Andy Partridge is having some particularly bad luck lately. He’s pretty sure he had the coronavirus a few months back — plus, due to a rainy winter, his studio door is busted. Now, he can’t record without bothering the neighbors, who are outside a bit more than usual in light of the pandemic — which has effectively stopped work on his new album My Failed Songwriting Career, a collection of rejected songs he wrote for other people.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott talks about running an independent film company in the UK, finding the right project and a post-Brexit industry.
Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.

He’s the man behind Hereford Films, the production and financing company he runs with partner Damien Morley. If that name rings a bell, it might well be because Morley owns a modelling agency that takes care of most of the Page 3 girls, and the entrepreneur has even recently launched a bid to buy the Page 3 brand off The Sun himself.

Departure Day: When it comes to TV, is closure important?
If you happen to follow a decent number of TV critics on Twitter, you may have noticed a minor eruption of late. A schism has emerged, prompted by accounts like The Cancellation Bear, which concerns itself solely with the topic of whether or not series are likely to survive based on current ratings patterns. That may sound perfectly innocent on its own, but quite a few admirers have expressed the notion that they refuse to dive into a series if they get the sense that it will come to a premature end, thereby robbing them of closure. This idea has, naturally, left many critics incensed: isn’t TV a medium founded on chaos, on the thrill of working within limitations and at the whims of fickle audiences? Moreover, isn’t it silly to always want tidy resolution in the context...

Anthologies are rather prevalent in the horror genre as of late, and by late, I mean in the past few years. Trick r’ Treat seemed to have ushered in an era of anthologies that tried to be similar to Creepshow in that they have all tried to create an image that is lasting. Though many disagree with me, I think Chillerama was competent for what it was trying to achieve. I don’t think it’s amazing or that it will be talked about years from now, but it was not a horrible addition to the sub-genre. Deadtime Stories was a miss but does anyone think that a film with Romero’s name attached with actually be good? So here we are with The Theatre Bizarre, a cheaply made anthology that combines the work of 7 directors (six stories, one connecting thread). Each director was given a set amount of money...

While I’ve seen more than a few indie horror anthologies of late—some good, others forgettable—the anthology film seems to be making a comeback. Six shorts linked by framing scenes make up The Theatre Bizarre, a film being distributed by Severin Films.

Erica Rhodes is an actress who caught my attention where else, on Facebook of course and there was that cool horror movie Plague Town that I listed in my “obscure horror movies” must see article back last Halloween! We cover everything I could think of for the first go-around, from her weird hobbies to, playing the cello, to all of her impressive acting gigs. Check out my latest Versus with my newest crush, actress Erica Rhodes.

Despite Donald Trump being the loudest and most public face of the "Birther" movement, David Axelrod, advisor for President Obama's re-election campaign, was quick to point out to David Gregory that it was actually the news media that forced Obama to release the long-form birth certificate and not Trump. Although Axelrod was happy to allow Trump a "little ego boost," sarcastically saying he needs that.

About five years ago if you asked any regular Today Show watcher who would take over as co-host if Matt Lauer ever left, the answer would have been an easy one: David Gregory. The natural and smooth (and tall!) Gregory had been the fill in for Lauer just about every time Lauer took any time off. He even boogied live at the 30 Rock plaza to show off his "lighter side." But these days an 8-11Am Today Show watcher who doesn't follow politics closely (Gregory appears to be on pretty regularly in the first half hour talking politics) might very well say David who?...

