Christopher Nolan’s deal with Universal for “Oppenheimer” included this: The studio, a leader in early release of films to home platforms, would need to make a very big exception.
At 122 days, “Oppenheimer” had the longest theatrical window of 2023. Compared to the year’s 84 other wide releases, it was more than triple the industry average of 37 days. Universal’s second-longest window belonged to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which was a bigger hit than Nolan’s film but lost theatrical exclusivity after 41 days.
Studios aren’t interested in specifics around theatrical windows — or, in offering PVOD data beyond top 10 lists that offer neither financial context nor independent verification. This is our attempt to provide a full-year view of theatrical windows, after prior surveys revealed a 30-day average for the first four months of 2023 and 40 days for early summer.

A venerable jump-scare of the fall film season, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is poised to become the biggest horror movie of the year. With a box office prediction of $50 million, director Emma Tammi’s animatronic house of horrors stands to outdo “The Exorcist: Believer” and “Saw X,” which earned $26.5 million and $18.3 million during their respective openings.
“I’m taking all of these predictions with a grain of salt, only because you never know,” Tammi told IndieWire in a phone interview.
“It’s amazing to be going into this weekend leading with all this excitement and those strong projections. But at the end of the day, I think my biggest nerves are wrapped around whether or not the fan base is going to embrace this film. And I’m staying focused on that. Everything else will be gravy if it comes — just keeping fingers crossed.”

If Chuck E Cheese gave you nightmares, you might want to just go ahead and cross Five Nights at Freddy’s off your must-see list. If not, then the new trailer showcasing the animatronic characters will probably make you move the film higher up on that same list.
Based on the popular video games created by Scott Cawthon, Five Nights at Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games franchise), Elizabeth Lail (You), Piper Rubio (Unstable), and Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost). Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot) and Matthew Lillard (Good Girls) also star in the creepy film adaptation.
Creator Cawthon wrote the screenplay along with Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddeback. Tammi directs and Cawthon and Jason Blum serve as producers. Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Christopher H. Warner executive produce.

Up next from Host and Dashcam director Rob Savage is The Boogeyman, based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story, which is now playing in theaters this weekend.
Savage spoke with Bloody Disgusting about making a studio film on the heels of two smaller-scale found footage horror features, while also discussing his lessons learned from those experiences, as well as his approach to designing a PG-13, boundary-testing creature.
“I’d never really thought of myself as being somebody who would direct found footage movies, and then I ended up doing two back-to-back,” Savage says of transitioning from Dashcam to The Boogeyman. “But it took a little bit of a jolt to get back into that mode of storytelling. I was amazed by how much I was able to take from working on Host and Dashcam and work into this movie. Both of those movies were totally improvised.”

One of the more effective scares teased in the trailer of The Boogeyman, the latest from director Rob Savage (Host, Dashcam), makes terrifying use of a glowing moon ball in the dark. This moment encapsulates the horror movie’s quintessential light versus dark, good versus evil battle.
Ahead of The Boogeyman’s release in theaters this Friday, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Savage about the fear of the dark and crafting scares from it, which led to a surprising revelation about the light source that Disney vetoed that would’ve created an accidental Star Wars connection.
Because light is so vital in The Boogeyman, Savage explained his approach during our chat. He told us, “I wanted it to be simple and classic. It really is a story about light and dark, and we boil everything down to a very simple mythology. I wanted it to feel like the story that everyone...

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title.
Stephen King’s short takes place in a psychiatrist’s office and sees Dr. Harper engaged with patient Lester Billings in a haunting session that unpacks the mysterious deaths of Lester’s three children. Feature film The Boogeyman uses the short story as the inciting event that brings the malevolent entity that plagued Billings’ home into Dr. Harper’s.
In the film, Chris Messina (Birds of Prey, Devil) assumes the role of Dr. Will Harper, a psychiatrist struggling to help his family through their collective grief, when Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) arrives at his home office for aid. This pivotal introductory scene establishes Will Harper, the lore, and its ties to King’s source material.

