Some 2010 Movies That Deserved A Closer Look

by chgaines-1 | created - 17 Dec 2010 | updated - 17 Dec 2010 | Public

This is sort of a jumbled combination of films I saw at film festivals and during theatrical releases that either deserved a closer look, or a second look, because they were sort of misunderstood when they came out, or didn't stand a chance against the competition. Check 'em out! They are in no particular order.

Director: Roberto Garzelli | Stars: Thibault Vinçon, Annabelle Hettmann, Pascal N'Zonzi, Emmanuel Salinger

Votes: 402

French film that's reminiscent of the work of Cronenberg or Polanski, about Helena, a student of anatomical drawing who has a raging affair with Benoit, a young radiologist. The film asks: if you really loved someone so much, and you had the ability to actually see inside them, would you? Sexy, creepy, smart and gripping.

2. Amore liquido (2010)

100 min | Drama

Mario is a 40-year-old street sweeper from Bologna who is addicted to pornography. During the month of August Mario remains in the city despite it becoming essentially a ghost town as the ... See full summary »

Director: Marco Luca Cattaneo | Stars: Stefano Fregni, Sara Sartini, Pina Randi, Simonetta Solder

I'm going to include this film, because it was on the festival circuit in 2010 even though it was technically finished in 2009. The story follows Mario, a 40-year old garbage collector from Bologna who lives with his disabled mother. Oh, and he's addicted to porn. Sound hard to watch? Hardly. What makes the film is the performance of Stefano Fregni as Mario, who brings such redemptive sensitivity and morose humor to the role that he is simply joy to observe.

3. Sinestesia (I) (2010)

90 min | Drama

Sinestesia chronicles the vicissitudes of four young adults in two moments of their lives which are in turn linked to two dramatic episodes three years apart. The intervening years see the ... See full summary »

Director: Erik Bernasconi | Stars: Alessio Boni, Melanie Winiger, Leonardo Nigro, Giorgia Wurth

Votes: 63

Excellent Swiss film about four friends who's lives are influenced by seemingly random effects that are beyond their control. It's a "butterfly effect" technique you've seen before in films like Babel or Mammut, but the way this story winds around a pivotal event is quite compelling.

4. Helena from the Wedding (2010)

Not Rated | 89 min | Comedy, Drama

49 Metascore

Newlyweds Alex and Alice host a New Year's Eve party for their closest friends at a remote cabin in the mountains. An unexpected addition arrives and the group's facades begin to crumble.

Director: Joseph Infantolino | Stars: Dagmara Dominczyk, Paul Fitzgerald, Dominic Fumusa, Jessica Hecht

Votes: 423

Don't let the premise (yuppie friends meet in remote cabin to celebrate New Year's Eve together) discourage you. While you could probably lump the film in with acerbic ensemble turns like Rachel Getting Married, The Anniversary Party or Margot At The Wedding you wouldn't be giving the strong performances and whip-smart dialog enough credit. Also it's good to see an indie turn from Community's Gillian Jacobs. Good movie.

5. A Little Help (2010)

R | 109 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

54 Metascore

A woman gets entangled in a series of bizarre lies in order to take care of herself and her 12-year-old son.

Director: Michael J. Weithorn | Stars: Jenna Fischer, Jay Klaitz, Daniel Yelsky, Brooke Smith

Votes: 3,564 | Gross: $0.09M

Another film that really needs a champion. Jenna Fischer stars as Laura, a 35 year old Long Island dental hygenist who's husband dies suddenly, leaving her and her 12-year old son Dennis to deal with life and her overbearing family, all in the months following 9/11. When Dennis tells his new schoolmates that his father was a firefighter who died in the Twin Towers, Laura finds that, for a while at least, it's easier to live the lie than admit the truth. Tense, witty and emotionally satisfying, this film needs to find its audience!

6. Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)

R | 87 min | Documentary, Comedy, Crime

85 Metascore

Following the style of some of the world's most prolific street artists, an amateur filmmaker makes a foray into the art world.

Director: Banksy | Stars: Banksy, Mr. Brainwash, Space Invader, Debora Guetta

Votes: 68,837 | Gross: $3.29M

I included this because it's simply the best film of the year. Hands down.

7. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Comedy, Fantasy

69 Metascore

In a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick

Votes: 465,609 | Gross: $31.49M

C'mon people. This was a film made with lots and lots of love and affection. Every frame of this film has something going for it and yet, it couldn't really ever find its audience. How come? Amazing!

8. Cyrus (I) (2010)

R | 91 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

74 Metascore

John and Molly, a divorced middle aged man and a single mother meet at a friends party and start up a small relationship, all John has to do now is meet Molly's son... Cyrus

Directors: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass | Stars: John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, Catherine Keener

Votes: 36,614 | Gross: $7.46M

I'm going to include this on the list. I know it got a proper release and some decent attention, but here's a film that deserves to be at least in the Oscar conversation, and it isn't.

9. I'm Still Here (I) (2010)

R | 108 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

48 Metascore

Documents Joaquin Phoenix's transition from the acting world to a career as an aspiring rapper.

Director: Casey Affleck | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Antony Langdon, Carey Perloff, Larry McHale

Votes: 23,904 | Gross: $0.41M

A controversial selection, I am aware. I thought it was interesting how it was easy for people to be cynical about this film and discount it as "fake" but it was such a pariah after the "truth" came out. The media makes our world like the court of King Louis XIV, where you can fall out of favor and everyone just follows along. My feeling is that, while it was hard to watch a d-bag hard at work being a d-bag, this was an extremely well constructed film and Casey and Joaquin were really turning the mirror back on all of us. If we could be self-critical as a society for a split-second, we might have learned something really valuable from this film.

