The Anime Movie list. Best of the Best!

by rhymelyric | created - 08 Jun 2013 | updated - 11 May 2017 | Public

Even if you don't like anime, I strongly suggest you expand your horizons and watch these. This is a list of the best Anime Movies I have ever seen. Subsequently, they are some of the best movies I have ever seen period. The list is in order from best to least best but all these are so good that the question of what titles should top the list is highly subjective especially regarding the top five.

Be sure to leave a comment if you think of something I might want to add or to direct me to your Anime list.

1. Akira (1988)

R | 124 min | Animation, Action, Drama

68 Metascore

A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by a teenager, his gang of biker friends and a group of psychics.

Director: Katsuhiro Ôtomo | Stars: Mitsuo Iwata, Nozomu Sasaki, Mami Koyama, Tesshô Genda

Votes: 205,310 | Gross: $0.55M

Like a fine wine, this movie seems to get better with age. Possibly the best movie to come out in the 80's animated or otherwise. Visually stunning, incredible story, likable characters, and an chain of events that are unpredictable without being confusing. What more can you ask for. I watch this once every few weeks.

2. Ghost in the Shell (1995)

TV-MA | 83 min | Animation, Action, Crime

76 Metascore

A cyborg policewoman and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master.

Directors: Mizuho Nishikubo, Mamoru Oshii | Stars: Atsuko Tanaka, Iemasa Kayumi, Akio Ôtsuka, Kôichi Yamadera

Votes: 156,940 | Gross: $0.52M

(Contains Nudity) Visually this is even better than Akira but then again, it's a later release. In fact, this is visually the best animated movie I've ever seen to date (though Metropolis comes very close), watching this is like watching a painting that moves. I said my list is subjective, and you will see G.i.t.S. listed as the best anime ever on many list but I feel that Akira is more re-watachable ( due to Akira's perfect placement of lighter humor to off set it's otherwise serious tone). For the most part, people who love an anime's imagery over it's story and characters will prefer G.i.t.S over Akira.

3. Ninja Scroll (1993)

Not Rated | 94 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A vagabond swordsman is aided by a kunoichi and a spy in battling a demonic clan of killers - led by a ghost from his past - who are bent on overthrowing the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Director: Yoshiaki Kawajiri | Stars: Kôichi Yamadera, Emi Shinohara, Takeshi Aono, Osamu Saka

Votes: 40,736

(Contains Nudity) If the number of times I've watched a movie dictated it's placement on this list then this would be Best Anime by a long shot. I watch this movie about 3 times a week on average, I never get tired of it. While it's not in the same league visually as 1,2, or 4 on this list, it is very good in it's own right, you just might not wish you could take a screen shot and hang it on your wall like you will with Ghost in the Shell. The main problem I have with this movie is the story in characters are repeated ( literally cloned) in so many other samurai style anime. Vampire Hunter D is Ninja Scroll except darker and with vampires and the Afro Samurai series is Ninja Scroll that is even darker, with less humor, an afro, and broken into episodes. That being said, all of the ninja scroll clones are top anime's, you just might find yourself thinking "have I seen this before?".

4. Metropolis (2001)

PG-13 | 108 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama

75 Metascore

Kenichi and his uncle Shunsaku Ban must find the mystery behind robot girl Tima.

Director: Rintarô | Stars: Toshio Furukawa, Scott Weinger, Yuka Imoto, Kei Kobayashi

Votes: 22,620 | Gross: $0.64M

Made by some of the same people who made Akira. Visually the best animated movie since Ghost in the Shell (and has not been surpassed because computer animation has apparently made anime art directors lazy). Similar to Akira in some respects but you wont recognize any characters. This movie along with Akira and G.i.t.S. are the best Sci-fi movies of the 80's,90's, and 2000's. Many of the best live action Sci-fi movies have taken lots of ideals from these anime.

5. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (I) (2004)

PG-13 | 100 min | Animation, Drama, Mystery

68 Metascore

In the year 2032, Batô, a cyborg detective for the anti-terrorist unit Public Security Section 9, investigates the case of a female robot--one created solely for sexual pleasure--who slaughtered her owner.

Directors: Naoko Kusumi, Mizuho Nishikubo, Mamoru Oshii | Stars: Akio Ôtsuka, Atsuko Tanaka, Tamio Ôki, Kôichi Yamadera

Votes: 40,316 | Gross: $1.04M

Visually a match to it's predecessor. It's down to 7th best because at certain points the movie's creators seem content to just flexing their proverbial visual art muscles and the story feels like an after thought. It's also a lot harder to follow then the original so some audiences might find themselves hopelessly loss. It is still is a top tier story once you catch up.

