American Pie (1999)
Pale ale??
Ho ho ho. This is one of those films that makes you think "Yes, it is good to be alive, and yes, being 18 was DAMN fun." A superb film by anyone's standards, marred only perhaps in its dubious moral-soaked fables towards the end, this is definitely one to watch. The humour is toilet humour, sure, but its toilet humour dressed up in a tweed jacket and smoking a pipe, whilst listening to some good jazz.
Male or female, old or young, I recomend this film. It has some classic scenes (pie, anyone?) and some good gags. Comparable, perhaps, to Something About Mary, but tenfold funnier.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Hype-a-rama
Can we say "Hallowe'en cash in" children? Picture this: Film released in which some people go camping in the woods, get shouted at, strange things happen, find a house, film ends. Put it like that and the Blair Witch Project simplicity is revealed. Not that I'm saying this is bad - simple can be good, and to be fair, as most lines were improvised, a simple plot can be turned into a fairly realistic film. Note: fairly realistic. No documentary team, no matter HOW amateur, would take footage as shakey as some of the Blair Witch shots. OK, it's on a camcorder, but even so. The word 'overplayed' springs to mind. The same rings true with the dialogue - the arguments seem drawn out, the emotion just somehow inappropriate, and the locations are simply dull. It has its good points though: the few scary bits ARE scary, and the implied witchcraft is intriguing spooky, but as a whole the movie just seems too bland for my liking. Fair play to the people who created it, on a small budget and amateur teams, but I ain't gonna eat a cake just coz the cook is inexperienced and buys cheap ingredients. For a much classier horror, I recommend The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Mifunes sidste sang (1999)
Delightful.
Mifune is a surprisingly easy film to watch, delightful in many respects and certainly original. The comedy is in many ways unique; nothing hits you in the cinema, but you still leave with a smile on your face. The acting is, in my view, superb, the locations fitting, and the plot; well, original and refreshing. If you need cheering up or it's a rainy day then I recommend this film. Very refreshing indeed.
The Truman Show (1998)
On the air - but who cares?
A wonderful concept, highly original, but unfortunately, poorly implemented. The sets are good and Jim Carrey's as good as he ever was, though. You just feel when you leave the cinema that something was missing. No real beginning and no real end.
Mars Attacks! (1996)
Cheesy and wonderful...
With an 'ironic' release of a spoof alien invasion film not long after Independence Day, this film is a welcome breath of fresh air in the field of spoof flicks. It's subtle and possibly missable humour, when discovered, is excellent. The aliens are comic masterpieces in themselves. A wide range of characters and the funniest rendition of 'It's not unusual' I have seen (with Tom Jones himself!) are just a few of the highlights of this cheesily cheerful B-movie wannabe.
With a lot of cash spent to achieve realistic 'cheesy' FX this film is well worth seeing. If you didn't like Independence Day because of how pretentious and how 'Hollywood' it was, you'll love this.
C'est arrivé près de chez vous (1992)
It has to be seen to be believed
This is a film that most definitely will not appeal to all people. It is very extremist - detailed footage of a moral-free serial killer at work; some people will just be offended and upset by a select few of the scenes. But for those with an open mind, and a black sense of humour, this is one of the funniest and most amazing films I have ever seen. Charting the progress of a serial killer being followed by a TV crew, some scenes are stomach churningly grotesque whilst others involve a blend of sophisticated and black humour. It is this mix of comedy and obscenity that make this such a great work of art - it is a wonderful experience to watch. Take heed though - those with the wrong sense of humour or a delicate disposition should steer clear...
Bad Taste (1987)
Brains, zombies, sheep and MORE BRAINS!
This is quite an amazing film. If you like guns, gratuitous killing of the undead and lots of gore then this is most definitely the film for you. When aliens turn the townfolk into zombies, it's left to Derek and his team of "experts" to stop the malevolent army of the undead. Humour and fighting ensues, culminating in a stunning climax. Bad Taste contains the most excellent exploding-sheep scene that I have ever witnessed...
Incredibly funny and utterly unique, the film is a must see - one step above other zombie-flicks.
