Barry (2018)
Started of good
I usually skip out on rating shows because how can you possible rate something with so much content and varied quality. Such is the case with Barry as well but Season 3 left so many feelings in me that i wanted to put out there.
I enjoyed Season 1 a great deal and found it a nice balance between comedy, drama and action. I enjoyed the character and story beats and i am also a sucker for shows with a double life theme. While certainly being on the edge of being believable it still managed to pull it off to some degree.
Season 2 never reached the heights of season 1 for me, it got more over the top and silly but i still enjoyed it.
Then we got to season 3 and oh boy.
I see a lot of people complaining about Sallys sideplot and while that certainly had some issues it is nothing compared to the rest of the season. Nothing makes sense anymore.
It is the little things like random characters finding each other at strange locations (ryans dad, albert in desert, motorcycle dudes, etc etc) to character just not making any sense. Who are they? What motivates them? (Fuches, Gene, Albert, bikers, etc etc) and when you don't understand the characters, scenes doesn't fit to together and no one is acting believable then you don't have a story. You just have a sequence of wacky events.
Apparently there will be a season 4 and i will probably watch it just to see how it ends but i am sad that the show couldn't keep up the quality from the first season.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Poor series and even worse adaption
As a moderate fan of the wheel of time books it is endlessly disappointing that this adaption of the series butchers the book series beyond belief and any hope of saving it. It is truly heartbreaking, this will be the tv show adaption that we are going to get and it is a complete butchering. No survivors left behind.
So that sucks ... however even disregarding this the series is very poor.
Visually it is all over the place, sometimes it can look decent but it can also look goofy (whitecloaks, firemask man, blight etc) and the effects and fight scenes are hardly impressive.
The world building is very sparse and i can't imagine anything else than non-book readers being very confused on what is going on. The pacing is all over the place and manages to both feel very rushed and slow at the same time as important parts are rushed while fairly unimportant side parts gets a lot of screentime.
This relates to the main issue of this series which is that it is all over the place, it doesn't feel coherent or well thought through and it rarely goes more than a few minutes until something weird happens that doesn't make any sense.
If you are looking for a full time job for 2022 then i bet you can create a 40 hours youtube series going through each episode just pointing out stuff that makes no sense whatsoever.
Add to that unnatural dialogue, weird editing, weak characters (due to the sadistic butchering mentioned above), weak ending (season 1), even weaker (or-nonexistent) villains and you have yourself a mess of a show.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Quite Trashy
While the intro might trick you into believing that you are watching a slow paced detective movie about finding a brutal serial killer, the movie fairly quickly shows its true colors as a stupid over the top revenge story straight out of a graphic novel.
Like most of its kind the story is insanely stupid, unbelievable and feels like it is written by a edgy 15 year old, but while movies like Sin City at least have the decency to not take itself too seriously this movie takes itself way too seriously, is too long and too slow paced.
The result is a tonally inconsistent mess, as a silly revenge movie it is too slow paced and grimdark, and it is way too classless and stupid to be anything more than that. It got a bunch of excessive violence , torturing and raping going go and perhaps that is enough to please some people but i just found it cheap and out of place.
The movie certainly looks nice and the actors does a good job overall but as a whole i certainly didn't enjoy this movie.
Crawl (2019)
Stupid movie
I didn't like it.
Despite the good premise and promising introduction it quickly devolves into pure stupidity. I am a know-nothing simpleton but even the most casual observer will not be able to go 5 minutes without getting annoyed by things not making sense as long as you pay a little bit of attention.
Perhaps the issue is that i expected a survival movie with realistic people trying to get out of a bad situation while this movie seems more inspired by shark-tornado.
Even before it goes full on stupid at the last part of the movie there are still countless questions which ruins the movie for me
-What is the layout of the place?
-Where is the exit located?
-When are they safe or not safe from the alligators?
