It's a fun light hearted episode
grahammasters10 July 2020
Ok so I would understand younger people not getting some of the references. But as someone that saw 80's movies back in the 80's they did a great job. I'm liking the whole way the episodes this season are staged in the style of the time they're in.

I know earlier seasons were quite serious but it's a refreshing break to see them not taking it too seriously. Good to see them taking chances and being creative.

Oh damn!

Great episode!! It manages to balance a lot of emotion with a lot of humour. This was one of the wackiest episodes in the show, and that's not a bad thing. This episode may be the best episode of Mack and Deke as characters. Truly great episode, with lots of fun!

Can't decide if genius or shameless.
highlander_3152710 July 2020
It felt a lot like a mishmash of 80's movies. All of the 80's cliches rolled into one episode. Coulson in a Max Headroom style setup was something I did not know I needed to see. Evil robots straight out of Chopping Mall. Not a bad homage to a more innocent time.

I wanted this episode to be longer!

This was the most fun and pure joy I had watching Agents of shield with few sad moments of course because it's an AoS episode. Deke and Mack are a surprisingly fun duo, I just loved the way they worked together and how the episode helped progress both characters. Oh and shoutout to the cheesy robot kills, my favorite part!

If there was an award for most 80's references...

Warning: Spoilers
Cylons/Battlestar Gallactica, Max Headroom, The A Team, Aha!, dot-matrix printers, plastic muscle car models, floppy drives, Farrah Fawcett, turning motorized color wheel stage lights, The Breakfast Club, koozies, coke(?), huge VHS tape players, even Top Gun, scream queen movies, Rambo, Short Circuit, Speak and Spell, MacDaddy, Ms. Pac-Man, Where the Redfern Grows, along with a host of verbal phrase references! Yahoo... it's the '80's all over again!

Loved it! More Giggles and gaffaws per minute then any other episode.

But then again I lived it too. Go Deke Squad!

Mac and Deake are stuck in 1982 and after the death of his parents, Mac goes into hiding. Deake tries everything to coax Mac out of his depression. They have taken references from War Games, Battlestar Galactica, Short Circuit, Doctor Who, Rambo, Max Headroom . I'm sure I've missed a load as well. So funny.

Loved the episode, a great homage to the 80's

Warning: Spoilers
It is nice to see the writers have a place in their hearts for the movies and TV of the 80's. This episode was rammed with references to those shows and films, and filmed in such a way that really brought back memories, and made me chuckle. Robots that anyone can run or walk away from (but don't as per any 80's sci fi movie) killing people, characters using clichés left right and centre, the obligatory gore fest, computers being used for unbelievable reasons (who knows, they may do that, that's what we thought in the 80's!) and more. It was such fun to watch, and well put together by someone who knows what they're doing. Of course some of the lesser reviews are by younger people who just won't get it, or people who have no sense of nostalgia, but for me, and people like me who remember the 80's or others who like watching things from that time, I'm sure they'll love it.

Not a fan of Deke 'til now
melim-0690811 July 2020
Up until this episode, Deke was no where near my top 20 list of favorite characters. But his character has redeemed himself (some) after having a whining third wheel feel through the previous season.

As far as the 80s references go, if you don't laugh at least once then you are either too young to remember the 80s or have never watched an 80s movie in your life.

Yes a lot 80s movies are cheesy by today's standards, but you gotta love how they hit every 80s genre possible in this episode. This was truly fun to watch.

Challenging episode
jimpi11 December 2020
I really don't like how they have depicted Mac on this show. He presents himself as half-competent and kind of mean to others. He is judgmental, critical with little sense of humor. He always seems angry at someone. His depiction and his many flaws make it hard to believe in him as a leader.

1982!
rkyliuk13 July 2020
I feel behind the times because I didn't start popping my collar until 1989-90. But what this episode is, is a very comprehensive snapshot of 80s culture, to the extreme. I can't even think of a movie or cultural touchstone they left out (maybe D&D? royalties). So this episode was a frantic patchwork of 80s cliches which was done so well, you didn't even have time to absorb the story (which was good itself). I think all modern kids should watch this to understand the 80s. It's more accurate than Stranger Things and more fun!

Fun 80's references
terrylarosa9 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Short Circuit = the robots ( which Mack addressed ) side note= the word Exterminate from Dr. Who. Predator = the hand shake ( though it would have been more true to form if Mack's biceps had been exposed ). Commando = Somewhere, somehow, someone's going to pay ( line on the poster ) The Breakfast Club = the song as stated Max Headroom = Coulson on the tv. There might have been others I missed. Overall this has been a fun season. Looking forward to how they will end it.

Meh.
MamadNobari9711 July 2020
One of the weakest episode of this show and definitely the worst of the season. There was no coherence in the episode things just happened and I get that they're doing a "80's episode" and of course the comedy bits they gonna do is outdated but I still mehed and might even cringed at some cliche haha momets. At least the gore scenes and the excessive blood shower scenes was kinda funny and cool. This episode felt like it was written by some amateurs because it's nothing like the brilliant writing of previous seasons especially season 4. But hey, at least with the last scene we know the kidnapping plot line from prev episode wasn't pointless and du,mb.

Al in all I'm disappointed with this episode they kinda sacrificed substance and good material over style. Hope next episodes are good and the finale don't disappoint.

