Underappreciated Gen-X Comedies

by MasterBrock | created - 08 Nov 2011 | updated - 20 Apr 2012 | Public

Comedy is one of those things that is appreciated on a different level than almost any other genre. Comedians have wax estaticed on that point for decades now. Yet even amongst comedy lovers there seems to be a divide over whats funny and whats garbage. Here's some films that embody the Generation X milieu from the mid 90's and beyond.

1. PCU (1994)

PG-13 | 79 min | Comedy

42 Metascore

A high school senior visits college for the weekend, and stays at the wildest house on campus.

Director: Hart Bochner | Stars: Jeremy Piven, Chris Young, Megan Ward, Jon Favreau

Votes: 14,516 | Gross: $4.35M

Everyone seems to know Jeremy Piven from Entourage (2004), but I've always seen him as the suspiciously old college student from PCU. Structured like National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) it deviates from the formula by shifting the focus off the ridiculousness of the frat house to the utter awfulness of political correctness. David Spade gives a pretty funny performance and looks even fresher than his break out role in Tommy Boy (1995). Gen-X Connection: Dealing with Political Correctness

2. Big Trouble (2002)

PG-13 | 85 min | Comedy, Crime, Thriller

47 Metascore

The lives of several Miami denizens, from ad agents to gunrunners to street thugs to law enforcement to school-children, intersect with humorous and dangerous results.

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld | Stars: Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci, Tom Sizemore

Votes: 21,661 | Gross: $7.26M

The adaptation of Dave Barry's hilarious sunshine noir novel is a legitimately fun absurdist work. Unfortunately its release date was 9/21/2001 and the events 10 days prior made its plot involving a bomb and an airplane beyond box office poison. It eventually found a release a year later, but was given the ten foot pole treatment by the studio. The film still remains relatively unheard of, but funny none the less. A great cast that featured proven and soon to be stars such as Tim Allen, Zooey Deschanel, and Jason Lee. Gen-X Connection: Changing View of Work & Government

3. Grandma's Boy (2006)

R | 94 min | Comedy

33 Metascore

A thirty-five-year-old video game tester has to move in with his grandma and her two old lady roommates.

Director: Nicholaus Goossen | Stars: Allen Covert, Linda Cardellini, Shirley Jones, Peter Dante

Votes: 88,587 | Gross: $6.09M

The funniest Happy Madison movie to come out since 2000 and it doesn't even star Adam Sandler. Frequent Sandler side-player Allen Covert stepped into the limelight and brought out some off-beat jokes aimed at the gamer demographic. A strong supporting class of both young and old actors pushing each other further and further into the comedic zone with surprising chemistry between unlikely pairings such as Shirley Jones and Nick Swardson. Gen-X Connection: Coping with "Living up to your Potential"

4. Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

R | 97 min | Comedy, Romance

42 Metascore

Set on the last day of camp, in the hot summer of 1981, a group of counselors try to complete their unfinished business before the day ends.

Director: David Wain | Stars: Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter, Marguerite Moreau

Votes: 60,545 | Gross: $0.29M

I've never decided if I liked this spoof of camp movies because I actually worked at a summer camp or because of The State (1993) alum. Its goofy and definitely a film that I didn't fully appreciate at first. Over time its grown on me and nailing certain aspects of the summer camp meta definitely helped sell it. A bevy of future stars teamed with some old ones for a truly diverse cast including Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and David Hyde Pierce. Gen-X Connection: Atypical Gen-X Coming of Age

5. Half Baked (1998)

R | 82 min | Comedy, Crime

16 Metascore

The story of three not so bright men who come up with a series of crazy schemes to get a friend out of jail.

Director: Tamra Davis | Stars: Dave Chappelle, Guillermo Diaz, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams

Votes: 67,856 | Gross: $17.28M

Long before he got his own show, Dave Chappelle was bringing the funny in this stoner comedy. A perfect blend of good old fashioned pot humor, non-overwhelming movie spoofs and ingenious cameos. Bob Saget drops the mother of all surprising appearances and is a perfect representation of his insanely obscene stand-up act that tears apart his Full House (1987) persona. Gen-X Connection: Coping with growing up.

