SLC Punk! (1998)
Don't watch this.
This movie is awful. If you want to know anything about punk rock, don't watch this. That's right, you'll actually learn more about punk rock by NOT watching this. It has nothing to do with punk. With phrases like "I hate hicks", "I'm going to get a 4.0 in damage" and "I hate posers" and "Yeah! Punk rock!" come on, this is punk? This stuff is total tripe. From the outfits, to the narrating, everything is just awful. It seriously almost seems like a joke.
I can't say it's ALL bad, because if you're just watching this to be WATCHING a movie, it's not that bad. But if you're watching for the "punk rock" in it, Wow, skip it! I can't say enough bad things about it.
Watch the original Suburbia instead. or Another State of Mind. I have reviews on the site for both.
oh yeah, and... PUNK ROCK!...I guess..?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Fantastic
Here's the basic plot. Clemintine and Joel have a long, rocky relationship. Clemintine decides to get Joel erased from her memory, so Joel decides to do the same, only while Joel is in the process of the erasing, he comes back around to the really sweet, nice memories, and realizes that he wants out of the procedure. Now here's what I thought about it.
This movie is completely amazing. Totally original story and wonderful directing. Some of the best directing that i've seen in any movie. Some of the best original music too. This is in my top five favorites, and it also boosted Jim Carrey into one of my favorite actors. You know you have a good movie on your hands when the next day you're still thinking about parts of it, and you want to see those parts again. If you haven't seen this, I recommend that you check it out. It's different, in a really good way. There's not much more to tell you about it. If you want to see the Ace Ventura Jim Carrey, than you should absolutely skip this one. But if you want to see a side of him and Kate Winslet that you've never seen, or if you want to see a total original movie with wonderful cinematography and really great music, then by all means, you should absolutely see this one!
Lost in Translation (2003)
I really liked this movie.
Okay. This movie is about two very different Americans who spend a week in Tokyo. They meet up by chance on their seperate trips, and end up running around together, acting silly, having conversations, enjoying each others company, and just having a really great time. That's basically what the movie is about. And I really, really liked it. I would tell you more about the plot, but there's really not too much else to it. The "romance" between them is unsaid, but it somehow works. I don't know how, but it does. It's not un-realistic. Somehow Sofia got a chemistry and friendship between these two characters to work without it being too overblown or just downright rediculous. I wish there was more to say about it, but there really isn't! I might watch it again sometime. It' just interesting and fun and really nice to look at. And I thought this was the funniest that i've ever seen Bill Murray. I thought he was just excellent in this movie and i'd love to see him get the Oscar for it.
Oh yeah, I really liked the ending too.
Spellbound (2002)
This is really, really good.
I rented this DVD today, and absolutely loved it. I, like everyone else, wondered how on earth they could make a documentary about a spelling bee interesting...They did. This thing is just really great to watch from start to finish. Watching this, you really start to know and like these kids, and I even found myself silently cheering on 2 or three that were my favorites.
There are basically two parts to this documentary. In the first part, we are introduced to the eight kids that this documentary follows. We see their different lifestyles, their different forms of practicing, all of that stuff. (I don't think that I realized how hard all of these kids work to get to this spelling bee...It's just not something you think about, but watching this, you realize that it basically consumes their lives leading up to the championship). The next part is the actual spelling bee.
All in all, this is a really simple, fun, funny, and very interesting documentary that I think you should watch. You'll really like it.
Oh yeah, and the editing is fantastic. Watch it and you'll know what I mean.
I give it an A+
Dead Man Walking (1995)
Amazing movie...in my top 10 favorites
I won't go into the whole plot outline..basically what you need to know is that Sean Penn is on death row for murder, and Susan Sarandon becomes his spiritual advisor.
I'll start by letting you know that if you're heavily into action movies, or movies that will keep you on the edge of your seat, than I don't think that this movie will be for you, because it's mostly just talking, for about two hours. But somehow, it never gets boring. At least it never did to me. A lot of the reviews on here talk about how some of the talking parts get slow, but again, they never got dull in the slightest in my opinion. Maybe it's because Sean Penn is my favorite actor, and I love what he did with this character. I love how he played this role. and our two main characters and just interesting, and interact very well.
