I simply adore this movie
18 November 2006
This film is so understated and underrated as to be in danger of completely disappearing from the radar screen. For Steve Martin to be in a non-Jerk type roll makes seeing this movie next to impossible for a great number of people. No, he's not acting weird. No, he doesn't have an arrow on his head. No, he isn't going for the laugh. This is Mr. Martin at his acting best. If you were impressed by his recent turn in 'Shopgirl' the do yourself a favor and go out of your way to find a copy of this movie. Are there times when humor finds its way into this movie? Oh yeah but for the most part there is nothing but good solid storytelling with excellent casting and an excellent script. See this movie if you want to see a wonderful character study acted out by a superb cast.

Ed Wood (1994)
10/10
weird - thank god
22 November 2004
There isn't enough weirdness of this ilk in the world. I rated this a 10 because it is perfect in its imperfection, just like Ed Wood was. Come on, the guy did 'Plan 9' for cryin' out loud. How perfectly horrible was that movie??

Landau was flawless as Bela Lugosi. Johnny Depp was his usual wonderful weird self. What is there to say about Bill Murray that hasn't already been said? Sarah Jessica Parker was brilliant as the not quite an airhead girlfriend/wife.

Frankly, I just can't find anything wrong with this movie except that it ends. I just wanted the weirdness to go on and on.

Great kid fodder
21 February 2004
Detractors will think this overly sweet but for us with toddlers (the target audience) it is a wonderful nonthreatening show. Didactic in nature, it does so without the cloying sweetness of that purple dinosaur. My two year old son loves to run around sniffing people like Bear. He dances and sings along as well. There are very few shows he watches to which he is glued. My husband and I are careful of what he watches and we are grateful that Jim Henson's vision is alive and well in Bear. Big Bird lives on in Bear. Thank you for targeting the all too often forgotten toddler population!

Shallow Hal (2001)
I REALLY wanted to hate this movie.....
24 July 2002
but I just couldn't. Being a fat chick like Rosemary I wanted to hate this movie. There were parts of it I didn't like such as portraying all fat girls like hogs at the trough. We don't all eat like there is no tomorrow. There were a few too many broken furniture gags for my taste but overall, I thought it was incredibly sensitive and kind little flick. (I'm still shaking my head over writing this review.) I really really really wanted to hate this movie. When the husband bought it home I was like, 'sure, I'll watch it but I'm gonna crack on it every chance I get...' and there weren't that many chances.

I'm not a Farely brothers fan at all. "Something about Mary" was okay but the rest of their movies are just not my cup of tea. "Shallow Hal" is not a movie I would go out and buy but I'd believe I would see it again.

Toys (1992)
10/10
You either get it or you don't
2 July 2002
This movie is one of the sweetest, most innocent movies I've ever seen. I first saw it in the theatres when it was first released and was the only person I knew that loved it. Since then, I've found a few kindred spirits who feel about it the way I do.

I believe Robin Williams knew exactly what he was doing when he made this movie and I'm grateful to him for doing so. Fables are few and far between these days. I enjoy them when I run across them.

"Toys" needs to be on DVD so I'll be able to show this movie to my son when he's old enough.