-Why not move to a safe place before making a phone call
-You have a spade, how about trying to break out via the wall or roof? (You later broke the roof with a crowbar in a matter of seconds)
-etc etc
But all of these questions are pointless because it goes full on crazy in the last part and clearly shows that this is all about flash and everyone who is watching it with their brains turned on is doing it wrong.
Perhaps some people will like but it is not what i expected and i didn't like it.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
It looks nice
Once upon a time in America is a very long movie about a set of very unlikable gangsters. It looks very good, it sounds very good and there are some very nice period set pieces.
There are also a lot of very nice scenes but a movie is not just a collection of scenes, especially a 4 hours long movie and this is where the movie falls apart.
If you are expecting a coherent and nicely executed story then too bad. The story telling is sloppy. Characters enter and exit the story on a whim. Character motivation changes whenever it suits the story if we are even lucky enough to get any. Add to that story elements that are just plain unbelievable or feel out of place and you end up with a strange mish mash of a story.
For a four hour movie this is a huge letdown. There are still plenty of things to enjoy and overall the movie was fine but it wasn't good.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Could have been decent
So i finally saw this movie and it is very uneven. There are plenty of nice scenes and set pieces but it just can't escape that the script is embarrassingly bad.
The bad guys are comically incompetent and it makes you feel like you are watching a childrens movie. The story is nonsensical and the characters often acts completely unbelievable. Every time i started to get drawn into the movie something stupid and embarrassingly bad happened which made me turn around worried that someone might catch me watching this nonsense thinking that i liked it.
The movie is also overly long because of course it is. A lot of it could easily be cut and the movie would be better for it. I don't understand how it can be so hard to write a decent story when you are investing so much money and effort on top of it.
Fear X (2003)
Waste of potential
I got recommended Fear X and after watching the first half hour or so i thought i had found something very good. The pace may be slow but it was very suspenseful and engaging.
Then things starts to get weirder and weirder and then it ends and you realize that you have been had. The plot is not only completely nonsensical it is also completely lacking in any climax or explanations. I will have to remember this the next time this person recommends another movie.
Fear X is not a very long movie but it feels very long due to its slow pace. Despite its short length it has a lot of filler and plot points that go nowhere. How about some examples:
-Agents being rude and implying stuff about the wife's background goes nowhere
-We follow Harry investigating his wife's murder. He is gathering clues and looking through security tapes. How cool! Then he gets a supernatural revelation telling him that the murderer happened to stay at next door house and he conveniently left a bunch of photos of his family and home town. Ok .....
-What is up with the murderer living in the next door house? Is he a stalker? Lover? Nope, it is just a coincidence and the wife just happened to be at the scene of the crime and the murderer just happened to stay in the next door house. Ok ....
-The murderer came from the town Harry recently visited with his wife. Just another coincidence!
-The murderers family get a bunch of screentime which goes nowhere and get no closure at all
-The murderer is part of some group killing corrupt police officers, goes nowhere
-Then we have the ending climax where Harry meets the murderer. Harry gets shot in the hallway in a Hotel and then it just fades to black? What happened? We are never told but Harry is let go and the movie ends.
There is no closure and nothing makes any sense and this movie was a waste of my time. Stay away.
The World's End (2013)
Neither funny or endearing
Like many people i have very good memories of Shaun of the dead and Hot fuzz however something kept me from going out of my way to see this movie. It just didn't seem to be very fun. It looked over the top, screamy and silly.
Not after finally having seen the movie i can confirm that it was over the top, screamy and silly. It starts of well enough with a couple of old friends meeting up to go to a couple of pubs. It is not all that funny but it is nice and comfortable enough and you think it will grow on you.
Then the robots happen. The drama and character relationship gets completely thrown out of the window. Some people might disagree and claim that these elements remain in the film but i reject that. When characters don't even react to hearing that their friends had been killed that is when i know that the people behind the film has stopped caring.
Sure enough there is some pegg/frost bonding scenes because of course there is but i really don't care. The second half of the movie is pretty nonsencical and the ending is bad.