Like many Stephen King fans, I found the Master of Horror as a child. I grew up staring in awe at my dad’s paperbacks lining a high shelf and pondered the haunting images emblazoned on their spines: a hand covered with eyes and bandages (Night Shift); green claws poking through a sewer grate (It); a crow man fighting a man I assumed to be Luke Skywalker (The Stand). When I finally gathered the courage to read one, I chose Night Shift. At just 326 pages, it seemed more manageable than the 1,000 page epics I would later fall in love with. The table of contents included evocative but familiar titles like “Sometimes They Come Back” and “Children of the Corn” and most of the stories were short, clocking in around 10-20 pages. How scary could they be?
I would soon learn that King saves some of his darkest work for short story collections.

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host), is out in theaters this Friday, June 2, 2023. The adaptation of Stephen King’s short story stars Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets”) as Sadie Harper, a grieving teen at the center of the supernatural horror.
Sadie begins the story still reeling from her mother’s unexpected passing, compounded by her father’s emotional detachment and her younger sister’s extreme phobia of the dark. All provide fertile ground for terror when the Boogeyman permeates their home.
Ahead of The Boogeyman’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Sophie Thatcher about her first trip into the Stephen King Universe. Above all, it was the character that drew Thatcher to the role. She explains of Sadie, “For me, as an actor at this point in my career, I’m just trying to find roles that I think will be challenging and that are layered and have something to overcome.

The titular creature is grotesque and frightening, and the jump scares are plentiful in 20th Century Studios’ The Boogeyman. Based on a Stephen King short story, The Boogeyman stirs up unsettling memories of nights spent wondering if that shadow on the wall is about to spring to life. Is that creaking noise just the house settling, or is something ever so slowly creeping toward the bed in the cover of darkness?
Parents always deny the existence of closet monsters and claim that there’s nothing scary under the bed unless you consider dust bunnies sinister. However, the sisters in The Boogeyman are faced with a different reality – that bump in the night is a real threat that enjoys toying with its prey before finally killing them.

Rather than presenting a straightforward adaptation of King’s text, however, The Boogeyman uses its narrative as the film’s inciting event, acting as a spiritual sequel. While it never expands the mythology or story in any substantial way, this film adaptation is offset by Savage’s steadfast commitment to scares and a tremendous cast.

Disney, we know, has problems. There’s streaming, the contentious relationship with 2024 Republican presidential candidate/Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the fates of Hulu and Searchlight, layoffs — but as the dominant film distributor for the last decade, its film slate is known as a reliable source of strength. In 2023, that’s no longer a sure thing.
In the summer of 2019, Disney films represented 43 percent of the season’s $4.3 billion domestic take. Some box-office analysts have suggested that it’s possible that we could see a $4 billion summer — up $600 million from a resurgent 2022. However, May’s shortfalls make this is unlikely — and much of that falls to Disney.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” opened May 5; the live-action remake of “Mermaid” opened in previews today. Upcoming are “The Boogeyman” (June 9), “Elemental” (June 16), “Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny” (June 30), and “Haunted Mansion” (July 28). It’s a slate as mainstream as a studio can muster.

Within the first four minutes of Disney+ Original film “Crater,” we already have a cavalcade of movie tropes to contend with: dead parents, spaceships, and a 72-hour ticking clock for one newly-orphaned tween to say farewell to his friend group. At least we know Disney hasn’t shied away from its classic storylines.
Part “Guardians of the Galaxy” and part “Goonies” with a dash of “Outer Banks,” “Crater” centers on Caleb Channing (a well-cast Isaiah Russell-Bailey), who was raised on a lunar mining colony by his single dad (Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi). After the death of his father, Caleb becomes a ward of the state, poised to reap the “death benefits” from his father’s work contract with the colony. As part of said benefits, Caleb is supposed to be put in a cryosleep and transported to distant planet Omega, which takes 75 years to reach.

Nikole Hannah-Jones has given hundreds — or perhaps thousands — of interviews since she first published “The 1619 Project” in The New York Times Magazine in 2019. But when speaking to Variety ahead of the launch of the project’s six-part Hulu docuseries adaptation, the journalist says she’s feeling anxious. “This is a time of great anticipation and nerves,” Hannah-Jones says. “We really put our heart into this documentary, but it’s a different medium for me, and I felt a bit out of my element.”
She continues: “I know how to write a great magazine piece. I had to really depend on my collaborators — who were wonderful — to try to produce a great documentary, so we will see what the people say.”
So much of the production of “The 1619 Project” was new for the journalist — and cultural lightning rod — turned executive producer. One of the biggest hurdles was learning to conduct her interviews on camera.

