1. The Lego Movie (2014)
PG | 100 min | Animation, Action, Adventure
An ordinary LEGO construction worker, thought to be the prophesied as "special", is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the LEGO universe into eternal stasis.
Directors: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller | Stars: Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett
Votes: 388,593 | Gross: $257.76M
Visually stunning and action-packed animated comedy will not disappoint. The animation, while CG for most part, looks deceptively like stop-motion and has some of the finest animation since Coraline, Rango, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
2. The Boxtrolls (2014)
PG | 96 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
A young orphaned boy raised by underground cave-dwelling trash collectors tries to save his friends from an evil exterminator.
Directors: Graham Annable, Anthony Stacchi | Stars: Ben Kingsley, Jared Harris, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade
Votes: 61,555 | Gross: $50.84M
A visual feast rivaling that of LEGO Movie with its hands-on stop-motion animation. It was better than Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit in terms of its quirks and love for cheese but not as good or as sinister as LAIKA Animation's other films.
3. Snowpiercer (2013)
R | 126 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi
In a future where a failed climate change experiment has killed all life except for the survivors who boarded the Snowpiercer (a train that travels around the globe), a new class system emerges.
Director: Bong Joon Ho | Stars: Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris
Votes: 389,262 | Gross: $4.56M
The most intriguing action film of the year. Entertaining setting, good action scenes, and a surprisingly dark sense of humour. They need to release this over in the UK sometime soon.
4. The Raid 2 (2014)
R | 150 min | Action, Crime, Thriller
Only a short time after the first raid, Rama goes undercover with the thugs of Jakarta and plans to bring down the syndicate and uncover the corruption within his police force.
Director: Gareth Evans | Stars: Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, Arifin Putra, Oka Antara
Votes: 131,338 | Gross: $2.63M
The most violent and energetic action film you'll see since...ever. This over-the-top yet enthralling work ups the ante on the martial arts movements, brutality, and even screenwriting to 90 degrees from the original. An 18-cert. film with dignity written on its sleeve.
5. The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
R | 103 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
Three groups of people intertwine and are left stranded in the streets on Purge Night, trying to survive the chaos and violence that occurs.
Director: James DeMonaco | Stars: Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez
Votes: 162,369 | Gross: $71.96M
For haters of the first, this will shut them up. Personally, I thought the second film could've benefited from a darker-edged ending and the addition of missing scenes from the trailer. Still, the action, L.A. setting, characters, and violence are amplified 115 degrees north. The themes are its main selling point- what would you do if all crime was legal between 19:00 (7pm) to 07:00 (7am) on a March night?
6. Million Dollar Arm (2014)
PG | 124 min | Biography, Drama, Family
A sports agent stages an unconventional recruitment strategy to get talented Indian cricket players to play Major League Baseball.
Director: Craig Gillespie | Stars: Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Alan Arkin, Suraj Sharma
Votes: 47,860 | Gross: $36.45M
A nice and unexpectedly funny comedy-drama about bringing Indian cricket players to play American baseball is a feast for the eyes. Good performances all-round including from Jon Hamm or Mr. Draper.
7. The Congress (2013)
Not Rated | 122 min | Animation, Drama, Sci-Fi
An aging, out-of-work actress accepts one last job, though the consequences of her decision affect her in ways she didn't consider.
Director: Ari Folman | Stars: Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel, Jon Hamm, Kodi Smit-McPhee
Votes: 19,918 | Gross: $0.14M
Think Roger Rabbit meets The Matrix. A very daring and imaginative journey that fulfills your mind with excellent animation and surrealism and critical jabs at Hollywood. The story, on the other hand, is not one to cheer for too much.
*A note for parents, the film, while half-animated, is intended more for teenagers and adults than infants and small kids due to a sex scene, mature themes, and coarse language.
8. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014)
PG | 98 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family
Larry spans the globe, uniting favorite and new characters while embarking on an epic quest to save the magic before it's gone forever.

