Somewhere, at this very moment, someone's dad is probably watching one of the Jesse Stone movies on DVD, and that man is having a great afternoon. After this, he might pop in "Ford v. Ferrari" for the seventh time.
The character of Jesse Stone began his life in a series of airport novels written by the late Robert B. Parker. The first Jesse Stone novel, "Night Passage," was published in 1997 and it followed the titular former LAPD detective (and divorced recovering alcoholic) as he investigated money laundering and murder in Paradise, Massachusetts. Parker had a hit on his hands with "Night Passage," and proceeded to writer eight additional Jesse Stone novels from 1998 up until his death in 2010. Jesse Stone had become an institution at that point, and other authors began writing Stone novels in Parker's style. There have been 11 additional Jesse Stone novels written after Parker's death.

The 22 continuing series leads currently nominated for Primetime Emmys hail from 18 different programs each consisting of up to half a dozen seasons. When it comes to determining which four will triumph, a great deal of insight can be gained by examining past victories with regard to how long the winning performers had been playing their characters. Naturally, seven decades’ worth of results indicate significant consistency in terms of how long it takes series stars to win the favor of the TV academy.
Considering all four categories in which comedy and drama series leads compete, the largest subgroup of victors (28.7%) is made up of those who were honored for their first seasons. During the 2020s, this roster has grown to include Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), and Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) and could gain as many as four new members this year. Since 44.3% of all Best Drama Actor winners are included here,...

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.
For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, lead performances usually dominate the TV categories. But the tide has been turning over in the drama actress race, where in the past two years, the guild has rewarded two different featured players — Gillian Anderson (“The Crown”) and Jung Ho-yeon (“Squid Game”) — who both competed at other awards shows in supporting. If the trophy this year goes to another supporting performer, as it seems likely to do, those three consecutive victories will be a first in this category in the history of the ceremony.
That supporting performer is, of course, Jennifer Coolidge from “The White Lotus: Sicily,” who has a commanding lead in our current combined odds. She is out front of our No. 2, Zendaya (“Euphoria”), by almost 1,000 predictors, even though Zendaya just took home her second Best Drama Actress Emmy and competes at SAG for the very first time. When Gillian Anderson was honored by the Screen Actors Guild two years ago for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown,” the Netflix series became the first to ever produce three different solo SAG Award winners. Now, this trio – which includes Claire Foy (as Queen Elizabeth II) and John Lithgow (as Winston Churchill) – could grow into a quartet if Elizabeth Debicki is lauded for her fifth season performance as Princess Diana. This would also make “The Crown” the first show to produce three different recipients of the guild’s Best TV Drama Actress prize.
As a concurrent drama ensemble nominee, Debicki faces double challenges from Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”) and “Ozark” pair Julia Garner and Laura Linney. This marks Garner and Linney’s third drama actress face-off following their joint losses to Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) in 2019 and Anderson in 2021. As the star of “Inventing Anna,” Garner is...

Ruby Baker’s carefree days of staying out past curfew, carousing with her besties, and simply being a teenager are all over. The nightmare of The Glass House begins with the protagonist (Leelee Sobieski) learning her parents, David and Grace, have both died in a car accident. Ruby and her younger brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) are then quickly taken in by family friends and former neighbors Terry and Erin Glass, whose home is located in Malibu. Obviously a big life adjustment like this requires some time, but Ruby’s grief turns into suspicion. There’s something not right about her new guardians.
In this 2001 thriller, those first couple of scenes with the whole Baker clan are wholesome and inviting; David and Grace’s last moments with their children are warmly colored and glowing. But once they’re gone and the Baker children move into their foster home, the movie gradually becomes cold and severe.

Soon after its September 2021 premiere, the South Korean series “Squid Game” rose in popularity to the position of Netflix’s most-watched show ever. Subscribers consumed its nine episodes in record numbers, amounting to 1.65 billion viewing hours in the month following its debut. Now, the series has begun to prove its worth by becoming only the third recipient of Screen Actors Guild Award nominations in all four eligible categories, after “Breaking Bad” (2014) and “Stranger Things” (2018). Star Jung Ho-yeon’s individual recognition has made her the first Asian-born nominee in the history of the drama actress category, as well as the first woman to earn a solo TV bid for a fully non-English language role. “Squid Game” marks her first-ever acting role after a successful modeling career.

