1. The Purge (I) (2013)

R | 85 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

41 Metascore

A wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal.

Director: James DeMonaco | Stars: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane

Votes: 240,184 | Gross: $64.47M

2. Philomena (2013)

PG-13 | 98 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

77 Metascore

A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.

Director: Stephen Frears | Stars: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Mare Winningham

Votes: 103,822 | Gross: $37.71M

A surprisingly hilarious yet entertaining dramedy about a woman searching for her son who was adopted. Judi Dench shines as does Alan Partridge (I meant Steve Coogan) with their conversations and expeditions to Ireland and the U.S.

3. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

R | 134 min | Biography, Drama, History

96 Metascore

In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

Director: Steve McQueen | Stars: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Kenneth Williams, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt

Votes: 741,671 | Gross: $56.67M

Tough-as-nails, violent, and drawn-back experience showcasing the horrors of slavery. While prone to get very fiery in its political perspective, the film does have strong performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender. This is Roots for the new generation.

4. Last Vegas (2013)

PG-13 | 105 min | Comedy

48 Metascore

Billy, Paddy, Archie and Sam have been best friends since childhood. When Billy proposes to his much-younger girlfriend, they go to Vegas to relive their glory days. However, the decades have changed Sin City and tested their friendship.

Director: Jon Turteltaub | Stars: Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline

Votes: 136,901 | Gross: $63.91M

A funnier version than The Hangover...but with actors over 55 years old. The joie-de-vivre and tone is light-hearted but nothing really in it that disappointed me. The jokes put some 15-cert. comedies to shame even if a 12A/12-cert.

5. Don Jon (2013)

R | 90 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

66 Metascore

A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.

Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt | Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza

Votes: 247,122 | Gross: $24.48M

An insightful and hilarious comedy that is more of a comical critique on male sexuality in their 20s than just another boring rom-com. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's debut film is lively, crude, and has plenty of ideas up its belt.

6. Monsters University (2013)

G | 104 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

65 Metascore

A look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.

Director: Dan Scanlon | Stars: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren

Votes: 390,330 | Gross: $268.49M

Pixar's finest film since Toy Story 3 and The Incredibles. A college comedy for the ages that everyone in the family can enjoy. A very well-written script, funny dialogues, realistic emotions for an animated film, and the sounds of screaming from the monsters that could easily startle a 5-year-old.

7. The Internship (2013)

PG-13 | 119 min | Comedy

42 Metascore

Two salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age find their way into a coveted internship at Google, where they must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment.

Director: Shawn Levy | Stars: Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Rose Byrne, Aasif Mandvi

Votes: 215,194 | Gross: $44.67M

8. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

PG | 114 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

54 Metascore

When both he and a colleague are about to lose their job, Walter takes action by embarking on an adventure more extraordinary than anything he ever imagined.

Director: Ben Stiller | Stars: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Jon Daly, Kathryn Hahn

Votes: 341,167 | Gross: $58.24M

A mild-mannered, take a trip type of film that doesn't ask for a lot but it's nice to watch. A loner at best exploring across the Northern oceans of Earth and a not-really-marketed-at-children PG-cert. all intrigues me here.

9. The World's End (2013)

R | 109 min | Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi

81 Metascore

Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from twenty years earlier unwittingly become humanity's only hope for survival.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike

Votes: 298,326 | Gross: $26.00M

10. This Is the End (2013)

R | 107 min | Comedy, Fantasy

67 Metascore

Six Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves.

Directors: Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen | Stars: James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel

Votes: 435,144 | Gross: $101.47M

11. The Butler (I) (2013)

PG-13 | 132 min | Biography, Drama

65 Metascore

As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man's life, family, and American society.

Director: Lee Daniels | Stars: Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda

Votes: 119,768 | Gross: $116.63M

Less tough to bite than 12 Years a Slave, The Butler has an Oscar-worthy performance from Forest Whitaker. The fictionalised account within the framework of American history is not only intriguing but at times funny and depressing all at the same time.

