Pulp Fiction (1994)
Tarantino tries too hard.
To sum up any comments I could make, let me just say that throughout this movie that I got the impression that Tarantino wasn't the cool kid in school and desperately wanted to be cool.
I mean, lets see, its an orgy of gen-x early 20's male themes. Mobsters, guns, drug use... etc. Its just boring. Every scene screams "Hey look at me I'm cool!" Every scene screams for your attention. Tarantino tries too hard to make you pay attention to him. A truly good movie wouldn't have to use all of that to get your attention.
Orange County (2002)
Not very enjoyable.
While the acting talent seemed competent in the movie, and plot was pretty much developed; it wasn't very enjoyable.
Of course there were one or two sight-gags and 'haha I remember thats how college/high school was' but other than that it wasn't very funny or enlightening.
Perhaps I was supposed to laugh at the drugged out brother, or the two stupid friends, or the slutty cheerleader. Sorry.
Ok well I did laugh at the slutty cheerleader.
Bravo (1998)
ack.
I rented this, hoping to see another good movie with Carlos Gallardo- as with El Mariachi.
For this movie, its your run of the mill grade B quality movie. The acting is TERRIBLE, the characters are pretty empty, and I really don't see a reason why it even came out on DVD.
For El Mariachi, Carlos Gallardo was competent in acting as a shy sort of Mariachi singer who has had little or no luck. Carlos just did not play the Bravo character convincingly. I didn't feel he was a menace at all.
The villain was laughable.
But, then of course- the script was terrible so its hard to put the total blame on the actors. They were only working with what they had right?
The directing was pretty bad as well.
I think the best part of the movie was how the General got drunk. Pretty funny- but I don't think its convincing enough to rent. Maybe they knew it was a bad movie and played along.