This movie is really a pretty simple one. But it's told in a way that you don't see in many movies. It's pretty bold in the sense that there really isn't a whole lot to it EXCEPT for the two of them talking. And most of it is shot in a way so when the camera is on one of them, you see the reflection of the other on the other side of the glass. It's like Tim Robbins really wanted you to know both of these characters.
It's also pretty interesting how this is a movie about the death penalty, but it really never does lean toward either side. It never lets you know if the person who wrote it is for or against the death penalty, it simply tells a story of a man on death row, and the nun who becomes his spiritual advisor.
I recommend this movie to pretty much anyone with an open mind. You have to come into this movie knowing what you're getting, and don't expect a lot of action, because you won't find any here...But you will get a lot of drama, and heart.
An all around great, great movie...check it out..
ps...there are a few parts in here that are pretty emotional, so if you guys are planning on watching this movie with a girl, you better have your "i have something in my eye" excuses ready...heh, wussies.
Another State of Mind (1984)
If you're into punk rock, you better check this out
I've basically watched this movie about once a year for the last 8 years or so. (Although calling it a "movie" isn't really correct...it's a documentary)
It follows around Social Distortion and Youth Brigade on tour..basically. That's the best way to put it. And at times it cuts off and shows us these kids who go to punk rock shows, and live in the street, all that stuff...that stuff gets sort of boring, but everything with the bands is funny or just good to watch.
Oh yeah, and we see some of Minor Threat in this movie, when they stay at their place...
Just check it out.
Suburbia (1983)
I love this movie
Let's set the record straight here...If you're into your average hollywood blockbuster...skip this one. (although I guess that if you're into that kind of movie, you've probably never even heard of this)
if you're like me, and grew up with punk rock, than you should check this movie out. It's a punk movie. that's all I can say. It's a good punk movie...about a bunch of punks who live in some place, and deal with things like death, parents, society, all that jazz. Just check it out, if you can find it.
Oh yeah, the acting in this movie is HORRIBLE...the bands and the shows that they go to are good....watch it now.
Taxi Driver (1976)
It is what it is...You should see it at least once.
I haven't seen this movie in about 2 years, but i'll try my best.
Here's the main points I remember about this movie...
Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) is just a weirdo. He's not really like-able...but he's not really unlike-able either...he's just some weird guy. He gets fed up and sickened with the city where he works as a late night taxi driver, and through out the movie, he just gets weirder and weirder. He ends up "saving" a young Jodie Foster, who is a prositute..but this guy isn't really a hero...just a freaky guy, who I wouldn't trust in a dark alley, or really anywhere else for that matter.
You should see it just so that you can say that you did, but it didn't do too much for me...eh, it's just Taxi Driver...Not really a "Masterpeice" at all to me.
Darkness Falls (2003)
Pretty dumb, and just silly.
I'll sum up this whole movie pretty quickly with this phrase....It's just silly.
The plot outline...Some lady kills kids when they lose their last baby tooth...The end. Why does she do it? I don't know. Why don't the cops seem to care that kids have been dying in this town at the age of 12 for the last one hundred years? It's never brought up in the movie. For the first 20 minutes of the movie, you think it's going to be really cool. It shows the main character when he was a kid, and his experience of losing his last baby tooth. That's also the first time we see "the toothfairy" in her killing stage. It's pretty spooky and really cool...but after that part, it's all downhill. I'll sum up the rest of the movie here....the main character tells everyone to stay in the light...and that's what he does for the rest of the movie. (I forgot to tell you, she can't get you if you're in the light...Duh). By the 20th time this guy shouts "Stay in the light!" you just want to yell "yeah yeah, shut up....dummy"...it gets old. The whole movie seems EXTREMELY rushed, like they were trying to a tell a 10 hour story in the course of an hour and a half. This movie just wasn't that entertaining.
The End.
oh yeah, and stay in the light...I guess.
Office Space (1999)
In my top 5 favorites...
