Ian McKellen plays the title role in Hamlet, and his stage performance is going to be beamed to cinemas.
Ian McKellen is no stranger to a Shakespeare soliloquy. Having played in every one of his plays many times over, from the towering titan King Lear to the Scottish Play and Richard III.
Now, he is bringing Hamlet, often cited as one of the all time great parts for an actor, to the big screen for one night only.
The synopsis reads as follows:
A tale of revenge that has stood the test of time, William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy is reimagined for the modern day as a gripping psychological thriller! Transcending the confines of the stage in a uniquely modern spin, the film utilises nearly every room of the Theatre Royal Windsor to transform it into the immortal Elsinore Castle, from basement dungeon to roof-top battlement. Ian McKellen, reprising his role as Hamlet,...

“The Hunger Games” star Sam Claflin has boarded George C. Siougas’ short film “The One Note Man” as an executive producer.
Narrated by Ian McKellen (“Lord of the Rings”), the Christmas-set story focuses on a bassoonist wedded to his routine, which involves playing a single note each day in the orchestra he is part of before returning home. One day, after accidentally overhearing a mind-blowing violin solo the musician finds himself caught between “staying in his comfort zone or stepping out and changing his life forever.”
The film, which has qualified for Oscar submission after winning the grand prize for best live action short at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, stars Jason Watkins (“The Crown”), Louisa Clein (“Emmerdale”), Crystal Yu (“Doctor Who”), Paul Barber (“The Full Monty”).
It does not feature any dialogue, instead giving audiences an opportunity to enjoy an original score by “Shakespeare in Love” composer Stephen Warbeck.

Too edgy for the mainstream, Martin Sherman’s influential play is nevertheless transformed into an admirable, well-crafted show. In Hitler’s Berlin of 1934, being gay means death, or a living death in a ‘protective custody’ camp. Clive Owen, Lothaire Bluteau and Brian Webber find themselves on the way to Dachau, a new Circle of Hell. Yet even in a forced labor camp, the human spirit prevails. The British-made picture features Ian McKellen, Mick Jagger, and several other notable stars in their salad days.

Film Movement has acquired North American rights to a quartet of awards titles — “Bent,” “Midaq Alley,” “All About Lily Chou-Chou” and “The Mad Adventures of ‘Rabbi’ Jacob,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The films will have limited theatrical releases, followed by digital and home entertainment releases in 2018 and early 2019 under the company’s three-year-old Classics label.
“We continue to expand our Classics imprint, and spend a great deal of time uncovering films that deserve to be reintroduced into North America” said Michael Rosenberg, president. “We’re thrilled to add these four films to our catalog, each of which stands the test of time, and delivers an original story, peerless filmmaking and memorable star turns.”
“Midaq Alley,” directed by Jorge Fons, won 49 international awards, including 11 Ariel Awards upon its release in 1995. The drama takes place in a rundown neighborhood in Mexico City where three people’s lives intertwine beginning one Sunday afternoon...

After years of the bald pate that has made him utterly recognizable from his days as Jean-Luc Picard through X-Men’s Professor X, Patrick Stewart is opting for silver-fox elegance alongside fellow Marvel universe-er Ian McKellen for a pair of stage classics. This shot, exclusively debuting on EW.com, is from Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, in which Stewart plays Hirst opposite McKellen’s Spooner, as a pair of men in a North West London house sizing each other up over a hot summer night. Performing in repertory with No Man’s Land will be Samuel Beckett’s legendary Waiting for Godot,...

Just in case you haven't seen the movie or read the book, there is now a stage adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany's. With all the cheer and excitement of a funeral procession, this pseudo-play unwilling drags itself through the motions, regretting its very existence, wailing the question Why? -- which would be difficult for any audience member to answer. There is a real cat in this production, one of its livelier points, and it even had the good sense to leap out of its leading lady's arms and make a premature dash for the wings. At least someone knows when to jump ship on this sinking excuse of a needless imitation.
Emilia Clarke is beautiful, energetic, eager, and way out of her league in the role of Holly Golightly.
Chattering away on one sustained plane, with little variation, her performance would have stood-out in a college production, but is amateurish at this level.

New York -- If the cat is a potent symbol in the story of "Breakfast at Tiffany's," so too is it one in the new play version that has landed on Broadway.
A real cat appears in Holly Golightly's arms in Act 1 and seems, to put it mildly, dismayed. (In the last preview, it scratched the star on its way offstage.) The feline then reappears toward the end of the play to thoroughly undermine a key dramatic scene by waddling away nonchalantly. The cat is also there when the curtain falls, looking appropriately sleepy.
The cat – all three animals playing the part ludicrously get their own Playbill entries – is just one of the problems in this ill-conceived and poorly executed adaptation of a classic American tale that opened Wednesday at the Cort Theatre.
The many scenes stubbornly refuse to add up to much and it remains as flat as Golightly is supposed to be effervescent.

Ready for an evening out, Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis were on hand for the opening night of “Breakfast at Tiffany's” on Broadway on Wednesday (March 20).
Bundled up against the chilly Big Apple night, the couple huddled close as they posed for the awaiting photographers before heading inside the Cort Theater for the show.
Based on the novel by Truman Capote, the play follows Holly Golightly, the woman every man wants to be with and every woman wants to be.
Directed by Sean Mathias, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” stars Emilia Clarke, Corey Michael Smith and George Wendt.

New York -- It might be time to call for a moratorium on stage adaptations of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Producer David Merrick famously pulled the plug in New York after only four previews on a 1966 musical version that starred Mary Tyler Moore, announcing that he was sparing the public an incredibly dull evening in the theater. Samuel Adamson wrote a dramatic adaptation headlined by Anna Friel that debuted in London in 2009 to mixed reviews. And now the same director, Sean Mathias, has taken a blundering stab at turning it into a Broadway play, this time with a
