1. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008–2009)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

Set after the events in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Sarah Connor and her son, John, try to stay under-the-radar from the government, as they plot to destroy the computer network, Skynet, in hopes of preventing Armageddon.

Stars: Lena Headey, Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau, Richard T. Jones

Votes: 62,817

Preserving Terminator's good name by wiping #3 from the record. Lead by 4 amazing actors, Summer Glau being the best this show was VERY prematurely canceled. Rarely to I ever lament the death of a show but in this case I find it disgusting. We never got a real ending, or anything resembling a conclusion. BRING IT BACK!

2. Shameless (2004–2013)

TV-MA | 90 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

The lives and relationships of a group of siblings and their estranged father Frank Gallagher on a rough Manchester estate.

Stars: David Threlfall, Rebecca Atkinson, Alice Barry, Nicky Evans

Votes: 18,471

I love this show so much I run the Wiki. Slowly going down hill but still an amazing show, so funny and sad and touching and true. Just spot on with average British life. The Us remake is terrible, they were so lazy with it they barely changed a thing and still managed to screw it up.

3. The X-Files (1993–2018)

TV-14 | 45 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Two F.B.I. Agents, Fox Mulder the believer and Dana Scully the skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained, while hidden forces work to impede their efforts.

Stars: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis

Votes: 249,680

Do I really need to? Who alive and of sound mind does not know what the X Files is? Or how it pushed the envelope and became the Internet's first real success story. Did go down hill in the later series, Mulder's departure and Scully occasional visits in the higher numbered series ruined it for me, along with the terrible character's that took over the X Files.

4. Doctor Who (2005–2022)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The further adventures in time and space of the alien adventurer known as the Doctor and his companions from planet Earth.

Stars: Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Matt Smith

Votes: 246,446

Yeah, technically it's from the 60's, and as much as I love the original show, I can't get enough of Doctor Who. Time travel, space, aliens, horror, River Song, comedy, it has it all. Favorite Doctor: David Tennant Favorite Companions: #1 Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) #2 Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) Favorite Character of all: RIVER SONG.

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003)

TV-14 | 44 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

A young woman, destined to slay vampires, demons and other infernal creatures, deals with her life fighting evil, with the help of her friends.

Stars: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head

Votes: 159,658

I actually discovered this last year. Obviously I knew of it's existence as do a hell of alot of people, but I always watched Charmed over it. Then while struggling for something to watch I remembered how it'd been described as a cross between Charmed and the X files and I have to say, I love it. The quality slips in the later seasons but it's still of a high standard. That Joss Whedon eh? Will he ever fail to impress me? Oh wait, he did, Firefly was not my thing at all.

6. Angel (1999–2004)

TV-14 | 44 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

The vampire Angel, cursed with a soul, moves to Los Angeles and aids people with supernatural-related problems while questing for his own redemption.

Stars: David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter, Alexis Denisof, J. August Richards

Votes: 75,742

Obviously right up there with Buffy, but Angel has always had that more adult quality. The character of Fred (Doctor Saunders in Dollhouse) made this show for me, and later Illyria. The show goes a little haywire in Season 3 and 4 in my opinion, obviously mixed with great episodes but the over arching "big bad" story was of a strangely low standard. But the show surpasses itself in it's final season, which was amazing.

7. American Horror Story (2011– )

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

An anthology series centering on different characters and locations, showcasing different aspects of horror.

Stars: Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson

Votes: 343,425

8. Absolutely Fabulous (1992–2012)

TV-14 | 45 min | Comedy

The wild misadventures of Edina "Eddy" Monsoon and her best friend Patsy Stone, who live in a nearly constant haze of drugged, drunken selfishness.

Stars: Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, June Whitfield

Votes: 21,518

I have loved this show since I was so so young. Patsy is everything I want to be in life. She's loud and brash and funny and nasty and sex mad, she smokes like a chimney and drinks like a sailor and does more drugs than Jagger. A truly classic TV show and it's coming back this year (2011) for a 20 year special!! :D

9. Spaced (1999–2001)

TV-14 | 25 min | Comedy

Friends Tim and Daisy, 20-something North Londoners with uncertain futures, must pretend to be a couple to live in the only apartment they can afford.

Stars: Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, Julia Deakin, Nick Frost

Votes: 57,651

Amazingly funny and British, with incredible characters that are both believable and brilliantly bizzare. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright technically began their success here and later went on to Shaun of the Dead and the amazing Hot Fuzz. But Spaced's co-writer/creator (with Pegg) Jessica Hynes neé Stevenson never quite made it with them sadly, beyond playing a bit role in Shaun of the Dead she seems to have chosen family over "breaking America", which is fair but sad because she's amazing.

