THE DEFINITIVE LIST OF CANCELLED & RUMORED MOVIE SEQUELS

by rogerdemarco30 | created - 03 Apr 2019 | updated - 2 days ago | Public

*9/21/23 UPDATE* IMDB is currently having issues with saving the order of numbered titles. I hope it's resolved soon. For best results.... sort the list by Alphabetical Order.

I thought it would be interesting to make a list that displayed all of the sequels and remakes that are rumored / confirmed to be in development.... or have been cancelled over the years. There are numerous reasons why some of these projects have remained in development hell.... but the most notable one would be that they were just deemed to be too risky from a financial perspective.

On the possibility of a sequel.... director Shane Acker stated ---- "I think there is definitely room. I mean.... the way we end the film.... there is a slight suggestion that it may be a new beginning. And I think we could continue the journey from where we left off and see how these creatures are existing in a world in which the natural environment is coming back and perhaps even threatening them in some way. Do they make the decision to not affect it.... or do they try to affect it in some way? And do they still try to hold on to that humanity within them or do they recognize themselves at being machines too and go off on a different trajectory? So there's lots of idea that I think that we could play with and make another story out of."

The possibilities for a 9 sequel were also brought up in the film's DVD commentary. Acker has also mentioned the possibility of a sequel being made because of the lack of darker animated films, claiming that everything is G and PG-rated with little to no dark elements. He also stated that he will continue to make darker animated films.... either doing so with a sequel to 9.... or original ideas for future films. Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Jaden Smith, David Denman, Will Smith, Sophie Okonedo

Votes: 208,957 | Gross: $60.52M

The story about Will Smith's plans for an AFTER EARTH shared universe is told by Ben Fritz in his book The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies. He's spent countless hours combing through documents released as a result of the Sony hack in 2014.... and as a result.... he's pieced together a lot of the behind-the-scenes drama at Sony Pictures. In the case of AFTER EARTH.... he uncovered the sheer scale of Will Smith's ambitions. Smith had recognized that the age of 'star vehicles' was coming to an end.... and that moviegoers were now more invested in franchises than they were in stars. As a result, he envisioned AFTER EARTH as the beginning of a project he called '1000 AE'. He worked with a team of writers to create a 294-page bible detailing a thousand years of history.... explaining what had happened to Earth's survivors. As he described it in Overbrook's pitching document:

"Each generation discovers a world that connects with them on a visceral and emotional level... their appetite for revisiting that world is endless and as they grow older.... the attraction continues to grow stronger. STAR TREK....STAR WARS.... INDIANA JONES....LORD OF THE RINGS....and HARRY POTTER have all reached such stature ....and now they are being joined by 1000 AD."

Smith even hoped this would rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The celebrated actor didn't just approach Sony with the pitch for a single film; he detailed plans for a sequel.... a live-action TV show.... an animated series.... webisodes.... mobisodes…. a video game…. consumer products.... theme-park attractions …. documentaries.... comics.... an educational program in partnership with NASA.... merchandise such as cologne and perfume.... and even an AE branded social network. Smith intended to create an incredibly immersive experience.... one that would use transmedia elements to become the center of fans' online lives.

When the production was formally announced for the fifth film in the series.... Bruce Willis expressed his desire to retire the John McClane character in a sixth and final film. By September 2017.... Wiseman publicly floated that he was casting for a young version of John McClane for his self-penned origin story called JOHN MCCLANE.... whose plot was rumored to borrow heavily from the DIE HARD: YEAR ONE comic book mini-series. Six months later.... the studio enlisted duo Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes to re-write the screenplay after Bruce Willis refused to endorse the previous edition and its actor.

In July 2018.... producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura submitted an updated treatment titled MCCLANE.... further confirming that the storyline features elements of McClane's and Holly's characters in the 1970s.... intermixed with their present-day counterparts. The following month.... Wiseman stated that pre-production on the new film should start "fairly soon.... no dates" once the script has been completed. Tobey Maguire joined the production team late Summer 2018. By December 2018.... di Bonaventura handed in yet another draft.... this time without input from Willis. Production designer Carol Uraneck…. who was hired in September 2018.... later left the project by the close of the year.

In February 2019.... the production team made a revision to the writing.... insinuating that the project.... though supposedly moving forward.... is on the studio's backburner.... as evidenced by executives not even having read the script yet. Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead said that she would be interested in returning as Lucy Gennero-McClane in a future installment.... but later intimated doubt that.... due to scheduling.... if the film would ever get made.

DIE HARD was removed from the Fox imprint through at least its 2021 slate.... after Disney's acquisition and senior management shake-up.... which saw the dismissal of its theatrical distribution executive.... Chris Aronson. The production was later cancelled outright in August 2019 after further consideration by Disney. In lieu of the reorganization of both companies.... the media giant is said to be rebooting development of McClane for streaming as a television series.

DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Safran said there was potential for Momoa to reprise his role in the DCU.... but a decision had not been made. No actor would be playing multiple characters.... so if they did cast Momoa as Lobo he would not portray AQUAMAN in the DCU. Safran expressed interest in continuing to work with Momoa.... either within the world of AQUAMAN or finding another character. He explained that they set a high bar for casting.... and felt that Momoa's AQUAMAN was a perfect casting.

In September 2023.... Gunn clarified that any DC media released before the first projects for the DCU in 2024 would not be canon to that franchise.... leading commentators to question the possibility of a potential continuation moving forward. Wan said THE LOST KINGDOM would help set up a sequel and expressed interest in directing it after a long break. The following month.... Variety reported that none of the main cast members from Zack Snyder's DCEU films would reprise their roles in the DCU.... including Momoa as AQUAMAN. However.... Momoa had reportedly been in talks to portray Lobo in either SUPERMAN or a solo film for the character.

Ahead of The Lost Kingdom's release in December 2023.... Momoa said it could be his final performance as AQUAMAN.... explaining that if the film was received well by audiences that a sequel could be possible.... but he felt it was "not looking too good" for him reprising the role. The actor said he had a lot of ideas for the character.... and indicated that a younger character.... such as Arthur Jr.... could be featured in a potential third AQUAMAN film. He also said that he would not be replaced with a different actor as AQUAMAN. Safran said at that time that Momoa would "always have a home at DC" and that "we'll see what happens with him beyond this film."
