Director: David Yates | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon

Biggest film of the year and one of the most emotional. I can still remember sitting in a movie theatre in Fareham with my best mate Evee, wearing our special edition Harry Potter 3d glasses. We had both read the books, seen all the films, been true Potter-hards since we were around seven years old and we were in absolute messes. The sheer emotion that was being shown up on the screen and the realisation that this would truly be the culmination of all things Potter stayed with us both long after we left the cinema on that wet July morning.

2. Thor (2011)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Fantasy

57 Metascore

The powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Director: Kenneth Branagh | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston

Votes: 900,272 | Gross: $181.03M

One of the most immersive films that I saw last year. Me and my mate Lyndon were both fortunate to see this in Imax 3D (which cost us around £10, but it was worth it!) and I have to say it was not only visually impressive, but it had a fantastic story as well (the whole Thor-Jane romance aside).

I had enjoyed Kenneth Branagh's work on Shakespeare adaptations such as Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing and whilst watching this film, it was easy to see why he chose this film as his leap into blockbuster-dom. The family dynamic between Thor, Loki and Odin definitely hinted at elements of King Lear and Hamlet, whilst Thor's banishment on Earth (Prince making himself known with the lesser class/humans) harkened to elements of Henry V. What could have easily been the primest piece of cheese this side of Wensleydale turned out to be the first true blockbuster of the summer and one of the greatest superhero movies ever. Roll on The Avengers!