Overall the idea of people getting wasted is by itself just not very fun and the movie does not have either the heart, action or jokes to make it interesting. It is just over the top lol so random silliness with shouting drunk people. I for one didn't enjoy it. It is watchable and have some good scenes but it is nothing i would recommend and the ending left a bad taste in my mouth.
3:10 to Yuma (2007)
Slow,. Stupid and Silly
I am not sure what this movie is trying to achieve.
As an action movie it is very slow and the action is not very impressive or memorable. Even the action scenes are stupid and none leave any lasting impression.
As a drama it just falls flat due to completely unbelievable events and characters motivation. People don't act like people and it very early becomes clear that this is the Russel Crowe show and we are supposed to see how awesome and cool he is and everyone around him with the possible exception of batman are incompetent.
The setting is cool and the idea that a group of men need to transport a dangerous criminal to a train station is a nice idea but you can only see the guards turn their back towards him so many time until you stop taking it seriously.
The movie is really pushing the crowe/batman duo and the whole thing makes no sense to me. In the final action scenes i was completely confused on the characters motivation and why characters were doing what they were doing.
All in all the messy script ruins the movie, sure it looks nice and the actors did a nice job and if it was a dumb action movie with a run time of 1.5 hours then that would be fine. But it is not, it is a slow dumb drama and the nonsensical script ruins the movie.
The ABC Murders (2018)
Hot Garbage
I really disliked this adaption of Agatha Christie classic book. Calling it an adaption is giving it too much credit as it has only kept the surface elements of the book it is based on. Everything has been changed willy nilly and strange subplots have been added.
All class of Christies book has been removed and has been replaced with endless vulgarities. A simple murder is no longer good enough, heads needs to be decaptiated. And of course there needs to be sex and vulgar talk! The script is just plain garbage and has nothing to do with Christies book.
As a stand alone movie it is still awful.
Keeping Mum (2005)
Still waiting for the jokes
I watched this on a whim and it certainly has some things going for it. The actors do a good job and the scenery is nice however the rest of the movie made me confused.
As a comedy this movie just wasn't funny. Haha it has a silly premise but the actual movie also needs to be funny. I don't need slapstick humor every second but nothing in this movie made me crack up at all.
As a drama it is dragged down by unsympathetic characters and a ridiculous plot. The main character, the wife, is one second worried about her son being bullied and the next second she is planning to run away to mexico with her lover, what? She is a stay at home wife with old kids who spends her time on the golf course but apparently she has a hard life because she is not getting any from her husband and there is some dog barking at night. She just comes of as extremely selfcentered and unsympathetic and that is before the ending when all females in the family goes from covering up murders to killing random people, wut?
Then we have the son who is bullied (and later completely forgotten towards the end of the movie). How is the bullying solved? By sabotaging the bikes of the bullies so that they crash in front of the bullied kid while he is standing there and laughing at them. I am sure that is going to end well. And lets not forget that the bullies tries to attack the son while the maid is standing right next to him, what?
I am starting to rant but all in all the movie despite the good actors and nice scenery did not manage to pull me into the movie and it certainly wasn't for me.
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
good movie
I really liked Law Abiding Citizen. The core of the movie is about how the justice system have been perverted into a bureaucratic mess which has very little connection what every day people actually think is just.
Enter the charismatic anti-hero Clyde who believes he has been wronged by the system and with the power to do something about it. He is nicely portrayed by Butler and most people will probably root for him even though his actions which starts out relatable and understandable slowly escalates into complete madness.
At the other side is the ambitious attorney Rice who Clyde blames for cutting a unjust deal with murderers a long time ago. There is a underlying theme of the attorneys being self-serving and more interested in their stats than doing the job but they are all portrayed as good people at heart. I liked Foxx performance of the attorey and overall i thought everyone in the cast did an excellent job.
