Personal Favorite Movies of Mine

by DaveMuto | created - 19 May 2012 | updated - 19 May 2012 | Public

Movies that I (and many others) agree are great films, but overall this is mostly a subjective list on my part; I'm just curious to see how many people on this site agree! This list will grow overtime as usual, I can't put down and analyze every favorite movie of mine all at once. Expect...maybe 5-10 new entries every week?

1. The Thing (1982)

R | 109 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

57 Metascore

A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Richard Masur

Votes: 466,505 | Gross: $13.78M

Isolationism at it's best. No female lead (not knocking on the 2011 prequel by saying that,) just a party of hostile, scared, testosterone and adrenaline driven men looking to survive and not sure who among their party they should trust. The thriller/mystery aspect has never been combined with alien terror in a better way, imho.

2. The 400 Blows (1959)

Not Rated | 99 min | Crime, Drama

A young boy, left without attention, delves into a life of petty crime.

Director: François Truffaut | Stars: Jean-Pierre Léaud, Albert Rémy, Claire Maurier, Guy Decomble

Votes: 128,058

A foreign film that encapsulates the innocence of a child that we could all relate to at one point no matter what our cultural background is. This film provides a great argument that we as humans are relatively the same, and anyone who watches can relate to the ignorance of the children while they commit petty crimes, unaware of how serious the repercussions can be.

3. Mr. Saturday Night (1992)

R | 119 min | Comedy, Drama

The life of Buddy Young, a comic legend in flashbacks but an old man looking for work in the present.

Director: Billy Crystal | Stars: Billy Crystal, David Paymer, Julie Warner, Helen Hunt

Votes: 6,340 | Gross: $13.35M

Who better to write and star in a movie about a classic comedian who has trouble fitting into the new wave of 90's stand up comedy than someone who, actually had no trouble fitting in, but probably saw it happen to countless amounts of his colleagues. Not to mention, the subplot between him and his brother is heart wrenching. A film that shines on multiple levels.

4. Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

R | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

78 Metascore

Socially frustrated Barry Egan calls a phone-sex line to curb his loneliness. Little does he know it will land him in deep trouble and will jeopardize his burgeoning romance with the mysterious Lena.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Andrews

Votes: 177,401 | Gross: $17.84M

Oddly enough, Paul Thomas Anderson took the usual neurosis and anger problems the typical Adam Sandler character has and transformed it into more than a one dimensional neanderthal. Proof that under the write direction, any actor can shine, and Sandler beams in this once in a life time combination of a comedic legend and a cinematic visionary.

5. Goodfellas (1990)

R | 145 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

92 Metascore

The story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco

Votes: 1,257,072 | Gross: $46.84M

Corruption, murder, deceit, betrayal, all with a backdrop of hilarious back and forths between the two most psychotic characters in the film, Robert De Niro's Jimmy Conway and Joe Pesci's Tommy Devito. The montage where dead bodies start turning up after the massive Lufthansa heist over the ending of Leila by Eric Clapton is cinematic gold. Oh, and every other minute of this movie is too.

6. Blood Diamond (2006)

R | 143 min | Adventure, Drama, Thriller

64 Metascore

A fisherman, a smuggler, and a syndicate of businessmen match wits over the possession of a priceless diamond.

Director: Edward Zwick | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, Jennifer Connelly, Kagiso Kuypers

Votes: 585,989 | Gross: $57.37M

What comes off as a typical action movie combined with a social message turns into a journey with the two protagonists, where whether you like movies with strong social overtones or not, you almost forget about them during DiCaprio's final monologue, or one of Djimon Hounsou many emotional, and sometimes violent outbursts; both characters crumbling under the pressure of trying to escape their oppressive homes for different, but both valid reasons. One ultimately finds redemption, the other, his family.

7. No Country for Old Men (2007)

R | 122 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

92 Metascore

Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong and over two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande.

Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen | Stars: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson

Votes: 1,059,969 | Gross: $74.28M

Bad guys have gotten away before, but none like this. Watch the whole movie, you never shake the feeling that Sugar is in control of everything and everyone either after him, or running from him. He is truly a master of his craft, survival any cost.

8. District 9 (2009)

R | 112 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

81 Metascore

Violence ensues after an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth finds a kindred spirit in a government agent exposed to their biotechnology.

Director: Neill Blomkamp | Stars: Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope, Vanessa Haywood

Votes: 716,734 | Gross: $115.65M

The whole movie is great, but did you ever think an ending in a Sci-fi action movie could make you tear up? Watch this *beep* movie, I don't want to give anything away, as every scene makes the ending all the more powerful.

9. Pulp Fiction (1994)

R | 154 min | Crime, Drama

95 Metascore

The lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis

Votes: 2,219,662 | Gross: $107.93M

Not much to say here. Well the characters at times say more then they need to, but that doesn't matter once the iconic scenes in this movie pop up and push you back into your seat. Sam Jackson's career defining role, John Travolta's come back, Uma Thurman's big break, Tim Roth's big break. Need I say more?

10. RoboCop (1987)

R | 102 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

70 Metascore

In a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories.

Director: Paul Verhoeven | Stars: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox

Votes: 283,029 | Gross: $53.42M

Ever wonder why everyone hates cops? It's because everyone forgets the very 1st objective programmed into Robocop's design; serve the public trust. When he's a machine, Robocop is out to protect the people of this dystopian version of Detroit. When he realizes he was once human, with a loving family and whole life that's now been left behind, the dramatic aspect unfolds, especially when he takes the mask off, feels his face and says to his partner "I can't feel anything." This movie goes deeper than many would think, and it's worth a watch on a rainy night should you have the chance.

11. Inception (2010)

PG-13 | 148 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

74 Metascore

A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Ken Watanabe

Votes: 2,550,368 | Gross: $292.58M

A visually stunning tale of master criminals with a subplot that involves a tragic love story, and has you guessing throughout where reality begins and ends. Adding even the smallest amount of detail related to the plot would simply lead me to tell the whole story. Watch it, live it, and you'll never forget it.

12. The Prestige (2006)

PG-13 | 130 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

After a tragic accident, two stage magicians in 1890s London engage in a battle to create the ultimate illusion while sacrificing everything they have to outwit each other.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine

Votes: 1,440,940 | Gross: $53.09M

Surprisingly less linear in terms of story telling than Inception was, but takes its themes to an equally cosmic level. A rivalry between two magicians reaches into the depths of obsession, devotion, deception, and murder (way more "people" die in this movie, if you the last scene makes sense to you.) A great movie, having you go back and forth between who's the better/sicker magician, until the prestige to their own ambitions are revealed. The conclusion will have you look at a particular actor in a way only one other movie has done before.
