Take for instance, University of Arizona Professor Noam Chomsky, one of the most influential public intellectuals in the world, speaking with Regents’ Professor Toni Massaro about social justice and the environment. The sweeping plains of North Dakota are naturally cinematic, its tall windswept grasses and blue river bends forming an image as American as apple pie. During the months-long protests at the Standing Rock reservation over the Dakota Access Pipeline’s demolishing of sacred Native burial grounds, this grand landscape became a bittersweet backdrop for images of peaceful protesters barraged by water cannons and choked by tear gas. Until now, these images reached the outside world only as shaky iPhone video, a drone shot, or a colorful still overlaid with inspirational text.

John Kiriakou is not well known to every American, but he should be. I regret that I had only a vague idea of who he was until I saw James Spione's extraordinary documentary Silenced, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2014 -- at which point Kiriakou was in jail. He was released last month, having served almost two years in a Federal prison. After seeing the film, I'll never forget him or his story.
Silenced examines the tremendous difficulties -- personal, professional, financial, legal -- faced by three government whistleblowers in the post-9/11 era: Kiriakou, an ex-cia analyst and counterterrorism officer; Thomas Drake, a former Nsa executive; and Jesselyn Radack, an attorney and former ethics adviser to the United States Department of Justice. They are treated as criminals and, in Kiriakou's case, jailed as one. But what if their "wrongs" are based in a defense of the Constitution?...

"Citizenfour" might be the hottest doc of the fall, and deservedly so, but Edward Snowden isn't the only government whistleblower in town. "Silenced," from Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker James Spione, chronicles the stories of three whistleblowers of the post 9/11 era — Thomas Drake, John Kiriakou, and Jesselyn Radack — who faced incredible trials and persecution in response to their standing up for what is both right and constitutional. The film has screened at Tribeca, Hot Docs, AFI Docs and many other film festivals, and today we've got the exclusive trailer for you to check out. The documentary promises a compelling and riveting tale about the troubling innermost, top-secret workings of the U.S. government, shedding light on the experiences of these whistleblowers — whose stories are not as well-known to the general public — who found their lives put under scrutiny as they tried to expose wrongdoing at the highest levels of the...

Despite currently serving a thirty-month prison sentence, John Kiriakou’s presence was deeply felt this weekend during Tribeca Film Festival's screening of "Silenced," a documentary by Oscar-nominated filmmaker James Spione. The film follows Kiriakou’s account of learning of and exposing the CIA’s use of torture as well as his subsequent trial and guilty verdict for disclosing classified files to a reporter. His wife was present at the post-screening panel to read, on his behalf, a statement in which he maintains his unstirred devotion to his country and its democratic ideals. In addition to providing the significant details on his case as well as those of fellow whistleblower Thomas Drake and their legal advisor Jesselyn Radack, the film gives a personal context to the process and aftermath of whistleblowing. It felt fitting, then, to have Kiriakou’s wife become emotional at the letter’s mention of their son’s...

Nowadays, telling the truth can be dangerous. In his new documentary, Silenced, filmmaker James Spione explores the 'war of whistleblowers' by telling the stories of as four high-profile truthtellers - Jesselyn Radack, Thomas Drake, John Kiriakou, and Peter Van Buren - who dared to question the nation's post-9/11 national security policy and uffered harsh consequences as a result. Spione, whose Incident in New Baghdad won Best Documentary Short at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival and went on to secure an Oscar nomination, needs your help. With the aid of fellow advocate Susan Sarandon (whom he met while they were fellow Shorts jurists at Tff 2012), Spione is making his case for support through a dramatic video that explains the issues at hand, the struggles of whistleblowers everywhere, and how you can help Silenced get the necessary funding to complete post-production through this Kickstarter campaign.

Got a bright idea for a film, a comic or even a hi-tech watch? For many, Kickstarter could be the answer – and now it's launched in Britain
Time was, in the olden days, that in order to create a video game, or fund a film or album, or make a comic, you needed a generous and deep-pocketed patron, or a corporation behind you which thought there was something – profit, in other words – in it for them. There might have even been a grant from an arts body somewhere. Remember them?
Crowdfunding, where large numbers of people donate small sums of money to a project, has changed that. Kickstarter is not the first online funding site for creative projects – ArtistShare was launched in 2003 to enable musicians to bypass record labels, and was followed by other sites such as IndieGogo – but it has gained the most traction and attention.

War Witch, a Canadian-made film about a young girl who escapes from the African rebels who forced her to be a child soldier, was named Best Narrative Feature at the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival. “This indelible character study of a girl who becomes a woman before our eyes in the midst of harrowing war gives words to the unspeakable,” said the jury, which included Patricia Clarkson, Dakota Fanning, Mike Newell, EW’s Lisa Schwarzbaum, Jim Sheridan, and Irwin Winkler. “Riveting, heartbreaking, vivid, and eloquent, the movie balances scenes of crazy enemy hatred with moments of luminous private love.”