So done with Mac.
LightningB8 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Never mind the fact that I'm not sure how a robot that moves about 2 miles an hour easily catches people and kills them or the high school play-level makeup done for Womack (In previous episode) and Mac with his "aged" beard (found at Halloween store apparently) but Mac's pretentious, self-righteousness, which has been tolerable in smaller doses, becomes unbearable with him being a large focus (along with Deke) of this episode. He's just too much holier-than-thou and never makes smart or bold decisions despite how tough he Is constantly is portrayed. And it is constantly. Not sure what producers saw when making him director of SHIELD.

Anyhow I wouldn't say show is limping to the finish but it certainly has no head of steam.

Oh and am I the only one who thinks that apparently Mac grew up in Marty McFly's house?

An Absolute Treat!
joncase-4846317 October 2020
What fun. Okay, it doesn't do much for the overall plot - but that's not the point. As a teen of the 80s I found myself laughing out loud many times. It was cleverly done and thoroughly entertaining. I'm so glad they did it. They must have had soooooo much fun making this. And the main cast that didn't really feature - they must be gutted not to have been in this.

One of the worst episodes ever and I've seen all seasons...just skip to the last 5 min and watch the preview for the next one. Or rewatch episode 6 - seriously it wasn't funny, to me anyways, and it tried WAY too hard to be.

Don't You Forget About Me
tanbeer17 August 2020
Deke's singing of the iconic Breakfast Club song gave me the feels. Had to go back and watch the Breakfast Club. Classic!

That being said, this episode was a great mix of retro 80's feel, camaraderie between Mac and Deke and depth of character study of just these 2. Not to mention, nice twist for the '80s agents getting in Shield.

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but it was a clever mix of fun, timeless classic reminiscence and storytelling without stepping away too much from the series plot.

Best Episode Ever!
RevBear663 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this episode. I laughed hysterically at all the 80's references. Although I can't believe no one has referenced that this episode was an homage to that great 'so bad it's good" 80's horror flick Chopping Mall. This was my favorite episode of the season. Great writing, great laughs.

LOVED IT
teresabelle23 July 2020
This was one of my favorite episodes so far. So many things had me laughing out loud, but it was also very emotional. Felt a lot of nostalgia. I remembered things I'd forgotten about the 80's. I'm not sure what the younger generations would think of it, but THANK YOU FOR THE AWESOME EPISODE! It was great.

Episode 707
bobcobb30129 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am not crazy about the Deke character at all, but I have to say this was a fun episode. I did not even mind the long performance of "Don't You Forget About Me" and usually I cannot stand singing in TV shows. I cannot emphasize enough how much I hate episodes with karoake in them.

But this was good fun. They leaned into a lot of popular 1980's cliches, and of course with Stranger Things dominating culture right now this was a smart move. This is the kind of time bending episode that Agents of SHIELD should have been doing all season.

A lot of flaws in it still, but this was finally a fun episode.

Silly, yes, but loads of fun
wms-9274128 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Agents of Shield stopped being a serious show after season three, if one could even call it serious then. From season four forward, it has gotten a little crazier every season until now, the final season, where it's pretty clear everyone involved is simply having a good time.

This episode is absolutely chock full of 80's references and I added an additional star for the scene when one of the robots called out, in gloriously cheesy tribute to one of the greatest sci-fi shows of all time, "Exterminate!"

How could you not love this?

One side note, it turns out Jeff Ward (Deke Shaw) is a truly awful singer, unless he was that bad on purpose, in which case he's an underrated actor.

Two weak links don't make a chain
forgotten707-112 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Agents of Shield always worked, even with bad episodes, because of the ensemble. None of the actors can carry the show, but it's okay because they balance each other out as a team. But this episode takes the comic relief and the hard-line leader and tries to make a buddy episode? Fail.

The worst part is it REALLY shows how weak these two characters really are. Deke has never ever been my favorite, and I was hoping we'd be done with him. Here we see his lack of importance really shine. His most important line in the series is aptly spoken when he says "I'm a fraud". Mac is a great right hand man, and has had some excellent moments on the show, but without the others he's just not interesting enough. I found myself looking up trivia for this episode while it played because frankly it was boring.

Final season, take some risks, I get it. But c'mon, go out with a bang, don't throw everything against the wall and hope something sticks.

As an 80s parody: GREAT, as an Agents of SHIELD episode: AWFUL
witches_abroad5 October 2022
I get it, 80s vibe and fun and all, and if the goal was just to make a laughable standalone 80s parody it would fly. My problem is that this is an episode in a series that so far had a certain level of seriousness, an now turning into some parody show. Everything is way off, nonsense levels are over the roof, cheesy punchlines, cheesy everything, absurdity overload.

We already have some time travelling absurd WTF tv-series like Doctor Who or Legends of Tomorrow, both of which I gave up on after a while because I couldn't tolerate the nonsense. I would be happy to left to enjoy something else.

If you like this kind of humor, good for you. We literally hated it.

Worst episode so far
abusby-0604815 November 2020
I'm not loving season 7 at all. The characters have gone so down hill, that I will be glad to finish the series. Mack and deke are not very good characters to begin with and this episode just solidified that feeling. I get the whole 80s theme they were going for but honestly, this was just horribly written and portrayed.