6. Down Periscope (1996)

PG-13 | 92 min | Comedy

39 Metascore

Lt. Cmdr. Tom Dodge is assigned as Captain to the USS Stingray, an old diesel driven submarine that has seen better days.

Director: David S. Ward | Stars: Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly, Rob Schneider, Harry Dean Stanton

Votes: 26,703 | Gross: $25.79M

Perhaps just a guilty pleasure, but Down Periscope has long been one of my favorite movies. Ranking right in there with serious films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and The Big Lebowski (1998). Its a safe by the numbers misfit comedy, but for some reason its always resonated with me. I still talk like a pirate for a couple of days anytime I watch it and wish I was man enough for a "Welcome Aboard" tatoo.

7. Let's Go to Prison (2006)

R | 84 min | Comedy, Crime

27 Metascore

When a career criminal's plan for revenge is thwarted by unlikely circumstances, he puts his intended victim's son in his place by putting him in prison...and then joining him.

Director: Bob Odenkirk | Stars: Dax Shepard, Will Arnett, Chi McBride, David Koechner

Votes: 26,483 | Gross: $4.61M

Massively underrated and appreciated. Bob Odenkirk directs a seriously funny film that manages to be both outrageous and subtle at the same time. Chi McBride steals every scene he's in and drops some massively hilarious lines. Most surprising is its refusal to needlessly spoof jail flicks and make anal rape look like something best enjoyed with a nice pinot grigio.

8. Idiocracy (2006)

R | 84 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

Corporal Joe Bauers, a decidedly average American, is selected for a top-secret hibernation program but is forgotten and left to awaken to a future so incredibly moronic that he's easily the most intelligent person alive.

Director: Mike Judge | Stars: Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, Terry Crews

Votes: 182,646 | Gross: $0.44M

The first time I watched Mike Judge's follow-up to the cult classic Office Space (1999) I hated it. A second chance viewing egged on by the insistence of my brother quickly reversed my opinion of this even culter classic. Idiocracy is legitatemly funny even if its in juvenille way. One of the few movies I can watch over and over again. A great way to see dick and fart jokes elevated to a whole other level.

9. Clerks II (2006)

R | 97 min | Comedy

65 Metascore

A calamity at Dante and Randal's shops sends them looking for new horizons - but they ultimately settle at the fast food empire Mooby's.

Director: Kevin Smith | Stars: Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Rosario Dawson, Jason Mewes

Votes: 140,714 | Gross: $24.15M

The sequel to Kevin Smith's breakout film Clerks (1994) came 12 years later and to far fewer praise. Clerks II stands apart from the original as a vastly different film from a man in a vastly different time of his life. There's a lot to love with witty dialouge, taboo situations and of course Smith's classic pandering to his own fans.

10. Observe and Report (2009)

R | 86 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

54 Metascore

Bi-polar mall security guard Ronnie Barnhardt is called into action to stop a flasher from turning shopper's paradise into his personal peep show. But when Barnhardt can't bring the culprit to justice, a surly police detective is recruited to close the case.

Director: Jody Hill | Stars: Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Ray Liotta, Michael Peña

Votes: 65,303 | Gross: $23.99M

Timed far too closely to the release of Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), it became known as the other mall cop movie. Seth Rogen delivers a very unsettling performance in an ultra dark comedy. I wasn't fully sold on the film while watching it until the culminating chase scene which seemed like a rare perfect moment in cinema. The movie also happened to break my long standing belief that no one should even attempt to cover a Pixies song.

11. Saved! (2004)

PG-13 | 92 min | Comedy, Drama

62 Metascore

When a girl attending a Christian high school becomes pregnant, all of her former friends turn on her and she is ostracized and demonized.

Director: Brian Dannelly | Stars: Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Patrick Fugit

Votes: 49,007 | Gross: $8.94M

A twisted look at a Catholic high school brings some very funny moments coupled with intriguing characters. Pixie Jena Malone drives home a cute performance, while Macaulay Culkin steals every scene. After watching this film, I've really wondered why he hasn't transformed into a legitimate star during his adult years. If you're a fan of irreverent comedies this should be right up your alley.