10. Pretty Little Liars (2010–2017)

TV-14 | 44 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance

Four friends band together against an anonymous foe who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets, while also investigating the disappearance of their best friend.

Stars: Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell

Votes: 178,304

Another newer show. Also another show that shows just how much I can show my sexuality at times lol. Pretty Little Liars is superb, one of the few shows I love that has no effects or similar, just good drama with occasional action. It even got me onto the books which are also amazing, just quite different.

11. Cougar Town (2009–2015)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy, Romance

Follows the escapades and relationships of a group of neighbors living in Gulfhaven, Florida.

Stars: Courteney Cox, Christa Miller, Busy Philipps, Dan Byrd

Votes: 45,868

Cougar Town (yeah yeah, it has a terrible name that doesn't describe it at all) is basically Scrubs, but better. Alot of people avoid it because the name makes it sound like something different, but it's pure awesome comedy drenched in wine. The recent (2012) episodes aren't up to the usual standard at the moment but I love this show. If you liked Scrubs, you WILL like this.

12. Fringe (2008–2013)

TV-14 | 46 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

An F.B.I. agent is forced to work with an institutionalized scientist and his son in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena.

Stars: Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Jasika Nicole

Votes: 257,423

I have only just discovered Fringe recently. I never liked Lost, which was made by a lot of the same people, but this show is a brilliant mix of The X-Files and any good investigation show. Similar to Supernatural like show but without anything REALLY supernatural, it's all science related, fringe science (aka pseudo science). It can be a confusing show if you let your mind wander but it does mystery so well and hasn't disapointed me yet.

13. Dollhouse (2009–2010)

TV-14 | 44 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

A top secret organization erases the identities of attractive young people, turning them into blank "dolls" ready for imprints of temporary identities they need to fulfill assignments for clients.

Stars: Eliza Dushku, Harry Lennix, Fran Kranz, Tahmoh Penikett

Votes: 51,790

Has a bad reputation on the web. People put down Eliza Dushku's acting skills and at the end of the day it failed. Personaly I think people couldn't get passed the whole slavery angle, especially where sex is concerned. And yes I'm aware of the rumours that Sarah Connor was canceled for this and if true that's sad, but they're both great shows, TSCC being rather better however.

14. Charmed (1998–2006)

TV-14 | 42 min | Drama, Fantasy, Mystery

Three Halliwell sisters discover that they are descendants of a line of good female witches and are destined to fight against the forces of evil, using their combined power of witchcraft known as the "Power of Three".

Stars: Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Brian Krause, Rose McGowan

Votes: 91,517

Another rather well known entry, and another example of my obsession with fantasy, magic, sci-fi, aliens, time travel and the like. Went majorly down hill in the later seasons as do so many other shows but still an amazing show. Piper has and always will be my favorite character in Charmed aswell as being the character with the power's I'd most like to have.

15. Supernatural (2005–2020)

TV-14 | 44 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

Two brothers follow their father's footsteps as hunters, fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds, including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth.

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, Misha Collins

Votes: 482,934

Something I avoided for years, after watching small parts of it I thought it juvenile and rather sad. Eventually a friend annoyed me into watching it, from beginning to now, and I absolutely loved it. Sam Winchester is sexy as hell for one, Lilith as a child is some of the best TV I've ever seen. Just an all round, fun, intriguing ride.

16. Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV (1985–1987)

30 min | Comedy

Sketch-based show starring Victoria Wood, Dame Julie Walters, and many others. Included regular items such as "Acorn Antiques" with Julie as Mrs. Overall and a regular advice slot from Agony Aunt Kitty (Patricia Routledge).

Stars: Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Celia Imrie, Duncan Preston

Votes: 425

Classic show, began and finished a few years before I was even born but an ex boyfriend introduced me to it and I've loved Victoria Wood and Julie Walters since. Full of amazingly funny British comedy sketches, from the random and insane to the dry, sarcastic and insulting. Just amazing.

17. French and Saunders (1987–2017)

TV-PG | 30 min | Comedy

Comedy duo Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders satirically present aspects of British life, films such as Batman Forever and Pulp Fiction.

Stars: Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Simon Brint, Rowland Rivron

Votes: 3,745

Another British classic. The later series got kind of painful to watch but the majority of the show is amazingly funny, even today. Their musical and movie parodies are my favorite part of the show by far.

18. Will & Grace (1998–2020)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy, Romance

Gay lawyer Will and straight interior designer Grace share a New York City apartment. Their best friends are gleeful and proud gay Jack and charismatic, filthy-rich, amoral socialite Karen.