Two years into the Obama presidency, the issue of where he was born and what religion he follows somehow continues to be an issue for many on the far right, and now House Speaker John Boehner is coming under fire for telling NBC's David Gregory that it's "not my job" to dispel those rumors. His anger drove his ratings, but also drove his bosses crazy. Howard Kurtz on how the newly unemployed MSNBC star's indignation fueled his rise and fall.
When Keith Olbermann launched his MSNBC program eight years ago, he attempted to assemble a witty, fast-paced, post-ironic look at the day's news. Then he got angry.
Related story on The Daily Beast: Rush Limbaugh's TV Nemesis
As his indignation swelled-fueled by George W. Bush, the Republicans, the Iraq war and Fox News-his ratings ballooned as well. But at times the anger would metastasize into self-righteous fury, producing bitter confrontations with his network bosses-who treasured Olbermann's success but were increasingly worn out by the histrionics.
Olbermann's abrupt departure Friday demonstrated, in a very real sense, the limits of anger as a tool of television. The same fervor that draws cheers from partisan viewers almost invariably leads to clashes with the people who sign the checks,...

I've spent a lot of time telling you all about the different aspects of Severin Films' home video catalog and even their theatrical releases. You would think that would be all, perhaps they'd found their niche and they'd be glad to hang out in their comfort zone, but you'd be wrong. Having admirably tackled EuroSleaze, horror, the eternal works of D'amato, Borowczyk, and Franco, and dipped their toes into feature film distribution and production, you'd think they would be satisfied. However, Severin Films has so much more to offer, their future is bright, and I predict that at least a couple of their upcoming releases will blow the minds of home viewers in the coming years.

I am a fan of sleazy cinema. I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I can appreciate it for the art, but sometimes, there really is very little art to it and you just have to meet it on its own terms. Severin Films has taken a very active interest in the European sleaze cinema of the 1970's, and all fans of this genre are better off for it. They've taken the time not only to seek out disgusting little gems from the era, but also taken the effort to at least attempt to contextualize the work by creating extras that are worthy of the film and help the viewer better understand.
Severin's catalog has too many of these titles for me to go over each one individually, but I did manage to get a few tidbits out of Severin founder, David Gregory, regarding the procuring of both the films and the extras they include.

Fans of Richard Stanley rejoice. The iconic - but far from prolific - director of Dust Devil and Hardware is currently in production on Mother Of Toads, his entry in upcoming horror anthology project The Theatre Bizarre.
Co-produced by Severin Films and Metaluna productions, The Theatre Bizarre gathers a sextet of cult horror directors with Richard Stanley out of the gate first but soon to be followed by Douglas Buck, Karim Hussein, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory and Tom Savini. All six were handed identical budgets and the promise of total creative freedom provided they turn in a short between ten and twenty minutes long inspired by Grand Guignol.
Stanley's entry went before cameras last week and the first images will be appearing on Twitch shortly.

Rachel, your confidence brings you new and amazing opportunities this year!
Rachel Maddow, your brilliant ideas and superb communication skills brings promising new career opportunities. Astrology.com has all the details!
Happy birthday, Rachel Maddow! In typically trailblazing Aries fashion, you’ve risen to the top of your field as a political commentator who has proven that her openly gay sexual orientation isn’t a handicap in prime-time news broadcasting. Your Moon-Mercury conjunction foretells of someone who feels comfortable expressing their viewpoints and ideas, and your Mars-Jupiter in forward-thinking Aquarius tells of someone just as comfortable espousing brilliant, highly original viewpoints. Your passion comes down to your core beliefs, which may or may not fit into a tidy little box, and this makes you a compelling contributor on such popular news programs as Countdown with Keith Olbermann and Race for the House with David Gregory. 2010 is shaping up to be...

Two of British maverick director Derek Jarman's most accomplished films are interpretations of Jacobethan texts. One is his magical 1979 treatment of Shakespeare's The Tempest (in which the masque takes the form of Elisabeth Welch performing "Stormy Weather" with a chorus of camp matelots). The other, shot while Jarman was dying of Aids, is this sombre modern dress version of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II (in which Annie Lennox sings Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye" as the eponymous king parts from his lover, Piers Gaveston). Unfolding in flashback as Edward (Steven Waddington) awaits his execution, the film pares Marlowe's play to the bone and stages it on a claustrophobic set of unscalable walls and sand-covered floors. With dramatic lighting by Ian Wilson and striking costumes by Sandy Powell, subsequently a multiple Oscar and Bafta winner, the movie contains graphic, horribly painful violence, finds strong parallels...

