Cheers (1982–1993)
8/10
Consistent comedy- a few issues though
15 March 2024
Towards the end of 2023 I finally got Paramount + and watched Frasier. I had ever seen an episode of Frasier ever and thoroughly enjoyed it The logical step would then be watch Cheers, OK I maybe should have watched Cheers first but hey ho. I had also never seen an episode of Cheers, even though both programmes are mainstays of British TV programming Over all Cheers was good, consistently funny without being brilliant laugh out loud comedy. Felt more like a warm hug on a cold night, comfort TV.

Personally I found Frasier to be funnier.

Which era is best the Diane years or Rebecca years. Is there a better era. I thinks so. I prefer the Diane era Cheers, she seems to be more involoved in the plot lines, a real main character. With rebecca I felt that her role was a lot less involoved. All she seems to do is sit at the bar and flick through receipts Nicolas Colasantos as Coach is by far the best character on the show. His comic timing, facial expressions are priceless. He makes the role look effortless, a total professional. It was such a sad loss when he was taken so young.

Woody character has his moments but I feel it was too forced. They were ting to replace Coach character with one with similar traits, but for me it did not work Norm is a bit one dimensional, drink beer, dont go home to wife. He did however have some great one liners as he walked into bar Cliff started to grate on me after a few seasons Frasier seems to be a completley different character to the one that went on to star in his own series. I certainly prefer solo Frasier Carla is a riot, a real pocket rocket with a wicked line in put downs and one liners And so to me what is the elephant in the room. Sam Malone. He is overtly sexual, makes constant degarding remarks to both Diane and Rebecca. Sexually harrases them constantly, cheered on by the 3 stooges at bar, Norm, Cliff and Frasier. Now that sort of behaviour may have been accepted back in 1980'/90's. But looking at it now it may be a bit uncomfortable today to watch. Sam would certainly not get away with his behavious now in 2024.

Cheers and Sam in particular was maybe a comedy show of its time, Rightly or wrongly people found his behaviour acceptable back then.

Fifth Gear (2002– )
8/10
I aint Top Gear, but is it better
25 January 2024
Recently started watching Fifth Gear when I noticed it was available on Prime, well from season 12 onwards.

Thoroughly enjoying it though it does have a couple of minor irritations.

My main gripes are are around the filming of the cars as they test them/ race them. The camera work is too frantic changing shots every 2 seconds or thereabouts, perhaps to give a feeling of exitement. Does not work for me, I end up feeling dizzy.

Usually music in background of said test, as presenter is talking. Its too intrusive and at times difficult to hear presenter Biggest gripe though is quality of filming. Its way too dark, especially at outdoor scenes

On the plus side its snappy. Runs for approx 25 minutes and during that time usually 4 segments of around 5/6 minutes each meaning it does not drag on.

Presenters are great, Vicki, Tiff and Jason are bona fide racing drivers and there seems to be a great chemistry and rivalry between them, friendly of course Other presenters I have seen are Jonny Smith and Tom Ford, seasoned car journolists who know there stuff.

It was always going to be compared to Top Gear, but Fifth Gear is more down to earth. Not every segment revolves around super or hyper cars, like Top Gear does. Plenty of cars featured that many people actually have and can afford. Plenty of decent items on things like car safety. They do however still have time to mess around so its not all serious all the time

More of a car show where cars are the stars, unlike Top Gear which is more of an entertaimment show, with the hosts being the stars.

Dont waste your time or money
10 November 2023
I have been watching all of the Bond movies in order on Prime. Boy is it hard going Sean Connery ones are over rated and very much of their time. Sexist, racist, mysoginistic. Roger Moore merely continues more of the same but with a feminine touch, he is so camp Of its time, the fight scenes were poor, the stunts just as bad.

I know its a Bond film and you have to take your brain out and enjoy it for waht it is but this is beyond parody But TSWLM takes things to a new level with the calibre of acting. Moore is soo camp he would would give Butlins a run for their money. Barbara Bach is beautiful however she is more wooden than a shop full of planks.

The Jaws character is just stupidity personified , dont worry he gets even worse in Moonraker The plot what little there is of it is basically a rehash of most of the other plots from earlier films.

Camera work and scenry is overall decent, title song arguably one of the best bond songs Only 4 stars and that is mainly for the song and the scenery. If you are watching for even half decent acting give this wide berth. Barbara Bach is simply beyond dreadful Its amazing that in about 10 years when Timothy Talton took over the marked increase in standard between fight scenes and the stunts.