“It is a moment to allow people to just reflect on the story, and what has just happened” Rita Wilson reveals about the song “Because Love,” which the performer, songwriter and producer co-wrote with composer Laura Karpman for Eleanor Coppola‘s ensemble comedy/drama “Love is Love is Love.”
Wilson, who co-stars in the film, sings an excerpt from the song live and acapella in front of friends and family gathered to eulogize a dear friend who has died. The song in some ways serves as a circuit-breaker after revelations, laughs and tears. “When you’re at a gathering and somebody starts to sing,” Karpman agrees, “it focuses the energy in a really, really profound, funny, meaningful way and it brings everybody in the room closer,” she says. “It’s really a wonderful thing to do, and I think it’s a particularly wonderful thing to do in this period...

Sony Pictures Classics releases Telluride-darling documentary Julia with a national TV push, culinary events and virtual screenings through November hosted by famous chefs from Alice Waters (San Francisco) and Johnny Spero (Boston) to Jamie Bissonnette (Houston) and luminaries from New York, LA, Philly and Miami.
Directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen talked up the film on one Today show segment, followed by another, where food stylist Susan Spungen made Child’s recipe for pear and almond tarts. Chef Marcus Samuelsson – who appears in the film — cooked Julia Child’s classic roasted chicken and glazed carrots on Rachel Ray. A Nightline interview with West and Cohen airs next week.
Marketing and outreach is key in the current tepid specialty market.
“Every city is new event. It’s a real grassroots campaign,” said Sony Pictures Classic co-president Tom Bernard. That includes ads in food sections of newspapers, on cooking podcasts and YouTube.

Mature content means something different when it comes to Eleanor Coppola’s narrative features. “Love Is Love Is Love” — opening Friday theatrically — is the director’s second narrative film. And as with her 2017 debut, “Paris Can Wait,” Coppola writes and shoots what she knows: the lives of women of a certain age — but also of a rather rarefied status.
Coppola has gathered a fine ensemble of actors, many of whom likely share in her concerns about the paucity of big-screen stories for — and featuring — grown women. The three vignettes in this at times tender, occasionally amusing adventure in romance, marriage and friendship provide a number of textured moments for their female performers. Johanna Whalley nails marital knowingness in “Two for Dinner.” Kathy Baker proves to be the adult in the room — er, on deck — in “Sailing Lesson.” The dinner table in “Late Lunch” is ringed with welcome guests who underscore...

"You've change, you know?" "Thank you for noticing." Blue Fox Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Love Is Love Is Love, the latest film from filmmaker Eleanor Coppola (also director of Paris Can Wait), who also so happens to be Francis Ford Coppola's wife for many years. A woven tale of three stories that explore love, commitment, and loyalty between couples and friends. An anthology of stories about love, with various events that provide "surprising revelations." Throughout all three stories, Coppola uses a light touch and naturalistic ease to find the heart of the deepest friendships and romances. The ensemble cast features Joanna Whalley, Chris Messina, Kathy Baker, Marshall Bell, Maya Kazan, Cybill Shepherd, Rosanna Arquette, and Rita Wilson. This looks quite wholesome and life-affirming, just a charming series of stories about the ups and downs of life and love. It's worth a quick look.

History was made in a monumental way with the announcement of the 2021 Primetime Emmy nominations as Mj Rodriguez (“Pose”) became the first trans lead acting nominee. This year also marks the first instance of three Black women being included in the same Best Drama Actress lineup, as Rodriguez is up against Uzo Aduba (“In Treatment”) and Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”). Any of them would be only the third Black winner of this award, and a victory by Rodriguez or Smollett would be even more distinctive in that either of them would be the first actress in a quarter century to snag this award for a final season.

Prior to joining the ranks of other prolific TV moguls, David E. Kelley got his start by writing for NBC’s “L.A. Law” and then co-creating “Doogie Howser, M.D.” for ABC. While both shows were still running, Kelley’s first solo creation, “Picket Fences,” was picked up by CBS and premiered in the fall of 1992. Despite never being a ratings success, the series ran for four seasons and won the Emmy for Best Drama Series twice. It also nabbed at least two acting awards per year, amounting to a total of 10.
Three of the acting trophies went to leading lady Kathy Baker, who played small town doctor and mother of three Jill Brock. Her third victory came for the final season episode “Bottled,” in which her character’s mid-life crisis comes to a head during her youngest son’s 13th birthday party. This year’s National Memorial Day Concert, the annual tribute to members of the military and their families, will once again be a pre-taped event with performances and tributes from around Washington and other parts of the country, but that doesn’t mean that it’s any less moving.
The Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on the Capitol grounds prevent the traditional large-scale live concert, but producers have planned a lineup that includes Gladys Knight, Vince Gill, Sara Bareilles, Alan Jackson, Denyce Graves, The Four Tops and Brian d’Arcy James, along with Kathy Baker and Joe Morton.
Among the highlights will be a commemoration of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, in which Steve Buscemi hosts a segment against a backdrop of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York. “A morning that began so sunny and bright was the beginning of America’s darkest hours, images that can never be erased from memory,...