12. The Iceman (2012)

R | 106 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

60 Metascore

The story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When he was finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor his daughters had any clue about his real profession.

Director: Ariel Vromen | Stars: Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, James Franco, Winona Ryder

Votes: 79,461 | Gross: $1.94M

Violent and disturbing crime drama about Richard Kuklinski has an excellent performance from Michael Shannon. While not all too accurate from the real-life criminal, it makes up for it with intriguing juxtaposition of his family life and contract killings.

13. No (I) (2012)

R | 118 min | Drama, History

81 Metascore

An advertising executive comes up with a campaign to defeat Augusto Pinochet in Chile's 1988 referendum.

Director: Pablo Larraín | Stars: Gael García Bernal, Alfredo Castro, Antonia Zegers, Luis Gnecco

Votes: 26,224 | Gross: $2.34M

A visually stunning docudrama that takes into perspective the 'No' vote against Augusto Pinochet's regime. While it has a political motivation (given it was produced by Participant Media), it makes up for it with insightful commentary about the workings of political campaigning and media all of which the more relevant since there was an election last year in America.

14. Elysium (I) (2013)

R | 109 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

61 Metascore

In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

Director: Neill Blomkamp | Stars: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga

Votes: 471,264 | Gross: $93.05M

15. All Is Lost (2013)

PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

87 Metascore

After a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.

Director: J.C. Chandor | Star: Robert Redford

Votes: 83,843 | Gross: $6.26M

A taxing yet intense and well-performed adventure drama where the great Robert Redford is stuck in the Indian Ocean with nothing but to fend for himself and his boating gear.

16. Pain & Gain (2013)

R | 129 min | Action, Biography, Comedy

45 Metascore

A trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.

Director: Michael Bay | Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie, Tony Shalhoub

Votes: 229,404 | Gross: $49.88M

As confessed, Michael Bay's foray into dark crime comedy wasn't that bad as everyone made it out to be. An excellently filmed opening sequence, rude, anti-social demeanour, and Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise made up for the bad press. More reminiscent to Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino than Mr. Bay really.

17. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

R | 180 min | Biography, Comedy, Crime

75 Metascore

Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey

Votes: 1,584,947 | Gross: $116.90M

A baffling and overlong crime comedy that would've been more easy to digest if 2 hours or less than 3 hours. An entertaining and hilarious opening but nothing more than just an over-the-top, drawn-out comment on vice and avarice.

18. Fruitvale Station (2013)

R | 85 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

85 Metascore

The story of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008.

Director: Ryan Coogler | Stars: Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Durand

Votes: 85,927 | Gross: $16.10M

Very much by-the-numbers but a cold yet well-performed account into the last hours of Oscar Grant.

19. Everybody Has a Plan (2012)

R | 118 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

49 Metascore

A man who assumes the identity of his deceased twin in Argentina.

Director: Ana Piterbarg | Stars: Viggo Mortensen, Soledad Villamil, Daniel Fanego, Javier Godino

Votes: 2,159

Like a woodsy History of Violence but with a definitive ending. Nothing to marvel at but a taut and nicely done thriller about a man escaping it from it all. The scenery and grim setting is neat and fitting to Mortensen's persona.

20. Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy? (2013)

Not Rated | 88 min | Documentary, Animation, Biography

76 Metascore

A series of interviews featuring linguist, philosopher and activist Noam Chomsky done in hand-drawn animation.

Director: Michel Gondry | Stars: Noam Chomsky, Michel Gondry, Richard Feynman, Michèle Oshima

Votes: 3,682 | Gross: $0.13M

21. The Fifth Estate (2013)

R | 128 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

49 Metascore

A dramatic thriller based on real events that reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century's most fiercely debated organization.

Director: Bill Condon | Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Carice van Houten, Alicia Vikander

Votes: 42,720 | Gross: $3.25M
