Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
I'm not reviewing this movie movie review.
Been done. One too many times. Want to read a good one, scroll down to "lasttimeisawit"'s review. I'm just going to say, feeling bad about YOUR dysfunctional family ? Watch this little tale and feel better, or at least not alone. This is a real "Murican" story. Now not all of us can go see the Broadway play, unfiltered and unmolested. So this is what we have. The movie. And it's a great one. Nominated for six little gold statues, but beat out on almost every count by "Gigi". Well, maybe "Gigi" deserved them all, and maybe not. We all know how political that scene can be. One more thing: read the trivia. Liz Taylor's husband died the day before filming began. She carried on, went to work and delivered an Oscar worthy performance in spite of the shock/ grief. Not to mention Paul Newman, Burl Ives ( who I now know named names !).
Anyway, this is an amazing piece of film.
The Tree of Life (2011)
There are not enough reviews for this film....
And this one is for the folks who sort by (most recent) review date. First, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there was at least one adventurous movie goer who ingested some hallucinogenic substance or other about a half hour before going to the theatre to see this and had their mind blown ( not that I ever did that when I was young and adventurous !). So here I am watching this for the second time in a row with my ninety nine year old dad on one of the movie channels, and I can say without hesitation that if you are a care giver who likes to fill the idle time (between being needed by an elderly parent ) with movies and you've seen all the others at least a dozen times, definitely give this a go. It's also great for those of us who only see snippets of movies at a time and have to watch at least six times to see the whole thing. The music also makes it a winner just to have on in the background while preparing meals. I think I'll have to buy the extended cut DVD and just put it on endless loop. Let me finish by just saying that no, this film is not for everybody, but it is a very well made film. Your results may vary.
Wetlands (2017)
Haven't even watched the whole thing, but it's gritty enough...
Better than a lot of drek being peddled. Crime drama. Nuff said.
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Worth watching for at least five minutes for the opening ski stunt....
...and the nekked women in silhouette in the opening credits. But back to that opening ski stunt. Our intrepid stuntman almost bought the farm when one of the skis he takes off tries to foul his chute. Bad form old boy ! Should have kept them on. But I'm sure that was scripted all the way, so what are you gonna do when the director says "take the skis off BEFORE you pull the cord". What's he going to do AFTER he lands, hike the rest of the way down the mountain ? Hindsight is always 20/20, right ?
Anaconda (1997)
I managed to avoid this movie until tonight......
I had never read a review, or watched a trailer. How is that possible ? Ok, I it's because I read the synopsis. I decided to watch it because I've seen every movie on the movie channels at least a half dozen times already, and it was just starting. So yes, I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel. As I'm typing, I keep thinking I'm hearing Al Pacino's Tony Montanna....but no, it's John Voight. Reading the reviews here WHILE watching the movie make it somewhat enjoyable. It does qualify as a schlock fest. Enjoy.h
Beyond White Space (2018)
CRABS IN SPAY-Y-Y-Y-S-U-H
If these crabs here was to get in your pants, I reckon it be powerful itchy. It's comforting to know they are still making crappy space based monster movies. Even though all is not right with the world, writers, directors and actors are still working and pumping out drek.
Freeway (1996)
I think we can rate this a cult classic.
Every time I watch this flick, I find more to laugh at. If I can sum it up in one sentence : Trailer trash makes good. If you have never seen it and you are offended by things like foul language, violence, and Reese Witherspoon as a powerful female whose willing to kick ass against all comers, then this movie is not for you. Otherwise, enjoy. Wouldn't hurt to have a couple of adult beverages, etc. under your belt beforehand.
The Virginian: The Modoc Kid (1967)
Wow ! First to review this episode...
The old man likes the westerns, so that's what we're watching. First I recognized John Saxon, then, low and behold, it's one Harrison Ford in one of his first credited roles ! What a treat. I don't really care much for the westerns, except for Blazing Saddles, Three Amigos, oh, and the original Beguiled (not really a western) and maybe High Plains Drifter, and maybe a few others....but these early TV sagas provided pay checks for a lot of actors, and you can see some nice antiques in the background. So check it out. Who knew Harrison Ford was ever that young !
The Mountain Lion and Me (2018)
All I can say is Wow !
Mr Anderson put an amazing amount of time and effort into making this doc about a mountain lion and her kits. I happened to flip to this about twenty minutes in and will no doubt try to catch it from the beginning next time. These big beautiful scary cats are amazing predators. Thank you for making the effort to bring this to T.V. sir !
Well done.
Searching for Sugar Man (2012)
I really don't get the hate.
This is a great story. Based on a real human life. The man wrote some great songs. So he was not as popular as Bob. He was an unappreciated artist here in 'merica, but obviously much appreciated elsewhere. Thank you mr.Sixto. Thank you mr. Film makers. I appreciate everything about this story. All you critics can just feck off.much love to you and yours, mr. Rodriguez.
The Sign (2017)
People believe what they want....
It doesn't really matter who or what the "doc" presents to us because we all bring our prejudices along and edit on the fly, so to speak. The things we agree with are met with "oh yeah, that's so true". The things we disagree with, or don't believe in we say " oh that's just B.S.
Witness : A.T&T Entertainment production,"The Sign". This "doc" gives copious amounts of time to modern day soothsayers of doom. These people believe fervently in Old Testament prophesy. It also gives much rime to amateur cosmologists/ astronomers who also predict the future (read doom). They also give a little time to scientists, and skeptics. Thank Science ! ( joke). Watch at your own risk of sanity/ comfort level. Your results may vary.
The Putin Interviews (2017)
If the world is a chess game, we are in deep doo doo.
That's the feeling I have after watching Oliver Stone's marathon (4 hrs.) series of interviews with Vladimir Putin on Showtime. I'll have to watch it all again. It's way too much to take in the first time around ( at least for me). That is due in part to the subtitles, but also the sheer volume of information imparted. The main impression I got is that Mr. Putin is one very intelligent man, a consummate statesman and a patriot. Another is that the man seems very reserved. I think that is a good quality to have when you are at the helm of a nuclear armed country. One thing I learned for sure is that my own ignorance of other cultures and Russia in particular is just stunning. So I'll thank Mr. Stone for this effort towards greater understanding of our neighbors on the other side of the world and ideological fence.
**** SPOILER *****
One part that made me cringe tho, was when he convinced Mr. Putin to watch "Dr. Strangelove". Even though I liked the movie as a cautionary tale about the danger of nuclear war being initiated by a rogue general, I don't think the humor translated too well. This may have more to do with my own experiences recommending movies that fell flat than anything else. Mr. Putin made some comment about the technical accuracy of the movie. OK, that's my 2c.
Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)
Red Room, RED ROOM !
First let me say I'm a Lynch fan from way back. Eraserhead anyone ? Some folks just like the weird. The DGF and I watched Twin Peaks back in the day, and she'd get so freaked out by Bob, she couldn't watch. T.P. was like a soap opera on acid. Judging from last night's premier, Mr. Lynch dropped the soap and the opera in favor of plain ol' acid. As in what a trip. Made no sense whatsoever. But some of us like it that way. I enjoy the imagery and the soundscapes he creates. Seeing the (surviving) cast members who came back for this new installment was fun as well. There's also some new characters, my favorite being the "arm". Have to see that for yourself. The David Lynch universe is not for everyone. Visit at your own risk. Your results may vary.
Bang Bang Baby (2014)
You're from Can- ah-dah, not you are ? SPOILERS ABOUND !
So what can you do with a million dollars ? ( Is that a million Candian, or U.S. ? And which one is worth more ?) Why, you can make a movie, Red ! Green light that project, and while you're at it make it a musical. I disagree with the other reviewer about this having a Lynchian feel to it. I think it has more of a Steve Buscemi feel. Isn't he the one who made all those nutty movies with Divine and Ricki Lake in them ? And speaking of Steve B. I've become a bit of a Peter Stormare fan ever since I saw Fargo 46 times. OK, so can I rec this film ? Well, if you're a 58 yr. old recovering alcoholic procrastinating doing the house cleaning in your 90 + yr.old parents house on a Sunday morning and you've seen everything else on HBO ten times or more then yes, absolutely watch this inspiring musical comedy ( Not that that is this reviewers situation....I know a guy who's living in a situation like that. Really. )
The Revenant (2015)
many many spoilers....
Ten of Ten I say..... What can I say ? This Movie really moved me. Was the most different out of doors movie i have ever seen in my life. I really really liked the snowy scenes. Only Meru was better for snowy scenes. Tom Hardy was really really good in this film. Tom Hardy was really really good on "The Drop" too. I think everyone should treat everyone else better . Then people wouldn't have to cheat or kill each other We really really need to start taking good care of each other and the planet if we are to save the planet and species. . We all want to sur I've, but it shouldn't be at the expense of other species or the planet. Best,
Ransom for a Dead Man (1971)
For the MD 500 helicopter fans...
Our favorite helicopter makes an appearance in this episode when the killer lawyer lady makes the ransom "drop" from her private airplane (a Piper, I believe). Although brief, we get to see (and hear) a 500C model start up, fly and land as the police follow said murderer to the drop zone. Most of the time when these buzz saws of the skies are shown in movies they dub in the more familiar, say CH53 "choppa choppa choppa" sound most people expect . Fortunately the sound people did not trouble themselves in this instance. Even though the appearance is brief, it is always a treat when a 500 shows up. Of course, if you just can't get enough MD500 there's always Magnum P.I. reruns, or YouTube. Enjoy !
Stalker (1979)
Best Russian sidecar/railway car/ existential film EVER !
If you are a deep thinker AND you like foreign films in the native language w/your favorite subtitles, you may like this film. From the two tone brown and white beginning, to the color parts, and back, this movies delivers. Starting in an industrial grunge nightmare "normal waking reality",the guide takes two clients "out of town" and into the "wild". I cared about all three principal characters. They were dribnking guys just like me. They are searching for an alternate reality where your dreams come true. One client is a scientist and one is a journalist, each looking to experience the "zone". It is more about dialogue than effects, but the cinna is great. I am going to try to buy six copies at least for xmas pressies.
Mùi du du xanh (1993)
Chick flick ? Or not
The DG picked this one, then I ended up watching it by myself. I knew going in it was a chick flick, but w/o her I was able to watch it w/o personal censure. I cried, but it is not a "sad" story. If you like foreign films and listening to foreign languages while watching a movie that gives a peek into another culture, then this is one of the best movies ever made. I will buy this movie on disc for sure. Spoiler: there is no nudity, violence or cursing. There is however, stunning camera work and imagery. O.K. I'm not being long winded enough for a review. Seems I'll have to add to it. Unlike other reviewers who shall not be named, I enjoyed the interactions between the principal character of the movie and the "little sh*t". Everyone knows the world over that little boys are "little sh*ts", and little girls are the ones who do all the work. This is a very deep story. If you didn't get it you are either too stoopid, or too sexist.