10. It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)

PG-13 | 101 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

63 Metascore

A clinically-depressed teenager gets a new start after he checks himself into an adult psychiatric ward.

Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck | Stars: Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Dana DeVestern

Votes: 148,267 | Gross: $6.35M

Didn't really make much of a splash when it came out, but I think that most people who saw it were glad they did.

11. Looking for Eric (2009)

Not Rated | 116 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

66 Metascore

Eric, a football fanatic postman whose life is descending into crisis, receives some life coaching from the famously philosophical Eric Cantona.

Director: Ken Loach | Stars: Steve Evets, Eric Cantona, Stephanie Bishop, Gerard Kearns

Votes: 17,975 | Gross: $0.06M

Debuted in 2009, but released in 2010. ANYONE who sees this film will love it. But, did anyone see it?

12. Never Let Me Go (2010)

R | 103 min | Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

The lives of three friends, from their early school days into young adulthood, when the reality of the world they live in comes knocking.

Director: Mark Romanek | Stars: Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Izzy Meikle-Small

Votes: 153,349 | Gross: $2.43M

Funny thing about this film - it's also getting edged out of the awards race. It's now officially an also-ran. Absolutely haunting film that deserves nods for the performances of its principles and for creating an eerie world which has made a matter-of-fact culture out of cloning and organ harvesting.

13. Restrepo (2010)

R | 93 min | Documentary, Biography, History

85 Metascore

A year with one platoon in the deadliest valley in Afghanistan.

Directors: Tim Hetherington, Sebastian Junger | Stars: The Men of Battle Company 2nd of the 503rd Infantry Regiment 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Juan 'Doc Restrepo, Dan Kearney, LaMonta Caldwell

Votes: 24,425 | Gross: $1.33M

Thank God people are finally starting to see this film a bit more now that it's out on DVD/VOD, but it sort of tanked when it was released in the theaters. Has to do with people wanting to be "entertained" rather than woken up when they hit the multiplex, but honestly, if you want to sit on the edge of your seat and witness what it's like to be square in the middle of warfare, you really shouldn't miss this film.

14. Please Give (2010)

R | 87 min | Comedy, Drama

78 Metascore

In New York City, a husband and wife butt heads with the granddaughters of the elderly woman who lives in the apartment the couple owns.

Director: Nicole Holofcener | Stars: Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall, Elizabeth Keener

Votes: 11,586 | Gross: $4.03M

A beautifully acted and painfully-accurately observed portrayal of white liberal guilt. Really loved this movie, but it kind of landed with a thud when it was theatrically released. You should see it - you'll like it.

15. The Dry Land (2010)

R | 92 min | Drama

47 Metascore

A U.S. soldier returning home from war struggles to reconcile his experiences abroad with the life and family he left in Texas.

Director: Ryan Piers Williams | Stars: Ryan O'Nan, America Ferrera, Wilmer Valderrama, Jason Ritter

Votes: 549 | Gross: $0.01M

I feel a bit like WINTERS BONE might have whipped the "raw rural drama" carpet right out from under this film. After premiering at Sundance in 2010 it ran the festival circuit and picked up some awards, but didn't quite penetrate the awards pool. It should have.

16. The Square (2008)

R | 105 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

75 Metascore

A man's life begins to unravel when his mistress brings him a bag of cash.

Director: Nash Edgerton | Stars: David Roberts, Claire van der Boom, Joel Edgerton, Anthony Hayes

Votes: 6,384 | Gross: $0.05M

Even though it's a 2008 movie, it was actually released in 2010, not that you would have known. This is an excellent example of why Australian film is so damn good when it wants to be. Taught, riveting drama/thriller. If you ever get the chance, see it!

17. Tamara Drewe (2010)

R | 107 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

64 Metascore

A young newspaper writer returns to her hometown in the English countryside, where her childhood home is being prepped for sale.

Director: Stephen Frears | Stars: Gemma Arterton, Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, Roger Allam

Votes: 22,658 | Gross: $0.56M

Frothy, sexy, funny and sad. This film suffered from a terrible print campaign that made it look like a bad 80's sex romp. You'll love this film if you see it.

18. The Other Guys (2010)

PG-13 | 107 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

64 Metascore

Two mismatched New York City detectives seize an opportunity to step up like the city's top cops, whom they idolize, only things don't quite go as planned.

Director: Adam McKay | Stars: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Derek Jeter, Eva Mendes

Votes: 288,532 | Gross: $119.22M

I include this movie for no other reason than the quiet fight at the funeral. "The quiet fight" (fighting - in this case at a funeral - but attempting to be quiet while you're doing it) is the funniest thing I've ever seen. Stuck with me for months.

19. The Oath (2010)

Unrated | 90 min | Documentary

72 Metascore

Tells the story of two men whose fateful encounter in 1996 set them on a course of events that led them to Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden, 9/11, Guantanamo, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Director: Laura Poitras | Stars: Osama bin Laden, Salim Hamdan, Abu Jandal, Troy Lebane

Votes: 951 | Gross: $0.04M

This film didn't make it onto the Oscar short list and it's a crime. Forget all of that Wikileaks business, if you want to know what really goes on in the minds of people caught in the cross hairs of a world at war, see this film. It's astonishing.

20. Monsters (2010)

R | 94 min | Adventure, Drama, Romance

63 Metascore

Six years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion, a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

Director: Gareth Edwards | Stars: Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able, Mario Zuniga Benavides, Annalee Jefferies

Votes: 97,665 | Gross: $0.24M

Low budget science fiction. There's a lot to be said for it.