As Summer begins its transformation into Fall, the studios are still offering virtual getaways at the local multiplex. This newest “travel tale’ also combines the popular theme of the “fish out of water” with a protagonist in very unfamiliar surroundings. Now, the movie marketing folks are hitting this aspect hard in the trailers and TV spots, making it appear to be an edgy modern spin on the cult fave TV sitcom “Green Acres” where a “city feller'” was flummoxed by the simple “country folk” (who often got the better of him). Oh but don’t be misled. There’s a lot more going on in this film since it comes from one of the busiest creative minds in the media today.

The Oscar buzz surrounding “Green Book” has been a revelation for Peter Farrelly, directing solo without brother Bobby this time around.
“I have a very thick skin, but I didn’t realize we were so looked-down-on,” Farrelly says with a laugh. “I thought we were highly regarded.”
Critics have marveled that the director, who created a crass-comedy oeuvre with Bobby, was at the helm of this awards-track film. He has a theory about the warm reaction to “Green Book,” audience award winner at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival: “It’s because this movie is not just a bunch of laughs,” Farrelly says. “It’s got heart, a feeling that gets to people.”
If an Oscar-tipped film such as “Green Book” seems like it’s a big step outside Farrelly’s comfort zone, think again. Farrelly’s work has often examined the clash of extreme cultural differences, whether Siamese twins who...

The trailer for "Get Hard," a new comedy starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, has finally arrived.
The film focuses on James (Ferrell), a hedge fund manager who's convicted of fraud and set for a prison sentence. With only 30 days before his stint behind bars begins, James wants to learn how to "get hard," and enlists Darnell (Hart) for help. Unfortunately, Darnell is a small business owner who knows nothing about life in prison.
If that set-up sounds ripe for disaster, the comic talents of Ferrell and Hart should save "Get Hard" from being too insensitive; it seems more silly than anything else. According to the flick's official synopsis, James and Darnell work together to "do whatever it takes for James to 'get hard' and, in the process, discover how wrong they were about a lot of things - including each other."
We'll see just how successful that mission is.

Here’s your first look at the poster and photos from Get Hard. The film is scheduled to open nationwide on Friday, March 27, 2015.
When millionaire hedge fund manager James (Will Ferrell) is nailed for fraud and bound for a stretch in San Quentin, the judge gives him 30 days to get his affairs in order. Desperate, he turns to Darnell (Kevin Hart) to prep him for a life behind bars. But despite James’ one-percenter assumptions, Darnell is a hard-working small business owner who has never received a parking ticket, let alone been to prison.
Together, the two men do whatever it takes for James to “get hard” and, in the process, discover how wrong they were about a lot of things – including each other.
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart join forces in the feature comedy Get Hard, also starring Tip “T.I.” Harris, Alison Brie, and Craig T. Nelson.

Chicago – While you wouldn’t normally compare the new action/comedy “2 Guns” with the comedy “I Love You, Man,” really the only difference between what Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington are doing now versus what Paul Rudd and Jason Segel did in 2009 is that “2 Guns” uses crime as the means by which two grown men fall in love with one another.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Based on the Boom! Studios graphic novels by Steven Grant, “2 Guns” is an unexpected bromance with just enough action to give its original subject matter justice and the surprising discovery of comedy to make it an overall worthy film to see. Mark Wahlberg doesn’t only co-star in this film; he steals the show. Refreshingly, he does not just his gun but even more so with his mouth.

Chicago – Will Ferrell makes several new proclamations loud and clear: he’s a comic dream-team duo with Zach Galifianakis in “The Campaign,” punching a baby and then a dog are seriously funny and real-life politics should take a lesson from this over-the-top smear campaign. Also, you need one supporting Korean weapon and there’s nearly no such thing as a 100% comedy that delivers on 100% of its comedy.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Starting and ending with what works best in this “R”-rated comedy, this and any “The Campaign” review can boil down to this: This film would have flopped without marrying Ferrell with Galifianakis and won’t simply because it did.
If you see this for no other reason than to witness this duo, these jokesmiths are as natural together as Boca burgers for a vegetarian. Seasoned comedy director Jay Roach (“Austin Powers,” “Meet the Parents”) wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, and Dylan McDermott star in this new trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ comedy The Campaign. May the best loser win! In theaters August 10.
When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other,...

