Amazon has announced (via GameFragger.com) that Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Tomb Raider TV series is officially moving forward at Prime Video. The project has been handed a series order, with Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke breaking the news at the company's Upfront event in New York today.

Minnie Driver claims producers for 1998’s Hard Rain told her she couldn’t wear a wetsuit because “they wanted to see my nipples.”
The Good Will Hunting actress said on Mondays’ episode of the I Weigh With Jameela Jamil podcast that she was made to feel like “an idiot” when she pushed back on a costume decision for the disaster action thriller, despite filming in “20 million gallons of water.”
“It’s set during this massive storm,” she explained. “There were huge rain machines. We shot crazy hours. It was tough…. Everybody else could wear a wetsuit underneath their costume, and I was told by the producers that I couldn’t because they wanted to see my nipples, and that there was no point in having the wet T-shirt if you couldn’t have what was underneath it.”

Actors and actresses often come across projects whose filming ends up making them quite uncomfortable and Minnie Driver is no exception. Back in 1998, the actress starred in Mikael Salomon’s heist action-thriller, Hard Rain. While the film didn’t perform well at the box office, bringing in less than $20 million, this was far from what soured Minnie Driver’s memories of the film.
A still from Hard Rain (1998)
According to Minnie Driver, she was made to go through some serious uncomfortable working situations. Apparently, she was not allowed to wear a wet suit underneath her clothes, unlike other actors, despite the fact that they were filming with rain machines. And when Minnie Driver decided to push back, she felt as if she was being punished for speaking up.

Jason Statham will be protecting his bees on the telly, as The Beekeeper’s Sky Cinema debut is now confirmed in the UK.
It’s been quite lovely to report on The Beekeeper this year in particular, the action thriller starring Jason Statham where The Stath, well, keeps bees. As we’ve written several times on this site already this year alone, it’s a really good movie, with The Statham back to the kind of in-camera action that he built his career up on.
Directed by David Ayer – who we spoke to for a podcast special here – there’s much to enjoy with The Beekeeper, and hopes are high for a sequel too. Its solid box office returns on a modest budget certainly help in that department.
In the UK, the film was released by Sky Cinema into UK cinemas in early January. Sky is giving its cinema released films a 45 day theatrical window.

Classic 1990s comedy chat show The Kumars is returning to television, here are the details.
In the 1990s, there were two shows which brought black British comedy into the mainstream. The first was The Real McCoy, a sketch show which launched the television careers of double acts Curtis Walker and Ishmael Thomas, and Llewella Gideon and Collette Johnson. Later series featured Robbie Gee, Eddie Nestor, Judith Jacob, Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Syal and the much missed Felix Dexter, amongst others.
The second series was sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, which premiered on the BBC in 1997. Taking an irreverent look at Asian-British experience, the series is probably best known for the now iconic ‘Going For An English’ sketch, which poked fun at the stereotypical British experience of going for a curry, but flipping races to an Indian family going out for bland English food.

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”
In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

It has been nothing shy of an abysmal start at the box office this year. The first chunk of 2024 has been left largely devoid of big new releases (in no small part thanks to the strikes last year) and, as a result, ticket sales are down significantly. But director David Ayer and professional ass-kicker Jason Statham have stepped up to do their part as "The Beekeeper" has become the year's first true breakout hit. To that end, the action flicked passed the $100 million mark over the weekend, becoming the first new release of the year to do so.
"The Beekeeper" ended up topping the charts over the weekend with a $7.4 million haul, per Box Office Mojo. That is more of a commentary on the state of things as there were no new releases to entice audiences. So, we're left with a movie in its third weekend taking the top spot with a sub-$10 million total.

"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.
The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.
But not every actor featured in the 1989 romance movie survived into 2024. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Diane's hypercritical (and hypocritical) father, James Court, passed away back in 2018. The late actor was the oldest major cast member by quite a few years and was in his late 70s when he passed. David Ayer thinks there are similarities between 'The Beekeeper' and classic action movies such as 'Die Hard'.The 55-year-old filmmaker has helmed the new action thriller that stars Jason Statham as Adam Clay, a man living a quiet life as a beekeeper who embarks on a deadly vengeance mission, and explained that the picture has the feel of iconic 1980s films from the genre.Asked how he got involved in the project, David told Collider: "I got this amazing script from Kurt Wimmer, and Kurt got Jason involved, and I've always been interested in working with Jason. I just saw so much potential and ability in him as an actor."And then here this script comes along, and it just felt like the movies I liked growing up, like '48 Hrs.', 'Beverly Hills Cop' or 'Die Hard'. David Ayer directed one of the most unexpectedly huge hits of the last decade with DC's "Suicide Squad" back in 2016. What happened after was an unfortunate mess that Ayer found himself caught in the middle of. Now though, the filmmaker finally gets to be on the right end of a theatrical success story as his latest film "The Beekeeper" has found life at the box office. With the help of Jason Statham and a ridiculous premise, Ayer now has his first theatrical hit since his divisive superhero blockbuster.
Even though it didn't top the charts (that honor belongs to the new "Mean Girls" musical), "The Beekeeper" opened to $16.5 million, with that total growing to $19 million when accounting for the Monday MLK holiday, per The Numbers. The film only made $4 million overseas thus far, bringing its total to $23 million, but it is still scheduled to open in many key markets in the coming weeks.

Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical earned a grool $33.2 million from 3,791 theaters over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, beating expectations.
Based on the Broadway adaptation of the 2004 comedy classic, “Mean Girls” was originally commissioned with plans to skip theaters and make a streaming debut directly on Paramount+, but executives opted for a theatrical release after test screenings. The musical film cost just $36 million.
The new “Mean Girls” stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, a role originated by Lindsay Lohan, who must navigate the social scene of her new high school ruled by the Plastics. Reneé Rapp reprises her Broadway role as queen bee Regina George, with a cast that also includes Bebe Wood, Avantika, Jaquel Spivey, Auli’i Cravalho and original stars Tim Meadows and producer-writer Tina Fey.
Paramount intentionally downplayed the song-and-dance numbers in promotional materials for the movie musical, which earned a “B” grade through research firm Cinema Score.

When it comes to action, I’ve always had an appreciation for Mr. Jason Statham. Even in a less-than-stellar flick, he’s always fun to watch. And thankfully, his latest brought the entertainment in a big way (our Eic loved it). The Beekeeper has terrific action and a lot of humor and it is skillfully directed by David Ayer with a script by Kurt Wimmer. If you are looking for an escape, this is the perfect movie to do it with. The impressive cast includes Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, Phylicia Rashad, Jemma Redgrave, and Minnie Driver.
Recently, I had a terrific time speaking with Mr. Ayer and Mr. Hutcherson. It was a thrill to talk to David as I’m an admirer of his work. He discussed taking on the project, and finding a little more of the funny this time around. As well, he spoke on the terrific work of Phylicia Rashad.

Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical is winning most popular at the domestic box office this weekend. The adaptation of the Broadway adaptation of the beloved 2004 comedy is off to a strong start, coming in ahead of the latest Jason Statham actioner “The Beekeeper.”
“Mean Girls” earned $11.65 million from 3,791 theaters across Friday and preview screenings, tracking to a four-day opening of $31.5 million through the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. That’s quite a substantial figure for a musical that was originally commissioned with plans to skip theaters and make a streaming debut directly on Paramount+. The studio changed its tune after test screenings.
From its first trailer, many viewers took notice that the marketing for the “Mean Girls” musical seemed to purposefully exclude song-and-dance numbers. Jason Statham knows a thing or two about action movies, having starred in more than a few of them throughout his career, and he even schooled The Beekeeper director David Ayer when it comes to the genre.
“He schooled me,” David Ayer told /Film. “I mean, let’s be real: He’s an action icon, and he’s probably forgotten more about action than I know. He really raised my game. He really helped me get under the hood of, what is action? How does it work? And he has this encyclopedic knowledge of, like, literally every punch ever thrown on film. So when you present him with choreography, [he’ll say], ‘No, I did that in this movie, I saw that in this, I saw that in that.’ And then his sense of self and how he presents on camera is impeccable, and you have to support that and then build around that.

David Ayer’s The Beekeeper buzzes into theaters today, and to celebrate the occasion, the Suicide Squad director shared a new poster for the action film starring Jason Statham online. If you have Melissophobia, I recommend you click away from this article now because the new poster features Statham’s clenched fist and forearm crawling with winged honey generators. FX has ordered its latest comedy pilot.
The network has ordered Snowflakes from former The Tonight Show writers Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw to be exec produced by Nick Kroll and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens showrunner Karey Dornetto.
It is the latest pilot for the Disney-owned network alongside Peep Show, the Minnie Driver and Amandla Jahava-fronted remake of the cult British classic, which is still in the works. It comes after English Teacher, a comedy starring and created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, was picked up to series in November after its pilot was ordered in 2022.
FX is coming off the Golden Globes success of its comedy The Bear, which is also a favorite for a number of Emmys on Monday.
Snowflakes is a twenty-something ensemble comedy following a group of codependent housemates trying to be good people, despite being neither “good” nor “people” yet.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM’s Head of Specialty Theatrical Distribution, Mark Boxer, was among the notables cuts yesterday at the streaming theatrical studio.
Among some of Boxer’s highlights at Amazon, he oversaw the specialty theatrical releases of such Oscar nominated titles as Being the Ricardos, Poland’s 2018 International film entry Cold War, and 2x Oscar winner Sound of Metal.
With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, Boxer was a key suit in getting Ben Affleck’s Air into theaters. He was also recently involved in the successful release strategies for awards season titles Saltburn, The Boys in the Boat and American Fiction.
During the pandemic, Boxer also handled the theatrical distribution of such big Prime Video acquisition titles, Coming 2 America, Cinderella, Hotel Transylvania 4, and The Tomorrow War to those cinemas and drive-ins that were lucky to be open.
Boxer also supervised the opening, and operated Amazon’s Culver Theater in Culver City,...

You can add The Beekeeper to the long list of action movies named for the jobs their protagonist took up after laying down their weapons and trying to live a peaceful life: The Gardener, The Painter, The Bricklayer… etc, etc. Actually Adam Clay always was a beekeeper, that was the name of the elite unit he was a part of before he retired to actually raise bees. He does this on a farm owned by Eloise Parker somewhere in a very confused part of England that wants us to believe it’s actually Western Massachusetts.
Eloise, who is supposed to be a retired teacher and should know better, falls for one of those computer scams that says you have a virus and to call this number to have it removed.
