Throughout the years of his work, Stephen King has surely got enough acclaim from his readers and the world’s critics, but not that much of recognition from the cinema’s biggest awards institution.
There’s a whole collection of movies and shows that were successfully adapted from Stephen King’s most famous novels, but only one of the films, Misery, starring Kathy Bates, made it to winning an Oscar for Best Actress back in 1991.
Though the Academy is somewhat discreet when it comes to celebrating horror flicks, King still resents Hollywood’s essential award for not giving a chance to his novel’s adaptation that he himself considers one of the best.
Back in 2007, King’s 1999 short story titled 1408 was transformed into a psychological thriller of the same name. Starring John Cusack, the movie follows Mike Enslin who got everyone’s acclaim for his firm disbelief in the supernatural,...

Does the Academy hate horror? "Hate" is probably a strong word, but it's not unfair to say the Academy has at least an aversion to the genre. With the notable exception of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs," which swept the Oscars and won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay, the Oscars tend to overlook or ignore horror movies altogether. For (recent) example: many people thought Toni Collette should've at least nabbed a nomination for her incredible work in Ari Aster's "Hereditary," but that didn't happen.
Stephen King knows a thing or two about horror movies, especially since most of his books have been adapted to the screen. When it comes to King's movie adaptations, only one has achieved Oscar glory: "Misery," which earned Kathy Bates a Best Actress Oscar. But if King had his way, another one of his movies would've been recognized by the Academy,...

Whether it’s due to Nicholas Cage’s acclaimed performance or not, the actor’s mediocre thriller The Frozen Ground has suddenly made its way to Netflix’s global top more than ten years after its theatrical release.
Currently holding the number 7 position to-date, the movie has been going strong after it initially entered the chart with the same place last week, according to FlixPatrol.
Packed with this-day big Hollywood stars like Vanessa Hudgens, John Cusack and, ironically, 50 Cent, The Frozen Ground follows Alaska Trooper Jack Halcombe, portrayed by Cage, embarking on a hunt for local serial killer Robert Hansen who is believed to have been torturing and sexually assaulting young girls for 13 years.
To get more evidence for Hansen’s arrest, Halcombe dives deep into the whole story and finds out that one victim, Cindy Paulsen, somehow managed to survive, though since then she’s turned into an...

While it may feel like The Hunger Games franchise just arrived on Netflix, it will be leaving the streamer at the end of the month. The story of Katniss Everdeen starting a true revolution in the dystopian world and leading it to victory has captivated young adult viewers for more than 10 years now, but it will soon have to find another home.
On May 31, all of the films in The Hunger Games franchise will be removed from Netflix. But that fate awaits more movies than that. Here are 8 other movies you might want to watch before the end of the month, before they're gone from your subscription.

Nicolas Cage is the cinema’s giant, famous mostly for his mainstream action movies, like The Rock (1996), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) and, of course, the Ghost Rider film series (2007–2011). Nevertheless, he’s also much of a thriller actor, capable of putting more suspense and mystery with his impeccable performances.
It’s proved by the film, which is now surprisingly holding the seventh place in Netflix’s global chart, even though it was released in 2011 and since that has been seemingly forgotten. It’s definitely a must-watch for the crime procedurals’ enjoyers.
The movie’s plot revolves around an Alaskan policeman, portrayed by Cage, who is having much trouble solving the biggest case of his whole career, the one of a serial killer (John Cusack), kidnapping and performing sexual assault on the young women.
He’s accompanied by a reckless prostitute (Vanessa Hudgens), appearing to be the maniac’s victim who managed to avoid death.

Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.
Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Hughes wrote a script that truly reflected the life of an average teen,...

Sometimes Asian filmmakers employ Western actors to attract more public attention to their works. We can recall here such Chinese movies as Christian Bale’s The Flowers of War (2011), Adrien Brody and John Cusack’s Dragon Blade (2015), both of them being historical dramas, and, besides, Kevin Spacey’s comedy thriller Inseparable (2011).
The same happened with the Jason Bourne actor, Matt Damon and Game of Thrones’ Pedro Pascal, who were invited to star in the Chinese monster movie, which turned out to be controversial enough to spark debate about the reasonability of such a cast.
The plot of this kaiju focuses on two European mercenary warriors (played by Damon and Pascal), who become imprisoned within the Great Wall of China by imperial forces, forcing them to join the army fighting against the unstoppable alien creatures.