What a waste of talent
10 June 2023
Cards on the table, I am a huge fan of Gene Wilder movies I originally saw the movie back in the 80's when I was just a young lad and seemed to remember enjoying it. Possibly because of Kelly LeBrock Finally saw it again last night on Freevee and it was very disappointing to say the least Laughs are few and far between. Sound track is good and of course Kelly LeBrock is rather beautiful. BUT she could not act her way out of a paperbag. She is soooo wooden throughout the film.

Gilda Radner on the other hand is a decent actress however she is totally underused in the film Some films are best left as fond memeries from years gone by and this falls into this category.

Think I need to go and watch See no evil, Hear no evil to remind myself how funny Gene Wilder can be.

Doc Martin (2004–2022)
8/10
Quality acting and a strong cast
12 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Dr Ellingham, never Doc Martin, was a top London surgeon who suddenly developed a phobia of blood, not much good if you are a surgeon.

He relocates to a quiet Cornish village, where he spent his summers with his Aunt Joan the wonderful Stephanie Cole and becomes the villages GP

The doctor is very socially awkward, very blunt and forthright and has a total lack of a bedside manner. I would say he must be on the spectrum for Aspergers. Very similar traits to Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory

He is however a brilliant GP and diagnoses a whole host of ailments from the local characters

The love interest is provided by the local school teacher then head mistress Caroline Catz who is the complete opposite of the DR. But hey opposites attract??

There are plenty of regular characters which give a homely feel to the show Definteley must see TV in our household. Switch on for an hour and enjoy the glorious scenery and the stories.

My only real gripe is the recurring character of the local policeman. It the first 2 seasons he is just a bit awkward and socially inept like the DR. He is however replaced by a new policeman from season 3 on, and he is just a complete idiot, a charicature in fact. He is so over the top and dense and annoying its just not funny.

Gorky Park (1983)

Reverend I. M. Jolly goes to Moscow
25 September 2022
Whover the casting agent for this film was they may want to consider a career change

If you lived in Glasgow or West of Scotland during the 1960 through to 1990's, you will know Rikki Fulton as part of a music hall double act Francie and Josie or as numerous comdey characters in the annual Scotch and Wry, comdedy sketch show. He is west of Scotlands national comedian treasure. His best known comedy character is the mournful and depressed Reverend I. M Jolly. If you have time check out Reverend I. M. Jolly on youtube

In this film however he is a top KGB officer. I am sorry if you had ever seen any of his Scottish characters you could not possibly take him seriously in this role.

Alexei Sayle is a. British alternative comedian , mainly well known in the mid 80's as an anarchist style comedian. As a Russian second hand car salesman he goes into almost full Alexei Sayle style speech at one point. Again you cannot take him seriously

Apart from those 2 the whole cast just feels wrong with their accents, apart from the wonderful Brian Denehey and Lee Marvin, who is surprisingly good as the bad guy

The pace of the film is a little plodding and the scenes of 1980's Moscow do look a little grim, although it was filmed in Helsinki

Hurt's acting is strong although the faux British accent make it seem very strange. His relationship with Irina, Joanna Pacula is a little strange. Sleeps with her once then declares his love for her in following scenes.

Overall not a bad film if you can get past the accents and if you have no idea who Rikki Fulton is.

Mike & Molly (2010–2016)
8/10
Very funny sitcom--great supporting cast
12 September 2022
Now just finished with seasons 1 to 3 and loved every minute of them. Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy as the leads both of whom are overweight. The supporting cast of characters, mainly Mike's cop buddy, Carl and Samuel do tend to take the mickey out of Mike about his weight, but it is done in a fun way and never malicious

Talking of supporting characters, Molly;s mother, is a wise cracking, wine swilling woman trying to live young. Molly's sister is almost permanently stoned stunner, with fantastic facial expressions and her innocence is very endearing, and her comic timing is excellent

Mike's mother is a hardend old battleaxe with never a nice work to say about anyone, except Mike and her beloved dog, Jim. Her cutting remarks and one liners are hiarious

Mike's copy buddy partner, Carl lives with his grandmother, the wonderful Cleo King. Like the other women in the cast she is given the best lines. The way she puts down her grandson with her quick wit, is always funny but never meant in a hurtful way.

Overall in the first 3 seasons there are always plenty of belly laughs. People need to take a chill pill and enjoy the programme for waht it is. 20 minutes of fun and sharp wit. Well written and consistently funny.