Director: David Michôd | Stars: Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy, David Field
Votes: 51,210 | Gross: $1.11M
A slow-burning piece of existential drivel from David Michod starring Guy Pearce. It could've benefited from more explanation of its premise and a faster, better pace but what are you going to do?
11. Nightcrawler (2014)
R | 117 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
When Louis Bloom, a con man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
Director: Dan Gilroy | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton, Riz Ahmed
Votes: 605,058 | Gross: $32.38M
A very self-aware, ambiguous, and critical take on sensationalist news media and young man's ambition in finding a get-rich-quick scheme (which either mocks or promotes what he is trying to do). Fine performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and a better Oscar contender than Gone Girl and Foxcatcher.
12. Frank (II) (2014)
R | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Music
Jon, a young wanna-be musician, discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank.
Director: Lenny Abrahamson | Stars: Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Moira Brooker
Votes: 82,391 | Gross: $0.64M
Quirky yet a bit flawed music comedy/satire that makes use of Michael Fassbender with a neo-Frank Sidebottom mask. Better viewed as an experience or a fan of films like Spinal Tap and Blues Brothers than anything.
13. The Wind Rises (2013)
PG-13 | 126 min | Animation, Biography, Drama
Jiro Horikoshi studies assiduously to fulfill his aim of becoming an aeronautical engineer. As WWII begins, fighter aircraft designed by him end up getting used by the Japanese Empire against its foes.
Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Hideaki Anno, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Miori Takimoto, Masahiko Nishimura
Votes: 98,922 | Gross: $5.21M
A visual delight and a reminder that anime is not just all about robots and fanservice. Intriguing premise about an aviation engineer and a flawed man is so emotional that it even puts some live-action films to shame. The finest film Studio Ghibli has done since Howl's Moving Castle back in 2005.
14. Land Ho! (2014)
R | 95 min | Adventure, Comedy
A pair of former brothers-in-law embark on a road trip through Iceland.
Directors: Aaron Katz, Martha Stephens | Stars: Earl Lynn Nelson, Paul Eenhoorn, Daníel Gylfason, Þrúður Kristjánsdóttir
Votes: 2,685 | Gross: $0.73M
A loose yet entertaining and relaxing travelogue set in Iceland featuring two geriatric actors who make use of the running time with some very entertaining almost ad-lib conversations and gazes into the scenery of the country.
15. Chef (2014)
R | 114 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama
A head chef quits his restaurant job and buys a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.
Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman
Votes: 231,934 | Gross: $31.42M
A funny and mild-mannered comedy that showcases a softer, more realistic side of Jon Favreau. The finest cooking film since Ratatouille and kind of a satirical jab on culinary industry too.
16. The Guest (I) (2014)
R | 100 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller
A soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence.
Director: Adam Wingard | Stars: Dan Stevens, Sheila Kelley, Maika Monroe, Joel David Moore
Votes: 107,011 | Gross: $0.32M
A deceptively by-the-numbers action-thriller that plays out a lot like Cape Fear, Drive, and even Killer Joe with Dan Stevens pulling off the face and mannerisms of Ryan Gosling and Matthew McConaughey. It is more for hipsters than average moviegoers due to its intriguing 80s synth score and infrequent irony.
17. Locke (2013)
R | 85 min | Drama
Ivan Locke, a dedicated family man and successful construction manager, receives a phone call on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career that sets in motion a series of events that threaten his carefully cultivated existence.
Director: Steven Knight | Stars: Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott
Votes: 159,662 | Gross: $1.36M
An intriguing set-up for what is a taxing 82-minute ride into a BMW X5 as Tom Hardy's character shown dealing with a personal, familial, and work conflict on his hands. Powerful acting and beautiful shots make for a convincing but boring watch...and well-done product placement too.
18. Kill the Messenger (2014)
R | 112 min | Biography, Crime, Drama
Journalist Gary Webb, California 1996, started investigating CIA's role in the 1980s in getting crack cocaine to the black part of LA to get money and weapons to the Contra insurgents in Nicaragua.
Director: Michael Cuesta | Stars: Jeremy Renner, Robert Patrick, Jena Sims, Robert Pralgo
Votes: 48,774 | Gross: $2.45M
19. Gone Girl (2014)
R | 149 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller
With his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.
Director: David Fincher | Stars: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry
Votes: 1,068,352 | Gross: $167.77M
Intriguing and mysterious thriller that is more a comment and critique on marriage, sex lives, the media, and the legal system than just a plain old woman-gone-missing mystery. However, it's fair to say it feels more like a TV drama (e.g. Lifetime) than a film to watch on the big screen. Very happy to know it was one of the few 18-cert. films to make big money and get buzz this year.
20. The Inbetweeners 2 (2014)
Not Rated | 96 min | Comedy
Jay, Neil, Simon, and Will reunite in Australia for a holiday.
Directors: Damon Beesley, Iain Morris | Stars: Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas
Votes: 46,524
Hilarious and over-the-top sequel to what was a weak and unfunny first film adaptation of the TV series. The sequel takes it to Australia making it all the more different from the original's Kevin & Perry Go Large-wannabe mentality.
21. Whiplash (2014)

A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.

Votes: 990,892 | Gross: $13.09M

Votes: 125
A very entertaining and involving anthology of short films detailing about the workings of the U.S. economy in the eyes of comedians, filmmakers, animation, and even art installations. My favourite ones are Taxation Nation and Debt v. Deficit.
23. Life Itself (2014)
R | 121 min | Documentary, Biography
The life and career of the renowned film critic and social commentator, Roger Ebert.
Director: Steve James | Stars: Roger Ebert, Chaz Ebert, Gene Siskel, Martin Scorsese

A documentary that explores the world of U.S. television showrunners and the creative forces aligned around them.
Director: Des Doyle | Stars: J.J. Abrams, Kristen Bell, David Boreanaz, Matthew Carnahan
Votes: 1,259 | Gross: $0.00M
26. Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy? (2013)
Not Rated | 88 min | Documentary, Animation, Biography
A series of interviews featuring linguist, philosopher and activist Noam Chomsky done in hand-drawn animation.
Director: Michel Gondry | Stars: Noam Chomsky, Michel Gondry, Richard Feynman, Michèle Oshima
Votes: 3,682 | Gross: $0.13M
An enriching and extremely vivid animate documentary that looks into the theories and ideas of Noam Chomsky, a controversial anarchist, linguist, and political activist. Michel Gondry has upped his game with a self-regimented animation structure even if the visuals and dialogue can distract sometimes.
