100 "Larger Than Life Films" by Peter von Bagh
by FilmCuckoo | created - 17 May 2016 | updated - 10 months ago | PublicPeter von Bagh, (1943-2014) a Finnish, internationally acknowledged film critic and scholar, director and journalist, started in 1984 a 100 episode radio series for Finnish National Broadcasting Company (YLE), where each 60 minute episode presented one film he truly believed to be "Larger Than Life". He would analyze each film in exhaustive detail and in undressing depth, utilizing his trademark style of colourful language and witty anachronisms.
These 100 films are presented on this list in the original chronological order they appear in the two accompanying books for the radio series. (Please use "Sort by List Order".)
Since 2001, he had been the artistic director of the film festival "Il Cinema Ritrovato" in Bologna, Italy, the world's most prestigious retrospective film festival. He was also a member of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival jury, and was the co-founder and the creative director for the non-competitive "Midnight Sun Film Festival" from 1986 until his death in 2014. The Festival is still alive and well, and is still held annually at Sodankylä, Finland, currently being the world's most northern film festival. Thanks to von Bagh's international contacts, this very down to earth, tiny and modest film festival has had some of the greatest directors of our time as guests at this unique film-soiree, including Francis Ford Coppola, Agnes Varda, Samuel Fuller, Emir Kusturica, etc.