6. Fist of the North Star (1986)

Not Rated | 110 min | Animation, Action, Drama

In a post-nuclear hellscape, a master of the deadly martial art "Hokuto Shinken" allies with two kids and an expert in "Nanto Suicho-Ken" to battle the tyrants who kidnapped his lover.

Director: Toyoo Ashida | Stars: Akira Kamiya, Yuriko Yamamoto, Kenji Utsumi, Chikao Ôtsuka

Votes: 7,293

Old school animation. Before Akira, this is how anime looked... and I like it. If you like Dragon Ball Z than you'll love this because it's obvious that this anime is where much of that later series fight animation, character, and scenery design comes from. (Caution kiddies, this is much more violent and gory than DBZ)

7. Spirited Away (2001)

PG | 125 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

96 Metascore

During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Miyu Irino, Rumi Hiiragi

Votes: 849,820 | Gross: $10.06M

Good wholesome fun with great visuals and awesome characters. I thought I was going to hate it but it sucked me in like a diaper to a jet ski engine.

8. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)

R | 103 min | Animation, Action, Drama

62 Metascore

A legendary dhampir competes with a motley family of bounty hunters to return a young woman, who has been seemingly abducted by a vampire, to her family.

Director: Yoshiaki Kawajiri | Stars: Andrew Philpot, John Rafter Lee, Pamela Adlon, Wendee Lee

Votes: 35,820 | Gross: $0.15M

Literally the same characters as Ninja Scroll, re-imagened as vampire hunters and demons then placed in a overall darker package. Still makes my top 10 (a testament to how good the Ninja Scroll story is).

9. Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993)

TV-14 | 113 min | Animation, Action, Drama

When a terrorist attack is blamed on the Air Force, Special Vehicle Unit 2 gets caught in the middle of a growing political conflict.

Directors: Mamoru Oshii, Mizuho Nishikubo | Stars: Mîna Tominaga, Briony Glassco, Julie Ann Taylor, Toshio Furukawa

Votes: 4,597

Complex storyline, interesting characters, great scenery, and music to match it all. This is what live action political dramas should be but most aren't.

10. Sword of the Stranger (2007)

Not Rated | 103 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A swordsman from a strange land is caught in a struggle between morality, righteousness, and devotion as he reluctantly agrees to take a raggedy boy and his dog to a remote, Buddhist temple.

Director: Masahiro Andô | Stars: Tomoya Nagase, Yuri Chinen, Kôichi Yamadera, Akio Ôtsuka

Votes: 18,307

The best samurai movie since Ninja Scroll. I personally hate the animation though, it looks too cartoonish for an anime. If you can get past the animation then you'll love it say I underrated it, if you're like me then you probably won't watch it all that often. Regardless you can't deny the story which is why it's top 10.

11. Kite (1998)

TV-MA | 50 min | Animation, Action, Crime

A young girl, orphaned at an early age, carries out assassinations at the behest of her mentor.

Stars: Konami Yoshida, Kinryû Arimoto, Kôsuke Okano, Tatsuo Matoba

Votes: 5,319

(Contains Nudity and graphic sex acts) Similar to Leon the Professional except without Leon and the girl actually becomes a killer and the hinted to sexual relationship isn't hinted to but instead displayed in detail. Actually, it's nothing like Leon the Professional..... you just have to watch it. Not for kiddies at all.

12. Pom Poko (1994)

PG | 119 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

77 Metascore

A community of magical shape-shifting raccoon dogs struggle to prevent their forest home from being destroyed by urban development.

Director: Isao Takahata | Stars: Shinchô Kokontei, Makoto Nonomura, Yuriko Ishida, Norihei Miki

Votes: 34,607

(Contains Nudity) This is one of the weirdest most awesome anime I have ever seen. It has a anti-deforestation message and will leave most rotfl at some points and crying at others. If you watch it with your kids though, they will be asking all types of question that you may not want to answer.

13. Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

PG | 119 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

82 Metascore

When an unconfident young woman is cursed with an old body by a spiteful witch, her only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions in his legged, walking castle.

Director: Mamoru Hosoda | Stars: Riisa Naka, Takuya Ishida, Mitsutaka Itakura, Ayami Kakiuchi

Votes: 70,884

15. Mezzo Forte (2000–2001)

Not Rated | 80 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

A young woman and her mercenary for hire team run afoul of a violent mob boss and his sociopath daughter.

Stars: Tomoko Kotani, Takumi Yamazaki, Taichirô Hirokawa, Shôzô Îzuka

Votes: 1,538

(Contains Nudity and graphic sex acts) Action, adventure, and more action, oh and a little sex thrown in just to shock goodie goodies. Definitely not for kids.

16. Vampire Hunter D (1985)

Not Rated | 80 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy
