh Bhave for the best actor performance but those hopes were dashed. Hope he gets a National Award for the best actor in the future. The reason being that Marathi actors apart from Nana Patekar, Sachin Khedekar or Shreeram Lagoo have not received the desired recognition.

(On a funny note if Ayushmann Khurrana has in mastered in acting in films of social taboo then Subodh Bhave has mastered in films of biopic genre. )

DOESN'T REACH HIGH LEVEL EXPECTATIONS MARK
SAMTHEBESTEST7 November 2018
ANI DR KASHINATH GHANEKAR REVIEW-

Teasers and trailer of the film had created so much hype that one might have had humongous expectations especially knowing the fact that Biopic is the genre which increases the chances. Film fulfills its Writing and Story entirely but unfortunately does not reach the high level bar. This problem usually appears just because the film carries a burden of huge expectations, so even Good films looks Average. Another reasons is, Subodh Bhave has done 2 Biopics before, out of which one was a Classic and the other one too went on to receive good response. Kashinath probably carried the burden of these 2 films like, will Subodh make an Hat-trick this time? He certainly does but again how far he goes, not really far honestly.

Ani Dr Kashinath Ghanekar has a Big Acting team loaded with Big names. Starting with Subodh Bhave, he's Phenomenal, his looks, his dialogue delivery, his Versatility, he has just explored an Actor himself even more widely this time. Prasad Oak does justice to his role, Vaidehi Parahurami looks cute. Sonali Kulkarni somehow manages to bring that Somberness of Sulochana Didi. Other cast members are brilliant too. Writing is Excellent considering we knew its a true story so the truth has to be there rather than filmy non-sense just to make a film out of it. Screenplay is kind of Very simple as it doesn't really offer any entertainment or wow factors. Music is somewhere on down side but the Background score recovers that loss. Abhijeet Deshpande as Writer wins it but as a Director of the film, destination is far away. Some more reaserch, quite more attention towards quality and this film would have reached that expected height.

There were many Legends in Marathi Cinema and drama world and we have so many stories to make films on them instead of wasting time and money doing remakes hence Ani Dr Kashinath Ghanekar deserves the Respect for choosing this subject and moreover attempting it fully with tremendous efforts and on large scale. Expecting a Classic isn't a Crime but it surely reduces the impact of the film. There were 'Balgandharva' kind of vibes passing throughout teasers and trailer, obviously that film had Genius director like Ravi Jadhav though, Ani Dr Kashinath couldn't match that level yet manges to gift you a good product this Diwali with unbelievable story to tell.

RATING- 6/10*

Superb film!
rohindeshmukh19 April 2019
The casting of Subodh Bhave as the titular character is just perfect. He wins our heart with his performance. This film portrays the good and the bad shades of the legendary actor, Dr Ghanekar. But in the end, this is what makes you love him more, for he would not have been the first superstar if he didnt have grey shades.

Overall, an amazing movie after a long time in Marathi cinema. A must watch!

Ani Dr Kashinath Ghanekar is no less than a masterpiece
dhaniraichand27 November 2020
Marathi movies are art. They make masterpieces and one such beautiful movie is Ani Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar. A dentist, Dr Kashinath Ghanekar finally decides to leave his practice to pursue his passion for acting and goes on to become the first superstar of Marathi Theatre. All the actors aced their roles. Would recommend all to watch this movie, apparently present on Voot.

An Honest Biopic: Testimony to both the Talent and the Weaknesses
rtoac129 March 2021
This is a Marathi language film starring Subodh Bhave on the life of Dr Kashinath Ghanekar.

There are big lessons to be learnt, repeated over and over across history, which comes out (again) in this biopic. Admire the talents, not the human. It's a message for the celebrity loving and emulating masses across the world. These celebrities have the talents you have taken a liking to. But these superstars are most times trapped by these very talents and have forgotten what it means to be a good human.

Dr Kashinath Ghanekar was a powerhouse of a talent in acting, particularly stage acting. His life played out by by another powerhouse - Subodh Bhave. A dentist by profession, he always knew where his passion lay. Not in medical practice and not even in film acting. He played to the gallery and was the first superstar of Marathi theater.

He got money into theater and revived a dying art and fanbase. And due credit and place in history to him for that.

But he wasn't a good human. Then again, no one is perfect. But consider this: He treated fellow actors disrespectfully or without true regard, considering himself as the greatest. He was arrogant and a womanizer. And despite all interventions by well wishers who stood by him, wouldn't give up on his weakness for excessive drinking. In the end leading to the insulted audience burning up an auditorium.

Now what would you prefer having in your children. Values or Success. If the world be poorer if there weren't a Kashinath Ghanekar, the actor. Yes perhaps. But compared tohis family and friends who needed him and were let down? His fans and audiences, producers and critics who supported his rise, who were let down? To the Gods up there who gave him a rare gift that he didn't live up to? I don't think so. That, the impact on many lives including his own, is irreplaceable.

Ani... Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar Review- Suraj Menon
suraj-7557428 April 2019
Ani... Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar: Just as the title of this movie, the director depicts exactly the thrill and power of the name every time we hear with a deafening applause by the crowd. This is about the personal and professional character of the best theater artist in that era. The craze and passion of performing on stage as an actor made Dr. Kashinath pay huge prices. Very well explained on how the character gets addicted to praises from the viewers and when the time changes, the same profession takes a toll on him. Nearly a sole performance by Subodh Bhave who has nailed the character. His way of characterization just sticks in your head even after the movie. Also brilliantly accompanied by Sumeet Raghavan and Prasad Oak with stunning screen presence. There is a similar touch to the direction as that of Natsamrat which revives the contemporary Marathi stage acting. The movie has everything from struggle to the stardom and downfall to the rise. The name Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar itself had a unique, crazy, charismatic attraction which drew the crowd to the theater in any circumstances. The movie is a bit stretched and the climax is not as great as the whole script was written. Rating: 7/10
