Bad Samaritan (2018)
4/10
Too long and too inconsistent
2 October 2020
Don't forget this is my subjective opinion.

If you're a fan of David Tennant and have to see everything he's in, then this review won't stop you. However, if you're looking for something good to watch, look elsewhere. Riddled with inconsistencies and frustrating plot contrivances. Avoid.

Acting was good by the whole cast; the script was bad.

Plot: A thief stumbles upon something more sinister than booty which kicks off a cat and mouse situation.

I'm still not sure what the bad guy's motivations were. Many things went unexplained.

The bad guy was creepy for the sake of being creepy which ruined it for me.

Genre: More thriller than horror. Very small amount of gore.

Cinematography: Fine, never felt like things were being obscured.

Length: Personally, I wanted this movie to be over by the time the final scenes were playing.

Some scenes felt like filler as the characters were never developed. Many scenes were used just to set up stakes for the characters.

Believability: Very little. The police in this movie are incompetents who respond to burglary calls but not threats of bodily harm.

There is one scene where a car's rear is facing a garage door but the next shot has it driving forwards out (and that's not even the most ridiculous part of that scene).

Soundtrack: Not bad. Nothing that stands out personally.

Would I watch this again: No. I hope to never watch this again.

The Invisible Man (I) (2020)
7/10
Worth a watch if you're on the fence
29 August 2020
This is all my subjective opinion-

Keep your expectations in check and I think you'll have a good time if you've been tempted by any of the promotional material. If you're looking for a tense movie, not a scary one, you might enjoy this. There is some blood.

Elizabeth Moss is fantastic in this movie. I really believed that her character was being tormented.

This is NOT an adaptation of H.G. Wells' book.

Plot- The movie follows Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss) who has escaped from her abusive husband and is later tormented by the eponymous Invisible Man.

I thought that the pacing was fine, but there were some slower moments for me. I never checked my watch though or found my mind wandering to other things.

The ending felt rushed, but it wasn't bad, just ok.

Cinematography- Great. There are a couple of scenes at the beginning of the movie that really tease you. Tension is built well.

I only remember there being one jump scare.

Length- At two hours it was fine. If the ending had been fleshed out more it could've pushed it a little further.

Believability- I didn't think that stupid decisions were made, and I can't think of any damming plot holes after one viewing.

Soundtrack- Good and I might listen to some of it. I enjoyed the end credits theme.

Would I watch it again- Not anytime soon. I'll have to wait a while (forget things) to really enjoy this again.

Crimson Peak (2015)
7/10
Simple plot but worth a watch
28 August 2020
Whilst it does have its problems, I would recommend watching it and forming your own opinion if you're on the fence about this movie. It wasn't scary for me, but it was creepy. The horror is peppered throughout so didn't become stale, but I also didn't feel starved of it. I would recommend if you like the idea, just don't watch it expecting a ghost story, it just has ghosts in it.

Crimson Peak is a spooky movie about a woman (Edith) who falls in love with a mysterious man (Thomas) who is trying to restore his mining business. Thomas has a dilapidated family home which is sinking into his clay mine.

Plot- The start of the movie was its weakest point in my opinion. Thomas' appearance felt forced to begin with but in retrospect fitted with the story. I'm not a fan of lengthy time skips (few days or maybe a month) and the start of this movie had a few. This led to the romance between Thomas and Edith mostly happening offscreen and felt rushed. Once the characters arrived at Thomas' house (crimson peak) my enjoyment of the movie skyrocketed.

I personally thought that the plot was quite simple, which isn't necessarily a problem but I was left wanting to see more of the house and the characters could've been explored further, especially Thomas. There was a good explanation for the ghosts but it was done at the wrong time and this is my least favourite part of the movie and what I think is the weakest scene.

Cinematography- The way this movie looks is excellent. It's gorgeous. The only criticism I have is the weak CGI. It's not terrible, but I could tell it was CGI.

Length- I thought that it was an enjoyable length for me and it didn't outstay its welcome, just a shame it left me wanting more.

Immersion- For me, what went on was believable in the context of the movie (or depending on your beliefs regarding ghosts.) The time skips at the start hurt my ability to get really immersed, but I never looked at my watch.

Soundtrack- The music was fine and wasn't distracting. None of the tracks apart from the main theme really stood out to me.

Would I watch it again- Yes, I plan on watching it again.