Clyde begins a long sequence of attacks on the justice systems which continues even after he is put behind bars. It all really fun and suspenseful however it starts to become a bit silly towards to end and the ending itself felt rushed and especially silly. I have no idea about the layout of the city the movie is set in but if you can't disarm a bomb it seems more reasonable to dispose of it somewhere it can not hurt anyone as fast as possible instead of getting it to the prison and hiding it under Clyde bed ....
With all said and done it was a fun movie which i would recommend and if they have toned down the later parts a bit and concluded the story better it could have been more than just a fun movie.
Event Horizon (1997)
Really fun and atmospheric movie
I have always been a sucker for this kind of movie. You know a movie where a group of people for whatever reason get stuck somewhere where something has gone bad and they need to figure out what is wrong to try to stay alive.
The setting is excellent and the atmosphere is really thick, especially so in the beginning. For better or worse this is not the standard monster movie, at least that is the case before the ending where things start to move perhaps a bit too fast for it own good. With that said i found myself intrigued and interested throughout the entire movie even though it certainly had a different feeling to it in the end compared to the beginning.
I think that the movie would have been even better if they made it a bit longer and explored Weirs motivation a bit more in depth. Then again there seems to be plenty of people who though that this too long and boring so perhaps they made the right call.
With that said they really succeeded in bringing this setting to life and everything from the actors job to the sets were outstanding. The movie is well worth a watch if you are interested in this type of movie.
For Your Eyes Only (1981)
Peak Bond
Lately I have been rewatching the Bond movies from the beginning and "For Your Eyes Only" stands out as one of the better ones. While the previous Moore movies went a bit overboard with the silliness this movie scaled it back and the result is a good mix of seriousness and classic Moore charm.
The background story may be nonsense but it takes Bond to a number of fun and good looking locations. There is a car chase at country roads in southern europe, Ski chase, underwater shenanigans with sharks and some excellent mountain climbing adventures. It is all really fun and it still manages to come together into something coherent.
The background story may be nonsense but Melinas subplot is quite good. The subplot is nothing original but it is carried by the actress who does a really good job. Columbo also comes of like a really likeable Bond companion and Kristatos was excellent as a more grounded, manipulative and less mustache twirling villain.
Overall it all comes together into a well done action movie with a lot of charm and heart into it.
Johnny English Reborn (2011)
Good cast but lacking script and comedy
I have good memories of the first Johnny English and since i am in the middle of rewatching the Bond movies this seemed like a good time to watch its sequel. Despite the cast being really good i never really got into the movie. With a few exception the comedy is not just that good. A lot of the jokes feels pretty cheap and there are some long sequences that are just not that funny.
As a silly spy movie it is also pretty tame. I was expecting a more satisfying spy vehicle than a wheelchair that could go fast and be turned back. All in all its a lackluster comedy saved by its good cast.
Moonraker (1979)
Fun and goofy but unfocused Bond film
Moonraker is by far the goofiest and most unbelievable Bond movie yet. The people who thought that the previous Moore movies was a bit on the goofy side will probably have a hissyfits while watching this one. Their feelings are certainly not unwarranted since the series certainly have changed for better or worse.
I am one of those who can find enjoyment in Bond movies no matter where on the goofy spectrum they happen to be. And there is certainly enjoyment to be found in Moonraker.
The villain of the story has crafted a space base which he has filled with healthy young specimen of the two genders to repopulate the earth with. With the use of biological weapon he plans to exterminate all human life on earth and it is up to Bond to stop it.
The beginning of the story is set in the villains french villa and the end is set in the space station accompanied with silly laser fights. All of this was nice and charming but in the middle Bond seems to travel all across the world to Venice to Rio and so on and i felt that it got a bit too much for my taste.
It becomes a bit unfocused and i would much rather that it was set in fewer locations that were more properly explored. Jaws is back yet again and is as charming as ever. I really like the actor behind the role and i enjoy his character however it becomes a bit too goofy sometimes and it is hard to take it seriously when he manages to survive what he does all the time. The joke that he is invincible and can survive everything is taken a bit too far in my opinion.
The goofieness can be charming but there was also a charm in the more classy Bond that you could find in the previous movies. The Man with the Golden Gun for instance certainly had some silliness in it but it also had some class to it and that is certainly something that is lacking in this movie.
All in all i enjoyed it for what it was however after reading what i have written in this review it seems that even I might have some problem with the goofieness after all. Perhaps it is simply the case that goofiness can be fun and good but a goofy movie will not be as memorable as a classy movie and as Bond movie i would call this a pretty average one.
The Addams Family (1991)
Charming story with great performances
I went into this movie with not expectations and was met with a really charming movie.
The performances and presentation are just wonderfully charming and everyone in the cast does a stunning job. In particular Anjelica and Raul does a wonderful job presenting the eccentric and romantic parents in the household and Christopher does a wonderful job presenting Gordon.
The story in itself is nothing special though the setting is quite nice. Comedywise it is not the kind of comedy where i find myself constantly laughing out loud, it is more the type of comedy where you sit and watch with amused smile on your lips
Hitman (2007)
An Alright action movie
The movie Hitman may share some background story and visual scenes with the game series but it is clearly a different thing. If you are looking for a proper hitman game where 47 approaches a mission silent assassin style with ave maria playing in the background then you should look elsewhere.
With that out of the way Hitman is an alright action movie, you won't remember it in ten years but there are worse ways to spend an evening. The cast does a good job overall. The plot is serviceable and allows our superduper assassins to shine by putting him in a number of difficult situation. The two main leads worked well together and there were some chemistry between them.
What stops it from being more than an average action movie then? Well the villain is not that memorable and they story is not that good. There are also few action scenes with anything close to any emotional impact, there are a lot of shooting and explosions but there are no scenes i will look up on youtube in the future.
I think that the movie would have benefited if they borrowed a bit more of the class and dignity from the game. At times they try to portray the main character as a slow and methodical but that character is quickly thrown out of the window and replaced with an acrobatic ninja instead who dodges bullets with ease.
I still enjoyed it for what it was, which is an average action movie. It could have been much more however.
The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997)
Made me laugh
I watched this movie on a whim and it actually made me laugh out loudly a number of times during its runtime. The movie is about Wallace who is an average guy who gets involved in a spy conspiracy. The catch is that he believes that its all live theater and its all just a very ambitious play.
You probably shouldn't overthink this premise however as you would expect from the premise a number of coincidences and misunderstandings drags Wallace further and further into the complicated plot. It is all rather silly but its quite fun and endearing. Overall i think the cast did a good job, the side characters fit their roles nicely and the two leading actors put a lot of charm into the movie.
It can be quite whimsical and silly and for some people this will probably be off-putting. I found it at times to be a bit too much but overall i thought it was a fun ride. I think that i can conclude by saying that the movie delivers exactly what you would expect out of it from the premise and if you are not into comedy resulting from a number of silly misunderstandings then you are clearly looking at the wrong movie.
Resident Evil (2002)
I liked it
I recently rewatched this movie and found myself once again enjoying it more than i thought i would. It is a competent survival movie where a group of people have to escape an underground deathtrap with a crazy AI, zombies and worse. It is cheesy but it is also good fun. The movie have a lot of twists and turns in it but it somehow manages to stay reasonable coherent considering all of the elements it mixes into the story from a killer AI, zombies, monsters, amnesia, conspiracies, betrayals and more.
I think that the actors did a good job with what they were given and i found myself really warming up to the remaining military guys. Its a shame that they died so abruptly at the end of the movie.
With all of this said i would not recommend this movie to just anyone. It is certainly not on my "must see" list and i would not recommend it to anyone who is not a fan of the genre. It is a movie that is well worth spending an evening watching if you like cheesy, goofy survival action movies. If that is not your thing then you can probably forgot about this movie without any worries.