Okay, I'll cut right to the chase...This is the funniest movie i've ever seen before in my life.
Seeing the previews for this movie, I thought it was going to be some boring, "witty" comedy for kids who like Monty Python movies. I HATE Monty Python movies, so I decided to skip it. One rainy Sunday morning, my oldest brother comes up to with the rented version of this movie in his hand, hands it to me and says, "Watch this, it's f**king hilarious." Okay, I'll give it a try...What else am I going to do on a rainy Sunday? After all, my brothers despise Monty Python and that kind of comedy just as much as I do, so I knew he wouldn't steer me in the wrong direction. An hour and a half later, and I couldn't believe how much I loved this movie, or how funny I thought it was.
I won't go into the entire plot outline, you can find that in any other review...I'll just give you a quick outline...A few guys hate their job with a passion, and decide to get back at the company...Oh yeah, and Jennifer Aniston is in it...Now go watch it, you won't regret it.
Loser (2000)
I Liked it So Much More Than I Thought I Would
Wow, a lot of the reviews for this movie on this website are really bad...I don't know why, because I LOVE this movie. I'd even go as far as to say it's in my top ten favorites.
Okay, so here we go. It all begins when I see the trailer for this movie, "those two kids from American Pie huh? This must be some kind of American Pie part two or something, and it looks stupid, i'll pass"...(I loved American Pie also, by the way), but anyways, so i'd see a preview for this movie every now and than, and just wasn't interested at all. So time passes by, and my bass player says to me, "Man I rented Loser, and you've GOT to see it! It's awesome"...and I think to myself, well, it doesn't LOOK awesome, it looks really lame. A little more time passes, and my twin brother says to me "I caught that one movie, Loser, today on HBO, it's NOTHING like I thought it was going to be, it's really really good!", so I think to myself...hmmmm..if my twin brother liked it, maybe it's really NOT what i'm picturing...maybe i'll give it a try. Well, the "try" just happened to be on a day that I took the afternoon off of work. The sun was shining, the house was quiet, and I was in high spirits. I decided that the best way for me to enjoy my day off was to open up all the windows in the living room, let the sun in, lie down on the couch, and see what's on TV....Oh, Loser is on HBO in about 20 minutes, what the heck, i'll give it a try. An hour and a half later, and I found myself a new movie to love. What do I love about it? Lot's of things..for starters, I really love the way it looks, the whole movie. It really has this "fall" season feel, which goes along PERFECTLY to the story and the scenes, and it never lets go in a single scene. The way they filmed this movie really seems to "put" you there, so to speak. You feel like you're in the dorm room with them, you're in the vet's basement with him when he moves in there, you're there when he wakes up in the morning next to his love interest, the night after the party. That's one of the main things I really liked about it, It doesn't really feel like a big blockbuster motion picture, it seems like an intimate little movie that's meant to entertain, and tell you a story. And I think it really does a good job at that.
If you read all the bad reviews about this movie, and decide to not give it a try, I suggest you go ahead and give it a try anyway, you might be suprised, like I was. I think this movie got so much bad press because #1: This movie isn't going to change your life, and it isn't going to make you see things differently. #2, action is not going to jump out of the screen and suck you in this movie, you'll find no special effects here. If you like your movies simple, and easy, than this may just be for you.
It's billed mostly as a "comedy", but I don't really consider it a comedy at all. I don't consider it a drama either....I consider it a nice movie, that's nice to look at, and nice to watch. Like I said before, It's not going to change your life......But it WILL entertain and tell you a good story about some likable characters.
The End.
Gummo (1997)
Forget that artsy stuff, this is just boring.
You'll hear the kids on here talk about the "impact" of this movie, and you'll hear the lame kids talking about how you have to "see through to the inner shell of the work"..well, here's what I see...
Ugly kids doing ugly things.
End of movie.