Chicago – Kate Hudson portrays a dying woman in “A Little Bit of Heaven,” and the film is so annoying that her extinguishment can’t come fast enough. The film insults both living and dying, and virtually everything in between, and brings along Lucy Punch, Kathy Bates, Gael Garciá Bernal, Peter Dinklage and Whoopi Goldberg for the funeral.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
Hudson plays an almost sociopathic character, who is suppose to become sympathetic just because she is diagnosed with colon cancer. Yes, that is the serious premise, but as filtered through the Hudson character it is merely a prop designed to make everyone else in the film love her. There are no redeeming qualities to her crass talking, self destructive nature in the story – ignored by those around her – but it is cancer that is suppose to make such a character noble. It’s impossible to imagine the inner turmoil of a real cancer struggle,...

The Lucky One movie: Zac Efron The Zac Efron movie The Lucky One, in which Efron romances Atlas Shrugged: Part 1’s Taylor Schilling, earned $3.91 million in North America on Friday according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by Shine’s Scott Hicks, The Lucky One was down 57% compared to the previous Friday. Despite its relatively steep drop, The Lucky One is expected to stabilize over the weekend and gross $12m by Sunday evening. If so, The Lucky One will reach a $40.6 million cume, or about 30% more than the $31.1m Zac Efron’s Charlie St. Cloud brought in during its entire run in summer 2010. Although there’s no chance that The Lucky One will go as far as previous Zac Efron movies High School Musical 3: Senior Year ($90.55m) and Hairspray ($118.87m), there’s a good chance Efron’s latest will surpass the box-office take of the all-star...

Taylor Schilling, Zac Efron, The Lucky One movie Think Like A Man Breaks Record At no. 2 this weekend, the Zac Efron romantic movie The Lucky One collected $22.51 million at 3,115 sites, averaging a good $7,137 per-location according to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Following a solid opening on Friday, The Lucky One was expected to gross somewhere between $22-25 million by Sunday evening. It failed to reach the higher mark because, unlike the weekend’s other top-twelve movies, it was down on Saturday (-6%). Best known as the leading lady in the nearly universally panned film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s libertarian novel Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, Taylor Schilling plays Zac Efron’s love interest in this nearly universally panned adaptation of Nicholas Sparks‘ tearjerking novel — The Lucky One has a dismal 16% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes‘ top critics. Now, even though this may sound bad for Schilling, it’s anything but.

Chicago – One way to craft an unforgettable, undeniably adept film is to make a new one. Hollywood views that as financially risky, though, and it often doesn’t happen without being based on a book with a built-in audience or a film that’s already an international box-office success.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Just like the Swedish smash hit “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” was recently remade for U.S. audiences by David Fincher of “The Social Network” fame, producer and star Mark Wahlberg found financial worth – and he’d sell you on artistic, too – in the international remake route. He’s hoping he’d earn U.S. assurance from what recently worked in Iceland.
While U.S. audiences were well aware of Fincher’s hijacking from Sweden, “Contraband” being a U.S. remake of Iceland’s “Reykjavík-Rotterdam” is lesser known. That film most Americans can’t pronounce is one of the...

Coming to you on October 14th is a film that, I predict, is going to surprise a lot of people. Father of Invention, Directed by Trent Cooper (don't let Larry the Cable Guy fool you), and starring Kevin Spacey, Heather Graham, Camilla Belle, Johnny Knoxville, Craig Robinson and Virginia Madsen, is the kind of film that may well prove just crazy enough to work.
Given rather different circumstances, this might be one to write off (which is why it may look that way at first glance), but I have a lot of faith in Kevin Spacey and Heather Graham, and their ability to give this one just the right tone and comedic presence.
Take a look below, and don't let this one slip by.
Millionaire infomercial guru, Robert Axle (Kevin Spacey) loses everything when one of his inventions has a design flaw that accidentally chops off the fingers of thousands of customers.

While Jim Carrey's long-delayed I Love You Phillip Morris was pushed again from an April release date to late July, the actor has maintained his public profile via Twitter. Posting as many as 25 tweets in a day, Carrey is as manic ("I'm wearing my ninja turtle underwear right now...") and reflective ("In a world where 'sane' often means 'inauthentic', I'd prefer to be called madman!") as you'd hope or expect. The uncertainty behind Phillip Morris has provided an opportunity for Carrey to ponder his current place in the universe, but the actor isn't the only person to address it.
