Horror for the Holidays: Halloween
by MasterBrock | created - 21 Oct 2011 | updated - 18 Jul 2012 | PublicI guess you could watch just about any horror movie on and around Halloween, but there's easily enough movies to make an entirely Halloween and Samhain related list. Here's the best of the best, none of the awful crap like the abysmal The Pumpkin Karver (2006). Now if only someone would finally make a halfway decent Dia de los Muertos film.

1. Halloween (1978)
R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.
Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, Nancy Kyes
Votes: 306,980 | Gross: $47.00M
The penultimate, quintessential Halloween film. You could probably list most of the series, but the quality begins to rapidly deteriorate and constant reboots have never really helped to stem the loss of quality. Tarnished reputation and all, Michael Meyers remains a steadfast icon of horror and the face of Halloween. This is the perfect horror movie for any occasion, but especially October 31st.
2. Trick 'r Treat (2007)
R | 82 min | Comedy, Horror
Five interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: an everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.
Director: Michael Dougherty | Stars: Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes
Votes: 104,657
A cleverly worked anthology based around several Halloween superstitions and legends. There are tremendous production values and immaculate attention spent to making it the most decorated Halloween vision ever captured on film. Not all the stories hold up, but the overall effect and interweaving of the plots makes for a vastly positive experience. Not to be confused with the mediocre heavy metal slasher Trick or Treat (1986).
3. Murder Party (2007)
Not Rated | 79 min | Comedy, Horror
A random invitation to a Halloween party leads a man into the hands of a rogue collective intent on murdering him for the sake of their art, sparking a bloodbath of mishap, mayhem and hilarity.
Director: Jeremy Saulnier | Stars: Chris Sharp, Kate Porterfield, Tess Porterfield Lovell, Puff Snooty
Votes: 12,301
Obscure film about a socially awkward officer worker who decides to attend what he thinks is a costume party. Turns out the invitation for a murder party is a little more literal. Enters the realm of pretentious as it sends up the whole concept of art communities. Whacky fun and clever dialogue makes this a totally memorable film for anyone lucky enough to have heard about it.
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
PG | 76 min | Animation, Family, Fantasy
Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.
Director: Henry Selick | Stars: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey
Votes: 375,327 | Gross: $75.08M
Tim Burton's cult animated classic is the perfect bridge between the Halloween and Christmas seasons. Considering there is a catchy song called "This is Halloween", how can you not include it on the list? Despite countless attempts by Hot Topic to murder the film's reputation, it remains a vastly praise worthy film.
5. May (2002)
R | 93 min | Drama, Horror
A socially awkward veterinary assistant with a lazy eye and obsession with perfection descends into depravity after developing a crush on a boy with perfect hands.
Director: Lucky McKee | Stars: Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, James Duval
Votes: 40,522 | Gross: $0.15M
The beginning of collaborations between the haunting Angela Bettis and kooky Lucky McKee. May isn't necessarily scary, but its definitely quirky and inexorably a horror film. Its Halloween roots don't really blossom until near the end, but this is the perfect film for carving a link between funny and scary. It may build slow, but the end reward is well worth the wait.
6. Ginger Snaps (2000)
Not Rated | 108 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Two death-obsessed sisters, outcasts in their suburban neighborhood, must deal with the tragic consequences when one of them is bitten by a deadly werewolf.
Director: John Fawcett | Stars: Emily Perkins, Katharine Isabelle, Kris Lemche, Mimi Rogers
Votes: 52,329 | Gross: $0.00M
Don't let the massive metaphor for puberty scare you off. Ginger Snaps is probably the best contemporary werewolf film post-American Werewolf in London and truly has a lot going for it. Culminating scenes involving a Halloween party and a full moon bring it square into the realm of the season. Great effects, a fun script, and memorable characters really drives this film home.
7. Satan's Little Helper (2004)
R | 96 min | Comedy, Horror
A naive young boy unknowingly becomes the pawn of a serial killer.
Director: Jeff Lieberman | Stars: Alexander Brickel, Katheryn Winnick, Stephen Graham, Amanda Plummer
Votes: 6,524
The box cover and title scream bad B-grade horror so loud that it took me six years to finally watch Satan's Little Helper. Yet, off-beat director Jeff Lieberman delivers a truly engrossing film that seems to embody the term quirky. Sure everything is bad, but in that awesome way where you know it had to be intentional. Don't let this film scare you away, its best handled with some beer and raucous friends. The fact that its all taking place on Hell Night makes it perfect for getting amped before Halloween.
8. Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981 TV Movie)
Not Rated | 96 min | Horror
In a small Southern town, four vigilantes wrongfully execute a mentally-challenged man, but after the court sets them free mysterious "accidents" begin to kill them off one by one.
Director: Frank De Felitta | Stars: Charles Durning, Robert F. Lyons, Claude Earl Jones, Lane Smith
Votes: 8,217
A TV movie? Yeap. A damn good one at that. Dark Night of the Scarecrow takes the premise of Of Mice and Men into the realms of the killer scarecrow subgenre. Original deaths, a great score, and some surprisingly good acting elevates this beyond its low budget TV movie base. Set around Halloween and featuring plenty of pumpkin patches, its a blessing that its finally made it to DVD and Blu-Ray.
9. Lady in White (1988)
PG-13 | 113 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery
An author tells the story of how, as a young boy growing up in a 1960s small town, he was haunted after witnessing the murder of a little girl.
Director: Frank LaLoggia | Stars: Lukas Haas, Len Cariou, Alex Rocco, Katherine Helmond
Votes: 8,058 | Gross: $1.71M
Despite a PG-13 rating, Lady in White is a massively scary film and has haunted many unsuspecting viewers. Beginning on Halloween it moves forward into a child's investigation of a real world inspired ghost story. Fraught with tension between the supernatural ghosts and all too real killer, it wracks adults and children alike with suspense.
10. Idle Hands (1999)
R | 92 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
A teenage slacker's right hand becomes possessed with murderous intent.
Director: Rodman Flender | Stars: Devon Sawa, Seth Green, Elden Henson, Jessica Alba
Votes: 46,781 | Gross: $4.00M
Taking some heavy cues from An American Werewolf in London (1981) and Evil Dead II (1987), Idle Hands deploys a pre-fame Jessica Alba to sex up a twisted monster flick about a diabolical hand. It never takes itself seriously and neither should the audience. A fun romp into teen horror country with all the prerequisite sex appeal and gratuitous nudity. The best part is Alba dressed as one of the sexiest angels this side of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
11. Night of the Demons (1988)
R | 90 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
Ten teenagers party at an abandoned funeral parlor on Halloween night. When an evil force awakens, demonic spirits keep them from leaving and turn their gathering into a living Hell.
Director: Kevin Tenney | Stars: Cathy Podewell, Alvin Alexis, Hal Havins, Allison Barron
Votes: 19,158 | Gross: $3.11M
80's demon possession film doing what they do best. Awful acting, ridiculous effects, and an abhorrent script all somehow work to elevate this into the realm of awesomely bad. Nothing like watching a Halloween party getting killed by ridiculous creatures. Worth watching for the lipstick scene alone. Might enjoy Hell Night (1981) as well if you're trying to round out an awesomely bad 80's horror night.