The National Memorial Day Concert will again forgo the live setting on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in favor of a series of taped performances, with plans for the event to commemorate 9/11 and Gold Star families, along with other tributes.
The May 30 event, honoring active military, veterans and their families, has traditionally gone live with the Capitol and National Mall as a backdrop, but the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has scuttled plans for a large-scale concert gathering.
Instead, producer Capital Concerts is shooting performances at key D.C. locations and elsewhere – sans Zoom segments. The lineup includes Colin Powell, Gladys Knight, Vince Gill, Sara Bareilles, Alan Jackson, Denyce Graves, The Four Tops, Brian d’Arcy James and the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jack Everly. There also will be a Salute to Services with the Joint Chiefs of Staff from the Pentagon, and a special message from General Mark A. Milley,...

“Frasier.” “Friends.” “ER.” “The X-Files.” It’s amazing how just the mention of a TV show can take you back in time, and with this list it’s no surprise that we’re offering our flashback 25 years to 1995, remembering the 47th Emmy Awards. It was a night with no one big winner among several now-classic series, a new Egot recipient, some sentimental moments and a memorable homage to TV theme songs. Jason Alexander of “Seinfeld” and Cybill Shepherd of “Cybill” led the festivities on September 10.
Perennial favorite “Frasier” held on to its title of Best Comedy Series for the second year, a streak it would continue until 1999, winning for each of its first five seasons. It beat out popular sitcoms “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Mad About You,” “Seinfeld” and newcomer “Friends.” Kelsey Grammer won his second of four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for playing the title character, while his onscreen brother,...

TruTV has opted not to go ahead with the previously greenlighted season of scripted comedy I’m Sorry, created by and starring Andrea Savage. The well-received series had been renewed for a 10-episode third season to air in 2020.
“Due to circumstances created by Covid, we unfortunately cannot move forward with production on the third season of I’m Sorry,” the network said in a statement to Deadline. “We admire Andrea Savage’s irreverent voice and fresh take on parenthood and are so proud of the show she and her cast and crew created. She was a great partner for many years and we truly wish everyone well.”

Hulu is moving ahead with Dopesick, an 8-episode limited series focused on America’s opioid crisis, brandishing promising marquee names in headliner Michael Keaton, Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson, Emmy-winning writer/showrunner Danny Strong and veteran Emmy-winning producer Warren Littlefield.
The series, a production of Fox 21 Television Studios eyed for 2021, adapts author Beth Macy’s 2018 journalistic book, Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America. Hulu’s series, like the book, will focus on the ordeal of a Virginia mining town, with Keaton starring as Samuel Finnix, who’s described as “an old-school doctor who approaches his practice with kindness and compassion, but finds himself embroiled in Big Pharma’s deadly secret.” Yet, the series will also intersect “unsparing yet deeply human portraits” of families affected by the pill-pushing encroachment of monolithic companies, all while attempting to shine “a hopeful light” for the future. Genre movies based in the home usually take one of a few routes. They can be a haunted house tale, they can be a home invasion movie or they can be something else. Anyone Home? sits nicely in that ‘something else’ category.
It centres on a single mum, Camila (Monique Gabriela Curnen), who is struggling financially and mentally while bringing up her son. She thinks her luck has changed though when she gets a job house-sitting a model home. All she has to do is decorate the house to look good for when would be buyers look round. But it doesn’t take too long for even that to be too much for her.

The Gaffney Chicago Medical Center’s team is going to be adding one more name to the long list of people who need their help, as “Picket Fences” alum Kathy Baker has been set as a guest star on the Season 5 premiere of “Chicago Med,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.
The Emmy winner will play Nancy Geddes, who is described as a “devoted grandmother to A+ student and joy of her life, Cameron, who also happens to be battling emotional issues.” Nancy has “bent over backwards to provide for him and raise him right, but the impact of Cameron’s condition threatens to upend the life she envisions for him.”
“Chicago Med” stars Nick Gehlfuss, Torrey DeVitto, Oliver Platt, Brian Tee, Yaya DaCosta, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Marlyne Barrett. Actors Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling are both exiting as series regulars this season.

The Art Of Racing In The Rain is the third film I’ve seen theatrically so far this year narrated by a dog. A Dog’S Journey and its cheesy-but-sweet knockoff A Dog’S Way Home showed that a dogs-eye view of the world can make for funny, refreshing and insightful cinema. The Art Of Racing In The Rain starts out well, but the story quickly turns sad, then morose, then unsavory, then unbearably dull, falling into one predictable cliché after another. Though it comes with a stronger pedigree than the other two films (it was based on an acclaimed novel by Garth Stein), it’s easily the worst of the three.
The Art Of Racing In The Rain begins with an old, dying golden retriever (voiced by Kevin Costner) reflecting on the highlights of his life and that of the beloved human who’d adopted him, amateur Formula One...

