L.A. Confidential (1997)
Simply a great movie!
This is a detective story/murder mystery/that is so well written,so superbly acted and so masterfully directed it is almost like a meal that is so delicious you are unable to stop eating, even though you are full! It is so good that I recommend it without any details because they should be discovered by the viewer for themselves. It is truly a movie like they used to always make in Hollywood. The story is multi layered and full of interlocking subplots that flow and play out with such clarity, you are almost depressed when the movie ends, because you simply don't want it to end! If you want to watch acting the way it was meant to be done, I highly recommend this for both men and women to enjoy.
Maid in Manhattan (2002)
Different movie but the same Jennifer Lopez
It is really not necessary to see this Lopez flick if you have seen any one of her other movies! She doesn't play characters similar to one another, she plays the SAME character in all of her films. Poor struggling girl meets handsome rich guy while she pretends to be someone she is not. Rich guy finds out the truth but doesn't care that he was deceived because of course HE LOVES HER(YAWN)! Ralph Fiennes is believable as the rich handsome politician because unlike Lopez, he can actually ACT! The only people I would recommend this movie to are Jennifer Lopez fans only because of the fact that they obviously don't mind that she can't sing, so they will not care that she can't act either!
Cop Land (1997)
Art Imitates Life
This is a good movie who's only downside is the pain of watching Sylvester Stallone attempt to stand toe to toe with some of the greatest leading and character actors ever assembled in one movie! Like his character, small town sheriff Freddy Heflin who struggles to feel like a real cop among his NYPD friends, Stallone seems to be going through the same struggle as an actor against the likes of Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert DeNiro....and his limited acting ability is all too evident. When he is injured near the end of the film, his attempt to convey pain and rage look all the world like his over acting in the last rounds of all his Rocky movies. I mean, when Robert DeNiro can make a scene of him fixing himself a cup of coffee more believable than Stallones big moment, you know that the man is in way over his head>
The Godfather Part III (1990)
An idea that should never have left Coppola's head!
This movie is so bad I don't even know where to begin. The best way I can describe Godfather3 is that it seems like Frances Ford Coppola had the perfect recipe for making great movies, and what came out of the oven was Godfather and Godfather Part 2. He obviously lost the recipe for good movies and tried to copy the recipe from memory, and like most cooks who try that, ended up with a lot of missing ingredients resulting in a tasteless mess! Al Pacino is so bad in this movie, that it is hard to believe he was the actor who portrayed Michael in the first 2 films! From his new wave spiked hair(unbelievable because the Michael from 1 and 2 would have been too old fashioned for a new doo) to the recycled dialogue(re inserted ver batem to fit scenes in this movie). A lame story, miscasting, and god awful acting pretty much sums up this rancid piece of garbage! Sophia Coppola was truly bad in this movie, but at least she can say she had never acted before! What is Pacino's excuse, because he was equally bad! My advice would be to definitely rent 1 and 2 and forget 3 was ever made!
The Untouchables (1987)
Fun to watch as long as Connery and Deniro are in the scene.
The first problem with this kind of movie is that it takes real people and then tells a story that is pure fiction. The second problem is having Kevin Costner as the star of the film, thus taking up the most screen time with his usual one dimensional acting. If there was ever a poster boy for actors who play the same person in every film, Costner is it! The most fun you will have is watching Sean Connery as the tough Irish Chicago cop 'Malone', and Robert Deniro as Al Capone is the acting equivalent of poetry in motion! If you are a history buff and know the true story of Eliot Ness, I doubt you will be able to put aside the poetic license of the film maker enough to enjoy this movie.