Jessica Simpson is basically playing Jessica Simpson As long as you dont have to pay to see this movie and you have a spare 90 minutes or so, that is probably the only circumstances to see this movie.

The IT Crowd: The Speech (2008)
Season 3, Episode 4

The funniest episode of IT crowd
13 November 2021
This is real laugh out loud funny. Jen's face when they show her "the internet" is hilarious.

As to those reviewers who found the episode trans phobic, seriously people lighten up, stop confusing Linehans own views and watch the episode for what it is, a a genuinely funny episode.

Stop looking to be offended and switch off brain and enjoy.

Still Game (2002–2019)
7/10
Starts off on a high, great till season 6 then mainly downhill
27 December 2020
I am perhaps lucky that I grew up, and live near to where the show is based, Glasgow. So I have no issues with the accent and pretty much that is the way many around this area speak. My only gripe is the overuse of swear words, to try and get a cheap laugh. Not necessary guys the show is funny enough without that. After a slowish start, as with most sitcoms, as we get to know the characters, the show is on a steep incline in terms of laughs and quality. First 6 seasons are very good and as good a comedy as you get anywhere. The 2 main actors had a bit of falling out, I believe, which is why there is a big gap between season 6 and 7. They patched up their differences, had huge sell out tours in 2014 and brought back the show in 2016. There are some decent episodes in season 7, 8 and 9 but generally the quality took a nose dive, like many sitcoms that outstayed their welcome Last episode is very poignant, which leaves the viewers to decide for themselves the ending, Some memorable characters, Naveed, and his wife, Isa, Tam and Winston

Cougar Town (2009–2015)

Rinse and repeat
17 August 2020
Currently watching this on Netflix and have now watched season 1 and half way through season 2 It has its moments, not hysterically funny, more amusing, a gentle watch you could drop into anytime A collection of mainly middle aged friends, middle class living in a quiet cul de sac in a posh part of Florida Every episode seems to consist of the same thing. Courtney Cox tries to look hot and she does. Busy ( or should that be Busty) Phillips shows plenty of cleavage. Courtney's character, Jules, drinks wine, lots of it Jules wears about 5 different outfits per show and never wears the same thing twice, ever.

Best character is the ditzy and vulnerable Laurie (Busy Phillips) who has some wonderful one liners. The love/hate relationship with Jules best friend Ellie and Laurie, is the funniest part of the show.

Every episode is the title of a Tom Petty song

Worth watching but hopefully it will progress beyond the same premise

Watching (1987–1993)

Hilarious comedy--why is this never repeated
7 December 2018
I can remember watching this when it first came out late 80's early 90's and thought it was funny

I waited for years for box set to come out and boy was it worth the wait. Much funnier than I can remember. Not only is it funny but it is consistently funny throughout the full 7 season.

It is the story of a shy birdwatcher, smothered by his mother, Malcolm and a street wise cracking, ball of dynamite Brenda and their of on off relationship throughout the years. The writing is fantastic, brilliant observational comedy by the wonderful Jim Hitchmough

Over the series the characters are well developed, lovable and realistic. there is a tremendous supporting cast, Liza Tarbuck, Patsy Byrne (nursey in Blackadder) John Bowler and the delightful Elizabeth Spriggs. There are regular characters who appear in the pub and cafe including the short sighted barman Harold and the wonderful deadpan Oswald, played with expert craft by Dave Dutton.

There are many moments of genuine laugh out loud comedy mainly from the acid tongued Brenda, with her witty one liners and put downs. There is however a genuine warmth with the characters and plenty of tugging at heart strings moments, especially in the Episode SLIPPING. It never gets overly sentimental though

Good comedy is all about the writing and the ability of the actors to deliver the lines they are given. The comedy timing of the actors is spot on, particularly Brenda and Oswald. It is one of the few comedy sitcoms that relies entirely on the characters and the situations they find themselves in. Good family fun for everyone with no swearing or smuttty jokes, they are not needed

In seasons 5-7 Brendas mother is introduced and if I thought Brenda was hilarious, her mother takes it to a whole new level. Scatterbrained does not even come close

It is also good to look back maybe with embarrassment at some of the fashions of the time, which is maybe the only thing that dates the programme

This was ITV longest running sitcom, so why it is never repeated is beyond me, and in UK we are lumbered with constant repeats of the same old same old sitcoms again and again

Do yourself a favour, buy this on DVD you will not be disappointed.