The CNN host shuffle continues with Candy Crowley.
The veteran correspondent will anchor the network's Sunday morning political talk show, "State of the Union," beginning on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 9 a.m. Et, reports the AP.
Crowley, 61, will replace John King, who in turn is going to weekday evenings, the slot Lou Dobbs vacated in 2009.
Crowley has breached the boys' club since she's the only woman doing a Sunday morning political show, up against CBS' Bob Schieffer, NBC's David Gregory and Fox's Chris Wallace. Only ABC remains open ever since George Stephanopoulos left for "Good Morning America."
Crowley specializes in covering U.S. presidential, gubernatorial, and Senate elections. She's been with CNN since 1987.

Severin Films sent along the sad news that Italian genre director Rino Di Silvestro died of cancer on October 3. The news is especially bittersweet for the company, as it has been gearing up to give his 1984 shocker Hanna D.: The Girl From Vondel Park its DVDebut October 27. A new on-camera interview will be included on that disc, and we’ve got an exclusive clip from it below.
Best known for helming 1976’s Werewolf Woman (a.k.a. La Lupa Mannera, The Legend Of The Wolf Woman, etc.), Di Silvestro was also behind such sordid titles as Women In Cell Block 7, Red Light Girls and Deported Women Of The SS Special Section. Hanna D., on which he used his occasional pseudonym Axel Berger, was produced in the wake of the German hit Christiane F. and follows a Dutch schoolgirl on a descent into drugs and depravity. Severin’s disc will...

After many years of false starts (and announcements), Richard Stanley’s sci-fi/horror cult classic Hardware is finally set to make its U.S. DVD debut, and will appear on Blu-ray as well. Fango got the scoop that Severin Films will release the film on extras-packed discs this fall.
Hardware stars Stacey Travis as a woman living in a postapocalyptic future who is given some robot scraps by scavenger Dylan McDermott; the pieces soon reconfigure themselves into a murderous robot, with plenty of bloodshed ensuing. Trimmed to avoid an X rating by original distributor Miramax for its 1990 release, the movie will be presented in uncut, uncensored form, transferred from Stanley’s personal print. Extras will include:
• Audio commentary
• Deleted scenes
• Behind-the-scenes footage
• Stanley’s never-before-seen hour-long Super 8 version
And possibly more; retail price info and cover art are coming soon. “They say, ‘Once in every generation a plague shall fall upon you,...

Warning: If you love horror films (and you obviously do, since you’re visiting this site) and are over the age of 13, do not listen to the last section of the audio commentary on Dark Sky’s The She-beast DVD. What you’ll find is an attack on horror fans everywhere, with producer Paul Maslansky stating that all genre films are childish and the only people who like them are kids. Actually, to be fair, he states that they are not for “serious people,” but instead are for those who have no “critical faculties” and are “grown-up children”. Oh yeah, and apparently we fright fans have “lower standards” when it comes to cinema.
While this verbal bashing lasts only a few minutes toward the end of an otherwise fascinating commentary (although there are murmurs of this attitude throughout), it still leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth. Doesn’t...

Maddow with MSNBC Pres. Phil Griffin at the TCA press tour
Out political talk show host Rachel Maddow was on an MSNBC panel at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour last week, fielding questions about her show, what she's learned since it launched, and what this inauguration day means to her. AfterElton.com's Michael Jensen reported back to us, and we've excerpted some of the most interesting portions for you.
First, MSNBC President Phil Griffin responded to questions about the origin of The Rachel Maddow Show.
"We made a decision right prior to the conventions to take a little bit of a risk," said Griffin. "Rachel had been filling in for Olbermann that summer [which was] the first time she ever read a teleprompter ... Nobody had kept Keith's numbers when Keith took a day off, because that show is so uniquely Keith. But Rachel did. And after we saw that, it...