Refresh for updates… Tributes are pouring in for Joe Flaherty, whose career launched with Canadian sketch comedy series Sctv, and who was known for his roles as Harold Weir on Freaks and Geeks, and Donald the heckler in Happy Gilmore. Flaherty died Monday at the age of 82.
Martin Short, Flaherty’s co-star on Sctv, remembered Flaherty as “the funniest man in the room.”
“In over 50 years of our friendship, there were very few people as wise or hilarious when it came to comedy, teaching improvisation and the art of character work as Joe,” Short wrote in a press statement. “In ‘Sctv’ we called him the anchor. In life, he was simply the funniest man in the room. I just adored him.”
Adam Sandler paid tribute to his Happy Gilmore co-star in a post on Instagram.
“Oh man. Worshipped Joe growing up, Sandler wrote next to photo of Flaherty. “Always had me and my brother laughing.

After Lucille Ball's spunky housewife Lucy signed off on the last episode of "I Love Lucy" but before Mary Tyler Moore did away with the nuclear family sitcom model with her own self-titled show, another actress was one of the faces of womanhood in comedy. Oscar-winning actress Donna Reed headlined "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1966, playing middle-class mother and housewife Donna Stone in the popular black-and-white series. Reed starred opposite Carl Betz, who played Donna's husband, pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone. In season 5, family friends Midge and Dave joined the fun, but for the most part, the show was all about the lighthearted hijinks of the Stone family.
Though "The Donna Reed Show" was popular upon release, it's now perhaps most often referenced as a pop cultural window into a time before second-wave feminism, when women were expected to spend their time cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing while men went to work.

Deadline reports a new sports documentary is being planned for kickboxing champion and martial arts movie star Benny “The Jet” Urquidez. The names associated with the production almost seems like a bingo announcer called out randomly drawn names from my favorite childhood movies. Keanu Reeves, who himself is no stranger to the martial arts world and action genre, has partnered with Fisher Stevens, who is known for projects like Short Circuit 1 & 2 and Hackers, to produce the documentary on Urquidez, whom I’ve talked about before on my Dragons Forever retrospective.
The documentary, which is titled The Jet, is currently in production with the Emmy-nominated sports documentary editor turned filmmaker, Jennifer Tiexiera, directing the film. Tiexiera has most recently also directed a three-part series for HBO called Unveiled: Surviving La Luz del Mundo, which has also recently been nominated for an Emmy in the catagory of Outstanding Crime and Justice Documentary.

Zac Efron once had a much-talked about love scene with on-screen partner Nicole Kidman in The Paperboy. Efron’s ex-partner, Michelle Rodriguez, was one of many who saw the feature. And she was as candid as usual about her thoughts.

Forget Batman, forget the X-Men. The greatest rogues gallery in comics history belongs to Spider-Man. So great are his baddies that Sony continues to spend millions of dollars to launch a cinematic universe around them. And while Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Venom continue to get most of the attention, even B-level guys like the Spot have been elevated to big bads.
But let’s be honest, even Spider-Man comics have a few duds when it comes to bad guys. Even if we took out the horrendous mess that was the Clone Saga (and we aren’t going to take it out), Spider-Man would still have too many losers and redundant villains to count. So, here are the absolute worst of the worst in Spider-Man’s villain roster, characters so dull that they aren’t good for much besides getting killed in a crossover event.

Before Jack Black took the pop culture world by storm with a breakout role in 2000's "High Fidelity," the actor, musician, and comedian had his doubts about the movie. In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Black reflects back on his decades-long career and admits that he initially passed on the role of music junkie Barry over fears that it might negatively impact his own real-life music career.
"My friend, John Cusack, was like, 'You would be perfect for this role, Barry, in 'High Fidelity,'" Black recalled (Cusack starred in and co-wrote the movie). "I was hesitant because I was like, I don't know if I want to make a movie about rock and roll, and someone who is a critic of rock and roll." Though "High Fidelity" is a music-lovers' classic now, the film based on a Nick Hornby book features some painfully authentic music snobbery,...

