Directors: Wolfgang Reitherman, David Hand | Stars: Brian Bedford, Phil Harris, Roger Miller, Peter Ustinov

Votes: 138,966 | Gross: $32.06M

It’s the best. Hiss, the extraordinary snake - probably my favorite film character ever.

2. My Summer of Love (2004)

R | 86 min | Drama, Romance

82 Metascore

In the Yorkshire countryside, working-class tomboy Mona meets the exotic, pampered Tamsin. Over the summer season, the two young women discover they have much to teach one another, and much to explore together.

Director: Pawel Pawlikowski | Stars: Natalie Press, Emily Blunt, Paddy Considine, Dean Andrews

Votes: 21,790 | Gross: $0.99M

I find it profoundly moving. The performances were stunningly honest. Pawel Pawlikowski is a director that I find intriguing; I have heard he throws lines over the top of the camera in order to get you to improvise.

3. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

R | 100 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

84 Metascore

An examination of the machinations behind the scenes at a real estate office.

Director: James Foley | Stars: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin

Votes: 116,289 | Gross: $10.73M

The most staggering film cast ever, and every single actor firing on all cylinders in a way that I left and wanted to give up.

4. Chariots of Fire (1981)

PG | 125 min | Biography, Drama, Sport

78 Metascore

Two British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, are driven to win in the 1924 Olympics as they wrestle with issues of pride and conscience.

Director: Hugh Hudson | Stars: Ben Cross, Ian Charleson, Nicholas Farrell, Nigel Havers

Votes: 65,912 | Gross: $58.97M

One of my mom and dad’s favorites when we were kids so we watched it endlessly. I’ve even been to the beach in St. Andrews in Scotland where they shot and tried running down the beach with my head thrown back, slightly obsessing.

5. Pretty Woman (1990)

R | 119 min | Comedy, Romance

51 Metascore

A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets... only to fall in love.

Director: Garry Marshall | Stars: Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, Jason Alexander, Laura San Giacomo

Votes: 362,752 | Gross: $178.41M

Another one of my parents’ favorites. I still find it an utterly genius bit of filmmaking.

6. The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005)

Not Rated | 108 min | Crime, Drama, Music

75 Metascore

Will Thomas still lead a life of crime and cruelty, just like his thuggish father, or will he pursue his dream of becoming a pianist?

Director: Jacques Audiard | Stars: Romain Duris, Aure Atika, Emmanuelle Devos, Niels Arestrup

Votes: 20,498 | Gross: $1.02M

Roman Duris was a young De Niro in that film and I found it totally extraordinary.

7. Giant (1956)

G | 201 min | Drama, Western

84 Metascore

Sprawling epic covering the life of a Texas cattle rancher and his family and associates.

Director: George Stevens | Stars: Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, Carroll Baker

Votes: 42,260

I had always thought that James Dean as this good looking [actor] with this iconic flavor about him, but when you see Giant - he’s only 23 years old when he made that film and he plays from age 10 through to his 40s/50s. His transformation is amazing.

8. Before Sunset (2004)

R | 80 min | Drama, Romance

91 Metascore

Nine years after Jesse and Celine first met, they encounter each other again on the French leg of Jesse's book tour.

Director: Richard Linklater | Stars: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Vernon Dobtcheff, Louise Lemoine Torrès

Votes: 287,957 | Gross: $5.82M

I saw this one first and have seen the other ones since; for me, this second one - I was caught so off-guard by it and I found it profound in its simplicity.

9. Reds (1981)

PG | 195 min | Biography, Drama, History

76 Metascore

A radical American journalist becomes involved with the Communist revolution in Russia, and hopes to bring its spirit and idealism to the United States.

Director: Warren Beatty | Stars: Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Edward Herrmann, Jerzy Kosinski

Votes: 24,722 | Gross: $40.38M

I saw it when I was preparing for a meeting a few years ago. This idea of when films had intervals - it is absolutely gigantic in its scope and scale. It’s rigorous and I think it challenges its audience - there’s no dumbing down. And the performances are immaculate.

10. The Rock (1996)

R | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

58 Metascore

A mild-mannered chemist and an ex-con must lead the counterstrike when a rogue group of military men, led by a renegade general, threaten a nerve gas attack from Alcatraz against San Francisco.

Director: Michael Bay | Stars: Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, John Spencer

Votes: 358,253 | Gross: $134.07M

It’s my brother’s favorite film and he’s three years older and I spent my youth having it quoted to me. “Carla was the prom queen.” And I was in San Francisco a couple weeks ago and got to witness Alcatraz from a distance so that was exciting.

11. Man on Wire (2008)

PG-13 | 94 min | Documentary, Biography, Crime

89 Metascore

A look at tightrope walker Philippe Petit's daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York City's World Trade Center's twin towers in 1974, what some consider, "the artistic crime of the century".

Director: James Marsh | Stars: Philippe Petit, Jean François Heckel, Jean-Louis Blondeau, Annie Allix

Votes: 58,684 | Gross: $2.96M

Bonus pick!

It’s going to sound sycophantic because he (James Marsh) is the director of this film (The Theory of Everything). Astounding – it subverted everything I thought it was going to be about.
