Stupid but heartwarming
4 March 2024
The movie is no masterpiece. It's cheesy and silly, but it never claims to be anything but. It has some legitimate heart inside of it, and if it's 2 am and you're in a certain mood it might connect. If I was drunk and lonely in a motel in Nebraska I would be in love. Melissa Joan Hart is cute and Grenier plays his role exactly as needed. Again, if I owned a home with a pool, and there was nobody swimming, I had leftovers for dinner, and it was getting cold outside this movie would work. This is the kind of movie you're watching and halfway through, your roommate walks in and asks why the hell you're watching "Drive Me Crazy" and you really have no good reason. But you can say you've seen it, and it actually works.

This is not a classic
28 July 2023
Don't be tricked; this is not a classic western. Whoever is preaching it to be must be deluded. The movie is silly but unfunny, the songs dated, the scenes disjointed. The characters I guess would be charming if it was 1969 but it isn't anymore. The bicycle scene is so hilariously bad. The Western is the greatest genre in cinema and this makes a laughing stock of it. The only thing going for it is the beautiful shots of American landscapes; but other westerns have done more and been lauded less.

Usually Paul Newman is great, usually Redford is too. Watch Cool Hand Luke instead or Jeremiah Johnson. If you want to see them together watch the Sting. Skip this and don't trust people who recommend it.

Eastbound & Down (2009–2013)

The Beauty and Absurdity of Life
23 May 2023
Eastbound and Down is made with love. It loves the people and places that make this country what it is. Its appeal is taking small town life and making it an absurd hilarious battle. Remember back in high school when little insignificant events meant so much to you? That's Eastbound and Down. Eastbound makes life so grand. The villains of the show are minor league players, school principals, car salesmen, and everyday life.

Kenny Powers is the outrageous and extraordinary warrior of the crude and uncouth, a selfish man that has been thrust from stardom back into everyday living. He knows he has to change but will never admit it. Because of his pride, he has to create these absurd situations and battles in order to distract from the real inner battle. But he does have a heart, and there are those who will forgive him and love him.

Besides all of this human beauty the show is just funny. Probably top 5 funniest things ever to air. Forget everything I wrote above just watch the show because it's funny.

Eastbound & Down: Chapter 15 (2012)
Season 3, Episode 2
10/10
The Funniest Episode Ever Made
23 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode must be seen. The absurdity reaches a certain point at the end of this episode the viewer will just accept anything.

The beauty of the show has always been living in a small town and the battles that must be fought and the villains that must be dethroned in quaint insignificant places. There is no greater villain than Ashley Schaefer. Ashley Schaefer is abusing Kenny's poor friend Stevie. Stevie is being prostituted to Fanta-sipping Japanese Kia executives on Schaefers plantation. The plantation/KIA workers are all sexual deviants and the mammy that works for them is caught up in it too. Through the absurdity, Kenny fights through with heart. He accepts that he has fatherly duties now and, even though he won't say it, that he would do anything for Stevie because they are best friends.

Entourage (2004–2011)

Hilarity,Hollywood, and Heart
23 May 2023
If you are in your 20s, you need to watch "Entourage" right now. The show is a time-capsule of the best times one could have exploring LA in the 2000s. It doesn't try and be anything it's not. "Entourage" does what Hollywood is supposed to do: entertain. The show is always funny and sometimes sneaks in drama. Some emotional moments reveal that the show is smarter than expected. There are character arcs if you pay attention. You don't have to though. The show is fun regardless. All the characters are great and carry qualities you could find in any group of friends. If you are in LA or NY or just trying to be something in this world, watch the show.

Industry (2020– )
9/10
Very Modern
6 October 2022
"Industry" will either be loved or hated because of its niche. Ignore the haters, it should be loved.

A significant appeal of "Industry" is the atmosphere. If you are younger you will be more receptive to it. You feel the disconnect and seclusion that comes in a globalized and digital world. Each character comes from a different class, and there is no better place to explore that than England. The anxiety of a high intensity work environment is relieved through casual and loveless sex. Characters are desperate to be loved, but more desperate for success. This all combines for a cold and lonesome atmosphere until slowly compassion will be shown, a victory will be had, or a joke will be made. The thrill of achievement pulses throughout your body when a characters trade goes through.

The characters are selfish but one must be in the world of business. You will see things about yourself in them. The show touches on very universal intimate emotions we might feel only to ourselves.

Of course the show is also interesting from a story point of view, but one must understand the characters to be interested in what happens to them.

The show is best watched weekly, not binging it like others. Go into it with low expectations, have a casual understanding of stock trading, and watch both seasons. It gets better and hopefully there will be a season 3.

I saw it twice
20 August 2022
This movie perfectly represents the different shades of bitchery. Everyone will know someone who acts like these girls. The destructive addict, the actress who is fake-sweet, the one who plays dumb, the strong one. There are dudes just like Pete and Greg too. The movie perfectly captures contemporary culture. The pool scene where the characters all meet is actually how people party. It was astounding to see it so well.

You should not go in with the expectation of a horror movie. There is tension in the darkness of the house and the many corridors and hiding spots. The violence does seem real and visceral to a certain extent. But the whole thing doesn't take itself too seriously. It is a funny movie.

You won't like it if you don't know these people.

Breaking Bad (2008–2013)
7/10
Great entertainment, but not perfect
19 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first few seasons of the show, where Walt has to juggle fighting his family, the DEA, and the drug world, were tight. Walt was constantly anxious. The viewer must keep track of the lies told to Skyler. They way Walt got away with it was through ingenuity and cunning. The emotional realism of all this on a family propelled the show. The show excelled at showing the process of solving a problem (Krazy 8 is in the basement, Walt is looking for some sort of weapon, how to deal with a hostage, what must be done) and a solution.

Then with each passing season things became less realistic. The tightness of the first two is lost. It's also very obvious the show is judging Walter for his actions, when really he didn't do much wrong. The show judges Walter as Janes murderer. Walt just let's a dying junkie, that would have destroyed him and Jessie, die. It is a business decision. The show then blames Walter for the airplane collision and all the lives lost which is really a stretch. The show continues to judge Walters actions on moral grounds which is silly. It's a show about a drug dealer and his rise to power; it's hard to be moral in this business. Walter is probably the nicest drug kingpin there is. Each time he kills it's for survival and with each kill there is regret. If he was really immoral he would not barter everything he has for Hanks life, his number one enemy.

What "Breaking Bad" delivers is an entertaining show that's always one step ahead. Where it falters is when it judges it's characters morality. Lacking the depth of "The Sopranos", it rings hollow.