Seriously, I watched this movie, because I had read SOO much about it, not seeing it was beginning to torment me, I HAD to see it..so screw it, I went and rented it, and watched the whole thing...Do I regret watching it, No, I don't..Am I "Glad" that I finally saw it? No, not really. Most of this movie, let's say 98.5 % of it, is so boring that it's kind of like sitting on your couch, and just sitting there..on your couch.. I mean BORING..the rest is, is just sort of ugly.
Gummo = boring, unrealistic, not really all that entertaining.
But boy oh boy do I want to see it again for some reason!
Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)
It's just not the same.
Simply put, I was VERY disappointed in this movie. I didn't want to be, but wow, I just was. Really, I don't know if they COULD have out down the first two, but it seems here that they didn't even try. It's flat, dark, and dry.
To start things off, I can't say how disappointed I was in Dr. Evil in this movie. In the first two movies, he was so amazingly funny, every word he said was laugh out loud funny, it became part of his character. What in the HELL happened to him in this third one?? Honestly, It seems like Mike Meyers forgot how to make him funny. He doesn't talk like Dr. Evil, he doesn't act like Dr. Evil, and he doesn't even look like Dr. Evil. Maybe i'm being a little harsh here on this fact, because I thought the Dr. Evil in the first two movies was SO funny, that he was really the only reason I was so excited to see this movie. I was just disappointed. Really, it's just Mike Meyers wearing a big nose in this one. It's just flat. (And did anyone else notice how Dr. Evil's eyes were glowing bright blue in this one, not that it matters, it was just weird). Where has Dr. Evil gone?! What has happened to him, I hope they find out, and bring back the REAL Dr.Evil for the next one. Now that i've vented my anger at the un-funniness of him in this movie, I'll move on.
In the second installment, they started to repeat the same jokes from the first one, and it got kind of repetative and annoying, in this third installment, it's just down right rediculous. Why are they STILL doing the gag when Frow yells her directions so loudly, that everyone else jumps in fright. I didn't think that was all that funny in the first one, and after doing it so many times in ALL three movies, it's just humiliating now. Also, the gag when Scott is trying to talk, and Dr. Evil won't let him, if you've seen the movies, you know what I mean, it was classic in the first one. Just great in the second one, and it WOULD be funny in the third one, but like I stated above, it's just not the same Dr. Evil that i've grown to know and love. And we're just waiting for it to happen. I felt that way through most of this movie. I was just waiting for the jokes that I KNEW were coming, and they always came. There was nothing new.
Don't get me wrong, I did laugh two or three times in this movie, but for the most part, it was just kind of embarrassing. I still love Mike Meyers, I just think they tried, and missed the mark with this movie. He should give us one more, and really give it a punch, like in the first two.
All in all, dissapointing.
Deuces Wild (2002)
biggest dissapointment of the year.
when i started seeing the previews for this movie on tv, i was REALLY pumped up to see it, i love anything having to do with the 50's, and it looked GREAT...it wasn't..at all.
here is a brief plot outline..2 groups of kids live across the street from each other. the deuces and the vipers. they dont like each other. they fight. the end. there are no likable characters on either side, and i didn't care what happened to any of them. before i say what was wrong with the movie, i'll say what i liked about it. right from the get-go, durring the opening credits, you knew that this was a different kind of movie..and a much darker movie than i was expecting. i will say that they don't make many movies that look like this, or have this kind of feel to them. i thought they did an outstanding job protraying that time period, that was a big plus. the other plus was that that one kid..brad renfro, his acting was real top notch in this movie. very good. but again, didnt care about his character or what happened to him. just not likeable. there are no good guys or bad guys in this movie, well i suppose the deuces are supposed to be the "good" guys..but they don't do anything good. the fight scenes are really good, but the lighting is soo dark during them that you can't tell at all who's winning or losing. it's just some kids fighting. not being able to see who just got punched in the face got really annoying by the 3rd or so fight scene. there isnt too much to tell about this movie. it's really boring, and really dissapointing. like i said before, full of unlikable characters who fight each other. i never got tired of the fight scenes, but i could have gone without seeing that one kids arm get busted in THAT much detail. all in all, you can skip this movie. you'll probably still watch it out of curiousity after reading this, but after you do, you'll be telling your friends to skip it also.