Fango heard from filmmaker/DVD producer David Gregory, who gave us the scoop on a new disc he’s working on for Severin Films. “We’ve picked up the rights to EXPOSÉ, a.k.a. House On Straw Hill, with Udo Kier and Linda Hayden,” he tells us.
The 1976 chiller, written and directed by James Kenelm Clarke, stars Fango fave Kier as a writer who retreats to a remote house in the British countryside to work on his new novel, accompanied by a secretary (Hayden) who turns out to have a dark side. “We will most likely release the DVD under the U.S. House title,” Gregory says, “though it’s better known to me and my UK-based Severin partner Carl Daft as EXPOSÉ, the title under which it was banned in England. We have a soft, nostalgic spot for any film that was tagged as a ‘Video Nasty’ in...

There's something special about saucy European sleaze horror in the 70's.
That unique blend of morally bankrupt, American potboiler pulp noir attitude combined with a distinct haute couture informed Euro-sexuality and sensationally stylized level of graphic, phantasmagorical violence just speaks to me. I worship Dario Argento, swoon over Sergio Martino, bite my lip at the name Leon Klimovsky, click my heels over Antonio Bido, pump my fists at the mere mention of Lucio Fulci…yes, I love these men and the maniacal works of misbehaving, lush, junk-shock cinema they once slung (and in some cases, continue to sling).
I've seen and own so many fantastic Italian, Spanish and French genre films from this period that I consider myself something of a connoisseur, a man who knows and loves his Eurotrash and can differentiate between a really good lurid treat, a middling one and one that couldn't cut the mustard in...

Katie Couric anchors the coverage on CBS, while Charles Gibson does the same on ABC, Jim Lehrer on PBS, Shepard Smith on Fox and Brian Williams on NBC. On the cable-news nets, Wolf Blitzer acts as ringmaster on CNN, while David Gregory moors MSNBC and Brit Hume mans Fox News. 90210 @ 8pm Annie...

New York -- For the first time since they formally accepted their parties' nominations and ahead of three scheduled debates, Gop presidential candidate John McCain and his Democrat rival Barack Obama appeared together at a forum on public service at Columbia University.
Unlike the debate series that kicks off Sept. 26 at the University of Mississippi, the two didn't spar directly. McCain first answered questions, mostly about community service, on stage from PBS's Judy Woodruff and Time Magazine editor Rick Stengel. After McCain was interviewed for about 45 minutes, Woodruff introduced Obama and he walked onto the stage. Obama and McCain embraced, and then McCain left the same way Obama arrived.
The ServiceNation Forum was televised, with commercial breaks, on Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, PBS and, at least in New York, by NY1. The commercials included T. Boone Pickens' spots about his energy plan as well as an Aarp advocacy commercial.

Network execs mollified the cantankerous Keith Olbermann as they demoted him by promising to sweeten his $4 million-a-year contract. But his more professional MSNBC co-anchor, Chris Matthews, didn't get anything but half the blame. David Gregory was given the job of anchoring MSNBC's political coverage, following a firestorm over the cable news outlet's liberal bias and on-air squabbling between its prima donna pundits. Olbermann told reporters he initiated the demotion. "So he threw Matthews under the bus," said one insider, who added, "This has [Ge chairman] Jeff Immelt's fingerprints all over it - if not his fists.

There's been a coup against the leftists occupying MSNBC's election anchor desk. Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann have been bumped by the Peacock Network, beginning with the upcoming presidential debates and continuing through election night, a spokeswoman said.
David Gregory will be the new political anchor, while Matthews and Olbermann will return to their nightly shows, "Hardball" and "Countdown," respectively.
The benching of the blowhards comes amid accusations that the pair has been shilling for the Democratic ticket.