Stars: Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally, Sean Hayes

Votes: 60,285

Karen Walker is one of my favorite characters in anything, ever. She is the biggest reason I love this show. Maybe a large part of why I love it is because it was the first time I saw gay men on TV that weren't always bitchy, feminine, the joke or trying to say homosexuality is wrong. It also had plenty of awesome guest stars, such as Cher and Madonna (who was hilarious) and was just the right kind of funny.

19. Medium (2005–2011)

TV-14 | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Fantasy

Suburban mom Allison DuBois attempts to balance family life with solving mysteries using her special gift. The dead send her visions of their deaths or other crimes while she sleeps.

Stars: Patricia Arquette, Miguel Sandoval, Jake Weber, Sofia Vassilieva

Votes: 31,110

Another Paranormal-esque show. Medium follows the life of Allison Dubois, the psychic who works with the District Attorney's Office and a Police Detective in Pheonix to solve crimes. Allison has general psychic feelings and impressions from people she meets, the off bit of lie detecting and mind reading along with visions but the bulk of her impressions come from her dreams, dreams sent by the dead that she can communicate with. Canceled before it's time and overly rushed to it's conclusion, Medium never had a bad season.

20. Lost Girl (2010–2016)

TV-MA | 44 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

When a succubus finds it difficult to adapt with her unusual traits inspite of being born in a human family, she sets off on a journey to find out the truth of her origin.

Stars: Anna Silk, Kris Holden-Ried, Zoie Palmer, Rick Howland

Votes: 33,074

Another supernatural show I love. Bo and Kenzie are my favorite gals on TV at the moment. It's full of sex (the main character being a Sucubus and all), action and mystery. The second season just ended but I cannot wait for more.

21. Dexter (2006–2013)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

He's smart. He's lovable. He's Dexter Morgan, America's favorite serial killer, who spends his days solving crimes and nights committing them.

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar

Votes: 765,457

I discovered this incredibly late too, but now I watch it every week (despite being in the UK and therefor behind shhhh). I watched everything up until the last series over the course of days and then waited excitedly for this current series. Serial killers, blood, swearing, insane people, sociopaths, Darla (Buffy/Angel)/Marcy Foxx (Foxy [Jawbreaker]) etc. Basicaly my other weakness to magic and super powers, murder, but not in a CSI or Law and Order way.

22. Desperate Housewives (2004–2012)

TV-14 | 45 min | Comedy, Drama, Mystery

Secrets and truths unfold through the lives of female friends in one suburban neighborhood after the mysterious suicide of a neighbor.

Stars: Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria

Votes: 139,701

One of the few TV shows I love that advertises to the world that I am either a very gay guy or a secret middle aged woman. So very unlike most things I enjoy, Desperate Housewives is just so very full of drama and bitchyness that I could never resist. Favorite Housewives: Gabrielle Solis and Bree Van De Kamp/Hodge

23. Samantha Who? (2007–2009)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy, Mystery, Romance

A woman suffers from amnesia and is forced to find out who she really is.

Stars: Christina Applegate, Jennifer Esposito, Kevin Dunn, Melissa McCarthy

Votes: 11,396

This show had 2 awesome seasons before it was canceled (on a technical cliff hanger ending). It starred the brilliant Christina Applegate, known best as Kelly from Married With Children. One of the funniest US shows I have ever watched, but as usual, canceled WAY before it's time.

24. Ugly Betty (2006–2010)

TV-PG | 60 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

Smart but wholesome Betty embraces her unique appearance and independent attitude in the cutthroat world of New York fashion.

Stars: America Ferrera, Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz

Votes: 47,839

Another forray into the gay/female fringe world. Ugly Betty and the amazingly bitchy world of Mode is possibly the best drama/comedy of the last few years. Plus it's whole value as the story of the ugly, poor girl who succeeds where the mean rich people fail. But one thing I loved about this show is how it wasn't the story of an ugly girl who nobody liked having a make over and becoming everyone's best friend. Yes, she had her braces off and plucked her eyebrows, stopped making as many bad fashion choices. But Betty didn't compromise who she was. This isn't She's All That or even The Devil Wear's Prada. I guess you could say Betty refines herself into a true better version of herself, rather than superficial make overs solve everything.

25. Dead Like Me (2003–2004)

TV-14 | 60 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

After being hit on the head by a toilet seat that fell from Mir space station, a young temp clerk becomes a grim reaper in death.