Mira Sorvino confirms that she and Lisa Kudrow are finalising contracts for Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2. More here.
It was all the way back in 1997 that out of the blue, Hollywood gave us a pair of impressive high school reunion movies. First up, in the UK at least, was Grosse Pointe Blank, starring John Cusack. That had the better reviews and initial response at the time. Yet since then, it’s Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion that’s come far more to the fore.
Starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, and directed by David Mirkin, the original film – as discussed in an old Film Stories podcast episode here – was penned by Robin Schiff. She based it on a 1988 stage production called Ladies Room, and it was revealed a little while back that she was cooking up a Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2.

"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.
The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.
But not every actor featured in the 1989 romance movie survived into 2024. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Diane's hypercritical (and hypocritical) father, James Court, passed away back in 2018. The late actor was the oldest major cast member by quite a few years and was in his late 70s when he passed. Pro-Palestinian supporters will march through the center of the Sundance Film Festival this weekend.
While details have not been widely publicized, organizers behind the “Let Gaza Live” protest have asked participants to gather for a demonstration on Sunday regarding the Israel-Hamas war on Main Street in Park City, Utah.
Protesters will arrive via bus and march between 12 p.m.-1 p.m., according to three sources. The event is not affiliated with Sundance, which has taken over the luxury hamlet of Park City for the past 40 years. The protest comes amidst the presence of families of hostages held by Hamas attending events and being hosted in and around the festival.
“Park City is home to the largest indie film fest in the U.S.; tens of thousands travel across the globe to attend the event. While we do not take issue with Sundance as a whole, we aim to let...

‘Stranger Things’ star Noah Schnapp has spoken out about the social media backlash over his viral “zionism is sexy” video. In a new video shared on TikTok, the actor said that his views on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas “have been so far misconstrued”, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I feel like my thoughts and beliefs have been so far misconstrued from anything even close to what I believe, and I wanted to just state from my heart how I feel,” the actor said in the Monday, January 15 video.
“I only want peace and safety and security for all innocent people affected by this conflict.”
He added that he’s “had many open discussions with friends from Palestinian background,” adding, “I think those are very important conversations to have and I’ve learned a lot.”

As the Israel-Hamas crisis enters its third month, Hollywood, with its sizable Jewish population and increasing divides among liberals as well as progressives over justice issues, has emerged as a proxy informational battle-space in the conflict. There is a nervousness among industry insiders connected to the Golden Globes that activists may take advantage of the global reach of the kick-off major awards season event — the first to be televised since Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre — for their own ends.
The Beverly Hills Police Department tells The Hollywood Reporter that it’s working in tandem with neighboring law enforcement agencies as well as the FBI to prepare for protests. “At this time, we are not aware of any threats to the events or its attendees; however, we are aware of world events,” says lieutenant Renato Moreno. “As a result, we have staffed extra police personnel.”

Back in 1996, the Twister cast, outside of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was largely unknown. At the time, not too many of them were famous. However, in the years since the film, much of that has changed and much of the Twister cast has gone on to fame both in front and behind the camera.
Helen Hunt was arguably the film’s biggest star in the cast back in ’96, but she wasn’t the first choice for the movie. Before the role of Dr. Jo Harding went to her, Jurassic Park standout Laura Dern, Bridget Fonda, and Kate Mulgrew almost wore the good doctor’s white tank top and reinforced mud-stompers. Initially, Tom Hanks eyed the role of Bill Harding but ultimately felt Twister wasn’t the right fit for his brand of character creation. Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

December is here, and for many, that means watching Serendipity, the 2001 romantic comedy starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. While the movie premiered more than two decades ago — yes, really — Beckinsale, who played destiny-obsessed Sara, has experienced serendipity in her own life. She once had a “very on-brand” Serendipity type of interaction in a hotel bathroom. Ahead, how she “fell apart” upon hearing about a fan of the movie. Plus, how Jennifer Aniston almost played Sara and where to watch Serendipity.
Kate Beckinsale had a ‘serendipitous’ experience meeting Kenickie’s real-life girlfriend
Like her Serendipity character, Beckinsale has found herself in a “serendipitous” situation from time to time. One particularly memorable moment happened in a hotel bathroom with the girlfriend of the late Grease star Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie.
“From a very young age, I was really obsessed with Grease, like everybody was,” Beckinsale, 50, told Vulture in 2020. “I learned all the dances,...