The Tribeca Film Festival awards ceremony took place on Thursday, and the controversial Cuban film "Una Noche" turned out to be the toast of the town. Though "War Witch" won the award for Best Narrative Feature and Rachel Mwanza was named Best Actress, "Una Noche" became the breakout story of the festival after two of its actors disappeared en route to New York.
Director Lucy Mulloy, cinematographers Trevor Forrest and Shlomo Godder were honored for their work on the film. Actors Dariel Arrechada and Jaiver Nunez Florian both won Best Actor in a Narrative Feature.
Other big winners include Nisha Pahuja's "The World Before Her" for Best Documentary Feature, Bryan Buckley's "Asad" for Best Narrative Short and Frederic Golding's "On the Mat" for Best Feature Film in the festival's online competition.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.
Here's the full list of nominees with the winners in bold.

Carol Grayson, whose campaign over contaminated blood for haemophiliacs led her to link up with a Wikleaks expose documentary, calls her victorious Hollywood rival 'inspirational'
So in the end, we didn't quite make it a northern Oscar night. Our champion Carol Grayson was in the five-strong short-list for Best Short Documentary but she and her colleagues were pipped to the post.
You can read here about her work as executive producer of Incident in New Baghdad, an extraordinary sequence of events which followed her inspirational role campaigning to uncover the truth about tainted blood supplied to haemophiliacs in the 1970s and Eighties.
She had planned to watch the Hollywood glitzfest but then realised that she didn't have the right TV hookup; so she settled for the news-banners streamed across the screen on free channels, bobbing in and out from working on her latest project. She'd laid in pizza and her...

Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.

Well the hoopla is over for another year as Hollywood relishes in its self congratulatory extravagance with a ceremony that celebrates all that is “good” about the industry (and a ceremony that seems to ignore Everything joe public thinks is good). As predicted The Artist walked away with the most awards whilst – thank god – The Muppets picked up the best original song award. It’s also nice to see Christopher Plummer pick up his First Academy Award for his role in Beginners – definitely long-overdue methinks.

Just three days after Bradley Manning was arraigned for his role in allegedly spreading classified documents in the massive Wikileaks episode, a documentary film based on one of the most dramatic of those leaks is being feted Sunday at the Academy Awards.
"Incident in New Baghdad?" is based on an event captured in a dramatic 17-minute black-and-white raw feed from a U.S. Army helicopter that was the first high-profile release by Wikileaks. It has been nominated for Best Documentary, Short Subject.
The video allegedly leaked by Manning captured the sights and sounds of an Apache helicopter crew as it came across a group of people milling about in Baghdad, and then opened fire, killing most of them. The victims later turned out to be innocent civilians and reporters, carrying cameras rather than grenade launchers.
To make the film, director James Spione interviewed Spc. Ethan McCord, who was at the scene during the original 2007 incident,...

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

We've written, by vague estimates, something close to 80,000 words on the Academy Awards in the last six months. That's novel-length. And in two days time, it'll all be done, with the ceremony finally taking place at the no-longer-Kodak Theater at around 5pm Pst.
As such, we're not going to bother you too much with small talk: below, you'll find my final predictions for who's going to win on Sunday night. Tomorrow, the Playlist's boss man will weigh in with his own picks. And on Sunday, we'll be live-blogging the ceremony and winners, before final analysis comes in on Monday morning. Unlike the other two short categories, the nominees for Best Documentary Short had to viewed at one of the offical academy screenings as "God is the Bigger Elvis" is not included in the Shorts International program running in theaters nationwide due to licensing issues. That film profiles one-time ingenue Dolores Hart who left Hollywood in 1963 to become a Benedictine nun. Director Rebecca Cammisa contended for Best Documentary Feature in 2009 for "Which Way Home." On Wednesday of Oscar Week, the third annual “Docs!” night spotlighted the work of the nominated filmmakers in the Documentary Short Subject and Documentary Feature categories. The program included film clips from all of the nominated documentaries in both categories, followed a panel discussion with each group of nominees. On hand was program host Michael Moore - Oscar-winning director and Documentary Branch governor.
In his intro to the various clips, Moore remarked that nothing compares to watching a film with other fellow Americans in a theater and something that should be experienced together collectively. According to the director, “the public has turned to the documentary genre recently to learn the truth.” I was pleased with his enthusiastic acknowlegement of the Documentary Women filmmakers. “There are more women in the documentary branch than any other branches.”

Tragedy turned Carol Grayson into a campaigner for the truth, on the NHS tainted blood scandal and the Iraq war