Stars: Ellen Muth, Callum Blue, Jasmine Guy, Mandy Patinkin

Votes: 43,888

Dead Like Me follows the post death life of George Lass and her job as a Grim Reaper, charged with taking the souls of dead people after her own death by flaming toilet seat. Her co workers include the brilliant Betty (for a while) played by Rebecca Gayheart (who I loved in Jawbreaker), the crass and pill popping drunk Mason (Callum Blue sp?), the tough and formidable meter maid Roxy (Jasmine Guy), later the once almost film star who has fellated everyone ever Daisy (Laura Harris) and the boss of the gang Rube (Mandy Patinkin). George is also another character filled with sarcasm and cynicism that I can't help but relate to.

26. Daria (1997–2002)

TV-PG | 30 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

A smart and cynical girl goes through teenage life as a proud outsider in a world of mainly idiotic adolescents and condescending adults.

Stars: Tracy Grandstaff, Wendy Hoopes, Julian Rebolledo, John Lynn

Votes: 27,224

A remnant of the 90's and MTV's glory days, still as watchable now as ever. Daria's intelligence, social akwardness, cynical and sarcastic attitude just endeared me to her as only finding your animated opposite sex twin could.

27. Eastwick (2009–2010)

60 min | Drama, Fantasy

A mysterious man bestows unique powers to three women.

Stars: Jaime Ray Newman, Lindsay Price, Rebecca Romijn, Sara Rue

Votes: 9,086

I only recently discovered this show, years after it being mentioned to me and I enjoyed it so much I watched each episode one after the other. Then I found out it was canceled, just like almost every other American show I loved. I really do want to hurt American channel execs. Alot. With fire.

28. Queer as Folk (1999–2000)

TV-MA | 48 min | Comedy, Drama

A groundbreaking gay adult drama which chronicles the lives of Stuart and Vince, as well as 15-year-old Nathan, who is in love with Stuart.

Stars: Aidan Gillen, Craig Kelly, Charlie Hunnam, Denise Black

Votes: 7,609

Written and Created by Russel T Davies, the genius behind the first 4 Series of Doctor Who's 2005 reboot, Queer as Folk went on to spawn an American version (what doesn't these days?). It follows the lives of super slut (somehow, since he's ugly) Stuart, his best friend and secret admirer Vince and 15 year old Nathan who falls for Stuart after a one night stand. Brilliantly gay without being sickeningly camp, real, heartfelt and sometimes sexy.

29. Torchwood (2006–2011)

TV-MA | 50 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

The members of the Torchwood Institute, a secret organization founded by the British Crown, fight to protect the Earth from extraterrestrial and supernatural threats.

Stars: John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Kai Owen, Gareth David-Lloyd

Votes: 43,440

Torchwood is to Doctor Who what Angel is to Buffy, ie set in the same universe but with much more adult themes. A great mix of sci fi, horror, comedy and sex appeal. However in it's third series, a mini series called Children of the Earth consisting of 5 episodes all following the same story are of a different calibre to the first 2 series. Amazingly dark and devoid of the show's usual humour, which isn't always a bad thing, it's a true dark sci-fi tragedy filled with conspiracy and deception. And it's upcoming 4th series is being shaped by some very talented people, but the usual "America puts money in and now the show must be in America, be changed to be more accessible by America and shown in America first" is really annoying me.

30. QI (2003– )

TV-PG | 30 min | Comedy, Game-Show

A comedy panel game in which being Quite Interesting is more important than being right. Sandi Toksvig is joined each week by four comedians to share anecdotes and trivia, and maybe answer some questions as well.

Stars: Alan Davies, Stephen Fry, Sandi Toksvig, Bill Bailey

Votes: 33,613

Yeah it's not a proper TV show like all the others, but I just had to shout out my love for QI. Stephen Fry is awesome and if he were younger I'd do him in a heart beat :P but seriously, VERY funny. Has a lot of recurring small time British celebrities on it and of course the constant presence of the sometimes hillarious, sometimes juvenille Alan Davies.

31. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996–2003)

TV-G | 22 min | Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Sabrina is a normal teenager, except for one thing - she's a witch. Guided by her aunts, who come from a long line of witches, and Salem, a mischievous warlock doing penance as a cat, Sabrina continually struggles to harness her powers.

Stars: Melissa Joan Hart, Caroline Rhea, Beth Broderick, Nick Bakay

Votes: 42,741

Possibly the most random show on this list. Yes it shows my love of magic again but to a much more juvenile and silly degree. I obviously enjoyed it as a child, even though it was more geared to the female of the species (guess that's my gay gene again) and I actually re watched it all again recently, at the age of 20 and I still enjoyed the first few seasons. Though it does go downhill once she gets ready for college. The lack of Zelda and especialy Hilda ruined it for me.
