Love of Life (1951–1980)
So Bad It's Good? More Bad. Good? Nonexistent.
1 October 2003
My mother watched this show, and she said it was abysmally bad. Like Crossroads in England, this show was so-bad-it's-good. The show had a very vocal fan following, albeit small, and that's why it stayed on the air as long as it did. The show was critically derided, and almost always at the bottom of the ratings. But still, it chugged on, for almost 30 years, because of its fans. Needless to say, my mother was not a fan.

Coronation Street (1960– )
Good show, but not the longest-running soap like some claim.
23 June 2003
A poster before me said:

"As far as I can make out, this has been on air for longer than any other soap in the world, and so I guess that makes William Roache (Ken Barlow) the longest continuously-serving actor in the world..."

This is not true. The Guiding Light started on the radio in 1937 and premiered on TV in 1952. As The World Turns started on TV in 1956. Although these shows air in the United States, and British viewers either don't know about American soaps or choose to ignore them, they have been running longer than Coronation Street. Also, there are soap actors who have been on TV for about as long or longer than Roache.

Don Hastings (who plays Bob Hughes on As The World Turns) debuted in 1960. Eileen Fulton (who plays the often-married Lisa on ATWT) also debuted in 1960. However, Helen Wagner (who plays Hughes matriarch Nancy) has been in the role since As The World Turns first aired in 1956.

With that said, Coronation Street is a very enjoyable show. Before the CBC went digital, I watched for about five years. I was very saddened to hear that Amanda Barrie's character Alma died. Too bad Deirdre and Gail couldn't have done the same.