Melissa Barrera has been dropped from the upcoming Scream VII due to her outspoken social media support of Palestine amidst the Israel-Hamas war.
According to Variety, Deadline, and others, Barrera was booted by the production company behind the Scream franchise, Spyglass Media, with sources citing her recent Instagram posts and Stories voicing anti-Zionist, pro-Palestinian messages as the reason why. Since the conflict broke out last month, the actor has consistently been sharing media depicting inhumane actions of the American and Israeli governments, condemning the oppression of the Palestinian people, and calling for a ceasefire.
Among the (many) posts and Stories Barrera has shared include descriptions of Israel as a settler-colonial, apartheid state guilty of ethnic cleansing. "Frasier" had a bevy of guest stars throughout its original eleven-season run, but you might not recognize some of them on first watch. That's because many of the most famous actors to appear on the beloved sitcom did so in voice only, calling into psychologist Frasier Crane's (Kelsey Grammer) Seattle radio show for all manner of life advice. Casting a celebrity who viewers never actually see felt like a new gimmick when the series first premiered, and it's frankly still a rarity now.
In an oral history of the series published by Vanity Fair in 2018, series co-creators Peter Casey and David Lee, casting director Jeff Greenberg, and director Jimmy Burrows talked about how the call-in guest stars idea originated, who showed up on the other end of the line, and which celebrities turned "Frasier" down. "Early on, someone suggested getting guest voices," Casey recalled. "Kelsey agreed, as long as they weren't goofy calls.

Noah Schnapp was blasted as “disgusting” on social media on Monday after sharing a video in which he and his friends are laughing and holding up stickers that say “Zionism is sexy.”
The backlash against the “Stranger Things” star comes amid the escalation of Israel’s war on Gaza in retaliation for the deadly Hamas attack on Oct. 7. The reaction to the Instagram Stories clip, which has been widely shared on Twitter, had some calling for a boycott of the hit Netflix series’ upcoming final season.

Edgar Allan Poe may have enjoyed some amount of popularity during his lifetime, but he certainly could not have predicted just how influential his writing would become in the ensuing years. Even over two centuries later, we’re still seeing reverential homages to his work in modern media, and that’s not even including the immeasurable impact the author had on the horror genre as a whole.
And with Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher reinventing the author’s stories for the streaming generation, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best Poe adaptations to watch after binging Netflix’s horrific treat. After all, there’s something for everyone when it comes to reinventions of Edgar’s tales of mystery and imagination.
And with hundreds of adaptations to choose from, we won’t be limiting ourselves to either film or...

Exclusive: Yale Productions appoints Michael Day its new Head of Production—as announced today by Yale Entertainment’s Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman.
Previously, Day collaborated with Yale Productions as a producer on a string of successful projects, including Rare Objects, As They Made Us, and The Kill Room. Continuing this partnership, he notably produced and directed the dark comedy/thriller Clawfoot, which stars Francesca Eastwood, Milo Gibson, and Olivia Culpo. It notably made its premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival this year.
He has hit the ground running as Head of Production. Under Day’s purview, Yale just finished production on its much-anticipated sexual thriller The Bird And The Bee, co-starring Alicia Silverstone and Karl Glusman and directed by Justin Kelly. There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”
Night of the Living Dead (1968) Continental Distributing
George Romero’s low-budget chiller, in which the dead come back to life and prey on the living, still packs a wallop more than 50 years later. Ben (Duane Jones) takes charge as shellshocked people shelter inside an isolated farmhouse…...

Netflix’s “Nyad” tells the remarkable true story of swimmer Diana Nyad and her quest to swim from Cuba to Florida while in her sixties. Annette Bening stars in the titular role while Jodie Foster turns in a key supporting performance as Nyad’s coach, Bonnie Stoll. “Nyad,” which is out in US theaters on Oct. 20 before heading to Netflix on November 2, could well earn Bening a fifth Oscar nomination for her title role as the impressive swimmer. But, before that, let’s take a look back at Bening’s four Oscar races to date.
Bening first found herself on the academy’s radar in 1991 for her role in “The Grifters,” Stephen Frears‘ crime thriller about a conman (John Cusack) who finds himself torn between his mother (Anjelica Huston) and girlfriend (Bening), both of whom are con-artists themselves. Bening had something of a rocky road on the way to the...