Author Garth Stein fired a literary agent who rejected his idea of creating an entire novel from the perspective of a dog. After said novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, spent 156 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list following its 2008 debut, Stein had the last laugh. Now the novel is a movie, with the same title and the same perspective. No doubt there will be cynical moviegoers who’ll side with Stein’s agent about talking-pooch stories. But those in thrall to all things canine will surely...

Dog lovers will flock to this one… Milo Ventimiglia & Amanda Seyfried and Director Simon Curtis are interviewed by DaniElle DeLaite for their movie ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ based on the book by Garth Stein. In the film, the voice of Enzo is voiced by Kevin Costner – which is pretty much the voice we all wish our dogs had. The film also stars Martin Donovan, Gary Cole, Kathy Baker, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Lily Dodsworth-Evans and Andres Joseph.
Amanda Seyfried talks about how the book changed her life, and how she loved coming to the set with the dog everyday. Ventimiglia talks about falling in love with the dogs and how he learned from the trainers on set about acting with the dogs. He became a bit of a dog-whisperer on set too, and he tells us how the trust between them comes to the big screen.

At some point, pretty much everyone who’s owned a dog has stared into the creature’s soulful brown eyes and wondered what it was thinking. Director Simon Curtis’ decade-in-the-making “The Art of Racing in the Rain” is a simple-minded yet skillfully manipulative answer to that question — featuring the bare-feet-in-loose-gravel voice of Kevin Costner as Enzo, the canine companion to Seattle-based race car driver Denny Swift (Milo Ventimiglia) — that’s not as peppy as “A Dog’s Purpose” nor as droll as “Isle of Dogs,” and nowhere near as inane as “Look Who’s Talking Now” but still effective on its own dog-forsaken terms.
This movie’s entire raison d’être is to make you cry, and in that respect, novelist Garth Stein piled on nearly every ploy — from Enzo’s death (it’s signaled right there in the opening scene) to a cancer diagnosis to a custody battle to...

Based on the tepid reception to “A Dog’s Journey” (the sequel to 2017 hit “A Dog’s Purpose”) earlier this summer, the trend of interior-voice canine flicks isn’t necessarily a case of unconditional love with moviegoers. But hopes are now being pinned on “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” the latest adaptation of a “first-person” animal story (this one a 2011 bestseller by Garth Stein), that dog-loving audiences — receptive to the notion that their four-legged companions contain hidden depths of English-language acquisition and philosophical awareness – will be ready once more to fill theaters when presented with family-friendly pet-centric fare.
Don’t let that “Art” in the title fool you, though: This sentimental slog about the relationship between a friendly golden retriever and the growing family of a race car driver is, under director Simon Curtis’ no-nonsense stewardship, about as box-checked and rubber-stamped as mainstream entertainment gets.

In The Art of Racing in the Rain, directed by Simon Curtis, Kevin Costner voices the internal monologue of Enzo, a beautiful canine and the hero of this story. Adapted by screenwriter Mark Bomback from the novel by Garth Stein, here we have the jerkiest of tearjerkers. It’s a film so determined to wring out emotion from the audience that it offers up a cancer storyline and a beloved-animal-reflecting-on-those-he-loves storyline.
Denny Swift (Milo Ventimiglia) is a handsome racecar driver who spontaneously buys a puppy, feeling called to do so. Not too long after, he falls in love with schoolteacher Eve (a lovely Amanda Seyfried). As the milestone moments of their life come fast and furious, Enzo takes us along for the ride, voraciously voicing his opinion of every character and plot twist to which we are introduced. As Enzo mentions, he considers himself more human than dog in many ways.

“The Art of Racing in the Rain” star Milo Ventimiglia is a big Disney lover, so Thursday night’s premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood was a dream come true for more reasons than one.
“I feel like finally Disney’s recognizing that I can work for them, seeing as how they wouldn’t hire me when I was 17 to clean the streets on Main Street,” Ventimiglia told Variety on the red carpet. “My mom worked at Disneyland at the Mad Hatter. My sister worked at the Candy Palace and I went to go get a job when I was 17 at Disneyland and it didn’t happen. They wouldn’t hire me.”
“So now…the years of wearing mouse ears and all that are finally paying off,” the star laughed, adding, “Disney picked up 20th Century Fox [which produces his Emmy-nominated series ‘This Is Us’] and they produced this, so I’m kind...
